let's be fair...this is not the first recent Malibu that people actually want to buy. the 08-12 car was fantastic and showed that GM was serious about engineering again and not just making money.
+jon368100 Except that it was really plasticky inside and had some issues like visibility and a small trunk opening. It also wasn't the most reliable car out there.
+jon368100 That is fair. The '08 Malibu was a really good car for its time, people forget what the competition was like the same year. The 2013 model was a retrograde step.
Drive571 I know exactly what the competition was like, and cars like the Accord, Altima, and Camry had nicer interiors. The Camry's was also relatively crappy but still a notch above the Malibu's. (Now if you want to compare the Fusion and the Sebring, well....) An all-hard-plastic door panel even in top trim levels is a serious let-down. But what I did forget to mention and which is true is that the car did DRIVE beautifully--I'd argue it drove better and more quietly than the cars I've mentioned above, except that it was underpowered. It also had a couple of stupid problems which they never bothered addressing during its run (the intermediate steering shaft and the door lock actuators), not to mention the most ridiculous headlight bulb change of any car I am aware of.
+Maestro_T I love the 2011 Malibu LT I bought my mother and I think it rides better than the brand new 2015 Camry SE I recently took on a road trip. The Malibu does feel under powered but I could live with it. It's also so much more quiet than the new Camry at freeway speeds. As for the headlights I had a lunatic rant on Chevrolets FB page. Had to change the headlights while on work in Phoenix, sitting in a parking lot at 10pm at night whe it was 108 degrees out trying to take the bumper off the car to change the headlights... I was so pissed!
DJR5280 No idea how you changed them at all. I've seen a video and also a web site that showed it step-by-step. I'm a bit handy with small repairs but I think I would throw my hands up at that one. I have a car (Mazda 3) which goes through headlamps constantly so I guess it terrifies me to buy a car where I'd have the prospect of having to pay $200 (or whatever) each time the bulbs go out. I'm surprised at the new Camry being loud on the highway. My uncle owns a 2007 Camry, I'm not really very fond of it though he has had very little go wrong with it. How has your mother's Malibu held up?
Guys he was showing us the basic Malibu the interior looks actually quiet nice on the trims above the base and choose the tan or Carmel interior those look very nice
Turbos are needed to meet the fuel economy standards that have been set by the former President and the EPA. Turbos are a good way to make additional horsepower to motivate the vehicle.
I got a little part time job, driving rental cars from one location to another. The Malibu LT, has become one of my favorites. But the Passat has quietly become my favorite.
My Honda Accord has better HIGH QUALITY steering & agility quickness than that rental car quality Malibu it's too big now with that small car engine NOT BETTER too strained to last
I looked at the 2015 Malibu before purchasing a Camry XSE (2015) 4 cylinder. I didn't take it out for a test drive as I just didn't like the interior all that much and as an aging model I wasn't given a fantastic discount when I asked about pricing. Looked @ the Accord but to get leather navigation and pushbutton start it was about $2,000 more than the Camry (albeit it seemed like a slightly better car). I hope this car gets a warm welcome and good reviews. I think to get anywhere it needs to be a bit better and slightly cheaper than its Japanese competitors.
I bought a loaded 2016 Malibu hybrid last month for use in commuting. Very pleased with the ride, interior trappings & appearance, quiet cabin, quick pick up, and space. Sharp looking, too. Getting 40-42 mpg in mixed driving conditions. (It takes 87 octane.) I do wonder why the battery capacity dips so low when the car sites, and rarely shows above half capacity when driven, even in the high regen L mode.
Well, it'd be awfully nice of you professionals at Consumer Reports to show the redesign done in late 2013 to the front end that made the previous-generation Malibu look quite a bit better.
The 2014 MY update also brought along a larger rear seat, more efficient 2.5L I4 with Variable Valve Lift & Stop/Start, a more potent 2.0t engine, some new interior bits, and suspension updates.
It may be a big step forward for the model, but this probably makes it just competitive for the segment. When you consider what else is out there - Accord, Camry, Fusion, well, this is ok.
