she may not be angry but the hurt is there. that longing, nostalgia and sorrow is so clear in her breathy vocals. i sobbed. i watched the anna kendrick version after and it did nothing compared to arianas. its easy to cry for an actress... whats really hard is fighting back those tears like ariana seems to be doing.
Yes I agree ! She’s not acting this is genuine sorrow coming through which is obviously not going to be dramatic and theatrical
I also went back and watched Anna Kendrick’s version and I felt the same way. I felt more connected to Ariana’s version. My heart broke as I listened to her sing.
There wasn’t any anger but there was confusion and sorrowness... this version was connected with grieving. She was hurt but it’s like she thought it was her fault... :/

I got more of a quiet melancholy feeling from it. Like she's trying and struggling to accept it and is just tired from the sorrow of it all. I don't think belting at the top of your lungs is always necessary to convey true sadness.

She was probably thinking about mac throughout the entire thing, which would explain why she was singing not from anger but rather from grief :/
i totally got that the first time i heard it. it’s giving me more memories/past hurt kind of feels. i have never heard of this musical and i would’ve thought that was the mood for this song but ariana’s so not aggressive in any way so i feel like she rlly made this her song

I've never heard the song but when i listened to ariana singing it i almost criedddddddd i felt the hurt
she hit me from the beginning I don't know why some of u're saying you couldn't feel it when she started. my heart broke in a million pieces when I heard/watched this the first time. she was trying so hard to fight the tears back and I just can't take it. I'm obsessed with her breathy vocals they're so soft and you can feel all the emotion in them. the high notes were gorgeous. I can't listen to this without crying.

I think Ariana opens up a different angle to interpret the song. Other performers showed desperation, anger, detest, while Ariana added the element of confusion and being lost. When she poses all the questions, they are no longer rhetorical questions(like in the other versions), but genuine questions she wants to find answers for.

i think it’s interpreted in her own way, helping her out her own touch on the song. she connected the feeling of the song to her own experiences and something about this feels so sad for me to watch. it’s a different emotion but it’s her own emotion, and she used that to create her own interpretation. i was in tears when i saw and heard this! great reaction 🖤

i feel like she was just trying to be cold in the beginning to not break down but as the song went on she couldn’t help but feel it. i could be wrong but. she said she feels w the song so i can only imagine :/

The emotion builds as the song progresses, I know what you mean about waiting for the goosebump moment, but just missing it for the rawness of the song. But I feel like Ari is building a story as the hurt sinks in more. Still beautiful and she has an amazing voice.

I think Ariana interpreted the song as feeling powerless and sad. Like a kind of grief that she can't do anything about. Maybe that's why you weren't feeling it because you were expecting a powerful emotion where she used the song to express how she is tired of pain and how she is overwhelmed with sadness

i'm so sorry you couldn't really feel ariana's pain. i can't help but cry every time i hear this redemption
i think people experience hurt or pain in different ways... there are people who really show that anger but i guess ariana's version is a chance for other people to see that pain is hidden through confusion and grief in others... her breathyness blended well with the instrumentals
Ariana is deffo still grieving mac. I don’t see how you don’t see the hurt she seems like she’s about to cry like 5 times in the song. I think you’re seeing it as a breakup song whereas she’s singing it from a someone’s passed away and she’s still hurting way.
dont forget the loss she had in 2017, shes still grieving the loss of those 22 souls and still believes it's her fault (which it isn't)

Ari’s is the first time I’ve heard this song, so I listened to Anna Kendrick’s version and it did nothing for me. I actually felt more emotion in Ari’s. It felt nostalgic, melancholic, and just more sad.

Ari is telling us how she’s feeling in a melancholy and sorrowful way.Touring was just a distraction for her (in my opinion)-she’s JUST now processing all the emotions from everything she’s been thru in the past few years 🤍

I agree that Ariana sang the song with a more pop-like feel. However, I don't entirely agree with the comments about her "lack of emotion". Ariana chose to sing the song in her own way, and I think that the emotional message came through. She didn't convey the emotion of intense anger. Instead, she conveyed sorrow. I felt a sense of despair and sadness in this lighter rendition of the song. For me, it absolutely worked. I truly love this version.
One last thing... you really can't compare Anna Kendrick's voice to Ariana's. Even if you're only comparing their different ways of expressing the emotions of this song, it's still not a fair comparison. Anna's version is great as well. But to make up for her lesser vocal chops, she uses more emotive acting to compensate.
Those are my only critiques to this video. I still LOVE this video and have it saved to one of my playlists :)
I only heard this version to start with and in my opinion in the beginning I feel the hurt and the emotion whereas when I listened to anna kendricks I felt it was more staged and hurt for show. I can tell with Ariana that she’s felt the pain and is singing from the heart. I can’t stop listening to this version 💖
I always felt the build up of how she did it it was like how you don't really feel the hurt of something until you start trying to talk about it. People don't see my sadness or hurt or anger until they ask what's wrong and i try to tell them.
Nah, you're wrong. All the emotion is there. I feel every bit of it. Her performance is perfect.

