One-Hour Skirmish: Nantes Crossroads

  • A detachment of French REvolutionary Guards has been dispatched to seize an important crossroad just outside the city of Nantes. The local forces have been pushed back by Royalist farmers and country gentlemen, and only the high walls of Nantes can save the army from complete collapse, but the scattered Vendeeans are converging on the crossroads as well.
    NOTE: A commenter helpfully provided one important clue as to why these games go so quickly - figures who move a second and third time on one card have to pay three and five actions respectively. That means taking three consecutive moves on one card costs a single figure NINE actions, rather than three. We'll get it right next time.
    It's another fine One-Hour Skirmish played out using John Lambshead's card-driven wargame rules.

    I really enjoyed this - especially your approach to generating terrain. I think persisting with these campaigns has also meant that the games are getting better. The explanations of your rationale for house rules are good food for thought.

      The more i see new bought rules played, the more I am in favor of coming up with a hybrid set of house rules. For example, the troops with leaders should all be allowed to charge, move or fire on command. The activation thing might be ok with leaderless rabbles, but it really messes royally with the whole principle of command.

      I’ve pretty much enjoyed every interpretation so far, the only quibbles I have are when I read the rules myself and apply them to the models I bought... I need to play some, moving house this Friday, gonna be in the painting dungeon a LONG time but after that I’m gonna apply a lot of the lessons. I think this rules set could be given a tiny bit more variety in the close combat stakes, whereas from my perspective a low motivation leader might not declare his orders so clipped amidst the smell of gunpowder and pine needles. I think your observation isn’t worth any less though, because as like as not you’re looking at it from the perspective of scale or something I missed. I heard of a rule in a set called ‘Hour of glory’ where if your unit has this quality and are stuck somehow with no actions, they can enact one once per game. Maybe that’s how we should couch our observations, in terms of suggesting something to try. I only recall that one because many of the rules ideas I currently have bubbling under the surface aren’t nearly as balanced or saintly as that one.

      @@jamesl3214 Good points, all. But, as it is right now, the leader is left with half the figures in his immediate command just standing around doing absolutely nothing at all. That’s more what you’d expect from a horde of tribesmen or a leaderless rabble.

    • @jamesl3214
      @jamesl3214 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dartmart9263 I can see your point, but for the sake of balance, do you think it could be expressed as adding to activation rolls if in charge range or similar? That way your leader serves more of a purpose, but he is obligated to do so from the front. The perfect rules set is like the perfect anything... you won’t always get what you’re wanting but often you end up with what you need. I love the troop types in Wargames Research Group, the simplicity and focus on the setting and objectives of N Thomas. But then I like the flexibility and detail of Dragon Rampant, Void Pirates and Frostgrave, amongst others. One thing I don’t want to do is end up just a collector... my other hobby is music and it’s so easy to be on the consumer train instead of having a pool of sound sources, or models and making it work a number of ways. I’m hovering over a Song of Armies and Hordes and Hail Caesar, but I think there concludes my research. I’ll just use the simplest, base them somewhere in the middle and adjust scales and special rules from the others.

      @@jamesl3214 Well then, “for the sake of balance” should still allow for a much larger rabble, to face the more disciplined force. But if commanders don’t exercise command, then do away with them altogether. Just use him as a hero and nothing else.

    An interesting alternate history background for the cold war period is Winter of 79, the blogs are excellent. I just need to learn how to paint camo that does not look like the work of a three year old and I will have a few games in the setting. There are rules and stuff put out by other people based on the blog. I recommend taking a look you may like it.

    “Need more horsemen”? Did the Vendeans have a lot of horsemen, or were they mostly foot?

    • @TheJoyofWargaming
      @TheJoyofWargaming  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The men of the Vendee were largely on foot. They did have a couple of cannons that they stole from the local arsenals and militias.
      I'm actually upgrading my collection to add a few Napoleonic Brits. And in that order I threw in some additional French foot and mounted units as well. It might be a while before you see those guys on the table but they are coming.

    At 8.36 how did you move that figure twice with only 2 AP left? Doesn't the AP increase with each move for the same figure? Also , how was the leader killing multiple enemies? Doesn't the rule say after a firing or melee combat that figures turn is over regardless of remaining available AP?

      Stumbled across an interview with the author the other day that confirms your point. I've just completed painting enough figures to run the cannon scenario from the book. Will try to film a game run more properly and get it up on the channel.

    We learn by doing. This was a very enjoyable and instructive engagement! Recently, I've been reading, "Johan Ewald: Jager Commander"... he was a Hessian Captain in British Service during the American Revolution. Based upon his experiences in the Seven Year's War, Am. Rev., and early Napoleonic Wars, he recommends advancing "en echlon" for greater tactical flexibility and clear fields of fire. Cavalry would add some tone to the vulgar brawls and be a valuable addition. Modern warfare is all about fire and maneuver... so watch your flanks! Thanks for sharing your efforts with us!

      You will be glad to know that last night I based up seven cavalry, my first in this era, specifically for this rule set. Not only that, but they are British figures, and I've got 13 infantry to go with them. So yeah, we're getting closer to doing this right.

In addition, Captain Ross Poldark also had encounters in that neck of the woods, as his Cornish Smugglers were expanding their operations and trying to secure their supply sources! Future characters?!!!!! Smuggling might be a good "adventure hook"! We shall see!

    Another interesting outing for 1HS. I can see the use of it, I spend a lot of time in hotel rooms and have been thinking of taking something like this with me. That said, I’m leaning towards Fistful of Lead and FFOL Bigger Battles. At least you get to roll dice! Great to hear your thoughts on the rules and I look forward to the Cold War games.

    I have watched a few of you playthroughs to see if this rule set is for me. It is. I play solo a lot and I learn more through mistakes than a smooth game so I appreciate your ability to present the playthrough as it is. I can't imagine adding the stress of recording and editing to my day. I do think you need more tiny poker chips, 13 blue and red plus some other colors to designate having fired and other stuff. It is more to fiddle with but it helps to have the visual que when juggling numbers.
