    I've watched this video 10+ times to try and understand how people can do it so quickly and I figured it out by watching the notation, gameplay and hand-cam. I can't believe I didn't think to push my control stick fully left or right before shielding, this saves time and allows you to already have the stick in the right direction before the shield comes up, meaning you just have to roll your stick to the next notch. I wish this was said in the commentary tbh, would've saved me so many failed attempts haha. Thanks anyway SSBM Tutorials. Love your work.

    I'm really glad that you touched on controller variance with this technique, I feel like it's glossed over a lot of the time during shield drop discussion and it means a lot that you put so much time of this video into it.

      mewantremote we actually had a check (pause buffer) to see if your controller was proficient at it or not but thought it was unnecessary. i've used a "bad" controller for shield dropping in the past and was still able to be consistent with it so i figured i shouldn't add a reason to john about it in the video =P

    I am a fox player and I feel as though my fox is pretty solid right now, I've been getting decent tournament results , but my shield pressure game is pretty weak. Currently my shield pressure consists of approaching my opponents shield with either a drill or a nair L-cancelled into a shine hoping they try to shield grab my ariel and get shined. If they hold shield I wave dash back out of my shine and react. Could you do a video on shield pressure with fox and maybe showing some practice techniques? Also thanks for all the great content, keep it up!

    A couple comments are of people wondering why they're accidentally rolling, and I also saw a confused comment that assumed you need to hit left/right while already in shield. This is not true, and it's what's causing people to roll. To shield drop with this method, you need to hit left/right the moment before you shield. Then drop down a notch when you want to shield drop. That means you can either hit left/right while in the air, and then shield once you've landed on a platform OR you can simply start a dash while on a platform and then shield before actually moving anywhere. I wish Kira had said this explicitly in the video, but you can see what I mean at 0:45 where he dashes right before shielding.

    • @Tripleyou
      @Tripleyou 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TheYoungMilo You're absoultely right. I hope Kira would take note of this kind of comment. Sometimes I feel like these tutorials are good, but a bit hastely done. Explain every detail you can on the given subject. For example you can Shield Drop with out a tilted shield.
      You can tilt your shield during shield stun (inputting the direction you want to tilt while in shield stun, and it will end up there when shield stun ends).
      Running Shield Drops (pressing down while in dash or run a few frames before pressing shield).
      Mechanics, frame data and application.
      When to use and when not to use the different variations

    • @SSBMTutorials
      @SSBMTutorials  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tripleyou Thank you for your input, I'll include that stuff when we go over Shai drops. I do want to cover every aspect, and I try to by seeing what people normally have trouble with when I teach them in person, however for the rest of the world sometimes issues come up that I haven't seen before. Also we are directed to keep them short, half because it holds people's attention better and half because of the way TH-cam works behind the scenes, but I'll try to do that next time

    • @SoftBreadSoft
      @SoftBreadSoft 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know this is an ancient comment lol but this is really up to luck/chance with a stock controller because they're all casted from plastic and will have natural slight variation. To actually get consistent shield drops it's necessary to slightly sand the existing notches until it has the correct cardinal angle (Kadano and others have guides on this.) Even then it can wear over time and you have to keep correcting it. This is why a lot of people think shield dropping is lame

    • @GustoFormula
      @GustoFormula 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @SoftBreadSoft
      @SoftBreadSoft 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It requires specific angles to be hit at the south west and south east notch. if it's not within value you will airdodge in place (.66250 to .68750, a very very small margin.)

  • @BinanoSplat
    @BinanoSplat 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This tutorial is slightly incomplete because it doesn't touch on how you can also input a shield drop by simply moving the stick down at the correct pace. That's important to know because you won't necessarily always be in shield stun not will you always be planning to do the shield drop before landing on the platform. Taking the extra time to angle the shield to the side before going down is superfluous in those situations, and only adds time and room for error.

    • @SSBMTutorials
      @SSBMTutorials  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      BinanoSplat Most players hold the controls tick in one direction before their shield actually comes up, very few people use that method. But you're right, I should have included it

I know shield dropping can be used for the same tactics but isai dropping seems so much more natural. are there other uses for shield dropping? from this video it seems like holding shield while standing on a ledge, then dropping down could be usefull.... any other tips?

  • @KidOrochimaru
    @KidOrochimaru 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I may sound like ultrascrub 5000 here, but what's the advantage of the shield drop over just dropping through the platform without shielding first? I've done all of the offensive options after the shield drop without ever using the technique. The only advantage I'm seeing is quickly getting under the platform after blocking an attack, oh and this is cool you can attack afterward the same as plainly dropping through the platform. It feels like the benefit of a shield drop is a defensive technique to block an attack while on a platform and escape quickly, which would make the benefit of the shield drop overplayed, so I must be missing something.

    • @SSBMTutorials
      @SSBMTutorials  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Falcon Starblaze Shield drops are actually 3 frames faster (i think its 3) than normally dropping, plus yes, the defensive tactic is huge over all other out-of-shield options

  • @thedevilkid7
    @thedevilkid7 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    To add to this video; Some characters can shield drop easier than others as well, also if you find that you're spot dodging a lot try putting the analog stick in the upper left/right notch and swoop down. Still works and helps prevent spot dodges

    • @thedevilkid7
      @thedevilkid7 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      SSBM Tutorials I find it's easier to Shield drop with certain chars
      Edit* I should clarify, Its easier to act out of shield dropping with certain characters. The action itself isn't character dependant, And for my last point you still have to swoop down all the way, the zones are the bottom left notch to the bottom right of the analog stick. Technically all you have to do to shield drop is slowly bring your analog down while holding shield (the timing is strict in melee). It's just easier to swoop in melee.

