What I love about this video is being able to actually see inside the store at a time when Ames was still going strong. There's lots of videos of people visiting the few abandoned Ames that are left but seeing actual footage of when the store was still in business with fully stocked shelves is something that you will never see again. If you really put your imagination to it you can almost feel like the store is still there in a way

I remember waiting to be checked out at our local Ames was excruciating. There could be one person in front of you, but it would take forever. It was as if everything was in super slow motion.😵‍💫

I grew up with Ames and Caldor's. Back in the day, it was no different to shopping at Walmart today. If you can imagine that, you can get a good idea of how popular they were in their prime.

I love how I'm just casually sitting here, eating my dinner, and watching some Ames asset protection training videos from 1996! I can imagine the new hires watching this 27 years ago and being bored out of their minds!!

It's hard to find these training videos and for some reason I love watching them. Thanks for posting these, makes me want to relive the 90's department store experience at the age I am now.

"Ames crisis manual" ...does that include tips on bankruptcy?

If you work retail... it’s never a “quiet period” where you can actually do any of this 🤣

Back in the day, when this video was made, retailers actually cared about these things and gave us time to properly run the stores. That was before “bottom-of-the-barrel” companies like Walmart came in and put these good retailers out of business. Walmart has done so much to destroy everything that was good about America in the 80’s and 90’s.

Not just America. China, Mexico & Canada too. & they wanna just buy out the whole Australian Market too except Target.

yeah.. people would evacuate in an orderly manner. That didn't happen when a store had to be evacuated near me to due to a nearby business fire, they almost had to be dragged out.

I pulled my shoulder at work while running between registers and trying to bag as fast as I could. We were so busy and my store director was no help and would just yell at you to go faster! This video is funny because it’s like “DONT LIFT OR GO TOO FAST!” And management is like “MOVE IT!!!!!!!” 😂😂😂 my shoulder is mostly healed, I’ll always have some sort of issue with it, but I’m thankful it wasn’t a worse injury than it was!

Safety first, but that didn't stop the chain from going out of business. This store kept having a lot of safety issues, even though there were few, or no customers. :/

I guess since it was 1996 they didn't need to also address safety strategies in the event of a mass shooting.

Worked in a similar type of establishment and when we got bored we broke open bags of mothballs and let them loose all over the store.

I vaguely remember Ames. I also remember a department store called James-way. We’re these stores related? I also remember a department store called Clovers from the 1990s. Stores like this seem to have all gone away due to heavy competition from Walmart and Target.
