Unless they simply don't need the additional storage space, they should have gone to the OUTSIDE of the containers instead of the inside with the arches of the Quonset roof. That would do TWO major things. 1. Provides additional storage on top of the containers. 2. Puts rain runoff further to the outside and makes for less possibility of rain incursion / puddling on the top of the containers.

Its a trade off but yes, unless I absolutely had to have the floor space, I think I would have put the containers on the inside as well.
Exactly. That's what i would do, go to the outside and raise it a little bit to use the additional storage space like water tanks, fire wood or generators.
Also in high snow load It could keep the container from collapsing.
Yes the container is structurally strong enough when new. However when it gets old and rusty from all the water and snow sitting up there then the structural strength is compromised.

I thought about doing the same thing but I was gonna bring the roof out to the outside of the containers. That would minimize the rain pooling up on top of the containers and give me a lot more dry storage.
How much would this building cost to complete?

Yup that’s what I did with mine, made a big difference. I included mine to the top of containers all the way across. I have two 14x14’ roll up doors on the front. Overhang really helps.

I made up a cradle and added a 30'x40'x16' building like this on the end of my 24'x24' garage for more storage very nice ordered it off Ebay came from Canada

I like your idea but for sunny hot Florida I would move the containers 20ft closer so the arch would cover the containers and I would seal off the back with a 3rd 40' container with another 10' of arches to cover the 3rd container. For desert you could make the center/back container a water cistern tank.

My experience on some that i built that were similar is that rain and snow blows sideways, so you need to cover anything you dont want to get wet. Sun shade👍

We build the shipping container apartment.
Crown Steel sells quality stuff and all the stuff you need comes with it. Had about 500 extra nuts and bolts. Built mine three years ago.

People need to understand more about the containers themselves.. they are made with Cor-Ten steel.. they are designed to last quite some time while being exposed to Salt water spray and rough handling.. where they rust out tends to be where they have existing damage or have been poorly repaired.. this is why you need to pay for the best possible container up front.. in this case, they are grinding through the corrosion protection in order to weld to them.. this is not optimum, but they are mitigating the risk by treating the exposed raw steel. I have seen shipping containers that looked almost new after 30 years of rainwater exposure and constant use inland from the shore..

I hope you put seals between all pieces, they didn't offer it until after we bought ours. Leaked in so many spots, ended up having tons of issues with company we used including pieces n bolts.

Could you build this "cheaper" by using two containers on top of each other and then just straight beams across the gap? Presumably that requires much more material to be stiff enough and that increases weight requiring again more material. Or use of girders. I guess those curved roof panels are a smart thing to use.
I'd also be curious about yellowing of the fiberglass. But since you always have a "mold" you could always make new ones haha.

Shipping Containers are just their side show.
I like it. But.... have you calculated the spreading effect of the weight of that corrugated arch? How about with a snow load? Shipping container aren't very heavy compared to their bulk. It only takes a thousand lb or so to scoot them on smooth concrete. I strongly suggest bolting them to the slab.

But you get wind in Texas too. Bolt it down anyway. You can run but you can't hide from thinking projects thorough where failure hazards human life.
Idk what part of TX they’re in but I’m thinking from the looks of the trees, they’re probably north so away from the windstorm zones, but any wind is going to give that thing a helluva lift. Id be far more concerned about that than scooting containers apart. That roof should load pretty vertical to transfer weight straight down the wall to the foundation. I would have wet set some bigass tie downs in the concrete to tie into the twist locks run up the corners of the containers to try n keep the whole thing from taking off like a bigass parachute. But I’m guessing the manufacturer has some kind of engineering guidance for customers.

Are the bolts then tightened up after the fact?
Are those golf tees? How many dB do they reduce the noise?
Won't water run off from that roof run into the shop? If you seal it at the base of the arch it will pool there since the shipping container roof has a slight arch to direct run off from the middle to both sides.
Always wondering what folks with these do about standing water on the containers. Sure, they are "weather tight" but corrosion will always happen eventually. Might be less of an issue in some places but here in the PNW the rain and moss will come.
Is there any debate to whether the arch goes to the inside edge of the container or the outer edge? Sure would give you some interior horizontal storage and solve the water issue, at the expense of some floor space.
The water issue is a big problem. I will show how to deal with it in an upcoming video, but you are correct. As for the placement of the containers, it's totally up to you. Either configuration will work!

Does the roof use weather sealent for each panel also what about every nut and bolt is there some type of sealant that has to be applied or gas getting under every Bolt

NICE ! Any plans for a mezzanine or maybe some of those big multi level pallet racks to use the height in middle for storage ? Will the containers get an EPDM sheet covering the flat roof, or some other covering to shed water so you don't create a mosquito filled shop facility ? Looking forward to more on this build !

How do you secure an entire metal building against possible lightning hitting it? Will reg lightning rods even be of any use with so much area to cover?

Spray anti-spatter is easier to use than dip in my opinion
Welding that roof to the containers may well create a taxable building for property tax purposes. It might have been better to just build the shed roof and put the containers under it since the containers wouldn't be taxable.

Any snow load will push those containers right off the concrete
Spray on cooking oil works as nozzle gel and it helps keeps spatter from sticking. Way cheaper than nozzle gel.
WD 40 works well also. Always sprayed on the gun when running flux core. Kept nozzle and gun clean.

Reminds me of the time I put together a metal shed for my landlord. All those nuts and bolts made me swear that I'd never do another one. I'll pay someone else or I'm going to build with wood.

Hey Justin, it's great that you're using a respirator but you've got the wrong cartridges loaded into it. The pink disks are only for particulates. You need the bigger plastic ones for all the fumes from welding gallium (galvanized)
Be careful with it! Drops it on concrete. Perfect!

I am so grateful for this video. I am just starting this exact project with the "minor" difference that I am stacking two containers on each end, so my roof will start out at 18'. The total shop hight will be 35'. Also my roof will be going to the outside edge of the container. I'll sent pctures when I'm finished.

I don't know where this is. But imagining a snow load of 4 or so feet, and opening all four doors of one (or both) containers, would flatten everything.
The doors are the gussets to the whole thing.
Texas..... 1 inch of snow every 20 years.