+elton john GM seemed to be on the right track with the Impala but didn't get it quite right here. The fact of the matter is that they can't just produce something that's "as good" as the competition to increase their sales and their brand image. They have to make something better. This is what Toyota and Honda did back in the day and it's what GM/Ford/Chrysler need to do now. Can it be said they have caught up? That may be debatable. But they need to surpass.
I've rented the new Malibu and it is very nice. I found though that the Malibu LT, fills more solid than the Malibu LS. It looks good on the outside, it is very quiet, it handles better than an Accord or Optima. Only issue is the stop/start technology. It will drive you crazy when you are sitting at a light. So I had to learn to creep towards stoplights, so it wouldn't shut down. Also, when it does shut down on a hot day, you immediately feel the air conditioner, losing its cool. The 2.0T version feels a heck of a lot better than the 1.6T version
I didnt think about it but that would explain why the cruze was so slow to get going at first. The LS Malibu was ready to jump as soon as i touched the gas and didnt shut off like that
Yesterday I went to see the '16 Malibu. The only one at the dealership was a 2LT stickered at $29,000.The interior was so cheap with its hard plasic everywhere and awful cloth seats, there is no way it will attain large volume any way but fleet sales. I declined a test drive as there was no way I would ever feel proud owning this car.
+Steve W You must be going to the scammiest car dealership on the planet, then, because every 2016 Malibu 2LT I've seen (avg. cost between $26,750 and $28,500 here) has the leatherette seating and fairly decent interior material quality. I don't get into my Chevy Malibu expecting Audi materials, and you shouldn't either, at any rate. It's a family sedan, and it does what it needs to do even better than the previous generation did, which did its job better than the generation before that. My point? Each generation improves on the strengths AND weaknesses of the past generation.
+Heartagram Yeah and overtime the VW interiors don't hold up well. Stupid problems like the insturment clusters going, paint rubbing of switches, trim pieces needed replaced within a year. Just because it feels better doesn't mean it is.
Aegys TierOne if you moved into on coming traffic or hit somthing that wasnt moving. you deserve what happens, vehicles arent toys. LOOK AT THE FUCKING ROAD!!!
+pedrof830 Never see 200 rentals.Just rented a Camry SE 2015 last week. All they have is Altimas, Camrys and I believe Fusions. It was Hertz by the way. Not a small rental company.
Chevy has lost my business. I still have and enjoy my 2008 Malibu LT2 with a 3.6 V6. 273 HP, 6 speed, paddle shifters and a good stereo system with xm satellite radio. Now there is 4 cylinder engines in 3500lb cars, fussy infotainment systems and a pricier base price than either the Camry or Accord.
In 9 years technology has come a long way. The 2017 Malibu Premier 2.0 turbo with the 9 speed automatic weights in at almost 3200 pounds. The car can hit 0 to 60 in 5.3 seconds and turn the quarter mile at 14.3 at almost 100 mph with a top speed drag limited at 153 mph. Sorry, but this car will out run your 3.6 as it does my 2014 Impala with the 3.6 with the 6 speed automatic.
LOL CR! What basic trim level car doesn't look and feel like a rental car inside? They act surprised at this. The Camry LE also looks and feels rental grade with it's cheap plastic hub caps and cheap gray interior and wafer thin headliner1
The temperature will be the same or 1 degree different as when you turned on the app. If anyone needs to know the exact temperature +/- 1 degree at all times, they need to buy a separate thermometer to install themselves. Solved that problem. Can't solve the little kink in the chrome going down the c pillar though...it looks odd.
Stop using the term "rental car" to describe the characteristics of a vehicle. It is an insult to the Rental Car industry which strives to provide reliable and save vehicles for customers everyday!
I just test drove this car yesterday and I was not excited at all. Rental was just about what I felt while driving it. More so I described it like driving a K car from the 80's. My current 15 Malibu is better to look at and has a more solid built feel to it.