Agreed. She placed that note on "find" really differently than she usually does, way more concentrated forward. It sounded beautiful and it was nice to get a different sound from her.

i just went and watched anna's version to see what you could be talking about. i personally dont agree. ariana nailed it. not to say anna didnt do a good job. ariana has a way with conveying her emotions in her voice more than anyone for me. anna did good, but vocal wise, and story telling, ariana did it for me.

I hadn’t heard of this song until seeing this video of Ariana singing it. I immediately feel in love with it. Beautiful melody and lyrics. And beautiful delivery from Ariana. I must say I disagree with Ariana bringing a more “pop” version to it or lacking the emotional connection in the beginning. As soon as she started singing I got goosebumps and started feeling melancholy. I went back to listen to other versions including Anna Kendrick’s and it didn’t do it for me the way this one did. Anika Noni Rose did a great job on a rendition she sang with the composer of the song. But other than that Ariana’s felt the most authentic because I felt her pain through her voice. It kind of reminds me of her song “ghostin” on her latest album that carries that softness but painful conviction with each word she sings. She did fantastic from beginning to end. ❤️❤️
I'm not getting a whole lot of pain from her either, but there is some emotion. That said, I don't think it can be compared to what was done in a play, because the emotion has to be a little more reserved when singing in a normal performance as compared to a play with acting in it. Just my two cents.

I think most of the people saying they really feel it are seeing it in her point of view which is totally right but if you watched or knew about the play and how the song needs to be felt, it's really not being told that way so it feels inaccurate despite the feels she does totally give

Hearing the story AG is telling, I feel the overwhelming sadness and abandonment. Anger would make it something else and not necessarily better. I think you're wanting "the Last 5 Years," AG is giving you "Ariana Grande 2018-2020."

Ariana's version was so lovely but I think the issue was I felt the instrumentals and the vocals didn't feel like they meshed super well. The instrumentals were the traditional ones, but her vocal quality was very RnB/pop. I think it would have been stellar to either hear her sing with a bit more of a theatre sound or if the instrumentals were more pop.

I had to listen to an anna kendricks version after this. I am not really an Arianna fan. I think a lot of her songs have poor diction and while I love Ariana’s voice I just don’t like listening to her because of the way she pronounces her words just ruins her songs for me .... but I really like Ariana’s version of this song over Anna’s. I think maybe it’s the breathiness of Ariana’s voice that makes it beautiful to me ? I felt more emotion with Ariana’s version then Anna’s. Like Kelly Clarkson told Selena Gomez ... sometimes it’s not the biggest voice in the room that makes the song great but it’s the emotion and how you make people feel the song. That is what Ariana’s version did for me
I totally agree. This is beautifully sung and arranged but I didn't see the intensity of emotion here. It's very pretty singing but I didn't get much angst.

Why are people saying “oh yeah she’s not singing from anger but from sorrow”... she did mention anger but she was also saying Ari didn’t appear or seem hurt. The gorgeous vocals were there and they’re heavenly but it was more pretty than an emotional performance. Now you can say that you did feel her hurt, but other people like the reactor are allowed to say they didn’t. I personally think audibly, it was a lovely performance. It’s better listening to her with my eyes closed than watching her sing. I feel like a song like this, you also have to visibly act. Since she wasn’t really acting, if I watch her, it takes me away a little from the emotions because she wasn’t visibly expressing them. She looked very “popstar” while singing it, compared to someone like Cynthia Erivo for example who sang it standing still but was visibly acting out the emotions in her face. So yeah, imo, this performance is better listened to with your eyes closed.

As a fan of Broadway I agree with much of what you're saying. She sings absolutely gorgeous and her technique cannot be disputed, but her stylistic choices for some areas and acting chops are just not there(in this video specifically). I'm not saying she can't act. I'm saying she chose not to which is fine, but as you said, it's not how this song is meant to be sung. I think she was too focused on looking at the camera and I would like it if she just zoned out and focused on the lyrics of the song. An improvement near the end where you can see her actually dive into what she's singing. Huge Ari fan though. I love hearing her voice in this setting and wish to hear more of her in this genre.
i see what youre saying but i think ariana just interpreted it in her own way. she is drawing from her own experience. it seems as though its sorrow and grieving and reminiscing more than anything else or at least that's what i hear. i just dont think she was going for how the original is sung at all.
