  • Visit www.sunsetclassics.com/1961-vw... to see this amazing 1961 23-Window VW Bus for sale from Sunset Classics in Minneapolis MN.
I bought this bus from Florida in 2010. The previous owner used to drive this bus to the beach to make and sell hats he made out of palm tree branches. I promised the previous owner I would treat the bus to a first class restoration. In 2011 I sent it to Jeff Gagnon of Vintage VW in Sioux Falls, SD for a complete rotisserie restoration and after nearly three years the end result is breathtaking. Jeff specializes in restoring VW Buses. He restored my beautiful dove blue 1959 Double Door Panel Van that can be found in the Cars Sold section of Sunset Classics.
The 23 Window Deluxe is viewed by many as the most prized VW Bus ever made. Nothing beats the view out the sunroof and skylights on a beautiful day driving through the mountains, country or woods. Just 64,986 of these Deluxe 23 Window Microbuses were made during all years of production 1951-1963. To put that in perspective, a total of 76,000 Porsche 356s were produced and you don't see many of those tooling around the streets these days anymore.
Enjoy the video then stop by the link above for the full story of this bus as well as three very detailed photo galleries - and of course to make an offer on this amazing bus!

'Beautuful restoration! Obviously a labour of love!
'Brought a used '61 Deluxe Window Van (Samba) for the equivalent of $400 CDN in '69 from the mega VW dealer in Cologne, West Germany. (They had used & maintained it largely in the tourist rental trade,) 'Left the back seats with the dealer; & curtained & camperized it in southern Spain. 'Drove it over 23,000 km (about 14,000 miles through 20 plus countries & principalities) from North Africa to the Asian side of Turkey. (As Canadians with visas, we transited three Soviet bloc countries as well.)
'Great fun & great adventures - on coastal, mountain, beach & desert highways, roads & donkey tracks. 'Also the wacky traffic of Paris, Madrid, Casablanca, Marrakech,
Valencia, Barcelona, Marseilles, Nice, Monaco, Genoa's Autostrada!, Pisa, Florence, Rome, Naples, Athens, Istanbul, Sofia, Belgrade, Budapest, Vienna, Munich, Innsbruck, Salzburg, Zurich, Bern, Geneva, Amsterdam, etc.
'Cheap engine rebuild in Austria (burned two pistons & perhaps some valves on Austria's version of the Autobahn by pushing it too hard on a hot spring day). 'Repairs took only 24 hours for well less than $100 CDN @ the VW dealer in Amstetten.
It only had a 1200 or 1300 cc engine, so it was almost always floored in any terrain!
'Sold it at the beginning of the summer peak season in '70 in Amsterdam - also for $400 CDN!!! We threw in a cook stove, dishes, etc.
"Those were the days my friend!"
P.S. We always referred to it as 'a red & white VW microbus with 25 windows & a sunroof"! I.e. We counted the front door's 'no-draft' or vent windows. It actually had 27 panes of glass of course; if you counted the two part sliding windows in the front doors!
    'Peace' man!

Bravo....cheers...magnificent! I'm a recently discovered VW fanatic and love these vintage long forgotten dusty gems of the road. My bucket list includes obtaining a 1963 pearl white beetle and an early sixties camper. Great job on the restoration. Thanks for sharing...cheers!

Beautiful. Such detail. You've done incredible work, and must have amazing sources for those hard-to-find, no longer manufactured bits.

The difference between the 1961 and 1962 VW Bus is the front turn signals. 1961 is the last year for small bullet shaped clear front turn signals above the headlights, and 1962 do used the large flattened Amber front turn signals.

Now going for over $200,000 at The Barett Jackson auction for a "perfect" example. Would've been a great investment now