It's too bad that the bowtie is weirdly placed. If they moved it up infront of the top grill or even right above that, it would make the front look so much better
Currently my 2006 Camry SE is in the shop being repaired due to an accident, so I am driving a 2016 Malibu LT rental. Although Chevy has gone a long way, and it is better built than previous Chevy's I have driven, my 10 year old Camry with over 100K is still way better from a driving and quality perspective. The only time I would really want to drive this car is if I am renting, and my choice is between this and a Chrysler 200...which absolutely sucks. Can't wait to get my Camry back
+DJR5280 It's actually a 2015, I thought it was a 2016. it looks pretty much the same as the one in this video except it's black. it is OK to rent, would never want to own it
Mirz_786 The 2015 and 2016 are very very different both in and out. I've driven a 2015 for a week and just rented a 2015 Camry SE when I drove from Denver to Phoenix a few weeks ago. The Camry was not as solid or refined as the Malibu. The Camry powertrain was more noisy and had a whine sound to it like a CVT. The Malibu was more quiet at highway speeds as well. All in all the Malibu is a better car except for the stop start feature which I hate. I would still take the Camry as the current bodystyle looks more modern than the Malibu and the interior is more modern than the Malibu.
people here ranting about the malibu South American market gets the crappy onix/prisma, spin, cobalt (not the same as us cobalt), spark (the daewoo badged), and aveo we are lucky if they put 2 airbags, and the A pillar doesn't bend at a fender bender
I'll stick with Hyundai. '89 Excell was O.K. A few problems here and there , but easy to fix. Got wrecked at 101K miles.' 99 Accent minor problems. Again, easily fixed. Still driving it at 164K miles. Getting ready to do its 3rd timing belt . 2010 Accent , not a days trouble except for the dealer needing it back for 2 updates. 50K miles on that one. 2013 Sonata is my business car . One recall to replace a transmission cable clip and an update to the Bluetooth system. 52K on that one. Oh , did I mention that except for warranty, I do my own maintenance and repair ?
No, not the same model. This model is not being released to rental fleets. Only the Malibu Limited is going to fleet sales. Nice try, but the BS doesn't fly.
Here you say that an american brand (Ford) finally did a great mid size car which is also fun to drive. No they didn't. Ford USA finally makes good cars since it started working together with Ford Europe. They couldn't by themselves.
+Riccardo Vigato American cars were built the way they were because Americans don't need cramped, rough riding, unreliable cars. Ford built that car because Europeans are taking over the US and they push their own taste on the consumers. None of the new cars you can drive thousand miles at one sitting and feel unexhausted like you do in a good old Lincoln.
$34,000? umm thats more than Camry XSE with the more safety gear including pre-collision and they have the V-6, ENTUNE, push start and ETC, and the Malibu JUST started being reliable,,GM is getting WAY too confident in their pricing LMAO
+95thRiflesOCI They start at 22,000 MSRP. MSRP you should never pay, usually the price you pay should be LESS then what the factory says. Back in the day Hyundai's were costing $3,000 USD to be manufactured but when they hit the US Dealers, they were charging $12k to $14k for the "car that was supposed to be CHEAP".
95thRiflesOCI The new Highlander our neighbor bought, its damn expensive. I would go for the Hyundai Tuscon 2016 model. The new one is very nice. You in the army by your name?
What's amazing to me is how an import that were laughed at in their earlier debut in America(circa 60-70's)Honda & Toyota is now the measuring stick for functionality, comfort, design & reliability. How come theygot it right & yrs later American car makers are just catching up?! Isn't that ironic to say the least?
gm can copy Hyundai and Kia , but their warranty is much shorter since the quality of parts is cheaper. expect to spend as much money or more than what you "saved" when you buy gm with rebates and 20% off msrp deals that retail dealers advertise.
+John R Scorsese What? Have you ever owned a Hyundai or Kia? That 10-year warranty is almost worthless and covers almost nothing. GM has a fairly competitive warranty for being a middle-of-the-road auto manufacturer, and I assure you that they'll actually honor it.
