Guys this has been so interesting for an old lady. I live in the suburbs and have been here 40 years gardening in the back yard. I can have 3 + hens and a neighbor that gives me all his bags of grass clippings. I built a walled compost ben 5x10 x2 and left the clippings for two years. This week, I began cleaning out the compost ben and so far I am about half way and have dug out a dozen, 5 gallon buckets of top soil. One neighbor saves all of her veggie scraps for my little hens, I work for 20 minutes and rest for 20 minutes. Getting old is not for Sissies. We are 81 and 79 next week and #PressOnRegardless. Thank you for great information.
You are inspiring!!!
You got that right!
Getting old ANT for sissies!
Y’all are rocking it without the chair!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ 😊
I love that!
#PressOnReguardless
It was a joy #Billy 😊
I see some comments that are neg
And I don’t think 🧐 they understood the topic or weren’t into learning
But that’s okay
I’m to broken and at 73, I am watching and learning things I wish I had learned when I was 50! And not laying in my hospital bed.
But that is okay, right.
Until someone comes along and turns time back, I get to enjoy guys that are doing it.
Guys that are still raising their
Kids and still cooking.
I was blessed with 2 sons. Doctor told my hubby to keep my pg and barefoot. He said my body was made for cooking babies. Well didn’t turn out like that for me. But I have 6 grandkids. And two great 👍. So things are good.
My sons are givers. Not takers. And they raised and are still raising models of themselves!
Anywho……..
Im so happy I found y’all here together!
Thank y’all
👍🎤👍
I have 26 hogs and 20 chickens....I was going to a local farmstead and getting their day old or unreliable veggies. It was wonderful. Also, I picked up neighbors leaves and used them to fill raised beds. By tge next year it broke down and turned into black dirt filled w worms.
Thank you for having Billy on as a guest. Great information for all of us homesteaders.😊
You guys lost me when Billy dominated the podcast. His ideas are great, but the rest of you should share as well. Can’t wait for next week.
I have zero animals, yet learned a ton on this podcast. I thought it was fantastic.
Awesome Talk...🙂🙂🙂
I would love to see the video where Billy shows you how to make the compost extract. That sounds awesome.
Agree.
You just watched "Billy's show" I tuned in to hear the other 3.
Me too
Great podcast guys... Lots of great information! I loved your hour and a half podcast too!❤
Another Great Podcast ! Very Informative ! May All if You have a wonderful week !
Billy is great and full of life. You all made a great podcast. Thank you and God bless+
Years ago my in-laws had a restaurant. They had a 55 gallon drum that we put the slops in. We had about 30 pigs and 100 chickens. We would pick up the drum each week. Then, I would feed my pigs and chickens from that. I used very little feed. I have always wondered why people today don't do that. Glad to hear someone bringing this up.
Wow that was spectacular . What a wealth of experience. and knowledge. Thank you all !
Jason, I've installed literally 100's of winches. I'd be happy to give you a hand. Switch power is tricky, due to the amp draw. The best way is either one of two. 1. install a quick connect, and just connect it when you need it, 2. the better way is to run your power wire that goes from your winch to the battery, run it to a battery disconnect, and then to your battery. The disconnect will be your "switch". And it can handle the load of amps the winch will draw.
Rolling out round bales works...unless you have a slope and too much compaction. After a dry season, the wind and rain washed away the round bales I had rolled out. I couldn't believe it. We are working on "planting water" by using a subsoiler on contour. I think that along with rolling out round bales will work. -Mike
Billy. Nice to see someone else from KC here. How 'bout those Chiefs! These guys are fantastic to learn from.
Do be very careful with straw and hay sourcing. Anything that's been hit with grazon or other aminopyralids will stop fruit from setting on anything you plant on that spot for years.
I really enjoyed this!!! Thank y'all so much! I will be applying this way for gardening and farming!! If no one has listened today, you definitely have helped me out!!
Very cool to see all of you together!
