How Hades Was Made and Why its Early Concept Didn’t Work

  • This Hades documentary details the development of the indie game Hades and goes behind the scenes of its creation. Discover how Supergiant Games, the creators of Bastion, Transistor and Pyre, prioritized a transparent and inclusive development process before they even had the idea for their first roguelike dungeon-crawler. The documentary also explores all the design decisions that Supergiant Games made and why Theseus was originally going to be the protagonist instead of Zagreus.
    It also takes a close look at the inspirations for the ink art style and why the team choose to introduce more diversity among the Olympian characters. Implementing a cohesive narrative within the roguelike genre also presented lots of challenges that the studio found clever solutions for. Furthermore, it explores how the developers used Early Access to create the best possible version of Hades.

      Touhou Project Please...It's literally almost just as old as the Internet itself,1996
      The Sheer fact that ZUN developed such franchise (and Popularized the Bullet Hell Genre along the way) all on his own since the PC98 era all the way until now (18 main line games) with no one to talk behind his back on what to do and change and it's considered one of the most widely influential Japanese indie game franchise of all time,No seriously he got an actual Guinness world record of this and yet ZUN treats is a simple hobby because he's not really expecting any profit out of it while also letting his huge community have fun with it as they produce Countless Fan Games,Offical Manga,Phenominal Soundtracks and everything is nothing but pure respect and that deserves a Documentary of its own.
      It's sad how underrated it is OUTSIDE of Japan...and To think,the franchise is born purely out of an simple idea from a single beer is amazing af and also,the Whole Bullet Hell Genre wouldn't even be a thing if it weren't him as he's one of the progenitors of that Genre.

    • @seudonimopendiente

      What is native c? Isn't it like the exclusive language of the processor? How does that make it easier to port?

    • @scotwilcox1771
      @scotwilcox1771 ปีที่แล้ว

      C is a programming language that was first developed in the 1980s. It's very bare bones and low level compared to modern languages like C# or JavaScript. C# and JavaScript do a lot of work for you, but include a lot of bells and whistles you may not necessarily need. This is called a "runtime", because it does so much work for you. Your code is embedded in this larger context.
      C has an extremely minimal runtime that basically just wraps common functions of your operating system. It adds essentially no performance overhead at all, which is why it's called "native". Your code is running directly on your operating system itself. It's very hard to beat the performance of C, just because it does exactly what you tell it to do and nothing else. The trade-off is that you have to build everything yourself from scratch, without the guardrails that come with higher level languages. You have to know what you're doing when it comes to C, and it's really easy to screw up and introduce memory problems or security issues.
      Because C has been around for over 40 years, every system under the sun has a way to build and run C, which makes porting easy.

    • @SqueakyNeb
      @SqueakyNeb ปีที่แล้ว +56

      @@seudonimopendiente No. Still quite distant from the processor in some ways. C isn't necessarily easy to port, but (which they came from) C# is basically impossible to port to platforms with no C# runtime.

    • @DaGlitchMaster
      @DaGlitchMaster 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @@seudonimopendiente That confused me too and I'm a programmer. The way he wrote it made it sound like "Native C" was it's own thing. It's just called "C".
      And to answer your question you can get a lot more performance with C than with C#, however it also introduces other problems most notably memory leaks and more opportunities to make mistakes.

    I study ancient Greek literature, and one concept always at the center of debate is that of καλοζ και αγαθοζ, or "beautiful and virtuous". Basically, in ancient Greece, it was common to describe someone virtuous as beautiful, and someone with unpleasant characteristics (such as being of a lower political status, lol) as ugly. So yeah, the gods and heroes were beautiful because thy were gods and heroes, and that was portrayed perfectly in Hades.
    Also, there is an event where Dyonisus, for a joke, tells Zagreus to convince Orpheus that the two gods are the same, thus providing an explanation on the confusion in literature between the two gods.

      @@seudonimopendiente just a heads up that this video is incorrect and the game is made in C++, not C. Additionally it's built on top of a framework called The Forge, which is a cross-platform toolset that allows developers to deploy games to multiple platforms.
      This is a _very_ basic explanation, but I'll give it a shot.
      C is low-level language that gives you direct access to system internals, such as CPU instructions and memory access. Almost all machines and devices you use are running on top of software written in C. It's basically ancient at this point (over 50+ years old) and is the foundation of all software.
      In the 1980s a newer language called C++ was introduced on top of C with the goal to improve on some of C's limitations without sacrificing its performance and accessibility characteristics. C++ is the primary language used today for a majority of video games.

I also remember talking with him about his time at Gamespot in the early years as a journalist and he was always very knowledgeable about what makes a game good on a granular level. Not surprising he eventually pivoted to working as a game developer. It's hard to explain, but Supergiant games(especially Transitor) really capture the Bay Area/SF vibe. Maybe it's the music or the look of them. Doublefine also has this. Sort of a laid back humorous vibe, but still challenging.

    SuperGiants did an epic job with Hades and their hard work shows so much. Hades has become my all time favorite game, because of the love and effort they put into it. The care they put into making Hades as successful as it is, and making it as appealing to a wide range of people shows how much their efforts turned out. I cannot wait to see what they do for Hades 2 and how both story plots merge together to create a bigger world than before.

    Can't wait for Hades II, I am gonna get the early access and help out as much as possible. The love, dedication and hard work is visible in every aspect of Hades, and I can't wait to help Supergiant with the second game. Knowing how much these people care about making the game the best it can be, while understanding that player feedback and ideas are a crucial part of that - I sincerely want to chip in.

    Years ago, I used to play a little game on IOS called "Hoplite". I find there are many similitudes between the 2 games:
    - Set in ancient mythological times
    - The spear build in Hades is a bit like the moves you can do in Hoplite. You can throw the spear, recall it etc.
    - Last, but not least, you can get favors from gods in both games : more health, new powers etc.

    great video! i think hades is a roguelite, not roguelike though. very subtle but important difference. in hades the story progresses every time you die and you take certain things with you after each run to improve upon your next, which is the definition of roguelite. in roguelike games you start from 0 every single time you die.

    It just really bums me out that Hades will never get more content. What separates the good rogue lites from the great ones is the post-launch support. I would have happily paid more money for DLC from Supergiant. It’s my fave genre of game and I really think the game could’ve printed money for them if they had made more content after launch.

      The thing is diversity doesn't have to be attractive to have its own right. The other thing is, that claiming that diversity cam somehow be the cause for a piece of media being bad, is an false accusation. Discriminatory in itself, because it strives to make diversity seen as something that somehow can be a bad thing.
      Like when always when a black person does something horrible all black people are like that, but if a white person does the same it's just one white person within a bunch of individuals.
      And that's the racist thing in claiming: diversity makes things bad.

I mean, they didn't have hair dye at the time and it is so much unrealistic to think that people in Greece could even think that their gods would be able to do something like this. So yeah, they should never have changed that hair to pink or blue or that green skin of tisiphone?
      Good you aren't only complaining about the black and brown skin, cause that would be really weird if that was the only thing you thought of.. like what a coincidence that would be and not at all with the subtle connotation that you believe in non-white people being bothersome while literally everything other deriving from the source material is not. Well what a luck.