I just bought one of these, and it is likely the last GM car I am ever going to buy built after 1993. they're engineers and designers getting more and more retarded every year, and I'm convinced they are getting them out of drug rehab these days, because you have to be smoking crack with some of the thought processes evident here. I would give the car about a 4.5 out of 5, but there are a number of small things about this car that were not thought out that drive me absolutely insane.
Great job Chevrolet. Now us mechanics will have to replace engine and turbos by the dozens=fat wallet $$$$$$ The 2.2 ecotecs gave us lots of work. I used to hate American cars till I realized that I made a living from them.
I would not spend $28,000 or $35,000 hours for a Chevrolet Malibu! The car will be worth around $10,000 who's in the next 4 years as opposed to a similarly priced Camry which would still be worth at least 15 or 16. The Camry or the Accord will most likely last a lot longer as well since GM can't seem to build a car with a decent fit and finish or a car interior that can hold up over the years.. my friend has a 2013 Malibu with less than 50k miles on it and the interior squeaks and rattles more than my 18 year old Camry with almost 400k does.
A cheap Mazda 6 copy! Not a Chevy. Will buy a Gen. 8 anytime before I touch this....Gen. 9And so will many in the coming months......just watch........The sales of the Gen 8 Malibu Limited will exceed the sales of the new Gen. 9.
One would expect an impovement after the billion dollar Government Motors bailout. At the end of the day, its still a Chevy/GM. Don't be fooled by the pretty wrapping. Like a beautiful woman, it can be superficial.
Don't ever buy GM. Various mechanical pieces are likely to break when you hit around 40000 miles. And that is the point beyond the bumper to bumper warranty. Terrible resale value. Research on the interenet. Also if you are in the market for a new car, don't watch reviews like these on youtube. They just review what can be seen with the eyes like the quality of the plastic in the interior. Most of the things in a car that matter in a car like mechanical reliability and trustworthiness of a brand cannot be seen with eyes and are not touched on by these poor youtube reviewers. Go to sites like consumeraffairs or car complaints to assess the long term reliability of a car. Watch youtube reviews only to pass the time. Don't make a decision based on these. You're going to regret it.
Malibus from 2008 to 2012 were the cars with more recalls in american history, terrible terrible cars quality from GM. They touched bottom and from that experience GM has tried hard to improve but not hard enough. The decent Malibu (2.0, leather, etc.) price competes with Toyota Camry which is wayyyy much better in every sense. The small Malibu, 1.5 engine, I mean you don't do much with that engine, even the Ford Fusion Hybrid has more hp (188) than this small Malibu (160).....not a convincing car at all.
Looks just like every other Hyundai on the road. Boring. Nothing new or exciting. Maybe if they made a diesel electric hybrid I'd be interested. Or at least enter the 21st century and put LED bulbs in your tail lights.
John Noonan "What are you talking about?" Promoting European cars. "Neither the Honda Accord or Chevy Malibu are European cars" Exactly! However Honda Accord is the best seller behind Toyota Camry and better car than any European junk. Now, observe; Chevy Malibu is presented as "An American car with European feel" just like many other American cars that is considered lesser brands to European cars. If this Malibu is more pleasant than a Honda Accord, then Honda Accord is even lesser to European junk or a even lesser than a "wanna be European" car. In fact this Malibu and Honda Accord are both better cars than European cars. However you will never hear a comment as that "Malibu is a more pleasant car than a VW Jetta" Even though VW screwed Americans real good. By the way, beyond the European issue Malibu is not more pleasant than a Honda Accord anyway. For someone who is claiming such a thing there should be an ulterior motive.
John Noonan “You lost me” I never thought I found you to lose. “I don't see any connection to European cars in what he said” I know. Don’t worry you will never be able to anyway. Just sit back and relax and consider me as someone who speaks absurd things. “He simply compared the Malibu to the Accord.” Yes, and I wasted my time complete trying to explain what I said an why, because you obviously know better.