Sweet can't wait for the three on Billy's channel 😊
Great information!!! Not as laid back as usual and well worth the time to watch!
GREAT FRIDAY SHOP TALK. DIDN'T EVEN SEEM LIKE LIKE HOUR AND 1/2. WENT TO QUICK. I WAS READY FOR MORE❤. THANK YOU. SE MICHIGAN 🀄🏡👏👏👏👏👍👍
Nice to meet Billy!!
Thank you guys! Love the podcast! 5 stars 😊
Great show. Billy is always entertaining and knowledgeable.
Thanks guys from Ontario Canada
True story about round bales, I've asked a local hay farmer, I've even used the old bales and had good success. Great show guys!
Always good to see Billy. Thx for another good podcast.
👏👏👏
Man this was a good one Guys
I love to hear and learn from ya ..even a back yard garden like my self..I have been make come post for 3 years ..maybe not the high volume ya do but I’m please on my results 🌱
Thanks Billy and all ya fine folks 💚💚✌🏽
Definitely appreciate Billy coming on he definitely taught us a lot. I'm down here in Florida where I have a lot of sand I definitely need a lot of compost.
Awesome podcast. Cantwait till Billy comes to Ben and Jason's places. Jason he is the man to advise you on your drainage problems. Gingko watch his podcast with you 3 muscateers.
Ginko ??? Going to.
Awful nice of Billy to compliment this channel in a very genuine way 😉
I grew up on a subsistence style farm and we never purchased food. Mom had an arrangement to pick up from a bakery one day per month. Didn't pick up more than once a month because it cost too much for gas to get there at 24.9 cents per gallon so the trip was combined with other errands.
Most of it went to the pigs, then all the birds. There was so much of it that each month mom would dry out some of it (after separating sweets from bread) and dry it out for " emergency feed". In case there was a lower quantity one month from our different feed sources.
One winter we did have a storm come through that had us snowed in for weeks just before our usual monthly shopping. While we had hundreds of jars of canned food and still had plenty of meat in the freezer. We did start mixing that dried bread suet and sunflower for the birds to stretch it out just in case. Also we were cooking up old squash and carrots and mixing it in with that for the pigs as well as cooking up liver and kidneys (the less popular meats in the freezer) and mixing in that dried bread to soak up the liquid to feed to the guard dogs. The pigs and dogs loved getting warm meals during that cold.
At one point when we were starting to wonder if we were ever going to melt out and flour was down to under 50 pounds (large family and baked own bread etc) mom decided to make us bread crumb pancakes substituting 100% of flour with breadcrumbs. We loved it. Probably for the novelty rather than the flavor.
Free is always good.
You guys are the best
Not my normal Friday, casual evening listening to my guys. I'm exhausted! Great info from Billy though. Lots of info!!
I watch all of your Podcast nice addition 🎉
Good morning guys ☕️ happy Friday 😎👍 currently 38° here in Philadelphia and bright sunshine… weather is changing, looking forward to spring
My husband watches this show every week and it is so entertaining that I watch it with him! We both enjoy all the new information from Billy. It’s so eye opening hearing how all of this works together. All of you guys are an inspiration to those of us who know there needs to be a change in how we go forward from where we are now. So thank you!
Vermont Composting is literally up the street from me, in Montpelier, VT. We're very lucky to have them here, providing TRUCKLOADS of amazing compost, and teaching others.
Love this topic!! This is my goal this year, stepping up my gardening game to feed my animals!
Another great episode guys! Thanks.