    Can you explain buffering your shield drop while in shield stun so you don't have to angle the shield at all? Are the inputs the same? And why don't you have to be angling? In your example clips, the shields are all angled to the sides

    • @SSBMTutorials
      @SSBMTutorials  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Tim Nguyen The inputs are the same, you just do it while you're in shield stun. I always hold my control stick to the side whenever I get to a platform and then lightshield if I'm worried about getting shield poked but you don't have to do it that way.
      You don't have to angle because you can move your control stick to the left, and then roll it down while you're in shield stun. It'll automatically shield drop as soon as possible

    • @timnguyen1374
      @timnguyen1374 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      to do aerials in any direction while shield dropping with the control stick

  • @TheSilentPassion
    @TheSilentPassion 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    So I've been working on shield dropping for a while, and I can get it with an increasing amount of reliability. My problem is doing aerials during the drop. I saw the input list briefly in this video, and it's the same list of inputs I'm doing, so I'm guessing it's a timing problem.
    Should I be inputting my c-stick aerial as I'm inputting the drop on the control stick? Or is there just a really quick timing once I drop the shield where I can input an aerial? Without the aerials, I can only use shield dropping to escape platform pressure, but I'd like to add in the rest of my options.

  • @Spyderjew
    @Spyderjew 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Heres hoping I can get a response even tho the vid is a little old at this point. So, you mention that shield dropping is somewhat controller dependant and I am feeling it extremely hard. To the left, I can use it with 100% consistency even in tournament. However for the life of me doing it to the right with the same motion (of going 1 notch down) just doesnt work. Do you know if there are any specific nuances to the right on one of the OG white controllers?

    • @SSBMTutorials
      @SSBMTutorials  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +SpyderJ Yeah there are problems with controllers often on the right side. If you know about Kadano at all he does custom controller mods and the community has basically found that analog sticks / registry angles are inconsistent across the board. You can either look up how to mod it yourself to get correct angles or buy one from him as a lot of pros have done already

    • @Spyderjew

    Can you explain what notching the controller is? I have a pretty new controller, but can only get shield drop by rolling the stick very slightly without touching the notches, which is super difficult. I almost always end up spot dodging or rolling. Overall, I usually like these videos a lot, but it seems like a lot of common and significant issues were not addressed in this one.

    This video makes no sense to me. So are you supposed to hold the movement stick sideways while still sheilding, then drop through the platform and push the c stick to airiel attack as soon as you drop through the platform? If so why can't you just use the A button instead of the c stick? Also why do you need to push sideways on the directional stick while in shield, can't you just drop straight down through a platform?

    • @SSBMTutorials
      @SSBMTutorials  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      shield dropping is completely controller dependent and requires you to either get lucky with your controller, or manually notch the correct angles yourself. Kadano has some videos on how to do so

    • @SSBMTutorials

      +Kyle Blasberg May be your controller but go slow first. Shield, slowly move your control stick to the left, then slowly roll it down to the next notch.

    • @sebastianzavala4478
      @sebastianzavala4478 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're probably moving the stick too slow, try shielding and moving the stick almost at the same time, and then move it down one notch

    • @TheYoungMilo
      @TheYoungMilo 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Vergilthenew hit left/right just before you shield. then move down a notch. Shielding first or at the same time as left/right (like Sebastian said) will cause you to roll, and moving the stick too slowly has nothing to do with it. If anything, moving the stick slowly while in shield will actually keep you from rolling.

  • @WastedHog

    You didn't even tell us where on the control stick, exactly, to move... Sliding the stick downward is pretty much a training wheels method that's not as optimum...

    • @SSBMTutorials
      @SSBMTutorials  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Superkidra You move it from Straight Left to the next notch below it. To be honest there is no optimal angle, it differs depending on the controller. This is not a training wheels method, this is the one that I personally use and that many other pros use as well (ex. Axe).

    • @WastedHog
      @WastedHog 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      SSBM Tutorials Yeah, it's not consistent, but 'between left and down' isn't very specific...
      Also, the fact that pros can use it well doesn't mean it's not an inferior method that requires either sacrificing, slowly adjusting, or buffering something off of a stationary shield.

    • @SSBMTutorials
      @SSBMTutorials  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's the notch specifically (bottom left, aka 7 o'clock angle). I believe I said this in the video.
      There's nothing inferior about it, that's just how it is performed lol. Buffering is not bad, in fact it's preferred.

    • @WastedHog
      @WastedHog 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      SSBM Tutorials So, with your method of sliding downward, how would I perform a standing shield and then shield drop without my shield getting hit first?

    • @SSBMTutorials
      @SSBMTutorials  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You would have to slowly angle your shield sideways then shield drop. That's why most of the time I am always angling my shield to the side. Normally I would buffer it during shield stun if I didn't already angle my shield.

      Why do u need to report him? Anyways it took me a while to find melee without paying $50+. So I recommend flea markets (keep looking even if you don't think you can find it. Trust me I looked for it for months and then found it, it feels so satisfying to find one.) or local game stores that sale GC games. If you become impatient look for a disc only on eBay and then get a case. It doesn't have to be the original melee case, you could also buy these small square cases that can hold 2 games on each side.