Fussinated You might be reading too deeply into the review. I think your original claim was that CR gets paid off by European car manufacturers to promote their cars. I don't understand that statement. Look at CR's ratings for midsized sedans; the VW Passat models rank low: 12th and 16th on that list out of 20. Ranks 1-11 are from Asian or American manufacturers. And CR has published reports detailing the VW emissions cheating scandal. I don't understand your claim that CR is secretly promoting European cars like Volkswagen. CR ripped on the disappointing Mercedes CLA. The VW Golf scores CR's lowest possible rating in reliability.
2016 nissan maxima is reliable and faster than this ugly car boring looks and cheap front end..get the nissan maxima its faster and lighter..its solid and awesome X TRONIC SPORT TUNED CVT is smooth and always in the powerband..

This car needs a V6.
pablo aracena No normally aspirated V6 makes 295 lb-ft of torque that the 2.0T does!
pablo aracena no is more then v6 9 speed
the previous Malibu was a good looking car I saw this one in person I was like wow it looks great

So true... I got the car while I was in Orlando.
We need more videos from you Tom. very informative and longer than a min from other car sites
What's with the turbos? Just make a solid regular four-cylinder and V6!

Let's see if this can beat the Camry at its own game. I honestly think it might...
Definitely won't beat a Camry when it comes to reliability.
Malibu is discontinued after 2024 while Camry is entering a new generation.
I like it, wish GM would stick with the LTZ moniker instead of that premier crap.
I agree, not to mention all the huge Chevy badges plastered all over the car. If I wasn't leasing, I'd get out the blow dryer and floss:)
Are these reliable
This is a very nice redesign but I refuse to buy a GM product. Having it as a rental is more than I will allow.
How about the Hybrid?

I suppose vice-versa. Malibu 2 (2017
Rental grade??? All cars are rental grade if you choose. My wife has this and she loves it. 1.5 litre hwy mileage 44-45 .
U guys start doing killer reviews
Sexy car from the outside but center stack is a vanilla
It is really hard to choose this chevy over the Toyota camry
people here ranting about the malibu
South American market gets the crappy onix/prisma, spin, cobalt (not the same as us cobalt), spark (the daewoo badged), and aveo
we are lucky if they put 2 airbags, and the A pillar doesn't bend at a fender bender
+brunoignaciogi You probably don't pay the same prices either.
cars aren't cheaper in spite of this things.
compared to u.s. price, Americans get really good cars
Sorry to hear that.
Thank you
I'll stick with Hyundai.
+Bjorn Ironsides Except for those who own American cars and get more miles vertically than horizontally.
No Plug-in. No cigar
To me Malibu is a small car and even Impala is a medium car.I wish they made the Impala 215 inches long but I may still buy the 201 inch version
Its' hybrid vs the Accord new hybrid in cost will determine a lot for us!
Had a Malibu rental last year, the front seats were so uncomfortable. Less than one hour into our three hours drive, our bum and back starts to hurt.
Well this one is different
Taraje JT if it is not, then it will end up being the car that no one wants in a rental parking lot. again.
+nickolastiguan We're talking about a different model.
bruce mcdonald same model, hopefully better seats and everything else.
No, not the same model. This model is not being released to rental fleets. Only the Malibu Limited is going to fleet sales. Nice try, but the BS doesn't fly.
love it
Excuse me but did this guy just say that the one he's driving is the top of the line? "Ahem no LED's" the corolla has standard LEDs
Let’s Burn One -There are internal LEDs all throughout. But headlights are conventional and dim
Yes, the Premier variant with the 2.0 turbo is overpriced. The 1.5 is sufficient for most driving needs except very hilly regions.
and once you give that 1.5 a little gas, its goin get thursty due to the work load
Wow, an American car. I'm gonna faint.
+J Segal WOW! A comment about an American car by a hater ........ I will puke.
I don't hate- I LOVE! i love the Malibu, GM, this video and even Consumer Reports. But they spend a lot of time talking about the German Companies.
Fussinated haha u puked.
+Fussinated No shit, along with car and driver, road and track, ect.....
Wow they are more expensive then camry's.
TekReview's was buying a SUV 2 years ago and the Hyundai Santa Fe XL was more expensive then the highlander. I was so shock.
