Can you beat KotOR without leveling up?

  • Have you ever been playing one of your childhood games, and you hear that classic level up sound, just like you remembered it as a kid? Well I did; actually it happened about a thousand times over the last few months... because in Knights of the Old Republic, THAT SOUND plays.. every. single. time you load into the game. and it doesn't stop until you level up.
    But I couldn't level up.. because I was too busy trying to beat the game. And then, when all was said and done, I had to load the footage of me playing the game into my editing software and do my darnedest to edit around THAT SOUND playing after each. loading screen. And finally... I am done with it all. I never have to hear that sound again. I sincerely apologize for any copies of it that I was not able to remove from the final product. I really hope you enjoy.
    Also, for the record. This run took about 14 hours. That's just the straight-up playtime though; planning the route and the recording and the editing and all that took... much longer.
    If you have any questions please feel free to leave them in the comments. I really just enjoy talking about my stupid challenges--it's why I make these videos.
    Sources and Stuff
    Survive the Montage - RKVC -- This is the song I used. According to TH-cam's licenses I'm not required to tell you this, but I'm not required to do a lot of things... least of all write this description.
    Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic -- In case you didn't notice, that's the game I was playing; it's pretty good. You should check it out. Hopefully none of the wonderful people who worked on this game feel I have unfairly used their art.
    The Strategy Wiki -- If you ever hear me quoting any numbers in this video, they probably came from here: strategywiki.org/wiki/Star_Wa...
    Speedrun.com -- A great website with some great people on it. This video would not have been possible without them.
    Some of the claims in this video have not been verified by me in any way. Most notable of which is the one about being instant killed by melee attacks while stunned and under level 5. I have no idea whether or not this is actually true, but it did bring back some old memories of being killed by a single weak enemy while stunned so, maybe there's something there. Anyway, my point is: I try to always be accurate with what I say, but some of this stuff I don't even know how I would verify. Like I'm not going to check whether or not Malak actually has 327 health. How would I even do that? And if you couldn't tell I am up way too late and need to go to bed, but I enjoy writing a lot more than I do sleeping so...... And as a favour to myself. Yeah. I'm going to bed.

    you didn't need to spend 10 minutes on juhani, she can be talked down without using persuade options

    • @vhoul
      @vhoul  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +20

      Whoops. Yep, I see how I misread the wiki page now:
      "...Juhani will end the ensuing dialog at any time if you don't persuade her or choose the response most clearly inspired by the Jedi Code."
      I understood this as a single path of dialogue involving both persuasion and regular dialogue options rather than 2 options to bypass each persuasion check.
      And for anyone reading, I actually tested it this time. No persuasion is required to recruit Juhani.
      Thanks, that was a nice catch.

      This is literally me. Put too many points into charisma and persuade. Played a Jedi consular but got terrible force abilities. Dual-wielded lightsabers but that didn’t matter because I got stun locked and wiped out. Equipped whatever weapons and gear I thought looked the prettiest.
      I didn’t even realize I had a trash build until I wasn’t aloud to fight with juhani and jolee but by then it was too late. I died 5 times on easy mode and was scouring tips online but nothing helped. I couldn’t even stop malak from absorbing the pods because I didn’t have the right force powers.
      The only thing I had going for me was my hoarding tendencies. I found an immunity to mind altering effects in my inventory and took one of ever stimulant then dropped mines like Pennies.

      Haha, same! This was absolutely me as a teenager, on my long-departed Xbox. Picked Scoundrel and Consular just because I thought they sounded the coolest from a role-playing perspective. Went into the duelling feats rather than two-weapon fighting. A lot of the other feats I picked improved my skills rather than combat.
      Ended up with a very fragile mage who just couldn't tank Malak's hits...

      Paul from Mitten Squad passed away within the last year. He would do a series of challenge runs in Skyrim and the Fallout games that were full of all kinds of odd humor and were always the kinds of runs that were either straight forward or utterly insane there is no inbetween.
      That said, especially in Fallout 3 he would have runs where he couldn’t continue forward without breaking the rules and whenever that happened he would say, “So No, you can’t beat (game) by (challenge). I could stop the run here but let’s see if the rest of the game is possible like this. I’ll let you decide if that counts as a failure or not.”

    Amazing video! I'm about to go watch your kotor 2 without leveling video now too.
    One minor thing that caught my attention, and I could be completely wrong on this because *sometimes* kotor does it's rules a little bit differently from 3rd edition D&D, which the game is based upon, but I believe that the Attack/Defense rules for kotor are the same as 3e D&D. Which is to say that your explanation of it is correct, so for the addition that if your attack roll is better than *or* equal to the targets defense, then you hit. Anything below it is a miss.
    And looks like somebody else already brought up the Juhani thing, but I made the same mistake as you did when I played this game many times as a kid thinking the only way to recruit her was to have points in persuasion, but nope, just picking the correct dialogue options skips the need for persuasion. The persuasion checks are basically just there as a "Skip the 'verbal boss battle'" button.
    Anyway, fantastic work! Would honestly love to see more kotor content from you, your way of showcasing the game is very entertaining!

