When Empires Fall: On Our Own

The Empire is no more, and when it goes all our peace and stability goes with it. Can we keep the tattered edge of civilization from fraying back into barbarism?

It may not have the glamor of the big ships of the line, but this sort of action dominates naval clashes in the age of sail.
BBIB: Scenario Design
มุมมอง 28814 วันที่ผ่านมา
There's a better way to think about movement in age of sail games. There's also a shocking lack of background material for fights between capital ships. The bulk of historical action in this genre involves a couple of small frigates or sloops cutting each other off or cutting each other out, so let's go with that. Blood, Bilge, and Iron Balls works well at any scale.

Heroes and Commanders can’t be targeted as long as they are within 6” (or in your half scale 3”) of a friendly unit.
Working on terrain while watching. Mainly planning out stuff for my 6mm armour. WWII . Great video sir. Always fun.
@@charleslatora5750 I'm so glad to be a part of your hobby time. It is an honor.
When I use jokers if one shows up whoever that card is for he gets to draw two and pick the best one for themselves
Ups... The wrong comment ended up here because YT was already a video ahead. (Delete.) But an interesting system and a good battle report.. as ever. 😉
Great report, but I think I will stick with Hordes of the Things and DBA version 1.1. Deo Gracias.
I don’t like elves…
One thing I would recommend to do is add orders so it adds another detail. An example of this would be attackers are probing and testing the strength of the defenders. The defenders are trying to drive off the attackers with as little losses as possible. Love the novel idea you are always pushing the boundaries of the hobby!
@@Maxsminiatures that's a really good suggestion. I'll give it a shot, and we'll see how it goes.
@@TheJoyofWargaming I also recommend keeping the same saved conversation as it will help the algorithm learn how to do things.
Evening
You're still selling it to me, although you and the AI? Must be what it was like watching Dylan go electric. (minus the boo's, of course.)
Why don't you look up the combat resolution for quick battles in Strongholds and Followers?
I love this idea. What is Strongholds and Followers?
@@TheJoyofWargaming Strongholds and Followers is a supplement to DnD 5e created by Matt Colville of MCDM productions. I believe their pdf of rules is up on their site. The rules are for mass combat in DND. The premise being that a sufficiently leveled party of adventurers will settle somewhere and build a stronghold that attracts military units. It is for DND but you could lift out the fast resolution system and adapt it to your campaign. It also features a "who wins and by how much?" Then take casualties.
@BowedSiren640Xbox Colville? Not interested.
@@TheJoyofWargaming well it's your loss, but if you want to give the rules a look, I can send you a copy.
Also asked it to show a summary instead of a turn by turn report. Here’s an example reply detailing one of the companies involved Infantry Company 2 Casualties: 5 bases lost (5 remaining) Morale: Moderate; morale held until the retreat order was given. Involvement: Actively engaged in forest fighting and supported the assault on the hill. Experience: Slight upgrade in experience; soldiers gained confidence in close-quarters combat. Notable Actions: One squad successfully neutralized a defensive position in the forest, enabling a brief advance and causing some disruption to the defenders.
You can ask it to tell you what the casualties represent. I ran it using the same prompt as you but told it to represent casualties as bases, with 1 base being 10 men as in Helfire.
I am starting to think Mr. Wargaming will do anything to keep from going back to his initial black powder campaign. 😂
All that smoke agitates his eye.
i know this is an oldie of yours but I just picked the rules and added the solo cards recommended at the back of the book adds some chaos when you get confused and can not move a unit
There are two reasons sailing ships did not fight at full sail; 1 - Risk of fire (from your own guns firing); ships would normally fight at All Plain Sail with the lower sail sheets furled on the lower yard arm, clear of the weather deck guns. 2 - Having a lot of sail set provides more opportunity for the enemy firing to damage your rigging. I do agree that smaller ship actions (frigates and unrated) do create interesting and more playable scenarios, historically this accounted most of the naval actions.
Table looks great!
My upcoming game, just Orcs n Hobgobs will have about 20 units of 12 figures...i must be nuts
@@charleslatora5750 That's enormous. Take your time and it'll be great.
What!?!? NO archers for the good guys?
@@dartmart9263 I just didn't have the... "points". You only get five units, and I had to choose between a hero and archers.
@ Lol
@@dartmart9263 always choose extra swords over puny arrows.
@ Modern people always underestimate effectiveness of archery
@@dartmart9263 you have it backwards. I have far too much faith in a strong man with a weapon in his hands.
BTW Macris is still right, he told us the proper number of figures on a table for a skirmish is 3-8 units of 3-8 figures. That guy seems to know a thing or two.
He's probably based his thoughts on the old US military study that found 7 to be roughly the maximum number of maneuver units a commanding office could comfortably keep track of.
Such a great, concise video. And it's not just OPR that this can apply to. Any game that isn't just IGoUGo has this sort of dilemma
My favourite skirmish rules. Looking forward to seeing how it plays out. The One Hour Wargames scenarios work well with these rules too.
Thanks for the great intro to the game. Lances only get their reroll once. Then they’re broken/useless.