Thanks
Love your podcast
Thanks for listening
Billy seems like a nice enough guy, but something about his cadence and inflection makes me feel anxious like he's going to try selling me a used car at any moment. 🤔
I think part of it was the number of times that he said people won’t believe me they will think I’m lying. And the number of times he said honestly. Those tend to be keywords when someone is trying to sell us something or make us believe it’s too good to be true. I dont know if he realizes the value of his words and how they may be interpreted. I do think he’s just truly passionate as he said his acronym stands for. I don’t think he really has to refer to himself by that acronym to broaden his audience, there are plenty of homesteaders or homesteader wannabes like myself that would be very interested in what he’s trying to convey, I’ve never heard of him or seen him before. If it hadn’t been for the trust I have in the original three podcasters I likely wouldn’t have even watched the episode with seeing his backdrop. But I decided to keep an open mind and if the original three thought he was worthy of attention I was willing to listen. I am fascinated by what he had to say and I would like to see it shown in actual results. Time will tell. 🥰❤️🇨🇦🙏🏻🍁
@@leannekenyoung I said that "P" word once and disappointed my Sainted Mother, learned its actual meaning, and never repeated it, mostly because I found it tacky as "normal" curse words I let fly depending on the company I am keeping. 🤭
Ground as hard as woodpecker lips 😂😂😂😂 classic 🦘
GREAT SHOW JASON. ❤️ BILLY WAS FANTASTIC. CANT WAIT FOR HIM TO GO TO BENS. HOW FUN WILL THAT BE!!! YOU GUYS ROCK!!
❤
Great video guys. I am sure this was a good learning experience for some of your viewers who need to find ways to feed their animals and make their properties more productive. Thanks for sharing. Y'all have a Blessed day.
So much information shared here! Thanks!
Hands down you guys rocked it. Absouloutly your best episode to date. THANK YOU RESPECT TO YOU ALL
Nice to see Billy with you guys!
This is some great fun and information!
Billy spreading permaculture information and know how
Nice conversation.
We love ya Billy! Thank you for coming on today!
Al and all of you, You should prepare your pastures, hay fields, and corn fields so you can feed any animals you get this spring.
i've been telling him this for a couple years now.. just get a bag of seed corn and plant an acre or 5 with corn and soybeans.. you mix them together and pass them through a grinder that cracks the corn.. you can even get a pellet making machine for not too much and make your own pellets... but he is still at the stage where he is buying chicks and feeder pigs and i don't see him going farther with that.. one year he did hatch out some chicken but i think they were layers which is still fine.. thing is if he got into large production he is on the board of a charity that feeds local lower income families so he could donate the food to the charity and it wouldn't go to waste.. he was talking about opening a farmers market but thats just way off if ever going to happen... Al just has way too much going on behind the scenes that he doesn't talk about but people that watch know so i think he is concentrating on what makes him happy and hey... happiness is a rare thing so if you can than you do
A great podcast very interesting perhaps have a different guest every week
That was awesome having Billy on ... He has taught us a lot!
Y'all rock 🎉👍💯
ive been subscribed to all 4 of you since before you started this pod cast.
Completely fascinating
Interesting
Jason, all that old hay/straw you threw out of the old barn would have made a great test area for Billy's plan.
Yeah... You're not the only one Ben, that is unsure of what was just said. It's hard to grab the information the first time through. Just too much at once. I'm definitely a soil nerd and I was there for it for a good 20 minutes but this kind of information needs to be in small doses. I know Billy's excited, I WOULD BE TOO! but we need a little bit more back and forth, like a Q&A type feel. A little confirmation and slowness as well as intentionality with the conversation and not just all over... so that y'all could be asking the questions that we also have.
I get all the references and I watch all of the content from all of the people that he's talking about and I've also seen some of his channel, too.
I watch homesteading content like it's my job because I've been dreaming since 2019, and I'm hoping by the end of 2025 that it is my job. 😂
Maybe we should all put our questions here. Then, we could watch a follow-up video.
Jason and Ben, go ahead and get a patch ready for him and let's get some results. We don't even need to go with the soil test because, I would like to just see if it would work anywhere. Absolutely would improve any soil. You've got to reach the viewer where they are and if they don't think this application can work without a bunch of soil test beforehand, then they're just going to tune it out, like I almost did.
It did feel like an infomercial.
