    I like that she isn't too whiny, or angry delivering this song. I've heard it done both ways. Her wounded survivor approach nails this song.

    This song is literally so freaking sad. I can’t. Ari really IS under-appreciated for her talent. She is objectively perfect.

    As one of the most popular pop singers in the world she really is underrated as a great vocalist.. And I agree with you that her slightly breathy voice is perfect for this piece,the most heartbreaking opening number in musical history.(not including your favorite musical Les Miz of course asking the audience to "Look Down"☺️🤭)

      Another request I would have for another incredible vocalist who started out in pop music.. The incomparable best-selling Soprano of all time Sarah Brightman went from a slightly silly disco dancing/singers in Hot Gossip to becoming ( at the time)Mrs . Andrew Lloyd Webber and the original Christine on Broadway and the body of work she's done on her own since she left the show. The duet of the original version of The Phantom of the Opera with Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford to me the state is still the gold standard for this immediately recognizable tune thus this would be my Request

    The ending of this musical is so heartbreaking because of how it's played out. It's such an awesome musical that really shows the highs and lows of relationships. it's amazing.

  • @acronyxx

    "Covered in scars I did nothing to earn" is absolutely the stand out line in that song but I love it love it for a different reason than you do. Because, to me, it shows that in Cathy's eyes she is 100% the victim and, to me, that is her biggest flaw as a character (and why she is so well written). JRB establishes it right off the bat with this line which I think is absolutely genius writing.

    • @a.prettygood6358
      @a.prettygood6358 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I absolutely agree with this. I've always seen this line as being the stand out piece that shows that Cathy doesn't see the the role she had in the dissolution of their relationship. For me this doesn't make me start off the play on her side, it make me question whether she has a realistic view of the realities of what happened.
      I know there were rewrites to the show because the original script too closely aligned to the actual story of Jason Robert Brown's marriage to Theresa O’Neill, and my understanding is that a large part of the issue was that the play doesn't cast her in a positive light. I think this is true. As much as Jamie is the one who cheats and leaves, I think this line is a good indicator right at the top of the show of how Cathy's character was written to subtly make the audience feel that everything Jamie did is a bit her fault. I do think it's beautiful writing and makes for a great show, but it's also potentially a bit mean spirited toward his ex wife.

    I just want to say that I really appreciate your channel. I've only ever had a very passing interest in musical theater. It's something I generally like but pay little attention to, for whatever reason. I stumbled on your channel shortly after Hamilton released on Disney+. Since then I have learned a lot from your reaction videos and have developed a much bigger love of musical theater. I love what you do, and it is definitely helping me learn to love musical theater more than I ever have before.

    Always a pleasure to watch you and the videos. I love how secure you are about expressing your emotions. Arian, no doubt, was gifted with a beautiful voice. The breathy quality in the lower register of her voice is effective. That said, I would love her upper voice to be a bit more clarion & focused with the control needed to also keep it light. I really believe she can do it or if not, get a legitimate voice teacher so that she could learn the proper voice placement. She has so much potential. Thank you Patrick and since you don't tire of me asking, I will continue to request a video of you. As a diehard fan, would love to learn about your history. Perhaps on patreon?

    Amazing analysis as usual! I love that you take these songs I'm obsessed with and add so much depth to how I understand them. I end up appreciating these songs even more.
    Ugh Ariana is a genius! Her choices are so, so striking.
    I'm super curious about what you think about Cynthia Erivo's rendition of this song, especially about the choices she makes with her body, particularly when she sings "Covered with scars I did nothing to earn" and the final "And I'm still hurting."
    Love this channel so much! I learn something interesting and new every time I'm here.

    Anna Kendrick literally CRUSHES me in the film version. I'd love for you to examine that.

    • @MrNorcal81
      @MrNorcal81 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. Kendrick, during the first few verses, singing live on camera, sat in that chair literally without moving but the terrible pain in her voice came through tragically. She didn't need to move an inch to show how badly Cathy had been hurt by Jaime. And that one line "Jaime decides it's his right to decide" is a killer.

    Ariana sounds gorgeous here. And I love the accompaniment instrumentation. I think I still prefer watching Lea’s performance from her rehearsal of this song - even though it’s just with a piano - because you watch her and I feel that she IS the character, not just in her voice but with every look and expression.

    What you said at the end about that line (which is great), "Jamie is over and where can I turn? Covered with scars I did nothing to earn" getting the audience instantly on her side was interesting, as I've watched this musical many times, but have never been on Cathy's team. I understand and have sympathy, but I always connect to Jamie's side of the story more.

    I think as a vocalist, she's the jack of all trades, master of none. Sure, in almost all respective genre, she's not the best there is, but her voice can fit a lot of styles of music. Not only that but she can choose and combine differentt vocal styles, to create a distinct and unique sound or to spice up her performance.
    With a wide controlled vocal range at her disposal, makes her one of the most versatile singer in the industry.
    Not too mention, that she can dance, act, and is very charismatic and funny.

    • @noelle5128
      @noelle5128 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I really think, like he was saying, that her pop music is just the tip of the iceberg. I think saying "the jack of all trades, master of none" is selling her a bit short. She's insanely talented, sure, with a lot of range, but I think her control, power, and experience outshines her versatility. She's also only 27 and has improved greatly in the past 5 years alone, so who knows where she'll be in 5 more years.

    For me when I hear the “covered with scars I did nothing to earn” it is almost a red flag. Throughout the song I can feel for her and really on her side without even having heard the other side of the story. However, when she sings this line I have a realization that this woman apparently does not think she has done anything wrong and is 100% a victim. When a relationship does not work out it’s usually not just 100% one person’s fault (unless it’s a really cruel, abusive relationship of course) and when she says that I know that she’s somewhat in denial about how she contributed to the breakdown of this relationship. It makes me want to hear from the other party and find out what actually has happened between the two of them.

    I agree with so much of what you have to say, but she’s consistently just behind the beat on the first half of the song. Plus, I really I wish she would enunciate when she’s belting. She is so breathy and nasal so she can't pronounce 'M' of 'Jamie'. And made that chin move twice at the beginning. So I could not feel the sadness of the song except a bit when the orchestra comes in with that lovely cello. I think she is a perfect pop star, lovely, talented. May be she should be back to musical theatre when she is older and deeper. Thank you for your videos, you are helping me learn, compare and be a better listener.
