    Russ, we’ll done Sir! I’ve followed your Multi-view setup from 5 yrs ago and also have 3 55” 4k screens. I abandoned the setup when MSFS 2020 came out but have now restored the setup in anticipation of SU10. I do hope Asobo will incorporate the same level of adjustment X-Plane uses so we can really take advantage of Multi-view.

    Fantastic job Bruce seriously, great detail, very helpful information. Because of the information you've given me about how to replicate my own Cessna 172 panel with dual G5s and Garmin Navigator, I was able to hone my skills on my simulator and pass my IPC after six years of non-currency. I plan on upgrading to the multi monitor view outside the plane (I'm already using the touchscreens as you use for your instrument panel). When time permits, I'd love to see a video with your impressions of some of the newer video cards and how they might be implemented or, whether or not they're even necessary.

    It inspired me to join the beta. And I have to say it works very well.
    I use 4 30" monitors so I get a bit creative. One is touch screen for AM.
    I have found that using windowed mode for the screens is really cool, You can spend a bit of time fine tuning by moving the view and the screens around to fit into a cockpit mockup. I use AirManager as well and was very pleased with how it works perfectly in the beta at least initially for me.

    Great Video, I have tried VR, its great, but for a few reasons reasons my eyes get strained after 20 minutes especially when my motion sim is active. With MSFS introducing Multiview decided to bite the bullet and purchase three 50 inch 4K TVs (cannot fit much more in the space I have available) and am really enjoying the experience. It does not of course have the immersion of VR, but everything is super clear from edge to edge and I don't have to be moving my head all the time due to VRs mostly limited FOV and the image is not 'bouncing' like it did in VR with motion. Videos like these really help in understanding the correct setup, which I think is very important to ensure everything looks as it would in the real world.

    Hey Russ, thanks for making this video. It was VERY helpful to understand the fine details of how this all "maths" out. I've been flying VR exclusively for years but found "airline style" IFR to be extremely cumbersome sitting in my pit, trying to look down through the nose hole at the [things]. So I have been mocking up a new pit for flat screen instrument procedure training. I really dislike Track IR so triple screen Multiview is the way. I really appreciate you explanation and again, I thank you for the information. :)

  • @ksp1278
    @ksp1278 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Well done Russ. You explained these concepts perfectly. I never understood before why really wide field of views distorted. It didn't occur to me that it was rendering it as if it were on a flat screen rather than a curved one. It seems to me that surely there must be a way of just rendering one view and the having some post processing to remove the warping from the image based on the angle you actually have the screens at. Mathematically it should be possible. I am not sure if it technically is.

    • @srbarlow
      @srbarlow  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There is software to map images like FlyElise but it is $$ and cumbersome and MSFS needs all the CPU power it has already without another program.

    Finally debunking the myth of "stretching the image at the edges" with surround, which in fact results from placing the side monitors at and angle while in flat projection mode. An indeed multiview is much better than surround allowing angling the side displays. However, while waiting so long for multiple display proper support I switched to VR and I will never go back.
    I still use massive amounts of buttons and levers to fly in VR without touching the mouse, I even use voice commands with Axis and Ohs to operate the autopilot in the airliners. The hidden benefit of VR for the semi-serious VR cockpit builder - you don't need to care how your buttons and levers look like, because in VR you can't see them. You only need to feel them the tactile way and you are allowed to admire the stereoscopic view not only of the scenery but also of the beautifully recreated cockpits with lights and shadows dancing on them while turning flying at dusk.

    Great explanation, extremely helpful. I have 2 32" 1440p monitors, and I am simply trying to "Extend" my view onto a secondary monitor which is only angled 20-30 degrees. In the video you imply that I should be able to set the "lateral rotational offset" to something other than +90 or -90 to accomodate other angles. I find this is not the case, any other number results in the images not lining up where the monitors meet at the bezel. Further I find a lot of issues with free look (i am stuck with the virtual cockpit), where the other views don't stay locked to the main view they kind of rotate/roll/shift in ways that cause disorienting alignment/geometries of objects. Nvidia surround doesn't have that problem, but suffers the stretching affect as you mentioned, as well puts a giant monitor bezel in the center of my view since I only have two monitors not three.... Just wondering if you have any thoughts, have spent hours trying to get this to work.

    Hi Russ! Great content. I have a question about using mulitview with a motion platform. How important is it to attach the monitors to the platform so it moves with you? It would seem it would work fine with the TV's static and the motion platform moving within it since when you pitch and roll the pic within the screens simulate the movement. If the screens were attached, would it be twice the degree of movement? Thanks in advance for you reply!

