      Hi! Nice review! Short and straight to the point. Have you ever used the 5.11 Rush 72? If you did, between it and Molle II medium which one do you prefer? I'm kind of on the fence about buying one of them

      Genuine 'carbon fiber' contains nano materials to make it stronger /still lightweight. Also 'hook and loop' is the technical term, whereas 'velcro' is a brand name. Like tissue vs 'kleenex'.

    Add the side pouches from the large ruck. It adds a lot of space to an already good system. Just watch the zippers because they can slip behind the pouches. I was a medic and the extra space saved me from having to deal with an aid bag on shorter ops.

    Obviously there was a sergeant major on the committee that designed the ruck. “But if we put mesh pouches on there Joe’s will have gloves and socks and Hooah bars and all kinds of non uniformity stuff hanging out of there!”

    • @Stoney3K
      @Stoney3K 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      And then every random Joe just weaves a few feet of shock cord to the outside MOLLE on the back in a zig-zag pattern, and presto, improv mesh webbing.

      @adamc6371 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I actually kinda prefer it this way so you can attach more stuff to the sides. The camelbak is the perfect length for the sides of these and otherwise you can put either a sustainment pouch or e tool to Balance the weight out

  • @Williameagleblanket

    I first saw the MOLLE in 1999. Schofield Barracks. A platoon got to test it out. Then, in 2002, at Fort Drum we had a MOLLE ruck we tested as well. The sleeping compartment was actually a separate piece, then we got another MOLLE the ruck with the sleeping compartment attached which we used in Iraq. It was a better version. This was 2005-06. 🤘🇺🇸

    Medium ruck was the BEST pack ever issued, so good I finally had to obtain one for recreational use. By far the most used as a 12Bravo in theater. And absolutely right about the hops between fobs, medium was the way to go. Also, the compartments are good for separating demo charges from pogie bait ;)

    I used to use military gear when I was much younger. It looked cool, seemed functional. As I got older and more experienced, I realized the real engineering was in the specialized civilian stuff. It sits better, distributes weight better, moves better, packs better, etc. And it also comes with lifetime warranties.

    Thanks for the review, sold me on it. Picked one of these up recently. Definitely NOT designed in Natick... Somebody had a look at the old ALICE ruck and listened to the soldiers who used it.
    Former 11B, C Co. 4/9 IN, 6th ID (Light), Alaska in the early 90's. We had the CFP-90 (the old predecessor to the current large MOLLE) and regularly ripped straps and buckles off it. It was especially bad if you had the bitch bag/tripod or a baseplate. We were issued the large ALICE ruck when it had to be DX'd. This is a little small for AK, but still wish we had this for JRTC rotations/summer FTXs.

    Unrelated historical note: In the Napoleonic wars, the British packs were godawful. Chafed and even choked the soldiers using them. The French packs were well-made and much more comfortable. So you could always tell the veterans from the recruits in Wellington's army, because the veterans swooped on French packs after battle. Using a French pack proved you'd been in battle.

    It's actually one of my fav issued ruck or piece of gear issued. I can honestly live out of it for about 4-5 days weather pending but the fact that it actually has smaller pockets in the larger pockets is way better than the larger ruck that is literally 1 giant bag and two sustainment bags. For my larger ruck I use an Malice pack that has been modified heavily with extra pouches and it's leaps and bounds better than the larger ruck. This is also a great jumpable ruck too. If you need to wear it with body armor though I would suggest removing the frame though and I've swapped out to different shoulder straps and added the larger ruck waist pack or else that plastic frame will dig into your lower back super bad.

    The medium ruck is something that I do not like at all. You cannot fit anything in it if you are taking all the components of the sleep system (Bivy, winter, summer bags). You have to take everything out of the ruck to get to the sleeping bag versus just opening the bottom of the large ruck. You cannot attach the sleeping mat to it like you could with the top flap of the large ruck, there are no sustainment pouches, and fitting a camelback into it is a massive PITA.
    I have never done any civilian camping so I do not know about how it would work with that.

    Guten tag! Wie gehts. I love my surplus rucks and sacks both USA and European manufactured. They all may be heavy, heavier than domestic packs but they take so much more abuse and keep on working. I found an Army Molle II medium ruck on ebay for around 50 bucks and that thing has a lot of carrying capacity. The seller included several pouches and threw in a rain cover. It is a very comfortable pack. One of my favorite bushcraft packs is the Norwegian Army Rucksack. I can carry skis, axe, shovel, or rifle behind the side pockets. I was surprised that the NAR was featured in a Kirk Douglas and Richard Harris movie, The Heroes of Telemark. LOL...you can adjust the sternum strap depending on how muscular you are..."or not". Randall, you would be one helluva standup comedian just talking about Army gear and Army life.

    Wiggys used to sell a load carrying pack that used the Molle II frame, shoulder straps and belt. Basically a shelf at the bottom. It was great for carrying tools to do trail maintenance like a gas tank, chainsaw, axe.....
    I think the lack of mesh pockets was intentional as the mesh pockets can get snagged quite a bit if you have loaded packs piled up in the back of a truck or on terrain features.

      OCP sucks in the woods. BUT... if you dirty it up with a can of flat black, it works great in an urban environment. Hey, @UCS7kyY9hqClnfIYreR5xvpg that might make a great topic to do your next video on. Modification of certain camo for your AO.

    Review the Crossfire bags! The DG-3 and DG-16 look like a really cool improvement on this frame design, and also designed to be comfy with or without armor.

    I got a legit new/never issued one off amazon. Problem is: The inside is dry-sticky. Sticky enough that your hands will get mildly sticky and your gear ends up getting sticky. I separately bought a never-issued military butt pack and have noticed the same thing. Not sure what the deal is. Thoughts?

    • @georgegonzalez2478

      @hardcorecampinggear. Hi, don't know what the issue is with the stickiness of the waterproofing layer that's applied but...even mine had that same problem when issued new.Might be poor chemical composition and rapid break down period.I don't know any soldiers that got one issued that was dry and not sticky to the touch.The dry bags is the only thing I trusted putting any gear in the ruck to prevent any of that getting on it especially clothing.Still got my full Molle II Large with the 3 Day Pack and Waist Pack and other pouches,being a former Ranger I might have been given a pass cause I didn't have to return it to the CIF or other members of my Unit.We were and a small 8 person detail and I will not get into anymore information than that.All the best to you.

    I took the big pad from the new ruck and put it on my old alice pack and its amazing! I like my assult pack but hate that its acu id kill to find an assult pack in woodland/bdu/dcu. This new pack you got is making me want to try it. I always had problems with the plastic frames getting brittle and breaking in freezing temps im in northern Minnesota-30 to -60 is possible and not uncommon whats the worst cold environment you have had it in and did you have a frame break taking an impact?

    Thanks for the video Randall. I've been wanting to get the MOLLE assault pack for some time now. I have a similar pack, the Patrol pack in Woodland Camo. Not as big though. I will have to try and get my hands on one the assault packs. To me they didn't look all that comfortable, but since you say it is, I believe you, Especially since you have used it for so long. Good to know. I was wondering if you would ever be interested in doing a video on the medium ALICE pack? it's one of my favorite packs.

      Have the 3 day assault pack..too small for what I do. Have the lg. Molle ll ruck and love it but too big for most of my trips. Purchased the med ruck and find it is quite uncomfortable. Will put a lg ruck waist belt on it and hope it works. Other wise the size is great.
