Great work Wes, the game turned out great. Surprised you got a game out at all with that kind of start to the week, happy to know that you and the family are ok.
I'm sure I could have made the game more polished with more time, but at least what I managed to get out was the core experience I had planned from the start. And yeah, we're all fine. We did end up spending money to get all of the rest of our trees looked over, just in case. lol. Mild paranoia has set in.
HOLY MOLY,i know its late but thanks alot for this video, ive been strugling for the past week on how to create a combat system for my game and this video just gave me the perfect idea
Great work to you all, the game was a lot of fun! I've been playing Hades a lot recently so this came at a good time ;D Glad to hear everyone was okay from the tree!
Thanks, I'm glad the game came out as well as it did, all things considered. And yeah, I might show a picture of the tree at some point. Took a bunch for insurance purposes, just gotta pick wisely so I don't dox myself. 😅
Helper Wesley: "Norse mythology is dark." Norse mythology: _Thor tries to cross a river and gets mocked by the ferryman_ Norse mythology, like all mythologies, is...tonally diverse.
True. We ended up looking in to the moment right before loki receives his punishment for tricking hodor into killing balder. That's what the story was originally revolved around. 😅
@@HelperWesley True, true. But I had fun trying to decide what myth to reference-the time Thor put on a wedding dress and pretended to be Freya and the time Loki crashed a party and accidentally confessed to murder while trying to roast the other Aesir were both considered.
@@HelperWesley I bet a Hades-like centered around the wedding incident would be hilarious. Anyways, recommending Overly Sarcastic Productions for a quick overview of the myths in question. 7:45 - I dont know anything about game maker, but maybe is because you are using an AND (&) operator with only 1 condition, and maybe it fills the other condition as false. Something like: _IF (shield=2 & timer>1) || (shield=1 & EMPTY)_ Maybe it fills the _EMPTY_ as false, and it became _(shield=1 & FALSE)_ which is false So when you put the always true condition it became a valid condition like this: _IF (shield=2 & timer>1) || (shield=1 & TRUE)_ Hope it helps and let me know if that was the problem :)
I'm loving the your content cant wait for more. You got my sub and this inspired me to pick up Gdevelop again and finally finish my chess and mini golf games so thank you. I love this idea of a top down game like this so maybe itll be my next project.
Glad I could help. 😉 And give it a shot. 👍 I really enjoy making this type of top down game, it's simple enough to do, but it adds depth to an otherwise 2D game.
I won't be going back to this game, because it's been way too long and I'm sure the game is nothing but spaghetti code. 😅 But if I had my time back, I definitely think making the boss's hands bigger would have helped with making that fight more engaging. 🤔
Thanks! And yeah, they made a really cool game. I thought it was a pretty standard roguelite with a good story. But I dove in to it as research for this jam, and it's a HUGE game with some really cool game design choices. And you can pet Cerberus. 10/10. lol
@@HelperWesley Haha okay I will check it! I love all the options you had in your game, I played it and it doesn't feel at all like it was made in a week (-1 day for movie night lol)
@@TylerGreen I never pass up the chance to watch my toddler eating popcorn out of a bowl twice his size. Literally the cutest thing ever. lol. Hope you enjoy Hades. ;)
are u ever stopping and resetting the dash timer ??? it might have something to do with that or maybe the way the conditions are, i played the game overall it was fun b8ut i had no clue what the favors did till just now and the attacks are kind of slow it slows down the pace of the game especially with the dash.
I've looked over the code for the dash since submitting the game and I'm honestly not sure why the heck that fixed it. lol. Didn't know what the favors did? That's the first time anyone has given me that feedback. that's interesting.

I'm having trouble with my combat system on my top down dungeon crawler and I love the combat system you've done here any tips on how to work with it I can't find any good tutorials for top down melee systems 😅 I'm also working on mobile for a mobile build.
Are you using the same engine as me? GDevelop? I used "if in collision" and during a few particular frames of the attack animation of the spear for combat. And for knockback and stuff I used a system similar to what I'm using now in my gun game. The example for that gun game is open source and can be found through the engine if you search for an example called "The Conviction Of Gun Dude". There's even a mobile version with touch screen joysticks if you want to check that out. Good luck. 👍
Uuuuh, I kind of make it up as I go. 😅 The closest thing to this style of game that I know of right now is the "titan souls" example I made a LONG time ago. It's got the same top down layout and angle, but none of the upgrades and stuff. Now that I'm making tutorials on the GDevelop channel, maybe I'll make one on this sort of thing. 🤔(Though not any time soon cause there's a lot of stuff to cover before I get to this)
Great game looks really cool, do you mind if I play it on one of my streams? I cant really afford Hades at the moment but I'm sure I get the same feeling playing this game
Glad you enjoyed it! And yeah, it was for a game jam, and the general time I aim for is 15 minutes to a half hour for those. So the upgrades are pretty strong so people can beat the game within that time. 👍
It's a bit advanced, but if you've seen the expressions video, a lot of the mechanics from this game went in to that one. And that game will eventually be released as a game example.
I usually don't retouch my jam games, but I really like how this game turned out, so I might go back and quickly fix a few of the biggest issues. But I won't be adding any more content or anything.
I explain it here. th-cam.com/video/_DTwf38xDzY/w-d-xo.html Just created a bunch of room shapes and then used RNG to determine what got picked and what objects would show up in the rooms.

Ambitious and Ill-advised, same thing. 😆

do you have a studio?? if you have can i join???? tnx =)
No studio, it's just me working solo.
I appreciate the effort but I'm slightly concerned...how could you think for one second that a game like Hades would be "simple" to remake?
A little too much confidence in myself, a dash of arrogance, and a slight disconnect from reality. 😅
