The Odd Couple theme song film soundtrack original music score

  • The original soundtrack album for The Odd Couple (which can be heard elsewhere on TH-cam) is noticeably different from the recordings used in the 1968 film, so I've assembled all of the music that you actually hear in the film. I've eliminated any dialog, although you can hear sound effects in a few places. It adds up to only 12 minutes of music, and yet composer Neal Hefti (who also wrote the Batman theme) gives us about 6 distinctly different arrangements of the title theme. At the end, I've tagged on a version from The Odd Couple II (1998). In addition to the iconic theme, a version of the cue beginning at 10:11 is heard in every episode of the 70s TV series.

I love how they make the 'Odd Couple' theme gently swing and the strings add a subtle lushness, which gives it an atmosphere and character that captures both the era and the location. It will stay with me until I expire.

Mike Nichols recalled in an interview that no laugh was expected from those lines during rehearsal. In fact, the audience laugh was so big that Matthau would have to read the newspaper while waiting for the laugh to die down.

Most people don't know that the title theme had lyrics:
    No matter where they go
They are known as the couple.
    They're never seen alone
So they're known as the couple.
    As I've indicated
    They are never quite separated,
They are peas in a pod.
Don't you think that it's odd.
    Their habits, I confess
None can guess with the couple.
If one says no it's yes
more or less, with the couple.
    But they're laugh provoking;
Yet they really don't know they're joking.
    Don't you find
    When love is blind
    It's kind of odd.
By Sammy Cain and Neal Hefti.

Just a bit of trivia: One of the exotic dancers (The blonde in the purple outfit) was Angelique Pettyjohn who played "Shahna" in the Star Trek: The Original Series episode "The Gamesters of Triskelion"
As of 2022, there are 2 surviving cast members from the movie version: Monica Evans (Cecily Pigeon) and David Sheiner ("Roy" one of Oscar's poker buddies)

This so reminds me of my childhood being born and raised in the heart of Manhattan. This movie came out when I was 5. My grandfather would take me for long strolls throughout the city and to play at Central Park or roller skating at the Rockefeller Center. I recall my grandparents going out to see this movie. Brings back great memories. Thank you for taking the time to put this great original score together. Excellent editing work.

I recently read somewhere that Dick Van Dyke was considered for the role of Felix Ungar in THE ODD COUPLE (1968). If DVD had been Felix, it would have been a far different and less memorable motion picture. But, no matter who played F.U. in the movie, Tony Randall will ALWAYS be Felix Unger (with an "E") to me. Had he still been alive to this day, Tony would be over 100 years old!

I love to put my Kramer Baretta or Les Paul standard on clean chorus setting and play along with this theme song, have probably practiced it 30 or 40 times this weekend. It’s hard to get all the different tones considering the wide variety of instruments and imitating on a guitar, but it’s fun trying, this is an excellent song to learn some good chops 👍🏻🎸

I actually didn't realize how different the film & vinyl versions of the soundtrack were. Both make fine listens, though!

I'm watching The Odd Couple on Blu-ray right now and even though I've seen it umpteen times over the years, I've only just noticed the production date in the opening titles is wrong. It says MCMXLVII (1947)
Someone at Paramount got their Roman numerals mixed up!

That's amazing you caught that. Interesting. So they put the X in front of the L instead of after it, making it 1947 instead of 1967.

Someone help me out. Back in the early 2000s, there was a commercial for ING I believe that had this soundtrack playing in the background. I thought it played during a super bowl and had like dollar bills physically moving around. Can anyone find this ad for me because I’ve looked for the past few years and can’t find it.

    We're all out of Cornflakes F. U.
CLASSIC stuff, took me longer than 3 hours mind you to get the punch line a that joke LOL, Actually about 15 years as I'm sure I was about 10 when I first saw this film.
Just full of wee funny bits that only when ye get to a certain age ye appreciate the significance of it even back in the 60's, and I thought certain cliches were relatively modern but apparently they weren't.
Even being a Glaswegian this is different humor to ours but even some of our jokes crosses the boundaries and are very similar to what's in here.
Brilliant stuff and the soundtrack is the ballocks.
