Dr. Ali Ataie discusses Isaiah 53, and James and Paul

  • Dr. Ali Ataie discusses two topics:
    1. Isaiah 53. He explains how Jewish exegetes have dealt with this passage. Who could the Suffering Servant be according to the Jews? And how do the Christian arguments fail?
    2. James the Brother of Jesus and the Apostle Paul. Dr. Ali presents a narrative history of how we went from Jesus to Muhammad. This includes explaining the early, post-apostolic, and modern conflicts between proto-Islam/Islam and proto-orthodox/trinitarian Christianity. He touches upon the Nazarenes, Ebionites, and the patristics and how all of these things relate to the Quran's Christology.
*For further reading I strongly recommend: The Brother of Jesus and the Lost Teachings of Christianity www.amazon.co....
Dr. Ali Ataie is a scholar of biblical hermeneutics with field specialties in Sacred Languages, Comparative Theology, and Comparative Literature. At Zaytuna College, Dr. Ataie has taught Arabic, Creedal Theology, Comparative Theology, Sciences of the Quran, Introduction to the Qur’an, and Seminal Ancient Texts. He received his PhD in Cultural and Historical Studies in Religion from the Graduate Theological Union. Dr. Ataie is a native Persian speaker and can read and write Arabic, Hebrew, and Greek.

Did i just get a bucket of knowledge poured on me? This is a very detailed discussion of things i have never known about! It's so interesting and entertaining. I never knew Jesus had a literal brother, James. It's just like Aaron who supported Moses.
Great to see Dr Ali Ataie back in the channel. Appreciate the explanation on Isaiah 53 but it seems to be a contentious topic. Thank you Paul for getting guests for discussions in the pursuit of knowledge and truth. Keep on keeping on man!

Then He turned to the heaven while it was smoke and said to it and to the earth, "Come [into being], willingly or by compulsion." They said, "We have come willingly."
(and said to it and to the earth: "Come willingly or unwillingly.'') meaning, `respond to My command and be subjected to this action, willingly or unwillingly.'
This command addressed to the earth and sky and their compliant and obedient reply is an expression for the readiness of the earth and the sky to comply with every order from Allah Almighty. Nothing here is about a 'contracting universe' !
The Quran on the Origin of the Universe:
The science of modern cosmology, observational and theoretical, clearly indicates that, at one point in time, the whole universe was nothing but a cloud of ‘smoke’ (i.e. an opaque highly dense and hot gaseous composition). This is one of the undisputed principles of standard modern cosmology. Scientists now can observe new stars forming out of the remnants of that ‘smoke’
A new star forming out of a cloud of gas and dust (nebula), which is one of the remnants of the ‘smoke’ that was the origin of the whole universe. (The Space Atlas, Heather and Henbest, p. 50.)
The Lagoon nebula is a cloud of gas and dust, about 60 light years in diameter. It is excited by the ultraviolet radiation of the hot stars that have recently formed within its bulk. (Horizons, Exploring the Universe, Seeds, plate 9, from Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc.)
The illuminating stars we see at night were, just as was the whole universe, in that ‘smoke’ material. God has said in the Quran:
Then He turned to the heaven when it was smoke... (Quran, 41:11)
Because the earth and the heavens above (the sun, the moon, stars, planets, galaxies, etc.) have been formed from this same ‘smoke,’ we conclude that the earth and the heavens were one connected entity. Then out of this homogeneous ‘smoke,’ they formed and separated from each other. God has said in the Quran:
Have not those who disbelieved known that the heavens and the earth were one connected entity, then We separated them?... (Quran, 21:30)
Dr. Alfred Kroner is one of the world’s renowned geologists. He is Professor of Geology and the Chairman of the Department of Geology at the Institute of Geosciences, Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz, Germany. He said: “Thinking where Muhammad came from . . . I think it is almost impossible that he could have known about things like the common origin of the universe, because scientists have only found out within the last few years, with very complicated and advanced technological methods, that this is the case.” Also he said: “Somebody who did not know something about nuclear physics fourteen hundred years ago could not, I think, be in a position to find out from his own mind, for instance, that the earth and the heavens had the same origin.”
      ____________
      Footnotes:
The Arabic word for “smoke” in the above verse is “dukhanun,” which describes the hot, cosmic smoke in question. This word in the Qur’an, in pinpoint fashion, describes this smoke very accurately for it is a warm body of gas containing mobile particles connected to solid substances. Here, the Qur’an has employed the most appropriate word from the Arabic language for describing the appearance of this phase of the universe. Let us note that only in the 20th century have scientists discovered that the universe emerged from a hot gas in the form of smoke

May Allah protect you and reward you for your sincere endeavour for the benefit of the lay people, particularly our brainwashed Christians brothers and sisters and all people of God including to certain extend Muslims if only from knowledge perspective.

