If I could suggest something : You should create your LUTs underneath a color space transform that converts your footage from a camera color space (SLOG3 in this case) to a display color space (Rec 709).
That part of the LUT (the technical part) really shouldn’t be guessed and be done by hand because it depends on the particular shots used to create the LUT, on the particular reference display used and on the eyes of the creator.
There’s no problem with adding your creative touch to the LUT (like ajusting the greens and adding some color contrast) but that’s the only part that should be subjective!
Btw, you could also use Sony’s official Rec 709 LUT as the technical starting point and grade underneath it to modify it!

This. I work color-managed; I’ve never had color issues with any camera whose math is known in Resolve. Different cameras have different starting points for sure, but everything I grade gets the same treatment and Sony hasn’t really produced any more difficult a workflow than any other system for me.

I'm actually surprised to hear you say you didn't have a consistent grading workflow because you have *the best colors* in your videos and photos pretty much out of anyone. And I mean that.
I've always used it as a benchmark for what I want things to look like so I'm pumped that you're doing this.

I’m only here to say thank-you. This LUT is perfect for my needs in FCP. I downloaded it, did some quick edits, and the LUT got me 95% of the way there.
Now if I can just get the GH5 V-Log, and a7Riii S-Log to match the a7Siii S-Log I’ll be set. 😅
I will say, this is a great addition to monitors!

It's not far out with sLOG3 from the A7iv and A7Siii
The result is still rather flat so typically will need additional tweaks.
I don't think there would be any issues using this with the A7 IV, small tweaks might be needed ofc but that's pretty much always the case so give it a shot and see if you like it.
I think your LUT looks great! Really like how it does exactly what you said, colors are punchy without making skin go Oompa Loompa. If you ever make one for the C70 in CLOG2, I'd buy it!
Being able to upload your own LUTs to the camera is definitely awesome. I wish I could do it with the A7 IV.
I wonder about the process though. With Slog3 and Resolve, using color space transforms or ACES transforms does all the interpreting for you (and correctly). That, with some exposure adjusting to balance the overexposed log footage should give a fully color corrected image.
Then the creative part starts.
What are the reasons that you do the exposure curves and color interpretation manually instead of a color managed workflow?
(The results are awesome, which is what matters of course).

Perfect timing, I just started looking into doing color grading. Tried slog3 yesterday and just stared at my timeline. My brain crashed. Those scopes and curves are overwhelming af
Log is tough to get the hang of, but when you do, it unlocks things.
@@benjamin.kelley it’s the same as regular footage but with more freedom and precision assuming you applied the colour space transform properly
If you use Davinchi resolve, just do a color space transform. Then adjust exposure, white balance, contrast, the contrast pivot, then vibrance, and saturation. Then an rgb curve. You don't need all the dials to just get a good image. I look mostly for clarity, does it look clearer or muddy. Color and luminously.
Have you ever looked at the Phantom LUT's? I find them amazing to use as a starting point, and it is much easier to get a regular result.

Awesome! I like what you guys are doing. Even if it’s just a monitoring LUT, it’ll be inspiring to not have the “nuclear” greens for sure. I find for me that a lot of my shots have a yellow sway to them. 9 times out of 10 my color balancing is starts with shaving off yellow, even when I color balance it right in camera. And it’s very true when you said the color can be unpredictable, sometimes it’s just really killer and then other times it’s like “what is happening?” Like I had a podcast shoot where I had the Sony A7siii as an A-cam and the Canon M50 as a B-cam (sub $1k beginner camera) with no log, just straight up nuetral color profile and in post, I spent most of the time balancing the A7siii footage and hardly had to do anything to the canon m50 footage. I shoot Sony for my job but I still think canon just shoots better colors out of camera. And you can argue that you can fix it in post, but that can be a lot of work depending on how long a video gets. Minor color correction adds up when it’s 100+ shots. Thanks for the hard work!

What a glitch in the matrix. I switched to Resolve yesterday and decided to start shooting in C.LOG3 starting earlier today.
Newbie question: how specific are LUTs to cameras? You created this LUT with Sony FX3 footage; what would happen if the LUT was used on Sony A6400 footage?

I had a similar question because I am using the A7SIII but technically since it is made for SLOG3 they should work just fine. Please someone correct me if I am wrong. I will download them either way to try it out.

Typically yea, but now with the LUT on camera and monitor we’re exposing mostly by eye.

Yeah... I hate this... and thank you?! Color grading is so hard. How far I miss my exposure really affects how screwed up my colors are. Hopefully this Sony FX lut thing helps me not be such a screw up. And yeah, I'll definitely give this lutsluts a try!

I couldn't do it. I sold all my Sony gear for Canon. Colors were vile. You shouldn't have to go through all of this to get a decent image from the camera. With Canon you can get a great image straight out of the camera without any messing around and if you decide to shoot in Clog2/3 the LUT you can download from their website is perfect.
That’s why I can’t let go of my c70! But for times I need to be super portable and not sacrifice specs/features the FX3 really can’t be beat, even if it does slow down my wofklow a bit sometimes.
@@JesseDriftwood I've been having a good time with the R5C. Definitely not quite as portable or rigable out of the box as the FX3 though. I went from the A7siii to the R5C so it wasn't really much of a change portability or rigging wise. The hardest part was just getting used to how the camera functioned.

I honestly am not sure! I edit in Final Cut while Dave primarily uses resolve. But it’s still super helpful to monitor with the lut you plan on editing with.
Will this work with the SLOG3 from the A7III?
It would probably get you somewhere near but the 8 bit cameras struggle a bit wit sLOG3 you might get banding or blocky effect in skies or dark areas unless your exposure was absolutely spot on at about +1.5 I would suggest
This is hard to do unless in studio situation with controlled light

I did compare the one from Jesse with phantom and they are similar but phantom lut is more or less finished product assuming you got exposure etc correct initially.

I’m not sure! But I wouldn’t recommend it without using a PP. this is built specifically for Slog3.