I watched all of it and I'll listen to it again so I can grasp it and maybe sit down and take notes but I was trying to listen to this like a podcast while I was straightening up the garage.
There could be a link to a website where he could have this all written down on a document we could download or buy for $1. Possibly some shaved down summaries on a data sheet.
All the claims in the world just boil down to actual results. The proof is in the pudding so let's get these tests going at Ben & Jason's 😊
I did have a question about getting school lunch milk, though. It's filling, but it's been ultra-pasteurized. It's absolutely still better than going into the landfill, but my only question is that it's not going to harm animals even if it has started to curdle a little?
I used to run my farm very similar. I'd go to our family owned dairy distributor on a Friday and fill the day F150 with all their damaged goods and milks, cream and yogurts etc. for the pigs and go to the bakery and get all their left overs. The grocery stores stopped giving the produce items away because of law suits from idiots. I had a huge old working freezer and stored milk as the Dairy often from milks and cream on its last day. Customers always said our pork was amazing!
As for feeding cakes... We rescue 2 huge pigs back in 2013, they were close to 800lbs and could barely walk. It was suggested to use to feed them bagels and donuts and milk to help loose weight. I was shocked lol. It worked!
It winch, not wench 😂
Hahaha!
I don’t remember the fan/wind noise happening before 💨 good show though 👍
One of them heard it too. Cause the feed back stopped.
Probably turned a 🎤down. 👍
so i watched your entire video .. rather long.. before I am now commenting about what I came here for. You guys all run channels its a very big part of everything.. I understand that .. most people really really just don't. you guys do really well at it.. you put out a good product and thats what it is.. its not a documentary of your entire lives its what you choose to post and there are considerations about that... What I wanted to share was that I watch your work but I also watch a lot of other channels.. Some i subscribe to and watch everything they post and others i just watch a video here and there.. but in the past I would day 6 to 9 months there have been some changes in the creator community. I watch a small group but also a variety of content that is similar.. not all just homesteading or farming or construction but all of that.. Like Derik on Vice Grip(who i am on the verge of not watching) and Matt on Diesel Creek (who i've stopped watching[building a museum of junk equipment]) Heath on Red Poppy Ranch (who i've stopped watching [farming deer?]), Andrew Camarata (who is in his own little world now), Hank on hamelton farm (who is in that transition period of whats going on there) ............. These are all good guys just like the guys in this video.. all good guys.. Its enjoyable to watch some of your content.. but I am looking at like (no offense) Al's channel and if I went through the last literally 49 videos its been about building the pole building barn. ... now I fully understand you are building a barn and it takes time.. lots of time if its mostly only the two of you.. 49 videos of nothing but listening to reeeeeee driving screws for a half hour... I love you man.. i love your wife and your family... 49 videos in a row of reeeee.... Nothing about anything else in your life.. just locked in that barn watching you make crazy elevator feeders ... what is that even about... whaaat even... heh ... but you know i didn't sign up for diesel creek to watch him gather up every piece of broken equipment to build a rust museum i signed up because of him and his wife and their crazy relationship and the love between them... I didn't sign up to watch Derick on VGG gather up every box nose 1987 pickup truck in the country to build his own junkyard and then never actually complete a project again like he did in the beginning when he actually painted cars and they looked pretty and he wasn't selling rub on clear coat patina protector ... rust is what it is.. garbage.. just dangerous to get in an accident with let alone drive on a public road... I signed up for VGG again because Derick is a cool guy and his wife is cool .. not to watch him do donuts in beaters until he burns the tires off the rim... and the fact is I am not alone.. I am not the only person that sees this.. I mean I don't want to get into what I do.. I have kinda been in this business since the late 90's developing content.. pushing it out there .. generating views that are monetized and having an income from it.. adblockers are killing me for the past couple years but whats knew and who doesn't know that but.. i have had this struggle that is similar.. i don't produce video content but i do produce content and I help others produce it too and I understand its not always what you want that is best ... BUT I just wanted to say that whether you are working at a walmart or online or a content producer ... the customer is always right.. and the examples that I used above are only to show that transitions are happening .. and some are good and some are bad and some generate income at the expense of other things. but if you are in it for the long run you need to have that take 3 steps back perspective .. that detached perspective .. and it is very very difficult to have .. and you can't often get it from your followers or the people around you.. but right now I am struggling with a group of female developers that have been for all good reason abandoned by their management company.. they are doing really well right now because the system is in place for them to do well but their contracts are going to run out.. now you guys and these others don't have contracts you are your own employer.. but these girls once management steps away from them are going to be dramatically surprised that they have been running down a dark hallway and there is no door at the end.. like I said everyone mentioned I care about but people make their own choices and that is life. I am just saying... remember to take those three steps back and look at what you're making and make sure the walls are plumb and everything is actually as you want it to be. because no one is going to tell you its not.. they're going to clap no matter what you do. anyway
Chicken feed is SO EXPENSIVE, and I get mine from a great organic farmer who sells it at a great price!
