yeah but 60-80 mile range... cheap city cars are making that. if i spent 60k on this, then I want the range that 60k should give me, which is at least 120 miles.
Whenever I see one of these, it gives me an instant acid trip... weird. he-he Now you just need to install a wind-turbine on top to charge itself. lol (no-no-no!!)
Absolutely Marvelous!!! I wish you guys had a Boston area location so I could come hang out! I grew up with VW busses and Vanagons and Eurovans. My Favorites were my '89 Vanagon Wolfsburg Carat. and My '87 Vanagon Syncro! Keep up the awesomeness!
One of the joys of these vehicles was going on camping trips or even across the country. But it's just not doable with these limited range electric converts. But if you're happy with 65 miles between charges then it is nice for local jaunting around.
Boy what a Looker !! Such clean & tidy installation that even surpasses the company prestige. Just use some Dry Cell Batteries which can charge faster & runs longer than Lithium. Look into that Australian company who makes those Silicon graphite cells.
I had a very pretty ‘64 Beetle converted. With a Hyper 9HV motor it is very quick. With 3 batteries in the frunk and 4 behind the back seat, it’s got a lot of range, well over 150 miles. Still sorting the steering, shifting and random rattles though.
Definitely worth keeping note that it was in fact the bus which motivated you to start this business. Good impetus. Obviously, the fourth gear worked, or else you would not have ended the video on that note. Cheers!
Beautiful, brilliant, wonderful! Thank you for doing this! Thank you for keeping the beauty of the past alive without all the pollution, war, destruction and problems of the toxic oil economy. Have you ever thought of converting a 1980's Suzuki Samurai to EV?
I think this is the best conversion I have seen. VW is soooo missing the boat by changing the body style too much. I am sure some mods have to happen for new safety regs, but they will never sell any if they push what they have right now. You are right on point. I think 90% of the VW is the body style of that era, up to early 70's. That is what makes it so cool, and then electric keeps in line with us earth people. I wish the best for you.
Woooow...Congrats....very clean installation...oh my God...I love your bus !!! By the way....i love San Diego....i have been there in 1998 ! Gerold from Germany
I remember you couldn’t even give these buses away for free. They ended up in farm fields being a rain shelter, lunch shed or a goat pen. They are notorious dangerous in case of an accident. No frontal protection and I have seen them wrap sideways around lamp standards.
It strikes me that that battery gauge looks out of period to the rest of the vehicle. They should have created an analog-styled gauge that imparts all the same information, but with nested needles.
Why not you replaced all the lights with leds, digital meters are ok especially if you have a stereo system with digital displays. If you keep everything original then you must keep the AM only radio along with the vacuum tubes and vibrator to power the b+. I'm referring to the 50's version.
I'd need a range of 100 miles because I go on a 80 mile round trip to my sisters place each month (maybe twice) and that fudge factor going to the store and pizza after is required. ;-)
The real problem with the buses was they could not get the passenger compartment warm in cold weather. They are really a SoCal vehicle. I had a bus ( not a nice vintage like this ) years ago in Seattle and I drove it with a Whitney point blanket over my lap to keep warm. And the defroster would not keep the windows clear. I had to keep a squeegee on the dash, lol. I use to think, does it not get cold in Germany, what were these guys thinking? haha.
Camper version with 150 miles of range please. Wondering when older Nissan Leaf drives and charging units will start showing up in vehicles, but with new , larger battery packs. Would a modified Leaf battery pack fit underneath a bus?
Have you taken any of your FANTASTIC electric conversions to Jay Leno? He may want to do an episode with you once he sees what you're doing, and how well you doo it!
Love this concept. What is the range of cost on an electric conversion on one of these? I would prefer a maximum range and potential to tow a small trailer. Can the battery bank be set up to charge off solar? Thanks, Ginger
Hi David, I have few questions... may be stupid..but need to know.. Do we need to use clutch to shift the gears? most of the modern evs dont have gears.. So how gear shifting works in this?
Chamara Indrajith For the most part you can drive in 3rd gear w/o shifting. But you do need to use the clutch if shifting into other gears like 2nd for hills at low speeds or 4th on the highway.
Beautiful conversion! Did you do anything to the suspension? Sure the bus was designed to carry a bunch of people, but I'm sure the traction pack weight increase wasn't insignificant.
What about adding a higher voltage generator, and pulleys and belts to the electric motor shaft, then connect the generator cables to the batteries, you are charging the batteries as you drive, plus solar panel on roof. Not explained well, but I know what I mean.
STUNNING WORK. SAD THAT WITH ALL THE ATTENTION TO DETAIL EVERY ONE OF THEIR BUILDS HAS THE CHEESY ELECTRIC BATTERY METER. CAN'T COME UP WITH A CHROME RING OR SOMETHING TO MAKE IT NOT STICK OUT? STILL NO CLEAR EXPLANATION AS TO WHY A TRANSMISSION IS NEEDED.
Putting the battery inside the bus is a waste of space. A better solution would have been to put it under the floor of the bus in a reinforced tray that would run the length to the floor from the front subframe to the rear. This would allow for greater battery capacity as well as spreading the weight better.
We can place the batteries under the floor now that we've started using Tesla batteries. Wasn't possible before with the type of batteries used in this build. -db
@@Zelectric Things are farther apart on the west coast. 150 is still too short. Vegas is 300 from Los Angeles. Shoot for that. Also anything less than 70 on our freeways will get you a ticket or killed so you need a higher gear. Can you use Tesla charging stations? That would help with your range issue. I won't even mention the charge controller.

Beautiful!!!!
Absolutely love it!! Great job. I'm going to start saving money now.
Beautiful. The engine bay is so clean and simple. I love it.
I am blown away .I have all ways had a LOVE for these buses ,and this one is a BEAUTY and electric FANTASTIC
That bus is just amazing!!! Beautiful job!!!
Can't wait to turn my 68 bug into one of these electric conversions. Great job Dave!!!

Incredible work, David. You're living the dream! At least until you deliver it back to the client.

Vw should remake the vw t1 with an electric engine and solar panels
If you ever come to Maine can I have a ride?!
Love it!
Great, any Nissan leaf components on the build up? I can't until the new solar car Glass come out 👍
I count 23 windows on the 21 window bus - plus a roof opening.
For some reason someone combined the door windows in that equation and it just stuck.

So how much did it all cost ?
had it been used in any of old movies??

I bet these don't catch on fire either.
I’d buy one. But the range.

how does the upgrade cost ?
It seems that each build is unique since they do body repairs. I saw a kit around 7500 somewhere. Google EV conversion kits if you are into DIY.

100 grand for 60-70 range? Yeah when the range hits 200 I’ll pay the 100G for a old Westfalia sixties era please

The only thing i don't like in the VWicro bus is the Sun Roof, i absolutely hate it, feels as if i am sitting in a effing Rickshaw...🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦
I don’t get the point of gear in an EV?
It’s still a motor with a transmission.
