    Awesome content Russ! Made a knobster in an old project box. Air manager has revolutionized my experience and training! I've got a $270 55" 4k monitor (running at 2k). I'm thinking of getting 2 more 55" monitors, and going down to 1080p. Love your content. I was hoping to meet at FSexpo... Next time. I'll fly up and we can do some flying maybe! Thanks for the great content. -Ron

    Anothe terrific easy to understand video. Well done Russ. I was amazed at the 2x FPS for the Nvidia based cards. Most people aren’t seeing that much of an improvement.

    • @rbarlow
      @rbarlow  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Charles Kendall yes I wondered if it was because as the external monitor computer it doesn’t have to process the flight model. My fairly powerful Master machine with almost nil graphics settings cranked out over 90 FPS. Without the flight model burden any cpu based bottlenecks are removed and all the cpu cycles can be devoted to graphics. I was also surprised but you could see the consistent 2x throughout the video. I also wondered if by filming the screens versus screen capture with its cpu and gpu demands might magnify any Vulkan advantages?

    Hi Russ! Well done video! I don't think people realize how much work it is to put together a well structured video. I realize this vid is about performance so you might want to skip to last paragraph. I hope the following info might add to your presentation for other viewers as well.
    I built a 27" x 4' mobile sim ( on a 24"x36" industrial platform cart) with chair that moves fore and aft, like in real aircraft. I made it completely out of Home Depot adjustable, mod capable, superstrut. (I am former electrical contractor LOL) No welding required. The whole system roles into my den with 30" doorway. I fold monitors sideways, which takes less than a minute. I like to train at local schools and Airshows as I am retired so mobility of whole system is part of design concept. It should (LOL) role onto small trailer but I am not quite there yet. I can role the whole system anywhere in my house/garage though. Just plug it in.
    I have 3 Dell 27" G-Sync QHD 1440p 1ms response TN and one cheap HD 24" presentation or IOS monitor which face forward or in instructor position. My base system is one computer with dual water cooled Corsair One i160, i9, NVME m.2, 32g, and Nvidia 2080ti. Corsair keyboard, mouse and wireless headset with mic. I use Pro flight trainer PUMA Chopper controls, as well as fixed wing Attack 3 JS and Thrustmaster TPR pedals. I have Realsimgear GNS 430 coming in mail for Airfoil Labs 172sp trainer and DF Bell 407 which both have 430. I am not into complete immersion home cockpits because they are not very flexible. The abilty to twist comms/nav is all I need externally. I have tried a friends VR and it does not work well for youtube or training with two people. IMO. Not a big fan of VR either except for "home alone" immersion experience is pretty cool. VR looks pretty bad on youtube. Too darn shaky!
    Now about performance. The 27" monitor and QHD resolution is becoming a standard in gaming community. It is pretty awesome compared to HD 1080p. 3 x 4k monitors is way off yet, and are not much improvement over 1440p or 2k and are not worth the significant drop in FPS.. I use Vulcan 11.5v4 with the "left" GPU settings at 3/4, full, 3/4. The GPU is not the bottleneck. My right settings are exactly like yours. High to Max on objects, and of course the CPU is the bottleneck and depends on scenery detail and quality of autogen objects. I am getting 60-70 fps at KVCV with XP stock scenery and stock 172sp. This is with 3 monitors at QHD. Stutters have been reduced significantly. I h h h ate s s stutters! If I record with one monitor for youtube with Geoforce Experience I get 90-100 fps with stock 172sp.
    Monitor, physical size, is a matter of preference. Big monitors usually have a 60hz and low response time and you have to sit farther away from them or it will ruin your eyes. IMO, you can increase a monitors size by just sitting closer. My head/eyes are 26"- 32" away from monitors depending on chair and position and controls/aircraft I am using. This is about like sitting at desk in front of PC.
    Good Luck!

