    For anyone in the British Isles, why not consider raising the forces/battles of your local area? Websites like the BCW Project can help with the research. An obvious future project could be a demo game in the locality, which would be bound stimulate the interest of the locals themselves.

      Yes you are right. My force is based on the Eastern association which was an army that was raised in the area I live. And I love The BCW website as its been really helpful when I've been doing research which is why I mentioned it in my useful material and put its linke below. 😁👍

    To go entirely in the opposite direct from army level games you might look into modifying the samurai game "Test of Honour". This is a skirmish game that basically covers the same tech level as ECW, swords, pikes, muskets, etc. It would be useful for scenarios involving ambushing supply trains, foraging parties fighting over supplies, and raids.

    Thought this was a really good intro to the ECW and pike & shot period more broadly! If you're interested in other rules for the period, I'd also throw Baroque by Dadi & Piombo (all big bases ala Kings of War, which I quite like) and Liber Militum: Tercios (though I'm not familiar with its mechanics, personally). Even the minimalist lightweight pike and shot rules found in Neil Thomas' One-Hour Wargames book as a super simple starting point.
    Keep up the content! Always excited to see others doing pike and shot era gaming!

      Hah sorry mate. I would have been happy to do it as a history video but there's always room for scepticism in those sorts of videos. I am a great lover of the period and love to game it. so thought I would try and tie it in with the hobby as a lot of people find it hard to grasp the ways the conflicts were fought. Hopefully though like you say people can find interest and entertainment in it even if their not in to the hobby. And even better if their not then maybe its something that might appeal to them and make them want to start. 😁👍

    Hi Miller, nice one. Really enjoy this one. Still not find the answer, about playing more than one company from one regiment in a battalia. Anyway thank you for this guideline.

    • @MillersMiniatures
      @MillersMiniatures  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks mate. So like I was saying the a regiment is made up of those 3 units (2 musket and 1 pike block) depending how you want to do it with a game you can either play it as they are 3 separate units in a regiment so I'd you had 2 regiments in a battalia that would mean 6 units. Or some people play the game that they are 1 complete unit so they move fight and shoot as unit which would mean 2 regiments in a battalia would mean you had only 2 units. It can work well that way but if you do the 40 man regiments they can take up a lot of room for a single unit.
      Hope that helps a bit.😁👍

    • @tabletopgeneralsde310
      @tabletopgeneralsde310 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MillersMiniatures well no really. Take for example Hoptons Regiment, has 10 comanies. My point is playing 3 of these companies as 3 Pike blocks with musket wings as one battalia with one uniform colour, more or less.
      Or taking the Ironside from Cromwell and playing it as a horse battalia with 3 units of horse one maybe large..
      So instead of a named regiment is part of a battalia, the named regiment is the battalia.
      Hope you understand me.

    • @MillersMiniatures
      @MillersMiniatures  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tabletopgeneralsde310 right so you are more than welcome to do it that way. But multiple companies would make up a single pike block. And then other companies would make up both musket wings. There's a couple of exception where they would have been large regiments that might have been split in to a couple of like blocks but that would have been very rare and it was hard to find a regiment at full strength during the war.
      You can play it with a single regiment as a battalia as I have done that before but only as a small battlia so 2 wings of muskets 1 pike and just for an extra couple of units have a cannonn and maybe some horse.

    • @MillersMiniatures
      @MillersMiniatures  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tabletopgeneralsde310 and as for cavalry your right that cromwell has a large cavalry unit but it still would have been in 1 large unit of 12 troops of horse rather than lots of units.

    Thankyou for making this video mate. Subbed. Any tips for basing numbers?

    • @MillersMiniatures
      @MillersMiniatures  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers for the sub mate. Yer depends how you want to do it I've seen people do 2 bases of 8 for the pikement and 2 bases of 6 for each of the muskets wings so you then have 4 bases of 6 figures to make 2 units I did 4 to a base but then use movement trays. It's entirely up to you. But I normally stick to 16 man blocks for a standard unit of pike and 12 man musket wings. And cavalry regiments i do 12 man standard but again its entirely up to you. I guess it all depends on what rules you plan to us. Mine normally is pike and shot and they work on frontages for the units so you can put as many figuers as fits the space. So once you know what your system is it up to you. 😁👍

I am, however, unsure on how to base them to eventually use them for different rule sets in the future. My go-to option would be to base them seperatly and use movement trays. Do you have any recommendations for base size and where to get the similar trays to yours? Thank you in advance and keep up the great work. Really enjoying your videos!

