    Military rucksacks are optimized for heavy loads. Everything that makes civilian packs more comfortable and convenient--lighter weight, internal organizers, minimalist frames that 'mold to your body'--this actually makes them really bad at hauling lots of weight. Lightweight fabrics will tear and fray, little pouches will be ripped to shreds, and that flexible, ergonomic frame will sag and bend until you wish it wasn't there at all. With all of today's lightweight hiking and outdoor gear, not many people will be loading their packs heavy enough to actually reap the benefits of these surplus packs. That's the real reason why lots of people say military gear is garbage. You know how a pickup truck is really good at hauling things, but not very good at carrying people and light-duty domestic tasks like grocery shopping? Same principle at work.

    This isn't a serious comparison! The Silky is superior to the bahco....no contest. What would be a great comparison is a Corona and a silky! A folding saw superior to the bahco in performance and price. It will prove to be comparable to the Silky and even superior!

    i've tried pine resin, although that wouldn't light very well. also, should bark generally be process into strips and then crushed or rolled between the hands? and are you using the pump technique? pressure has to be uniform throughout, yes?

    • @rowanadventures
      @rowanadventures ปีที่แล้ว

      My preference is birch bark dust that I make by scraping a piece of BB into a small pile. Takes a spark very well. I have not tried the pump method.

    • @rowanadventures
      @rowanadventures ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JonathanBell-xl4dl The biggest issue with cattail is it burns faster than oxygen can get to it, do you have to keep moving or fluffing it if you want it to keep burning. It's not very practical on it's own. Try mixing it with something else like birch dust that you make by scraping birch bark with a knife.

    8:38 No "backlock" - What is this colossal obsession with this closed locking function? If one puts a folded Silky into a backpack with the blade tip first, how could that be a problem when extracting it? One grips the saw thus preventing it opening accidentally! What's the problem? Alternatively, one carries it in the sturdy case it comes with. On the other hand , using the Bahco means that opening the saw is always a two-handed operation. With a little practice, one can easily use the Silky with one hand only, holding the branch with the other hand. 8:40 Re the case - ".. adds considerable weight ..." Seriously dude? 8:17 Quite a bit heavier than the Bahco. Didn't you actually mean "sturdier"? 11:16 Sustainable. One doesn't sharpen these saws. A Silky, used correctly, will last you for decades! The professional arborist here where I live showed me his Silky that he's used almost daily for 15 years, with the same blade, and he says he sees no need to replace it yet. ( however, he uses it mostly on wet wood for pruning.) If one is adamant about cheap, there are numerous other brands out there that will go for a third of the price. Performance, however, is probably in line with the price. 14:47 the Bahco took at least twice as long, and you seemed to need much more effort in making the cut. You even repositioned your stance to do this. 15:24 Bahco claim that the Laplander blade is constructed to cut equally on both push and pull strokes. The Silky cuts ONLY on the pull stroke, while the push stroke is there to clear the kerf of sawdust material. One other advantage is that Silky is available in a wide range of sizes and teeth configurations. With the Bahco its more a case of what you see is what you get. 18:03 At the end of the day neither saw is actually expensive - $34 for a high precision tool that will last you a very long time is a good investment. The $14 difference will surely not break the bank! One thing you did not touch on is the technique required when using a Silky. The lift-on-the-push then pull-down-on-the-pull stroke is not a natural action, and needs some practice to do well. The Laplander has an enormous and loyal following among people who love them. Strength to them. The Silky does enjoy a growing popularity among people who enjoy the sheer pleasure of using them, so I guess there is a place for them both. Personally, I wouldn't hesitate to buy a Silky!

    Out of a Molle II Large Ruck, A Rfilemans Molle II Ruck and the ILBE Ruck Gen II I prefer the Molle II Medium Rucksack, lol. I own and use all 4. Most of the time I take a medium ALICE set up with Molle II straps and belt on a 1606MC frame with a sleep carrier. If I am going oit for a week I like the ILBE with the assault pack, and waist pack stacked. Be nice to have the sustainment pouches in Marpat but good luck. I also like the seal line drybag 65L that is issued with it. The thing is indestructible. The bottom section was for the ECWCS Modular Sleep System. The corps quit using the ILBE because it was incompatible with their body armor. The new armor was rounded and the pack shifted weight to much.