Mr PIMP (permaculture is my passion) in the house, with the three homesteading Musketeers!! :)
❤❤❤
I love your podcast, this was not my favorite episode. If your going to have guest, I would live to see your wives or kids jumping into the conversation.
Have a great weekend.
❤❤❤
*Love
thats what i say have a wives talk night hugsssss this guy talks too much lol
Had not listened to much of Billy before, the little I did wasn’t appealing for whatever reason, but this podcast totally changed my perspective. The knowledge and practices he described here will be a game changer for my small operation. Thanks for this episode!
Sorta miss the original three, new guy dominated the podcast
As a guest, I imagine that would be more the focus, to get information from the guest. I bet down the road we'll have plenty of weeks with just the guys. 😊. Having a guest occasionally could be really good for the podcast.
Miss my boys talking. I wanted Al to talk about the new smoker and hear what Ben and Jason had to say. ❤
He’s smart, but he loves the sound of his own voice. I can’t watch his channel for the same reason. It not what he says, it’s that he says it 15 times.
He is a guest and they want his input.
One of Billy's arrogant rants about people using his butchering method (which he learned from someone else) without giving him the credit a while back just turned us off so much that we unsubscribed to his channel. We are giving him another chance and acknowledging that he's a guest. It's not all bad; taking the best and leaving the rest. Just hope he doesn't come on too often. His alpha personality is just a distraction to his wealth of knowledge, unfortunately. Sorry for being blunt here! 😢😅😢
Q: What is a "carbon layer"? Make it simple for us non-homesteaders. Yeah, I grew up on a registered Jersey farm and we had PLENTY of "fertilizer" so our soil was quite rich. But, I'm intrigued with the notion of "carbon layer."
I think he’s referring to the brown items you’d layer in compost, like leaves, wood chips etc. I’m not an expert on compost, but people usually refer to the brown items as carbon, and the green items as nitrogen.
He kinda took over😬🤗
Id like to see you, Billy, go to Al's area and see if this plan can be utilized there. He needs to be included in this kind of exercise.
I use goats because of my terrain. I am trying to figure out how to reduce my need of hay for my goats during winter (in east KY). One thing I did was plant bamboo. But it takes 5-7 years to establish a stand and it's expensive to obtain the plants. I plant 4 last year, 2 different species. One did well, may have lost the other. If anyone has any other suggestions, I'm willing to hear it!
Hi guys!,😊😊😊😊😊
Great podcast! Looks like people don’t understand the concept of having a guest on a podcast
Bills mic started reverb now, & it's hard to concentrate on a subject I'm really interested in. Bummer.
I’ve heard the term ‘nature is modest’. She doesn’t like to be uncovered.
