All the 60s/70s tv shows had great theme tunes, you had the Saint, the Avengers, the Baron, Danger man, Man in a suit case, and Randall & Hopkirk, finally the Champions all good viewing at the time.

I was a kid in the 90s and the original avengers were shown on TV during the late nights houts. I would stay awake, just to see the show. I was obsessed with Diana Rigg and Patrick Macnee .

While I thoroughly enjoyed the video put together here, the wonderful theme (RIP Mr Johnson) and the mix of the two different shows, it struck me like a punch to the face, just how Bloody Good the Cinematographers were, back in the 1960s.
Comparing the original show scenes against the modern, multi-million-dollar film...and the original, low-budget 1960s TV show shot in a studio...looks a Thousand times better.
Just Look at how the actors are lit....every shot, screams Glamour...everything looks so rich, so colourful...every scene lit so we can see everything, unlike today when most of the time, I have no idea what's going on because the screen is so dark!
Remember too...there was No Colour TV transmissions when The Avengers was made!
We only saw the show in glorious Black & White!
Thank God the producers thought about the future, shooting on expensive colour film.
I feel a little sad when I think about the Broadcast scene in the UK these days....compared to the 60s, when every studio was humming with activity, full of the best technicians, photographers and crews, all busy producing magic on a daily basis.
Simple question...why, with all our technology...can't we shoot images that look half as good as something shot in the 1960s??!

I love the series. I enjoyed the film adaptation for two reasons:
.1 The threat that Sir August DeWinter posed to the world was shown in great detail. He believed that he was wielding the power of God.
Sir August DeWinter-“A who Carrie’s an umbrella is a man praying for rain.”
John Steed-“And a man without one is a fool. Never trust the weather, Sir August.”
Sir August DeWinter-“Rain or shine, always mine!”
The trend of showing the threat was used again in the film The Wild, Wild West. Television shows had lower budgets(most of the money was spent on travel and set construction) and showing the danger of the threat was left to the reactions of the actors and the imagination of viewers.
    2. The musical score of Joel McNeeley. It not only captured the tone of the film but enhanced it. It was an aurally colored palette of sound.
And, worthy of note, Patrick MacNee’s voice and slight appearance as Colonel Invisible Jones.
I remember reading about the many times that Sean Connery turned down his participation in the film because he swore off acting in spy films. If he was cast as John Steed and Ralph Feinnes was cast as Sor August DeWinter, it might have been interesting for Sean to do more bantering with Uma Thurman. It might have been sarcastic and, perhaps, a little sexist. But Sean Connery took the role of Sir August DeWinter. I think he was a bit uncomfortable at times, but he was a professional and he couldn’t show it.
Uma Thurman as Emma Peele was different. She was very capable and she was very tough. The red hair was a nice touch. Her character showed intelligence, beauty, confidence and courage.
I understand why most people didn’t like the film; because it was not “The Avengers that I know and love.”
Fair point. It was different than the television show and it was more violent.
These adaptations are not always successful. But out of curiosity, they are worth a look.