    • @MillersMiniatures
      @MillersMiniatures  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello mate. Really glad you like it. Basing is entirely down to the modelers choice. But in some cases like you say you might want to change the rule set you want to use. So for that i would just have a look at warbases and see of thsres anythin on there that might suit you. Also doodle tech here some really good movement tray and it was them who I had design and make the movement trays I use for my ECW stuff. Hopefully this can help you. 😁👍

    A lot of TH-camrs have a remarkable "talent" for taking a long time to not explain things very clearly. Thank goodness you're not one of them. This video was exceptional and I'm probably going to spend way too much time this afternoon watching more of your videos.
    There are a couple of things I would add to the information presented here, if I may be so bold --
    First, the word Battalia sounds a lot like "battalion" so that could be confusing to someone with a cursory knowledge of things military. In this period a battalia was more akin to what we know as a Brigade.
    Secondly, "uniforms" of the ECW often consisted of whatever clothing the individual soldier had to wear - though there were exceptions. So unless a person wanted to do a bit of research to replicate a particular regiment, it's entirely appropriate to have all or most of your units made up of randomly clothed rank and file wearing whatever they would have worn to their "civilian" jobs. (On the other hand, making them "random" is a challenge all to itself, and it's much easier to paint all the coats the same color, all the stockings the same color, etc. I know from bitter experience whereof I speak regarding this matter.)
    Again, wow, what an incredibly useful video, and thanks for supplying all those links!

    • @MillersMiniatures
      @MillersMiniatures  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thankyou mate I really appreciate this comment.

      Cheers mate. Im glad you enjoyed it. Hopefully we'll be getting another one in at some point soon. As for the basing there's nothing wrong ith having 8bman wings. I've got 2 regiments with that and for the rule set that we play it still falls under a regular sized unit. How for visuals it does look pretty good having them that way. Honestly if I was to redo the army again I would have the musket wings 3 men deep as they would have been more like blocks than line formations. I havent heard of them rules but i will definitely check them out thankyou. 😁👍

    Great video Miller. You obviously enjoy the period and it comes over in this film.
    So what is the difference in the game of 'To Kill a King' between Dragoons, musketeers, forlorn hope and commanded shot.

    • @MillersMiniatures
      @MillersMiniatures  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers Leslie it's is a period I am very fond of and will be a project that fo me will never end.
      As for the differences in those units the dragoons are a mounted unit can ride up and dismount and if used correctly (and if the dice gods will it) can be used to some effect at moving up and holding a position and moving out quickly if needed.
      Where as the musketeers and commanded shot both essential the same thing. However the commanded shotte get a better moral and shooting value. But they would be used independently to the pike block. You can obviously play musketeers independently but if you want to try keep the the tactics then its not somethin they would do. Commanded shotte also can have fire locks.
      The forlorn hope are just another way of saying the Storming Party. You can use the fire lock figure or some of the other figures as they have mixed weapons but they can also take other things like Grenades and petards.
      Hopefully that helps a little.

    I would like to do ECW in 15mm using Blue Moon figures. What base widths would you recommend? Loving your 28mm tho!!

    • @MillersMiniatures
      @MillersMiniatures  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That sounds good to me. I like the blue moon figures. As for base sizes I guess it would all depend how large a frontage you would need for a game and how many figures you would want to have on inna regiment. I have done a unit of 15mm steel fist minitures but they come up smaller than the blue moon figures and I used a 100mm base for the pikes and 60mm baes for each of the muskets blocks.

    Hi sir, quick question. I’ve been trying to do some research on the uniforms of Montrose’s Irish regiments. Any idea which color scheme their coats might have been? I found one picture of a brown jacket but it was one musketeer. Thanks!

    • @MillersMiniatures
      @MillersMiniatures  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Alright mate. The Irish were mostly drummed up from among the of the small towns and villages, and they wouldn't have really had a uniform. Their would have had a mix of cloths of the common people mixed in with some tartans and different cloaks of blankets as either their personal affects means of protection. They didn't even really have the supplies of weapons and mostly looted any muskets they would have carried. A very difficult faction to research I'm afraid.

    Hi Miller, I’m considering dipping my toe into ECW. What sets of rules are there for me to choose from. Anything that’s a skirmish size so I can try as I paint ?? I got into napoleonic’s by playing sharp practice

    • @MillersMiniatures
      @MillersMiniatures  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello mate. I'm glad to here you thinking of having a go. Unfortunately there isn't much in the way of skirmish rules as the period is mostly fought with large pike blocks and wings of muskets. However there's is always pikemens lament which does appere to be on the smaller scale that pike and shotte or for king and parliament. i did hear a little while ago that the too fat lardys did do a sharp practice set of rules for the ECW period but I yet to find it. 😁👍

    • @MillersMiniatures

      @@andyshaw5378 no not at all. People play loads of different rules like
      for king and parliament,
      the kingdom is our,
      victory without quarter
      All are good rule sets. Only I choose to use pike and shotte as I enjoy the rules and they are easy to grasp as thier along the same lines as black powder and hail ceaser.

      @@MillersMiniatures It's TH-cam comments, so I hope it is clear that this is just my opinion. No offense intended. But what I do not like in large scale figures is that there end up being 4 figures on a base representing scores or hundreds of men and at odds with ground scale.
      The painting and detail are better in large scale (which you show nicely), but the abstraction to battle-sized units is a stretch.
      I prefer the tiny, slightly blobby 10 mm (or even 6mm) for big battles.
