    I agree with Sophia that is worth the extra five minutes to compose the chop fresh each morning vs. doing the ice cube holder/aliquot frozen mush method. I make a cooked grain, rice, lentil mix which I do freeze. I add commercially packaged organic frozen corn and peas. I thaw out a scoop of this frozen mix overnight and in the am I chop the greens, peppers, cooked yam, carrot, touch of fruit (apple, cherry, peach, etc. I try to buy underripe fruit because that was suggested by Tony Silva on his channel. Experiment and if your parrot likes or even prefers the underripe version of any fruit than use that. If not, then use the ripe version).

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Underripe can definitely be good sometimes! I don't know if you watch any of Jason Crean's stuff he's got similar opinions (I've done some interviews with him on my channel too!)

    Hi David... Want to thank you so much for the video about chop. I adopted 2 male cockatiels in June of 2021 from my friend that runs a bird rescue. One of them is 20+ yrs old, & he belonged to a friend of my friend that runs the rescue, but she passed away so I'm not exactly sure what his fresh diet was, or if he had one. My other one is 2 1/2 yrs old. A lady had him before my friend got him, but she surrendered him bcuz he was too wild for her. He was afraid of hands & still was when I got him, and still is somewhat, & I'm not sure if he ever had fresh stuff before. I've tried giving them both different veggies & some fruit from the beginning, & they kind of picked at it, but now they don't want much to do with it. I'm going to try to get more creative with what I use & how I chop it, & see if that makes a difference. Thanks again.😊

    Hi! The moment we had these birds we've started to introduce veggies to them :) Not a lot of luck yet, but they'll get there, I'm sure. I've got 2 questions!
    - How do you keep the chop from going bad? I see you made quite a big bowl and I've learned to take any uneaten veggies out of the cage if they're not eaten within a day's time.
    - There is something the birds really like, directly translated it's called "Eggfood" (dunno if that's the English term for it). They're not allowed more than a teaspoon a week, but they go crazy for it. Would it be a good idea to mix some of that with the chop at all, or since they're not allowed more than a teaspoon a week we might overfeed them on that accidentally?

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      With the Chop we pop it in an air tight container in the fridge to help it keep!
      I’d stop with the egg food it really is not healthy for them at all!
      If you’d like you can give them scrambled eggs once a week instead (no oil, no salt just egg and allowed to cool) that is healthier and more useful.
      You could also try introducing them to fresh herbs, soaked and sprouted items as well as serving the veg in different ways!

      @@TheParrotTeacherThank you for your advice! It's so horrible to me that "pet food" is so commercialized/out to get money that as good as all products contain stuff that's not even good for the pet you buy it for! Hey Helen,
      Have you watched Sophie's video on encouraging parrots to eat veg? I'd recommend that one for some general tips!
      There are some quick fire solutions:
      1. try fresh herbs they are a good bridge between seed/veg and can be made into a toy. If you encourage him to nibble on that he may try other greens!
      2. Provide the veg in the morning before providing much seed, as he will be hungrier.
      3. Mix the seed with the veg so he is encouraged to try it!
      4. Put the veg on a birdie kabob so he can nibble at it/play with it!

    Love doing red, green, and yellow bell peppers, adds a lot of color, birds devour all 3 colors too. They also love the bell pepper seeds! I put them in my chop year round. Then switch up everything else. Trying to go seasonal. I also add quinoa, and brown rice (both cooked and cooled) to my chop as well as a chopped nut of some sort (not in huge amounts mind you).
    I know normal corn is crap, just sugars and empty starches, is baby corn different (I keep meaning to ask but forget)? I never looked at it to close, I just assume it was the same empty calories and sugars as normal corn.
    Also I am so going to shred my carrot like that for them next time, looks like it would be better than a food processor that leaves it in awkward chunks of different sizes. As larger chop like that scares my budgies to death... The little weirdos lol.

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is a nice mix of colour and I think makes it more appealing than just having one!
      Sophie likes to use the seeds too! I saved some, but as I was filming didn't feature it so there wasn't too much in the video!
      Also seasonal sounds like a good idea!
      It is much better than normal corn. It has no fat content, it is lower in calories and is high in VIT A and C!
      They may like it, especially as it bridges the sweet flavour with more veggie. Also the colour is cool!

      The little one should be eating constantly and regularly. It should fill its crop then stop. It also depends on what you are feeding it, I presume baby parrot formula?

      Ours really dislike frozen chop, it has to be fresh or nothing! Plus I feel fresh is generally better for them.
      Generally you'll be able to tell if it's going south at all due to how it appears/looks.
      Some people say that moisture content and where the chop is left in the fridge also impact on how long it lasts!

      @@TheParrotTeacher Yeah makes sense - like all of it. I am on a constant struggle to improve the diet of my birds. I have two budgies since 9 months, that were on a 90% seed diet, with a little bit of fresh herbs und fruits mixed in. I already got far, but here in germany it feels really hard to get it right.
      We have no stores that sell freeze dried stuff for example. There seem to be no german experts on avian nutrition, so all communities here are still full of people who never came to the idea to feed them anything else than store bought seed mixes, and if you ask, where you could buy flower mixes for your own dry mix, you are being looked at, as if you are an alien from another galaxy.
      And if you research what foods are safe, you get a lot of conflicting information. Like a real lot of. And it is so hard to tell which information source is most up to date.
      Thanks to you and Sophie for putting out the infos you have and helping the avian community to improve our birds quality of live

      @@MisterTene it’s not that different in the Uk or USA honestly despite the better availability of various things to give our parrots!
      But things are changing slowly and people are learning! I’d look for human grade flowers like chamomile which is widely available and not in tea bags, fresh herbs like you already use are also awesome.
      We plan on doing more diet content and have a course coming up too!
      It may be worth considering joining either of our patrons or channel memberships too as there are a couple of other German members who chat too!