  • @jaybeckham

    Russ. First really enjoy your educational videos. Very helpful. I do have a few questions. I have two 32" monitors and could purchase a third. Don't have the funds at this point for three 55" ones, perhaps in the future. Seeing as how a pilot in a Cessna sits on the left won't two 32s look some thing like the actual aircraft windows? Or the second option is three 32" but according to your spreadsheet that would place the eyes at 24" or so which is somewhat close. Another option would be two 32s straight across with a 32 at an angle on each side. That would push the eyes back some to get a 60 degree view of the two monitors. Any thoughts on this? Thanks again for all you do for this wonderful hobby.

    The problem with a lot of simmers is that they forget that in the real world, you are looking at a curved image. You have extra space in the real world for your gear because your view in the cockpit is through a curved glass that goes around your cockpit and gear.
    If you are serious about your sim experience, you should either stick to curved monitors or VR headsets.

  • @anthonyvallillo422
    @anthonyvallillo422 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Great explanation. I have never seen a multi monitor setup that was not angled in. In fact, it would be ridiculous not to angle the side screens. The whole point is to have a wrap around view, not the view you would have up close to a billboard! In the real world we exist inside more or less a sphere, which is why those military sims use the spherical dome for the visual. What we really need is a junior version of that. A spherical screen around 15 feet in diameter with a small multi projection system just above your head. I’ll look for that in a decade or so! VR, of course, falls way short in terms of actual interface with the cockpit controls. Mixed reality might be the answer for that, who knows. But for now, monitors are so cheap that they are the way to go. Now if only I could afford 6!

I have one 75" monitor at the front and two 65" monitors at either side of the front monitor. Hopefully Asobo and Microsoft will develop multi monitor to maych the flexibility of Xplane11 and P3D so I can use MSFS with my mixed size multi monitor setup. Although I suppose it's not a definite that they will develop the multi monitor functionalitry. WHat do you think? Regards Peter

    • @srbarlow
      @srbarlow  ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Phenomenal insights Russ! What happens when you use curved monitors?
    I just replaced my 24" flat screen with a 32" curved, and everything looks so much better, e.g., the cockpit windows almost "seem" life-size, and gauges / instrumentation is so much easier to see as well. It just feels so much better with this larger curved monitor.

    • @srbarlow
      @srbarlow  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually since the sim stretches the image to make it look correct as the viewing angle increases as you move front center to edge on a flat projection, curved screens actually introduce a small error. Probably unnoticeable. Fon a curved monitor to look perfect you would need to place the viewpoint at the center of the radius of the arc, set the displayed FOV to match the physical FOV, and use a cylindrical projection. That being said, if you measure your curved monitor edge to edge and follow the formulas in the video it will probably look good unless your monitor has an extreme curvature.

      No currently the images jump from monitor to monitor. Asobo really didn’t understand how hone simmers use the views and probably never thought of it. I'm in awe, Professor. Your videos often tempt me to wax maudlin, so I'll leave it at that this time.
    Recently it was pointed out that one needs matte screens in such setups to prevent reflections of each monitor onto the other two. I find that screen surfaces are never included in the specs of monitors or TVs online, making shopping for them difficult. From all your experience in X-P and MFS, have you found "inter-monitor" reflections to be a problem? If so, have you discovered models or brands of monitors or TVs that minimize it?

    • @srbarlow
      @srbarlow  ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually you don’t notice it much while flying. Look at your cellphone which reflects and you look through the reflection. But if you try to film your screen it immediately become glaringly obvious. Look at rtings.com website as it does include reflection in the reviews. I suggest you buy three TVs from some place like Costco with a 90 day no questions return policy and good prices. Then open one and test it with the sim. Can you allso show the over head panel with air manager? I am thinking of setting up a multi panel set up. I believe with the help of better VR input device such as the PointCTRL, along with the properly positioned transitional input devices such as MCP/AP panel/MCDU etc, and kneeboard/EFB application such as the OpenKneeboard that uses a real pen/drawing tablet as the physical drawing board, VR/MR is the future of the simulator training. USAF(perhaps also Navy?) is experimenting that. But I agree that for "basic" instrument(*i.e. inst. rating etc) training where the advantages of VR won't shine, flat screen is perhaps currently somewhat easier to use. But using VR as the vision system will likely, relatively speaking, drive down that part of cost, especially for an advanced set up, while providing a 3D vision that flat screens/projectors can't. Device such like wearable VR mouse(PointCTRL) or wearable VR controller can significantly decrease the cost of setting up the panels while providing some tactile feedback (though I believe the knobs are still unreplaceable), and have the benefit of quick swapping of cockpit configuration. This might not be appreciated by the Pro-level sim but certainly is not a bad choice for home flyer.