95thRiflesOCI The new Highlander our neighbor bought, its damn expensive. I would go for the Hyundai Tuscon 2016 model. The new one is very nice. You in the army by your name?
57
95thRiflesOCI Malibu has about $10,000 off MSRP that No Japanese can match.
No
2018 Malibu 2.0T can be had for $22K!
2015 Malibu
gm can copy Hyundai and Kia , but their warranty is much shorter since the quality of parts is cheaper. expect to spend as much money or more than what you "saved" when you buy gm with rebates and 20% off msrp deals that retail dealers advertise.
+John R Scorsese What? Have you ever owned a Hyundai or Kia? That 10-year warranty is almost worthless and covers almost nothing. GM has a fairly competitive warranty for being a middle-of-the-road auto manufacturer, and I assure you that they'll actually honor it.
👍🏻
now will it age well 😕
He never even looked at the road😒😒😒
Infotainment system lags
I just bought one of these, and it is likely the last GM car I am ever going to buy built after 1993. they're engineers and designers getting more and more retarded every year, and I'm convinced they are getting them out of drug rehab these days, because you have to be smoking crack with some of the thought processes evident here. I would give the car about a 4.5 out of 5, but there are a number of small things about this car that were not thought out that drive me absolutely insane.
what were they?
rental fleet again.
look likes new accord...
+Komang Ariantha chevy wishes.
I was behind one of these today and the back looks dated already. Another one for the cheap rental cars!
Kip Paseo $10,000 is the discount on Malibu and most Chevys today. Would that make you buy one?
A cheap Mazda 6 copy! Not a Chevy. Will buy a Gen. 8 anytime before I touch this....Gen. 9And so will many in the coming months......just watch........The sales of the Gen 8 Malibu Limited will exceed the sales of the new Gen. 9.
Never spend that kind dough for a 14k car. Go to the lot and get it for half the Effin price
One would expect an impovement after the billion dollar Government Motors bailout. At the end of the day, its still a Chevy/GM. Don't be fooled by the pretty wrapping. Like a beautiful woman, it can be superficial.
to much price ,Government must support American infrastructures with tax cut to produce nice and low cost .
the rear look boring
That car is f not WORTH it half used brand new
Looks just like every other Hyundai on the road. Boring.
Nothing new or exciting. Maybe if they made a diesel electric hybrid I'd be interested. Or at least enter the 21st century and put LED bulbs in your tail lights.
meh....
More pleasant than a Honda Accord? How much did Europeans pay you to make that reference? Consumer Reports = European favoritism in America.
What are you talking about? Neither the Honda Accord or Chevy Malibu are European cars.
John Noonan
"What are you talking about?"
Promoting European cars.
"Neither the Honda Accord or Chevy Malibu are European cars"
Exactly! However Honda Accord is the best seller behind Toyota Camry and better car than any European junk.
Now, observe;
Chevy Malibu is presented as "An American car with European feel" just like many other American cars that is considered lesser brands to European cars.
Fussinated You lost me. I don't see any connection to European cars in what he said. He simply compared the Malibu to the Accord.
John Noonan
“You lost me”
I never thought I found you to lose.
“I don't see any connection to European cars in what he said”
I know. Don’t worry you will never be able to anyway. Just sit back and relax and consider me as someone who speaks absurd things.
“He simply compared the Malibu to the Accord.”
Yes, and I wasted my time complete trying to explain what I said an why, because you obviously know better.
Ford stands for Found On Road Dead i would never own a ford period!
2016 nissan maxima is reliable and faster than this ugly car boring looks and cheap front end..get the nissan maxima its faster and lighter..its solid and awesome X TRONIC SPORT TUNED CVT is smooth and always in the powerband..
They copied AUDI and the NEW Chrysler 200.
if you find a malibu attractive you need your eyes examined.. front is hideous like a camry.
I don't like it, it's ugly
+Eskimopride07 .....How is that car ugly? Actually it's quite stylish; you obviously have a decided bias against GM and the Malibu.
Chevy really needs to learn how to design cars. God, that thing is ugly.
