- Witness the KotOR community's own R4NG3 (Jordan) demolish the any% unrestricted world record in 20 minutes and 33 seconds (without loads). In this video I attempt to give a detailed description of everything happening it this incredible run. Unfortunately any% Unrestricted is complicated enough that I had to gloss over and simplify a lot of really cool and nuanced techniques that go into this. FAQ:
Q: Could you explain more about the load remover?
A: We remove the time spent saving and loading for leaderboard purposes. The primary motivation is to give a fair chance to runners who's hardware capabilities aren't quite up to par, that way we're basing the competition on skill and luck, and not on the size of our wallets.
Q: Why do these runs glitch so much?
A: Because it's fun! This particular category allows glitches, and those who enjoy these runs like seeing games break, and trying to break them. If you aren't such a big fan of glitches, I'd suggest looking at the NMG and Glitchless runs on our SRC page (linked below).
Q: Aren't you missing the story?
A: Sure! But the people running this game have played it casually so many times, and know the story back and forward. And of course we all absolutely love the plot of these games. For many speedrunning is just another new way to enjoy this classic game.

I am honestly flabbergasted.... If the KOTOR speedrun community would focus its attention on something more serious we would have had sustainable fusion or FTL drives already. Hats of to your intelligence, ingenuity and dedication though. KOTOR is my favourite game of all time and I've played it like 80 times (but I usually take 40 hours to do it) and I couldn't have imagined the game would still be able to suprise me in this way XD
To be fair, its much easier to manipulate game code than it is particle physics lol Still though, its always impressive to watch speedrunners do their thing.

Man this was a ride and a half. Seeing every single glitch and trick here being dissected and explained in detail was so freakin' cool in this format, especially with how this was edited. Its honestly crazy to see how far good ol' R4nch has come since his NMG days.
I learned quite a bit here and I'll be honest it kinda inspires me to do an any% unrestricted run at some point in the near future when I have the time to buckle down and study the route.

Frankly, this should be shown to some of the developers and catch their reactions to it.
I saw a 'similar' (ie glitches, but no similar descriptions or graphics to explain it) video with some devs for HL2 to watch speedrun of it.

Kotor (Kotor II specifically) is my favorite all time game. I have played hundred of playthroughs over the years and can't believe I never thought about there being a kotor speedrunning community. Looks like I have a lot to catch up on.

That’s crazy this is one of my favorite games of all time. And part of why it’s so good is because the long story. Would of never thought it was possible to beat in 20 minutes.

idk why TH-cam reccommended this to me but I like KOTOR and speedrunning. This video follows the trend I see in speedrunning videos where there is a whole portion dedicated to shoutouts to pros and paying respect to the pioneers and I think that's real neat.

Not quite, you can reload the save and try again. It's a 50/50 shot, so you shouldn't have to try too much. It can be a run killer though
I think I've accidentally done a dlz by accident before.
Plenty of glitches I've experienced that made no sense at the time, so I imagine the world record does have more to go..
I think what astounds me most about this run is that BioWare programming a needless but kind safety check--someone playing KotOR can safely be assumed to know what ALT + F4 does, absent edge cases like small children--is what ultimately blew the game wide open.

I can't believe no one made an update or patch that zooms in on some of the menus. I'd rather they stretch the 480p art from the menu than to have it so small.
There are a couple of glitches that can trigger the endgame. Kotor 2 has similar glitches. I prefer 100% runs when I'm doing it
The music when you were explaining the fake leveling up was really loud compared to your voice. For future reference maybe dial that noise down a little bit

Yup, taking off the space suit is an old school glitch, still used in NMG runs
If they can beat the game in just over 20 minutes you can explain how they beat it in a similar amount of time
Wait, how do we have the source code with the original comments?
So the uncompiled source for the scripts written with the never winter scripting language are available within the templates.bif data file. This is not the ENTIRE source code. Not to mention all the scripts elsewhere and still compiled.
So some of the comments you see in this video are my own, and others are from the devs (such as the "creamy middle" comment). Also some of the code are things I reverse engineered on my own. It varies a lot.
But no, we do not have the full, unabridged, source code unfortunately. As much as I'd love to have it.

this can happen sometimes but in a game as old as kotor its not an issue. Also, some communities will just play the game on older patches for speedrunning if possible.