      Actually the axis of movement is through the center of the screen yet you see the same image on the screen at any eye location only viewed from that angle. If you are off center the visual effect is that you are moving in a crab. This is most noticeable while taxiing or landing on a surface with a straight centerline ahead. Your assertion makes sense. It just doesn’t work. Thanks for your comments.

    There are relatively few flight sims that support splitting out the 3 viewports like this, although it has been popular in sim racing for many years, which is originally why I picked up triple monitors close to a decade ago. I thought an added perk would be to play them in “regular” games, as many claimed to be “Eyefinity” or “Nvidia Surround” supported, only to find out that this was false advertising, as if a game title does not spilt the cameras out to 3 separate viewports, the distortion in your side monitors will be be unusable garbage every time.

    I'm finding with my Ryzen 5900x, RTX 3080, 32 Gb RAM, and M.2 Hard drive I'm getting 20 FPS on the ground and about 25FPS at 3000' in populated areas on High Graphics settings. Coming in to land in pupulated areas I'm dropping below 20 FPS and stuttering. Sacrificing high/ultra graphics for the realism of a multiview 5 screen setup is killing me, but i can't go back to surround and I can't bring myself to do any less than 5 monitors.

  • @keithharrison1453
    @keithharrison1453 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nicely explained, Russ, much appreciated.
    I am still on a tight budget, so have yet to upgrade my GPU. In turn, VR seems even further away. But, on a brighter note, I do happen to have three 27 inch matching 1080P Screens, so this looks worth the effort to put the three screens together.
    Also, as a former real-world Rotary Wing pilot (many years ago), without VR, the lack of any peripheral vision via one screen, makes the current 3rd Party helicopter implementations within MSFS very frustrating and unrealistic, making it feel more like just a video game.
    But with two, or three screens, I can see that could work, and provide much better immersion even if it is just 2D and not VR. As I am sure you will know, when flying a helicopter in the real world when at the hover, you just look ahead and pick up movement via your peripheral vision. I think multiple screens could well get much closer to reality, so I think I will give that a go ASAP. I will need a new triple stand, as I threw some of the original single stands away when I created a dual-screen stand set up (with the 3rd used on another machine with its original solo stand).
    I agree one key aspect for many, is the scope to include a (living) passenger to share the enjoyment with, which cannot realistically be done with VR, but can be achieved via both single and multiple screens. That is a very real factor mitigating against VR. My wife has certainly enjoyed visiting places in MSFS that we used to know, and flying around them in MSFS to take another look. As it happens, she has reduced vision in one eye, so VR would never work for her anyway.
    Maybe we're getting old and sad, but we've certainly visited all of the places that we have lived and/or knew (in various Countries), and that has been great fun, and will be even better with a GPU upgrade to crank up the detail. We obviously had to land at the front of Buckingham Palace, it would be a shame not to!

    Mr Barlow, fantastic explanations, thank you. Do you think curved monitors would line up correctly, and perhaps reduce the reflection of one monitor off of the other where the bezels meet? Or, would the curve create a distortion making things worse?

    • @srbarlow
      @srbarlow  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well to be exact the images produced for monitors in XP/MSFS assume they are going to be on a flat monitor so you would be introducing a small amount of distortion if they are viewed in a curved screen BUT the error for FOVs of 90 degrees or less are probably negligible. The other issue is that the monitors themselves have a radius of the curvature and depending on your selected FOV they may not coincide. This may be negligible too. Aside from the reflection issue you suggest I don’t think it would be worth any extra cost for curved screens.

    • @gimbalaxis
      @gimbalaxis ปีที่แล้ว

      @@srbarlow Yes I'm starting to understand from another video posted by someone with 3 curved Samsung G7s, that with curved monitors, the angle where the monitor bezels meet ends up being shallower than what it would be if the panels were flat. Eg, if flat panels were set at 60 degrees, and you positioned curved monitors in their place, the angle where the bezels meet might only be 45 degrees from each other. I think that makes it an easier decision - if nothing is to be gained from curved monitors, and it possibly might make it more difficult, then I can save money and have an easier time making it work. Thanks again for all the amazing info.

      @@srbarlow One other thing I think I figure out how MSFS / Asobo are using the Lateral Offset. I think they are taking the straight-ahead view as Zero, and then the FOV from center to the edge of the side window is the offset. So in your example of 3 windows of 45 degree FOV each, the offset from center is 67.5 in either direction (plus and minus, half the total combined FOV).

Yet given how much explanations we got for the menu settings overall up to now that doesn't seem likely.