    Thanks, Russ. Another super video! Your videos are great instruction for anyone interested in building this type of home cockpit. Your 2-screen cockpit setup was an inspiration for me when I built mine. I already owned a number of Saitek and GoFlight Panels, so I incorporated them into my panel along with the touchscreen monitors. Because of this fact, I can use my hardware to operate most of the functions that the Knobster would typically run. The GoFlight MCP takes care of my autopilot functions. I can also select one or two of the Inner/Outer knobs on one of my Saitek Radio Panels to control the Garmin FMS knobs depending on what aircraft I am flying. I use Spad.neXt to program the knobs. The touchscreen monitors built into the instrument panel provide the pushbutton functionality on the GPS displays and other instruments on non-glass cockpit aircraft. Our PC specs and networking setups are nearly identical. I display my "Flight Model PC" copy of X-Plane on a separate 4K widescreen monitor along with Air Manager, Navigraph Charts, etc. The 15.6" Touchscreen monitors are the same Prechen displays that you are using. Setting the graphics settings as low as possible as shown in your video gives me frame rates in the upper 30's to low 40's on the TBM 900 aircraft (Graphics heavy) using Vulcan. My frame rates are also comparable to yours on my three 50" TV's. (1080P, not 4K) I fear that three 4K TV's or monitors would absolutely kill the frame rates, even with a high-end machine. With the three big TV screens at 60 degrees and my cockpit seat positioned right in the middle of them, the viewing angle of the displays is not an issue. I too am seeing some video tearing on the screens when I pan quickly left to right or turn the aircraft sharply on the ground. I also expect it is because of the slow response time of the TV's. Otherwise, the external view is smooth as silk using Vulcan.
    I prefer my external view show the 3D Cockpit from the Glare Shield up as shown in these links:
    www.dropbox.com/s/ly7h470bi6i5qn8/Photo%20Apr%2018%2C%201%2037%2011%20PM.jpg?dl=0;
    www.dropbox.com/s/lw6q0vf3ayrpeut/Photo%20Apr%2018%2C%201%2041%2009%20PM.jpg?dl=0
    I take a slight FPS hit by not displaying just the external view as you showed in this video, but I like the look.
    Again, many thanks for these videos! Oh, and "Pop Weasel" too! A great tool when using Air Manager and pop-up screens in X-Plane.
    And like yourself, I am now retired since April 1st. 46 great years in Aviation as an A&P mechanic. More time now to fly the desk!
    Besides, what else is there to do during this self-isolation time. 😎

    Great vid. Nice clean graphics and a fantastic presentation. I am waiting for the release of 10.50 non Beta before updating as I have a lot of add ons and Orbx etc scenery. But I have tried vulcan on a Mac, not impressive in Metal, I only have 2GB of VRAM on the MBP so that is why I think, frame rate actually went down by 30%. I currently have a 4 monitor setup with one touch screen for AM on my main system and get 20-60 FPS depending on scenery and WX. So I am looking forward to the stable release. You are a true inspiration. Thanks, be safe, well and strong in this trying time.

My friend and I got my XP11 setup for heli flying, with three vertical 55" 4K TVs, decent heli controls and a separate PC for AM+knobster (thanks to your guidance). I suffer from nausea though and can't use it! (This is caused by the disparity between visual motion cues and the absence of body movement).

    Excellent Video Russ. I sent you a comment in your EAA Sim video a few days ago. I think this one helps point me toward where I need to invest for proficiency training but I would still like to know what your computer specs are for your VR system, maybe you mentioned and I’Ll go back and watch that one again. I don’t have the resources to build both a good 3 monitor and VR system. Building 2 pc’s for a setup like this being shown with older graphics cards and CPU’s would probably work out to be the same as 1 top end I9 9900K GTX2080TI. I’ll run the numbers and see. I wish I had a way to go and experience VR before spending several thousand.
    Thanks for the great videos and keep them coming.

    A great video showing a complex setup! I am using a VR system because it gives me a better depth of field. Try doing power off emergency landings with a monitor system then do it in VR.. Yes it is a hassle notbeing able to just reach out and touch the knobs in VR, but the 3D is worth it. Thanks for showing your great system!

    Hi Russ: Great video as usual :).
    I have (3) 50" 4k monitors for visuals and a 24" touch screen for air manager, pop outs, with Knobster. I used your videos to set it all up and it works great. Thanks again for all your help.
    My frame rates look similar to your original setup, so I'm going to investigate this more. I really like the performance improvement you're getting.
    Also, I have 1 suggestion for you. I notice your scenery has a hazy look to it.
    I found a reference somewhere about a dataref called Fog Be Gone. Not sure who told me about it, but I use its settings on every flight.
    I access it through the Data Ref Tool (which I think I learned about from one of your videos).
    The default setting is 1.0, but I change it to 0.1 or 0.2 to clear up the hazy look.
    My scenery goes from hazy, dull, boring to stunning and beautiful with just that 1 setting.
    You may want to try it and see if you get similar results. Personally, I don't leave home without it.
    Thanks again for everything.

    Thanks for sharing this, Russ. I was wondering how to link two computers together, and now I know. I'm curious as to why people would use TVs instead of fast monitors. Is it just to get as large of a display as possible to bring your peripheral vision into play? I currently have three Acer 27 inch monitors with really fast response rates sitting on my desk at arms length away and am driving them with a 2080Ti. I get nice high frame rates, but don't get the immersion a person would get with huge TVs.

