the snare drums don't sound right with them. None of the air and dryness gets out, and the snare "room sound" isn't there compared to the other two. Also, the Martin Logans have very realistic vocals, much better than the other two. The Sonus Faber sound like very nice speakers, but the other two sound more live altogether. The Magnepans do have a speaker sound, coloration, but it's very pleasant.

I have never heard any of these speakers in real life, but to me in this video it's clearly:
Martin Logan > Sonus Faber > Magnepan.
That last one probably really needs one or two subs to support it, but even then still it sounds as flat as its building dimensions are.

Amazing video, thanks for your time and efforts put into creating this seamless comparison. I thought the Martin Logan had the most detail and transparency of the three with enough bass. The Sonus sound was thin and lacked definition to my ears. The Maggies were second best, had lots of air but the bass was thin and the mids were little muffled as others commented. Of course you have to be there in person to really evaluate the speaker sounds. Thanks again and I look forward to your future videos.

Magnepan has the most neutral open sound; 2nd is Martin Logan but its vocals sound a little "muffled" compared to the Magnepans. Sonus Faber rank 3rd IMO, having a more uptrending tonal balance (which upon first listen can be appealing but wears over time). Well done demo!

Agreed. I think the bass is possibly the most tuneful on the Martin Logan’s. Vocals were more muffled for sure but also a bit more focused at the same time. Snare sounded a little choked and buried on the ML too

Had both maggies and MLs in my living room. Maggies require distance from sidewalls and have a very narrow sweet spot. When ideally placed they produce a massive soundstage...as long as your head is in a vice. MLs have a more conventional soundstage and need less room, but they are more revealing and detailed. Ive found a significant difference in sonic quality between the entry level LRS and higher end maggies.

  • @walkingphotos

This is by far the best comparison video I’ve ever seen, and the effort involved to produce the final seamless version must have been considerable.
Draw your own conclusions about which sound you prefer, but for what it’s worth, I’ve used MLs for years, but have changed to Maggies. What this video can’t convey is the height and depth of the soundstage Maggies produce. Also, MLs are every bit as tricky to place to get sounding right as the Maggies, and have a much smaller listening sweet spot.
No negative comments please, I’m only trying to help!

OMG! Perhaps the best comparison I´ve experienced on YT! Thank you for all your great effort you put into this video - very technical correct! It was very very fun and interesting to listen and compare these speakers. I want more of this!!! I cannot decide which is best - Maggie or ML? It comes down what kind of music you are listening to.
My 5 cents about these contenders.
Maggie+ Live, natural sound, large sound stage, airy, you do not miss a note! Maggie-: Little thin on mid bass. I thought this was without a sub!
ML+ Thick/full sound, natural voice/choir, great low extension with slam/dynamics, airy and quite natural. ML- Not much... Not as open sounding as Maggie & less live with smaller sound stage, but overall a great performer.
SF+ ??? SF- Must have better room acoustics (little harsh). Where did midrange and bass notes went?
ML does really really well in this competition and is the over all winner as it sound descent on all tracks, but Maggie on second song. A tough one!
It is easy to hear that dynamic speakers that SF need a room with better room acoustics as they sound hollow and harsh. Electrostats or ribbon design does not spread sound half as much and becomes much easier to tame in normal rooms, IMO. You must pay attention to front wall distance (bass performance), toe in and perhaps add some bass traps and tame the back wave with soft or diffusion materials then you are good to go :) Regards

Spot on. Was hoping to finally find this comment. Been puzzled by most comments ignoring the SF and gushing over the dull and constricted sounding ML. With the SF the speakers disappear and the room becomes the "soundstage". Also that *is* what a snare and hi hat sound like. The other two are what recordings of a snare and hi hat sound like.

Have been interested in Martin Logan for some time and pulled the trigger and bought the entry level ESLs in part due to this comparison. I listened to this comparison using Sony MDR 7506 headphones. My MLs sound remarkably like this recording. To my ears, the MLs sounds like the original recordings. The other two sound like recordings of speakers in a room. I do agree the Mags have a more open airy sound on this recording, but the MLs just sound like the performers are there up close. To my ears, the Sonus just sound like average speakers. I guess everyone has their own taste. Thanks for making this recording - it is very well done.

This is absolutely the best speaker comparison I've heard on TH-cam ever! While one will never really get a true sense of realism unless in front of the speakers, subjectively this made the best comparison in terms of difference of sound presentation.1. Sonus Faber is way to bright for my liking but huge soundstage. 2. Martin Logans lacked the size of soundstage compared to Sonus, but the midrange was quite warm, but surprisingly lacked a little at the top. 3. Magnepans were the surprise here. Lacked a little warmth and bass, but the soundstage was big. Overall the most balanced sound of the three to my ears, considering all the TH-cam compression and basic laptop soundcard bluetooth earphones etc. If anything I now know the difference in sound presentation between Martin Logan and Magnepan, which I've been curious about. Great comparison, thank you!

      @HiFiers  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Thanks for you comment Dale, the setup for the Maggies is exactly how the manual suggest to place them, closer to the back wall to gain bottom end (which we needed for matching low end with the other speakers). @histubeness 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@HiFiers I agree with Dale. Yes, the manual states that bass can be increased by closer wall placement, but also says to start by having them 3 ft. out from the wall, and move them forward or backward, to taste, which isn't the case here. They're too close to the wall. I've owned 5 models of Maggies. No chance for decent front-to-back-depth revelation, without pulling speakers well out into the room, if possible. A much bigger, deeper room would be ideal for a test like this, which, I realize, is easier said, than done.. Overall, though, this was an impressive test, with the Aerius pair coming out ahead, for me.

Love the sound of the Martin Logan in the video.
The Sonus Faber sounds shrieky, but this immediately sounded to me like it's a problem because of a lack of a rug on the ground.

Great side by side by side. I have had ML's for over 30 years. To my ears they won hands down. Who was the swing band
    towards the end ?

The top end of the Sonus Faber sounds quite coarse in this company. The Martin Logans sound the most convincing to me and are the ones that would be the most satisfying to use for all kinds of music.

Agreed. My step father was a big audiophile and he bought many high end speakers over the years and I will always remember the ML. They just sound SO good

For me the clear winner is Martin Logan. The only speaker from those three that really blows me away. A very rich tone, waem and deep and wide image. The other two sound small. The Sonus Faber sound very flat, tiny and dull. Kind of withdrawn and hold back. The Magnapan is also sounding tiny and withdrawn with a hollow image. Maybe those two need a bigger amplifier and shine in another set up but not here. In the first song the differences are the biggest. In the following songs the gap get smaller but still the huge foundation of the Martin Logan win it for me. My experience with Martin Logan is that the bass is less present than in this video and it's a pity there is no mention of the exact speakers that are used. Martin Logan and Sonus Faber built bigger speakers that put put a bigger sound stage which would give a better comparison to the Magnapand on relation of a big sounddtage

Maggie’s are amazing. Obviously they are very close to the wall and there’s no sub. So MLS seem to have e a fuller sound with deeper bass. Maggie’s setup properly with a fast sub is awesome

ML is the best, it seems to create the immediacy esp with vocals. Depth is realistic. Maggies are next and here you notice low/mid mud. The sound stage is wider, but looses on the depth. Last is the Sonus and really sounds terrible compared to the two. It has more width, but seems to the phasey type. This one has some harshness as well.

hearing wood in that first song snare stab is unreal on magnepan. I will test that song on my system tomorrow to compare :)
I would try everything again with 2/3 of the floor covered in medium carpet, but that's just me.
I would chopse logans because they don't seem fatigueing in this setup.
    thanx for vid