@@WileyGames Ohhh, that makes perfect sense. That means it has to be that first charge attack, too. You can't charge and then save the lance for later rounds.
I should pick these rules up finally
Hi
Looking good. Can’t wait to see how it plays out.
Christian Hillcross is a name I can appreciate.
@@bobiojimbo It's our hobby. We're just nice enough to share it with everyone.
You’re really speaking my language with the videos recently! Obviously a huge fan, keep up the great work!
Hi
Great set up. Looking forward to part 2. I used these rules with my LOTR models. Gondor VS Orcs of Mordor solo. Worked very well. Gondor won but it wasn't easy.
15:16 I don’t come to the house of wargaming for the comedy but it’s a nice bonus!
As a gamer with a couple of very small armies I like this more with every episode. It may be something for me.
Mr. Smith to Mrs. Smith, "Art HISTORY" It's reputable.
Anyone here who hasn't voted yet, go out and do so! Vote like your life depends on it, cause it probably does at this point!
We are so back baby! Let's make wargaming/TTRPG great again!
The Websterverse, in the hands of Mr Wargaming, is generating a true showcase of great campaigns! I just begun running a solo “Hell in microcosm” campaign on a “Wargaming campaigns” and here “Fall of the empire” comes. Have mercy, this is too much inspiration to bear.
Note that Militia are only paid then they are called up. When called up they will be paid for a full month, even if they were demobilised half way through it. Probably page 12 🙂
@@JimWebster-p2h Got it. So are they paid every year that they get called up?
@@TheJoyofWargaming They are paid by the month, for every month they get called up. But no time less than a month 🙂 So if you keep them under arms for three months, you pay for three months
I love your maps. So simple yet beautiful! I might have to pick this game up to add to my collection.
Nice fight. Most rules I have read penalize full sails by increasing rigging damage, often doubling it.
@@crispycritter9163 That's the kind of thing I'm looking for. That option really adds to the chase games.
The funny thing for the Celia is that brigs were sloops. There were two kinds of sloops, brig sloops (two masts) and ship sloops (three masts). So if your sloop has two masts -- it's a brig!
@@btrenninger1 Is that a fact? You know how long I looked for that information? Hadda be at least five minutes. I ahoulda known to just ask my frens. Rando wargamers are more reliable fonts of education than Wikipedia.
@@TheJoyofWargaming Patrick O'Brian taught me that. In the first book Master and Commander, Jack Aubry is promoted to Master and Commander and assigned to sloop of war Sophie. Maturin is confused when everyone keeps calling it a brig and needs it explained to him.
Historically, the basis for not usually being at full sail in combat was for a number of reasons. Mostly, it was not uncommon or unheard of for fully set course sails to catch fire from friendly or enemy cannon fire- black powder is a messy flamethrower with the sand-course cannon powder commonly used. Second, the strain on sails, spars, masts, and lines at full sail can be quite dangerous once you start adding damage to lines and masts/spars. Last major issue is the extremely restrictive effects of lower sails on men attempting to fight from the tops. As for the guns being undermanned, the top men have their jobs, the gun crews had theirs. With a long range gunnery duel with no major casualties, and only one broadside firing, the gun crews would likely be working with relatively peak efficiency. Great game! Always got to see the day to day actions getting played!
@@mcmurray7355 Fascinating and educational. So would you suggest that taking fire under full sail is better modelled on the table by increasing damage when hit in that status?
@ Yes, especially when some navies seemed to almost as a matter of doctrine, attempt to target rigging, like the French. I believe it’s represented in Post Captain, and I’m sure in other rules as well
@mcmurray7355 That is an optional rule in this. Brits get better gunnery, Frogs get to target rigging.
Phillies versus Pirates? That's just an average baseball game.
Nice to see this sort of little bread and butter battle played out 🙂
I think I'm starting to get this game a bit more now, thanks for sharing. I do find myself wondering what a game of Flashing Steel would be like; set up the burning of the Phili' as its grounded verses the Barbary Pirates trying to secure it. Always fun stringing games of different themes together for that comprehensive AltHistory play.
This campaign has been the best stuff I've seen on TH-cam for ages. It kept me glued to the screen and names like General Lacky are now firmly inprinted in my brain. Thanks for recording it!
A history lesson and a war game!
Islam definitely had a hand in making the American Navy! Lol
“The broke Barbary Pirates”??? They were paid off handsomely by most of the European nations, occasionally even by the Ottomans, and they plundered the ships of the rest , selling off crew and cargo.
Also, one book to recommend is Fletcher Pratt's Preble's Boys, which covered a lot of the Barbary pirates campaign. It is in this book that has the tidbit that the officers and crew of the Philadelphia when they were POWs whiled away the time doing what -- naval war gaming.
It is pretty normal that bigger ships often sailed faster than smaller ones. Because they could carry more sail and taller masts that would get sails out of the slower sea level winds.
Great stuff! Of course Jack Aubrey wouldn’t give up the chase that easily, flying every shred of canvas to chase down the enemy. Likely the odd shot from the bow chasers would further damage and slow the Frenchman, making their capture inevitable. Historical indeed.
