Al maybe you can see about bringing on the Four season farmer Eliot Coleman, the 3 of you could pick his brain on using high tunnels and such to grow all winter. Hes just up here in Maine. His daughter is running the farm now I've seen.
I'm interested in the high tunnels and growing year round

I'm 81. The older you get, the faster time seems to pass - except when you are in the dentist's chair...
Zip ties, duct tape, and WD40 can fix about 95% of things. that's right!

The other advantage of homemade is, chemical free. Most people would be shocked to read ingredients & see how many chemicals are in our food

We always took the tree out after Christmas. String cranberries raisins and popcorn for the birds dad would pack pinecones with peanut butter and role them in bird seed to hang on the tree it was used to feed the birds the rest of the winter.

Count you friends I am 79 my husband and I would lie in bed and say WHAT HAPPENED TO THE 50'S? This summer Cary went to be with the Lord so it's just me but I get my fun as if my best friend was still here with me. Maybe you should look ahead how you will maintain after the big #'s real big numbers and also many older people stay healthy as they stay active. I keep asking for your wives to join you guess not an appropriate suggestion Love all three of these ladies, and of course you guys are pretty entertaining. Merry Christmas.

Q for next podcast... Al -- ya haven't said how the new grid down system is working / holding up now that we're in not so sunny days. Any issues / quirks ? Been looking at getting a whole system for my lil homestead 😊 ... the sticker price is lil hard on the wallet but things are really getting crazy with utility prices going sky high! Electric has gone up 21½% this past year!
Really enjoy the shop talk podcast... It's crazy that 26 more it'll be a year... Keep up great job guys... really envy y'all... I've got about 26-27 yrs on y'all 😮 but at least I'm still trying...

Hey guys I love the podcast. I've been raising hogs for 50 years now so Ben your sows could definitely be if lesser quality genetics than your boar they could have been bred to early as well that will stunt there growth.
Al depends on what you want from your hogs you are better off crossing two breeds to get hybrid vigor in the offspring
Vigor makes them grow faster and have less sickness and parasite resistance. We prefer oldline Duroc x Hampshire great quality of meat And growth rate. Contact me if you would like to talk about it. I know some breeders in the Carolina area and one that delivers all across the country.

Ben, new subscriber to your channel and I LOVE YOUR FAMILY!! Meg is my Mentor! I went back and watched the past 3 YEARS of your videos, I cried when your daughter was born! We did the same as you, sold our house in the city and moved to our property, built a log home and began homesteading. But, we are retirement age, so wish we would have done it 30 years ago. Good for you doing it now! If you are ever in Minnesota, look us up! 😊

We have a place on the Foothills Parkway between Newport TN and Asheville NC where we like to set to watch the Sunrise when we visit down there. Its amazing watching the Sunrise over the mountains and listening to creation wake up.

What is the BIGGEST thing on your homestead you wish you’d done differently? Jason, how are the bees doing through winter? Any plan to try a milk cow? Why or why not? Unless you have a test done respiratory illnesses have similar symptoms. Could be influenza,RSV, a corona virus, a rhino rhinovirus. Hope none of you get a secondary illness or anything bad enough to seek medical attention

Parasites will stunt pigs like crazy. 50 years ago my sow had a litter. When weaned , we sold half the litter to a neighbor. We wormed ours. The neighbor didn’t. When ours got old enough and big enough to butcher we happened to see the neighbor’s other 1/2 of the litter. . It was dramatic how little his had grown. No joke. If I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes, I wouldn’t have believed it.

A corned beef can be make from any piece of beef. Just corn it like you would a brisket.

Happy holidays I recently got a new job working for the Humane Society Animal shelter in my area as a kennel technician, veterinarian assistant . I am completely exhausted by the end of the day lots of cleaning of dog kennels...dog walking ect.
Unfortunately adoptions are slow lot of the dogs have been there since early summer and haven't been adopted yet it's emotionally exhausting also . My homestead projects are on hold but I did get to go out last week and work on my compost area with the chickens as I had a Spirit of energy.
My fall /winter gardens coming well it didn't like the 26° weather I'll try to cover them up next time we get a cold spell.
I will not be celebrating Christmas working at the Humane Society .
We will be closed to the public but of course the animals need care volunteers coming out to help also.
Weather is getting cooler so made some cabbage soup with ham.

In other words are you "2 A" proponents? 3. Did it take some time to get used to not having neighbors that you could see from your front door? More a suggestion than a question. You should have all your wives join in maybe this one or maybe a couple times a year.
This was my wife's suggestion a few episodes back however I agree . We both watch your channels and love your individual channels and all of you are inspiration to us .

A cheap geothermal system for heating/cooling a greenhouse is bury waterline in coils 8-10ft deep (below frost line for us northerners)) under where you want your greenhouse, then lay some same as in floor heatting cover in sand and lay patio bricks on top. then all need is a water pump circulating to charge up the ground with heat in summer wile cooling off a bit and heating enough for cold crops in winter. turns the ground into a thermal battery. I am not a cake person, the blueberry pie sounds great and cheese cake(not a real cake haha) sounds even better.

Guy’s I’m not familiar with y’all’s parts of the country but here in Texas we trap and or hunt wild hogs and there’s no season for them you can hunt all year round and they taste fantastic and some of them are very large at 400 pounds and up and they are also good eating