    The only reason these packs wound up on the civilian market so early was the Body armor mfg. and the pack mfg. were on two different pages. Marines made adaptors that worked out great, submitted them to Propper. Democrats controlled the purse and ordered the runner up system to refill their bank accounts and satisfy the bureaucrat's grabbing at their ankles. The Corps lost a great piece of equipment and the civilian public found yet a n other piece of Marine Corps Legend to hang on their walls. Light weight gear can turn it into a great BOB/Weekend hiking/camping pack. 10 C's fit great inside the lid, add a change of clothes in a water proof 9L bag. Light weight sleep system oor ranger roll maybe a light weight tent or tarp system and your good 40lbs carries great for us old timers who will never March to War again. NOT Water Proof; but it is made water resistant, light coat of scothc guard will diminish water weight worries. Your lid is sliding back because its fairly empty; if you notice the straps under the lid, you strap your poncho or hydration bladder and there ends the slippage issue. I find many rants on the pack should be rants on the user, your body weight will contribute to any "PACK FAILURES" an exercise program is necessary especially when we get older. Body Strength is key in any and all survival situations.

    Consider a honing rod. I was a butcher for a long time and a honing steel will extend your sharpening intervals enormously. I sharpened for 20 years on a Norton tri stone with 100, 200 and 400 grit stones. I mostly just used 100 grit and stropped with news paper laying on top of the stone. Before I learned why we strop I noticed the more I used my honing steel after sharpening, the sharper it got...then I learned why. The steel removed the burr. And that toothy 100 grit edge would cut ribeyes in one push pull stroke. Also, in the field you can roll down your window and hone on the edge of the glass....it will straighten your edge out. What most consider a dull knife that needs a touch up really just had an edge that's leaning over from use.

      @@rowanadventures I always used Forschner-Victorinox because they were provided. Full sized 10" with grooved steel and no abrasives. The grooved steel will concentrate all force on that tiny spot on the edge making contact so light pressure equals pounds of force, be gentle. I prefer the grooved honing steel over the smooth. At first I thought the smooth would be better for a mirror edge phase I went through with my edges. It was just meh....sure it whittled hairs but I went right back to my toothy 100-300 ANSI/JIS oil/water stone edges and a butcher steel. Basically one stone, newspaper strop and a steel for maintenance during use....just take the steel in the field. If you find yourself needing to use the steel every few mins then it's time to remove a bit of metal for a new edge. I typically got 2-4 weeks of 4-8 hour/day 5 days a week before I felt the a new edge was needed. Even then my set was the sharpest in the shop. Hope this helps and sorry for the late reply.

It did not seem to comfortable for me no matter how I adjusted it. I bought a larger padded belt over the standard size and still had problems.. I have a military background and I have been backpacking many times with other packs with no problems. Still, I will try it again sometime but presently to go more than a couple of miles with this thing is not comfortable. My normal pack is a Osprey Aether 85 AG and that is very comfortable.

    Hello Black Squirrel Bushcraft I have the Bahco Laplander and the Silky comboy 210 both are the same size saws. The only big difference between them is, The Bahco cuts on the forward and backwards stroke pulls where the Silky only cuts only the backwards stroke. I like them both But I trust the Bahco more on my camping outings because of the overall build weight and locking of the blade which is slightly thicker, speed doesn't matter for my only personal use and cost requirements. The silky saws are the gardener's choice of saws because of the speed and the blade being able to adjust to another cutting angle. Thank you for sharing your video for us good job.

      Thanks for watching and your very insightful comments.As it turns out, I too have been keeping my Bahco with me for the same reasons. Thank you for all the good points.

    Great video! Thank you for the instructions. Another similar video the guy says to strop on a flat surface or risk putting a microbevel the scandi grind. I'm asking because I want your thoughts before I buy a cheap used belt at Goodwill and mount it to a 1" x 4" board.

      Hi Heather! Thats a really good question. I have not had any issues with using it loose but if you're still not sure, go with the flat surface technique. If I understand the concept correctly, it supposed to give you more control and that can only be for the better. Please keep in touch and let me know how it works.

    Thanks for the Vid, viewing in 2020 and I have the same stone just purchased it in august of 2019. Try stropping on a piece of cardboard sometime. It is actually Works VERY well and it saves your belt.