Wouldn’t hurt to ask vendors at the farmer’s market what they do with any spoiled produce at the end of the day.
offcuts and kitchen scraps and growing some food is a massive deal then maybe source stuff from local businesses and farms to add to the feed
WOW! As a Christian lady I must say when I saw the background behind the guest I was skeptical I was going to listen but I tried to keep an open mind and knew if Jason, Ben and Al approved of him then it was likely okay to listen to. As someone who still lives in the city but dreams of having a piece of land one day I consider this time in my life as research gathering and this podcast was AWESOME!! I couldn’t believe when Jason had said it had been an hour and a half already!! I found it very interesting and I hope that Jason and Ben take him up on his offer to visit and to do test plots, it certainly would be interesting to have two side by side comparisons one doing the cover with hay and basically do not a whole lot else compared to adding the compost extract, I’m assuming the compost extract differs from compost tea because it has more solids in it and is created immediately vs having to steep it for any length of time? I really would be interested in viewing the soil from a magnification lens and seeing what is under the microscope at the end of it all.❤️🥰🍁🙏🏻🇨🇦
Billy and his family are good people!! Very passionate in all he does
P.I.M.P. is an acronym. It's stands for permaculture is my passion. He tells a story on how it came to be and that it's definitely not meant to offend anyone. He truly is passionate about it and the results that come from it @permapasturefarm
@@plumberman-hi5sx yes I did continue to watch and I heard what it had stood for however just wanted to let him know that it could turn a lot of people off before they hear his message if they aren’t open minded folks like myself. 🥰
We used late day krispy crème donuts as bait to trap our hogs. Meat was delicious.
I have a great question for you guys. What would you do if you had $50,000 each to spend on your farm? How far would that go? You’re all at different stages on your homestead. Will give us an idea of what everything costs.
I ant one of those guys but I’d for sure be willing to find out what all I could do on my little two acres ❤😊
Its ok nothing isn't going to be ok anyway.!
In TX you can go to your local recycling place and they have wood chips for free. Is it possible there is a recycling place in Jason's area to get this?
At around 27.5 someone’s 🎤
Started getting fed-back….
Use an anderson powerpole connector for the winch that's pretty universal and really easy it will let you just unplug it when you don't need it
Delaware chickens would be perfect for this program
👍
Billy, you are one P.I.M.P we ladies love! God bless you, and great to see you here today. Lots of good info!
Sounded interesting, it would be nice to actually see what he's talking about.
My fav podcast. Thanks for bringing Billy on this was a real treat. The wheels in my brain are already spinning and plotting how to make this work. with my back yard chickens. You guys are a wealth of knowledge for this old grandma. Keep it up guys.
A treat?
Tks for another great video, love ya.
Totally lost my train of thought when it occurred to me chipotle might make spicy pig meats…😂
Al do you still do the coffee grinds any more now that you make your own coffee ??? hugssssss
Hey Ben we do AGH and found when we bed them in Hay and feed them in a small pen, they will tear it up. We found out due to being in Maine and when there is 3 feet of snow you aren't having them out in the paddock or woods much
I love Billy, his energy, intellect, humor and curiousity. Thanks. You all are always inspiring, and as he says, soothing.
Sounds like one of y’all turned a fan on….
For steel pipe, check with heavy equipment junk yards. You will find something.
I would highly recommend Buckeyes for the composting system. They are fantastic foragers, and will even hunt mice. They're dual purpose, big bodied birds that are very active. Great, interesting topic!
Is there a hatchery that sells these? Never heard of this breed...
I'm in the West, so I believe they came from a hatchery in Arizona. However, the breed was originated in Ohio, so there should be Midwest hatcheries that have them.
@@albanymountainhomestead
I’ve never heard of it either.
We get chicks from same hatchery as #Ben and #Meg do. MurryMcMurry, I think I spelled that wrong.
Never saw them. But fixing to find out.
My hubby is building a chicken coop for the front of our property. We have set up on the acre out back, but we can’t see them and chick hungry critters see and smell them very 😮Good!
👍