      I am currently working on other projects involving other games. And while I won't disclose what those games are, or what mischievous things I'm doing to them, I can say that I try to present all of my games with the same sense of passion.

    The "instantly kill an incapacitated enemy under level 5 with a melee attack" thing is an actual mechanic; this is known as a Death Blow. You've probably done it against kath hounds with Stun/Fear, or had it done to you with a Vulkar Stun Stick.

    "Grenades aren't useful against melee opponents (?!)"
    I thought I had told you about Adhesive Grenades! I admire your dedication with the Bastion Suits and Plasmas (nice find), but a single Thermal Detonator with some Adhesive followup should allow you to easily put some distance between you and Bandan (grenades even outrange Force Drain!). Thermal Detonators also make Malak a chump, especially if you dupe enough to get through all his phases.
    Edit: It's also nice to see Carth low-key MVP this run. My man carries Taris, can wear Medium Armor, and forced you to skip past one of the hardest sections of the game! Thank you Carth!

    • @vhoul
      @vhoul  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks!
      Your thermal detonator/adhesive grenade combination is intriguing. My original plan was to use thermal detonators the whole way through, but I ended up switching to plasmas when they proved themselves to be so darn practical. However, I was prepared to revert back to an older save and switch to thermal detonators if necessary. The problem with thermal detonators is it's very difficult to mitigate their damage; since I never ended up needing them, I never ended up testing them all that much.
      I knew they can be an excellent tool against Malak since the saving throw doesn't prevent the knockback (I think we can thank the movies for that). But like all grenades, the saving throw only halves the damage, and since, at my level, I can't even make the saving throw--I'm taking all 60 damage every time.
      I know from the speedrun that you can bring your entire party into the Malak fight and stunlock Malak to death with thermal detonators. So, if it came down to it, and I had no other options, I would have just done that. But I don't actually know if you can stunlock an enemy with only one person throwing grenades. I believe I mentioned in the video how I was scared to duplicate my inventory too many times for fear of crashing my game. Well, that meant that I never actually bothered to duplicate thermal detonators; I didn't have access to them before I started duping. But I knew that if worse came to worse, I could reload from the start of the Star Forge and use the Ebon Hawk for one final dupe session.
      That being said, when I finally got to Malak, I managed to find a different way of defeating him. Actually, if I'm honest, I found two. The first time I defeated Malak I used the ol' AMG to skip Malak's many, many health bars (honestly don't remember if this was in the video). But knowing how anti-climactic that was, I decided to try a more head-on approach. And by 'head-on' I do mean cowardly. And to me, that ending was much more interesting than just doing what the speedrun does, so that's what I settled on.
      But. All that being said, I agree that saying, "grenades aren't useful against melee opponents" was very irresponsible of me. It was a narrative decision that I made to avoid going off on another tangent about how little health I have to work with. I should have said, "grenades aren't the best option against melee opponents, in this very specific circumstance, which very well might change later in the run".
      Oh, and thanks again Carth..

    Around 19:30 with the temple droids, if you are able to activate both terminals the droids will automatically self destruct.
    It helps that the droids take a second to activate when you enter a room so you can quickly run over. If you get incapacitated before getting to the other room you just use another party member for the last one. (Just make sure you solo mode so they stay in the center.)

    I really wanted to see you take on the Leviathan! I think the best way to handle no leveling when you get your prestige Jedi class is to use the same cross class glitch I always use to turn my NPC allies into Jedi as well. The cross class glitch.
    When the game forces you to level up, if you press start or pause fast enough after the dialogue window closes, you can switch characters and they will be forced into a level up. That way you never level your main character and you can do it with someone like T3, who you will never use again for the rest of the playthrough anyway.

    • @vhoul
      @vhoul  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I really wanted to see how I was going to manage the Leviathan too... As for your cross class glitch idea, it sounds against the rules. It's not that I'm not allowed to use characters after they level up--it's that I can't level up anyone: in any way, shape, or form.. ever, under any circumstances.
      I'm pretty sure, and I was pretty sure at the time, that I could've reloaded an old save to redo Dantooine in a way that doesn't break Carth AND allows me to avoid the level up, but I was already very far into the run at that point, and I didn't want to redo all of my hard work (I don't remember if I mentioned this in the video or not). Managing all the different saves I had at that point was already a nightmare, and adding a second set didn't seem worth it given the possibility I might not be able to complete the Leviathan anyway.
      And I did try to beat the Leviathan after the fact. It's really hard.

