1990’s 30 hp Evinrude - Why you should always use Stabilized Fuel

My customer contacted me asking for service on this 1990’s 30 hp Evinrude outboard. The owner did provide great information about what he was experiencing when attempting to start this motor.
Billy, the owner told me he has tried spraying starting fluid into the carb and did get it to fire but immediately died after starting. He also stated that he did not use fuel stabilizer and that the fuel was almost a year old in the tank.
Since the fuel contained ethanol it had phase shifted and became stale and unusable. The carb had to be cleaned and adjusted with the fuel lines purged of all stale fuel before being able to run again.
The lesson here is if you are going to use fuel containing ethanol you must use stabilizer or you will have starting/running issues and require a carb overhaul especially if you allow the fuel to age even a few months. Fuel with ethanol can last up to a year or longer if you use stabilizer.