The key to understanding Isaiah 53 and who/what it’s about is in the first line which says: “to whom has the Arm of the Lord been revealed”
What does it mean by ‘the Arm of the Lord’?
Throughout scripture we see reference to Gods ‘’mighty Arm’ or his ‘Right Arm’ which refers to Gods power/strength - but if we take a closer look at the text, the Arm of the Lord is actually a distinct ‘entity’ or ‘person’ for lack of better word. The Angel of YHVH is the Arm of the Lord, God’s presence manifested.
If we read Isaiah 40:10 it says:
“Behold, the Lord YHVH rules with might, and *His arm shall rule for him* , behold his reward is with him”
Pay particular attention to “His arm rules for him” this shows that the arm is the one that rules for YHVH, his own arm rules for him.
To be sure that the Arm is a distinctly identifiable ‘character’, we look to Isaiah 51,
      *Isaiah 51:9*
“Awake, awake, arm of the Lord,
 clothe yourself with strength!
Awake, as in days gone by,
 as in generations of old.
Was it not you who cut Rahab to pieces,
 who pierced that monster through?
Was it not you who dried up the sea,
the waters of the great deep,
who made a road in the depths of the sea
so that the redeemed might cross over?”
      Again, *Isaiah 63:12*
“ who sent his glorious arm of power
to be at Moses’ right hand,
who divided the waters before them,
to gain for himself everlasting renown”
Here, we see God sent his ‘Arm of power’ to be at Moses right hand - if we look back to the scriptures to see who was sent by Moses,
      *Exodus 23:20* says:
“Behold, I send my angel before you to keep you in the way and to bring you into the place which I have prepared. Beware of Him and obey His voice; do not provoke Him, for He will not pardon your transgressions; for My name is in Him”
Here we see that God is send an ‘Malak’ ahead of Moses to lead the way for him, so this is the right Arm being referred to in Isaiah 63:12, and remember, this Angel bare the divine name of YHVH which is why God says he can forgive sin, this is God’s very presence, his divine name carries his presence.
If we are In doubt about this ‘Malak’ (Angel/messenger) which is referred to as God’s ‘glorious arm of power’, *Exodus 33:14*
“The Lord replied, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”
So we see that God’s Angel that was sent to be at Moses’ side is the ‘glorious arm of power’ and ‘his presence’ according to Isaiah 63:12 and Exodus 33:14.
Further in Isaiah 63 it says
      *Isaiah 63:8-9*
“He said, “Surely they are my people,
 children who will be true to me”;
and so he became their Savior.
In all their distress he too was distressed,
and the angel of his presence saved them.”
So you see - the Arm of the Lord is the one that brings salvation, God’s very own arm… as it is written:
      *Psalm 98:1-2*
Oh, sing to the Lord a new song!
For He has done marvelous things;
His right hand and His holy arm have gained Him the victory.
      The Lord has made known His salvation;
His righteousness He has revealed in the sight of the gentiles (nations).

    Dear Paul
All credits go to you. Despite the fact that my best teacher has always been Sheikh Hamza Yusuf Mark Hanson, co-founder of Zaytuna College, I never knew they had such a giant of Ancient “Abrahamic” Sacred literature and languages like Dr. Ali Ataie. His Persian origins make him a more tolerant human being, and the fact that he can read and write Arabic, Hebrew, and Greek, makes him unique. I listened to the entire 2 hour-long broadcast, and both your knowledge is remarkable. Usually, I almost always find some fault somewhere, and this time I was in agreement 100% with him and you although my knowledge about the factual details of those sciences is quite limited.
Having said that, I wished Dr. Ali Ataie had also mentioned the Mithraic aspects or origins of Roman Christian-Pauline theology.
I “knew” the real name of James the Just was Jacob. The French translated James as Jacques. A sick and sickening habit of Westerners to translate proper names! I understood that the British Union Jack represents the Union of Israelites or Jacobites. All this is very confusing to the common believing Christian who belongs to countless denominations that are opposed to each other and even hate each other while preaching the same Bible they know very little about by design.