    • @vhoul
      @vhoul  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Sure, the game is much, much easier if you play it as intended. Other than that, learn the basics of combat, read all of the abilities, and never use auto level up.
      Each party member should choose a weapon type (blasters, vibroblades, lightsabers, etc.) and stick to it. Then, along with that weapon type you should only choose one attack style (critical strike, flurry, rapid shot, etc.). Bear in mind that every party member, including the main character, may start the game having already gone done one of these paths. That's fine, the start of the game is the right time to switch.
      Save often and use multiple save files. I tend to make a new save file for each planet just in case something goes horribly wrong. If you keep dying to a particular group of enemies: use medpacs, stims, and energy shields. Shields let you tank more damage, which is great if you're getting one-shot. Stims boost your stats, which can help hit enemies more consistently, get his less, and take more damage. And medpacs are best for keeping all of your party members alive. Just make sure you're using the right tools for the job. The wrong type of shield might not block any damage, the wrong stim won't help certain character builds, and using medpacs in a losing fight only prolongs the inevitable.
      Never be afraid to pause the game during a difficult encounter; this is a necessary step to using your whole party effectively. The AI loves to queue up basic attacks, but you want to be using your abilities as much as possible. You should also figure out the role that each party member is playing. Some party members are really good at tanking, and others are really good at dying. If you notice this happening, pull back your weaker party members and let the enemies switch aggression to the stronger ones.
      Positioning is very important. If your party is grouped up, you are much more vulnerable to grenades, but you can also focus your damage much better. Additionally, you have a much better chance to hit an enemy if you are behind them. If you're fighting a boss and you just can't seem to hit them, try having your tankiest character fight them head on, while your other party members walk around them and attack them from behind. The boss might turn around and attack them, but you can just run off and let them re-aggro until they give up and let you wail on their back. I think you might even be able to see me employ this strategy against Darth Bandon on my first few attempts (before I started using grenades).
      Perhaps one final thing to keep in mind is gear. For armour, keep an eye on the Defence and Max Dexterity Bonus. Your defence is equal to your armour's defence plus your dexterity bonus. You can see your dexterity bonus on your stats page. It might say something like 10 + 0, 14 + 2, or 19 +4. You want to have as much defence as possible without hurting your dexterity bonus. For example, if a character has 19 dexterity, they will have a +4 dexterity bonus, so they should wear the best armour you have with at least 4 max dexterity bonus. Unless of course that character doesn't use dexterity to deal damage...
      There's a lot more I could explain, but I think that's a good starting point. Don't hesitate to reach out if you want to know more, or would like some clarification. I'd also be more than happy to jump into a call where I could explain things better.
      Unless of course by "try it for myself" you meant try KotOR without leveling.... In which case, don't.

    not all too relevant to this run since you cant level and arent a jedi, but my first playthrough i got drain helath and thought oh what if i drain the health of the things malak is and it works! not sure if thats common knowledge but its cool

      I think it's pretty common knowledge, but usually the kind of thing people discover on their second playthrough. Actually, there are a number of force powers you can use to prevent Malak from healing. strategywiki.org/wiki/Star_Wars:_Knights_of_the_Old_Republic/Viewing_Platform
      (The section on the captive jedi is near the bottom of the page)
      I was going to mention this in the video, but sometimes things just don't fit.

    I don't think I've ever legit fought Malak one on one with a lightsaber, even fully leveled up. It's just way easier to do it this way with mines and grenades. not very star warsy I know...

    Actually tried this. How to stop loving me up at level 6 doing completely melee, but once I get to the academy and do the Jedi training it will automatically make me level up so that's five extra force points and jedi.

    Complete the game as the legendary darth revan without levlling up
    Step 1: use game save editor to give yourself the ultimate power of darth revan
    Step 2: now play the game without levelling up
    Hey, I said I'd play as the legendary darth revan, he obviously isn't weak, but don't worry I won't level up because darth revan starts at level cap!!

    Why would I? The whole point of being a warrior is to aquire the battle & survival skills required. Good luck being a lv1 human which in other words is an infant. I'm guessing you have heard of the words training & progress. Your ridiculous standard would have a neanderthal throwing flint spears at a tank.

      So you're fine with me DLZing past the unskippable door and outside the Jedi academy, but you want me to draw the line at Hotshotting past the Leviathan? Or duplicating items? Where does it end? Short of my enemies failing a 95% chance to hit on every attack, and me getting a 5% chance to hit, I'm not sure you know just how impossible what you're suggesting is. I feel I was very fair with the exploits I allowed myself.@@user-ge8xv8tz3h
