LCY is situated in an environmentally conscious area. So from when LCY opened in 1987 there have been curfews and restricted hours of operation at weekends.

LCY is an extraordinary airport, based on its location, size, construction etc. A major bonus and draw for London and a real achievement and victim of its own incredible success. Currently the airport is being remodeled to allow for a larger departures lounge etc. My absolute choice of airport in London when traveling intra Europe. This airport is the envy of any major city as there is nothing like it.

I think I was referencing the excitement of the arrival and departure experience at LCY which I did not make clear and is second to none. The only other airports that are centrally located to a city where I have had a similar experience are Rio - Santos Dumont and São Paulo - Congonhas. Both amazing too.

More cities should have small centrally located airports for people that are willing to pay the extra $50.

Before LCY was built, there was an old gas work and a sugar refinery, They were used as a stand-in for the bombed out Vietnamese city of Hue in the Sniper film in Stanley Kubricks 1987 Movie Full Metal Jacket. Kubrick didn't like flying. His home in Childwick Was only 35 minutes from LCY.

London City Airport is still quite small. I remember taking a 55 minute flight from Antwerp, stepping out of the plane, walking into the arrival hall, tripping over the carpet and fracturing my pubic bone. Fun times! After beging helped by the stewardesses and the pilot from the plane and some fire fighters and getting some oxygen, off i went to Eastham Hospital where I spent almost a week yapping in pain and enjoying their Indian meals (most of the patients were Indian, thankfully) until an ambulance took me back under the Channel to good old Belgium. A PR from the airport visited me in the hospital a day after the accident, carrying a huge basket full of chocolates, sweets, fruit and books. That wouldn't have happened at Heathrow I'm sure ;-)

Used LCY when it first opened on a regular basis when it was just Paris and Brussels. You could arrive 25 mins before your flight, check in and be on the plane.
Those days it was turboprop only. Interesting approach! As a regular traveller one night flight back from Brussels got to do the flight in the jump seat on a British Midland Dash 8 acting for Sabena. Amazing approach to LCY on a clear April night. How you put a plane down on such a short runway is incredible.
In those days collect your luggage , clear customs and immigration and be in your car in 20mins!!!!
For me quickest way to get to Paris and Brussels from where I lived in SE London. This was pre Channel Tunnel. Only problem was we usually ended up on a remote bus stand at Paris and Brussels. Always took ages!!!!

I'd love the experience of not having to travel far to the airport and taking off above Canary Wharf, but it's generally a fair bit pricier than other options - plus a lot of its destinations are accessible by train (in fact, that's how I did London-to-Zurich last year.)

I have to disgaree on the comment "Is London City amazing?" In my opinion, for what I want an airport to be - convenient, hassle free, fast, in the centre of the city...it is amazing. Built on a former dock, where you can still see the dock freight railway lines embedded beside the runway, the ability to imagine then deliver an airport is incredible. The airport knows its customer and focuses on serving their needs well. The building itself could have a a significant redeisgn and upgrade. Flights into LCY typically have a price premium and it's worth it. Note there is a railway (DLR) station at the airport with direct services to Stratford, Bank, Tower Gateway, and Woolwich, which run every five minutes or so, the fare when paid by card, to Stratford is £1.90.

City center airports really shouldn't be allowed to remain open once larger hubs are completed outside the city. It's a bad and unproductive use of land even if you ignore the well documented health impacts for air quality in the surrounding area. LCY, DCA, SAN, DAL, and SJC all fall into this category. I review flights. Literally, my job… and you seem to watch related content, so… it’s cool for you to watch such videos but you feel the need to chastise the person making it. Gotcha. Typical chip on your shoulder behavior.
If you have such a massive problem with it, contact SWISS and London City Airport- surely they’ll listen closely when you let them know they’re typical ‘American’ things.