    Great video, very clear explanation and well thought through commentary. These videos must take a lot of time and effort to put together so professionally and your efforts are much appreciated. Couple of questions:
    1) Why did you enable Vulkan on the primary computer? I would have thought that's not needed and would potentially slow things down.
    2) What was the penalty on X-Plane load/startup times? I understood that the X-Plane Vulkan driver does a lot of pre-loading (eg rendering all possible Textures into the graphics card) to avoid having to do that during runtime. Did this cause a much longer wait before the start of each flight?

    • @bruceyboy7349
      @bruceyboy7349 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'll add my thoughts here, for what it's worth.
      1. The master computer is still rendering Xplane (behind the air manager window) I think. Vulkan should speed up the GPU processing so will probably help things overall.
      2. If my understanding is correct, I don't think you're quite right with what you think is happening on startup. It's not rendering all the textures onto the graphics card. What it's doing is compiling all the shaders in advance rather than waiting until they are required. This shouldn't be required for every flight - just the first time Xplane is started with Vulkan enabled. The startup hit may take some time, but it shouldn't take as long every time.
      Hope that's useful!

When you set air manager to be on top of Xplane 11 in the master computer, how to you manage your flights and configuration in Xplane? Is there a hot key to minimize air manager so you can see the Xplane window? Thanks for your answer in advance.

    Just to add... The response time, low refresh rate and lack of G-sync on some bigger monitors makes them look a little blurry/fuzzy/stuttery on fast moving objects even in Vulcan. I am assuming you are using HD 1080p x 3 on big monitors. One can also sit a bit closer to smaller 1440p monitors with G-Sync and fast response and get a great 3 monitor experience with Vulcan. Vulcan, if built out to more and more cores is a game changer for XP. It is already a big improvement. Thanks for video!

    Hi Russ, love your sim set up and helpful videos. This message is wordy, I know. I apologize in advance, but didn't know how else to reach you. I've just recently purchased (3) 50" monitors and a variety of saitek products. I'm on a path to have a similar set up as yours. Was curious if you've put together any type of spec sheet detailing your equipment including product manufactures and measurements between the various components. More specifically I'm looking for your desk and monitor stand manuf and heights above floor you've set them too, flight panel housing manuf, yoke height above floor, chair your using and any other details you might be willing to share. I realize many of your answers are going to be "it's personal preference". Having said that, if you do have some type of a spec sheet it would be hugely helpful starting out. I'm also considering building the structural portion of the sim to mount the components myself. I've been watching your videos on (# of computers vs. monitors, etc.) and your corresponding setup recommendations, all extremely valuable information. If you do have such a sheet can you please tell me how to access it? The time savings would be enormous. My products should arrive next week with the exception of the Saitek yoke, which no one seems to have in stock. I really look forward to viewing all of you videos and those to follow. Thanks Russ, any help would be much appreciated :)

    Very nice demo ! My system is the same as yours. I are also testing multi-monitors by 11.50b4. I found that the external visual is stuttering when AI planes are shown on the screens, even its FPS still keep in 60. It is not reasonable because the major resource occupation for AI is on master computer. Do you find out the similar problem?

    Great job as always Russ, you always go the extra mile, was just about ready to turn in, and then I saw your notification for a new You Tube, so I grabbed the laptop and sat down and watched, always amazed at your detail to explaining along with your art work. My computers are just a bit slower but only running a 1080P forty inch, high recovery monitors maintaining approx 25 FPS. I am curious how you switched back and fourth to Vulkan from opoen GL? It would be interesting to see the difference on my system, but Michael XForce PC recommended downloading a second copy of Xplane 11, as you know that would be two copies in the case of multiple monitors and computers. I didn't want to turn on Vulkan and have issues, since I finally got all my add ons loaded and working. Per your past video, I set my vision from the center, I set up my Yoke in the center of my two touch screens at a 45 degree angle creating a 135 degrees, I really didn't have the room for the monitors to go out to give me a 180 degrees. My only regreat is I sit at the center of my cockpit, instead of of to the right, but by doing this I have an even viewing angle, maybe next go around I will create a two hole cockpit, but for now still working out the bugs and trying to grow with Air Manager.

