Oh dear. I work retail and this is gold. I have a weird thing for terrible training videos, especially vintage ones. Thank you to whoever preserves these.
Ahh Ames, I remember going here with my grandpa back when before they closed. He said this was the BEST store near him because they had the most items that he used and he didn’t have to drive 2+ hours to get to Kmart. When they went out, he said there will never be another Ames, he was right! This brings back memories 😭❤️
I worked at Ames as a kid. Just long enough for the playstation 2 launch. We all hid a console for ourselves and rang them out at the end of our shifts. That was a good night.
I remember going to Ames in the 80's. Listening to my parents put things on layaway that never came home. At least layaway gave me thoughts of imagination to having a toy.
RJ FD from what I’ve heard, today in California if you steal less than like 900 worth of stuff at a time, they won’t prosecute...or at least that’s how it is in San Francisco, CA.
Observation windows like the one at 3:29 were very common in discount department stores back in the day. I wonder why today’s stores, such as Walmart and Target, do not have these windows.
I remember watching an earlier version of this video many, many, many years ago. This particular video was taped in a converted Zayre store. Since the cashiers are scanning items, I would guess this video is from the early 1990s, as scanning was added to the registers about a year after the initial Zayre conversion.
I had cops called on me for "Flim Flam". They ended up having to explain to a poorly-trained cashier that it's perfectly honest when somebody "overpays" in coins to get even fewer coins back. I had $2.18 Kiwi boot laces. I give the cashier a $20, but also asked to break a quarter .18/.25 instead of eighty two cents in coins banging about. The cops were decent; poor cops had to "train" the cashier to comprehend that 2/20 + 18/25=less coins when I'm in beach trunks and a Dead Pool Tshirt.
Kid in the back row after getting his first job he didn't want. "Mannnnnnnnnnnnn...fuck the company, and their assets!" "All right, who is the damn flim flam artist that said that?!?!? Out! OUT!!!!"
Please continue to hold. The service desk will take your call as soon as our line has dissipated. If this is an actual emergency such as a armed robbery at your register, please continue to hold as we will take your call once our line had dissipated.
@@pl5624 man that's great news, means my chances of being hired sounds pretty good. I'd sure like to make it up the corporate ladder to work at their corporate offices. Have you checked out the video of Ames Corporate facilities?

OMG..I have gone down the rabbit hole of bad training video's and can't get out. It's all that comes up now. And this video obviously didn't work, Ames has been gone for years!
My Ames went out in 2002 my mom worked there and they did it care about stealing cause people did it all the time Hills department store really did it care about stealing cause she worked there to
I think these were all on the same tape, not separate tapes. It would be nice if you could upload the full length video now that TH-cam allows longer videos. I see this current upload was from 13 years ago, back when all videos had to be under 10 minutes.
It is still running! my old retail job used the same company with the same number. They called it “the hotline” nice name lol! I’ve never called it, but have heard of employees who had!! My job was union but also had the hotline as another option….
Yes they were primarily east coast from New England ( where the company started ) down to Georgia and west to Indiana. They originally. started in New England and went as far south as Maryland. In 1985 they bought out Murphy's Mart stores and more than doubled their locations instantly. Murphy's started in Pittsburgh PA and expanded to the south and midwest. In 1987 they bought Zayre's stores and almost doubled their locations again. They simply bit off more than they could chew and eventually went bankrupt.

Imagine sitting in prison and telling your cellmate that you're an "Ames flim-flam operator."
And then he tells you to “operate” his “film-flam”.

'Shrink' - also affects men, in cold water
Yes, significant shrinkage!
Man, who needs TV when you have old employee training videos?
2:45 plot twist: the store detective is the mastermind of the thefts in the store. He steals the most
You're right. Internal theft is far greater than external theft. Especially with LP managers
One of our associates has been accused of being a flim flam operator. As a result, we had to cut off his hands.
I love these, they're so cozy.
I worked at Ames as a kid. Just long enough for the playstation 2 launch. We all hid a console for ourselves and rang them out at the end of our shifts. That was a good night.
I just called this number to report theft at Ames lol
Same here. I was kept on hold forever. Apparently Michael's uses the number now lol.

should've given the cashiers guns to fire back at the robbers.

Lmao 😂 more like someone was overspending in the family. Or didn’t 💰 taxes.
Funny frickin stuff
they might be coming back so those who want to work for ames with have to go to this training video it will teach how to be a good employee
asset protection and you made $5 per hour lol.
Yes sir, I did that for them in the early 90s. Tackling people outside for peanuts
The guy that does the voiceover narration sounds exactly like the Modern Marvels guy from the History Channel.

Anthony Bourdain doing the flim flam back before he learned how to cook
lowkey the store detective looks like the kind of guy to hand cuff chicks in the back room until they give him their home address and phone number.
I don't get taping the ends of a larger bill to a smaller one. So they have to cut the large bill up first....what's the point?

If an armed robbery occurs at your register, make sure you retrieve the weapon from the bad boy before any products are damaged.
