I spray my cockatiel with distilled water to give him a little shower. He loves it! I don't think he would like being sprayed with any essential oils. He sneezes whenever I have my Frankincense out.

Could you give a specific example of a diffuser to use with these oils?

Thanks so much for this vital information. Could you please tell me how bad or how good it is ROSEMARY OIL near budgies? I just discovered that the brand I have is not the best anyway... 😑

I have a perfume oil by kuumba that is Frankinsence and Myrrh. I also use (used until I get to the bottom if it's safe it not) Sheamoisture Frankincense and Myrrh baby body lotion. When I put on the perfume oil, I looked at my bird and realized that while I had used the lotion which was lighter in scent, I have never dabbed on the perfume oil around him so I washed it off and changed my clothes and since have been searching and failing to find answers. Do you by chance have any idea if perfume oil with those two elements is safe. It also contains undertones of sandlewood when I looked up the ingredients. I was not sure if dabbing perfume oil was the same as diffusing, etc and I am now questioning everything. Please help.

Cedar Oil and other essential oils may be used to treat yards and foliage as tick repellant. If it kills bugs, it may also kill the birds that eat those bugs. There may be warnings on bottles about human and pet risks but it is hard to find risk to all natural organisms. We may want ticks or grubs to die but lose worms, ladybugs, and birds.

I have a question that I’ve asked many bird owning youtubers with no response but I think you may have the answer. I hear bird owners often talk about having their bird(s) in the bathroom while they shower because they like the humidity. Is that safe since most shower products are heavily scented? Some even contain not safe essential oils like tea tree and peppermint. I would think it wouldn’t be completely safe but again I’ve heard bird owning youtubers say that they do let their bird hangout in the bathroom while they take a shower. I don’t have any birds (but I do want birds) or I would ask their veterinarian. Thanks!

IMO this would be VERY dependent on the products used. For example, I am fairly sensitive to fragrance so I use products that contain very little to no fragrance. Also, while that means I might allow my bird to be in the bathroom while I shower once in a while, I do NOT allow it to come in contact with the actual product and I use a bathroom ventilation fan. Mostly, when my bird showers, he get his own time in the shower on his perch. He hogs the water anyway.

Hi, My wife takes our 3 parrots into the shower frequently. We do not have any oils in use in there and we do not apply shampoos but she gets them wet. It is so funny because when they are in their cages and the want to take a shower, they will climb in their water bowl and splash about and my wife knows it is shower time, LOL.

I love this video. I completely agree that parrots are ill suited to a life in captivity. I think breeding and purchasing from breeders should be avoided at all cost. We have 2 fabulous rescues in RI..including Foster Parrots, featured in Parrot Confidential.💕
I was in your FB group. I said that I only use OSA or YL oils. Your co admin, Melissa Dyer said I shouldn’t spread misinformation and I that I don’t know what I’m talking about. First, I never told anyone which oils to use or not use... only stated what I’m comfortable with. Second, I’ve had parrots for 28 years, currently have 8, and I’m not someone who takes their care lightly. I told Melissa that I follow the very experienced and knowledgeable, Lainey Alexander (essentialbird.com). Lainey has been very successful with holistic treatments for birds for over 30 yrs. Obviously you are also very knowledgeable, and I think it’s important and fun to research various sources for info on any subject... holistic parrot care, included. I got the feeling, Melissa was triggered by my defending myself and not automatically deferring to her expertise(?). We can gain so much more by staying in the conversation, sharing opinions and protocols, and putting parrot care...rather than egos, first.
I have two FB groups: Vegan Parronts...and another that has nothing to do with parrots. The other group has thousands of members. If I deleted and blocked each person who disagreed with me, (as Melissa did), it wouldn’t be a very interesting group.
Anyhow, I really appreciate your video. Unfortunately, will not see you on FB.

There are many chemicals in our self care products so it's better to be safe and don't get your bird with you in the bathroom.
You can find many more safe ways of making your bird happy! Don't risk anything bcs they are very fragile! ❤

What if you are not looking to diffuse oils? In particular, I am trying to figure out if a spray for my cats is safe for use around birds, the spray contains rosemary, thyme and citrus oils. Is this safe to use on areas near my bird cage? It is a pump bottle not an aerosol if that makes a difference.