    Russ, I agree with you on VR. The immersion is great but, at this point the "twisting" is a problem. Too many twist "misfires". A misfire is like tapping something on a touchscreen and it does nothing. I find that to be extremely annoying and a non-starter for VR, at least so far. As you said, maybe really expensive tactile gloves will help. Lastly, I think 3+ monitors and IOS will be the only solution for training with instructor/student situations for quite a while. How would an instructor teach someone in VR? Trying to follow the head movement of a student could make the instructor go cross-eyed! LOL

    Thanks Russ. I wish I could show you my set up to explain but Here goes. I bought 3 Samsung 49inch UHD TV”s to use as my external visuals. The quality is fantastic but... yesterday for the first time I decided to try to run all three Monitors on one machine. It’s not new but it’s pretty good. i7-7820X CPU @ 3.60GHz 64.0 GB Ram. 1080 T Graphics Card. My problem is finding a resolution to use that doesn’t kill the frame rate. So question is are you using Nvidia surround or are you using the Windows display settings to run the Visuals? As it stands I have been using 3 such Computers mentioned above to run just the Visual portion of Xplane and as you said you want to talk about maintenance, holy smokes. Every Day I spend about an hour just getting set-up because of the constant updates on not just the 3 visual machines but on the master also.

    Great videos Russ! Question: Do the two computers need to have identical x-plane folder contents in terms of add-on scenery, add-on aircraft and plug-ins?

    • @rbarlow
      @rbarlow  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually, since you’re only going to be using the pop out windows on the main computer it really doesn’t have to have the same scenery files. Also, the External visual computer doesn’t need to have the nav data. Of course if you start using two different computers to show scenery views as external visuals then they need to be synchronized. I think there’s a way to serve the scenery to more than one copy of XP over a network but I haven’t tried it and am not sure how to do that so you might have to do some independent research if you have the need.

    Nice job, thank you. I’m satisfied with my 3-monitor home sim using XP11. I would like to add a 2nd desktop to help share the load and improve the scenery with a better frame rate. Can you explain what you used and how you connected the 2 desktops? Do you need a second copy of XP11?

      David Pippin I understand that part as explained at 4:53. What I was asking was how to connect the two computers. Was it an Ethernet switch, a router, or connecting them directly which I’m not sure if that can be done. Russ explains how to set up both computers right after that. Also, does the second computer need XP11?

    Hey Russ, great video and set up! Is it possible to run x-plane and air manager on the same computer and have the instruments displayed on a second monitor with the live GPS showing through the overlay. Any help would be appreciated.

    • @rbarlow

      Tannen Gibson unfortunately no since the XP popped out windows can only be dragged to the extended desktop monitors that are on the same computer. The Sim Innovations guys are toying with a way to stream the video from the pop outs to Air Manager on a second computer. Now that would be great as it would eliminate the second copy if X-Plane, much of the hassle, and allow even a pretty basic computer to run the panel.

      @@rbarlow I found an alternative method that might help out some body. If you do not have two gaming computers. I used my gaming computer to run Xplane and connected it to my standard laptop through wireless projection (miracast) extend mode. This allows you to display the instruments on your laptop.If you wish you can connect your laptop to another monitor with an HDMI cable on duplicate mode. This method is not perfect by any means but gets the job done and allows you to run Xplane and have your instruments with a working GPS on a second screen. Please note the first time i tried miracast it said it was not available on my laptop but i went back after restart and it worked.

    Hello Russ, this is not directly related to this video post but was just looking for one of your vids to ask a related question. I'm having trouble with Air Manager shutting down while in X-Plane 12. I'm running 2 external Wimaxit 15.6" monitors. All fire up as expected but while flying Air manager (vs 4) will shutdown unexpectedly. I've contacted Siminovations and they suggested a CPU bug? just wondering if you or anyone else may have experienced this? My GPU is an NVIDIA 2070 super. 1 main monitor and the 2 Wimaxit on one computer. Just a novice with Tech, though built my system.

    Hello Russ. For your system, do you need to bye two copies of x-plane ? And do you need 2 copy of Air Manager. On witch computer should I install Air Manager ? Thank you for your help.

    • @rbarlow
      @rbarlow  ปีที่แล้ว

      The diagrams in the video explain the options better but you can run it all on a single robust computer but if not run your panel on a computer with Air Manager and a copy of XPlane as the Master connected to the flight controls and the second computer running a second XPlane as the as the External Visual.

    Hey russ, as a recent subscriber, and I move already asked a couple of questions. But I have....another slight issue. I’m totally a plug and play kinda guy. Anything too complex with computer just dries my brain. But as per your advice, I installed XTextureExtractor and saved all the positions of the widows on one display. Now I have 3 oddly arranged displays, I can find the pop outs, and there’s no sign of “said” programme even being present. Can you help. I have the ultimate fear for getting my 787-9 ready for full flight with a 27” monitor intended for pfd/eicas info, and touch for the main flight managment computer. Laid out in the exact formation to the real jet. But my mind just can’t grasp it. Any thoughts please. 👌🏻👍🏻

The first 1:30 of this video shows my views for the externals - th-cam.com/video/rb4YnzCxjnY/w-d-xo.html. If that does not work for you, I have heard of people going into planemaker and making everything transparent except the prop. BTW - great video - well explained.
