2024 Subaru Impreza RS | When You Don't Want a Crosstrek

  • We take a quick spin in a 2024 Subaru Impreza RS. All new for 2024 the sixth generation Impreza drops the sedan and focuses on the fun to drive hatchback. The 2.5 liter 4-cylinder of the highest trim RS is the one to get as it scoots the little hatch with plenty of enthusiasm. Feature packed and with standard all wheel drive, Subaru has made the Impreza relevant again and a real option to the Civic, Corolla, and Mazda3 hatchbacks. Very similar to the outstanding Crosstrek, the Impreza RS offers a lower ride height and more car like sporty handling.

    Only had a few minutes with this RS, and while not all that sporty, it is really a great new product from Subaru. Lots of personality and super comfortable with loads of space. Let us know your thoughts and questions about Subaru’s all new sixth gen Impreza

    Unfortunately I think this car is just too far off the performance of a WRX for not that much less money. Unless you MUST have a hatchback, the WRX is the way to go.
    This car as tested may be in the low 30Ks (31K? 32K?), but a WRX starts AT that price with a manual (I was personally able to get a premium with STI short shifter for 32K) , and the CVT is a couple grand more than that at maybe $34K.
    But a CVT WRX, while perhaps $3K more than this Impreza, has nearly ONE HUNDRED more horsepower, a much better suspension setup, and will be a far more capable, satisfying car to drive and own.
    If you're willing to go manual, you can get a base WRX for $1-2K more than this car, and will be stepping into a proper sport sedan with 5 second 0-60 times and quarter mile in the high 13s.
    To me, this car ought to have a revised version of the BRZ 2.4. If it stayed N/A but had around 220HP to play with, it would be a perfect Civic Si/Elantra N Sport competitor with all the responsiveness benefits from an N/A motor. Unfortunately, as the BRZ engine is a co-development between them and Toyota, it's unlikely to ever happen despite how badly this impreza needs a 200+HP motor to be competitive in its space.

      Thanks for commenting. You make some great points. I think Subaru used the RS badging to bring some attention to the new gen Impreza. But it’s really just equivalent to the higher trim Crosstreks with the 2.5. The wrx would also benefit from a hatchback option. Thanks for watching and for the thoughtful comments.

      @@tpolerex7282 the CVT is not limited to the GT trim; it’s just that ALL GTs are CVT.
      The CVT is available in all the trims, which means you can get a CVT WRX in the low-mid 30s depending if you go base, premium, or limited.

      The WRX GT (sport CVT) is over $43k base, I got the loaded ‘24 RS for a bit over $31k before TTL, ~10% under MSRP. It’s not even close and I could have easily afforded the WRX but wanted a sport wagon/hatch. What I need and want in a car this RS excels at. I’m keeping my ultra low miles, very analog ‘02 WRX wagon for its more visceral, powerful driving style but this new RS easily out handles, has a stout af chassis and sublime ride, great throttle response, comfortable, great tech and ultra capable safety systems.

    So now the Impreza has as much power as a Civic 1.5T. it's already as big. Standard AWD. Cost less. Is this a Honda killer? I looked at the Corolla, Mazda 3 and civic sport touring. Toyota too small. Wife could not see out of the 3. So we spent to much on the Honda. Had this been available...
    I also noticed the subie dealerships around me are not marking up the inventory.

    • @BeyondTheTestDrive

      Agree that the Subie is interesting but maybe the price is a little high. Not as crisp a handler as the civic but has a nice comfortable ride and that all wheel drive.

      Was in the same position as you and your wife and went with this RS over the Mazda. I'm extremely happy with it, but I don't think you did wrong getting a clean Civic especially in this market. Hope you're liking it. 👍🏻

    As much as I like the non cladding on this car. It's kind of hard to justify buying this over the base WRX.

      Thanks for commenting. Yea, the other thing is that the WRX should be a hatchback.

      Can't afford to not have a hatchback in my line of work as a dog trainer. I love my new RS, but everyone is right to say the WRX should be offered in this new hatch redesign.

    All the RS is missing (besides the overdone cladding of the Crosstrek) is a 6-speed manual. Subaru came so close to having a real winner for enthusiasts, but were more concerned with fuel economy and cutting production costs.

    Is the 2.5RS engine just a bored or stroked FA20?

    • @BeyondTheTestDrive
      @BeyondTheTestDrive  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Subaru uses only the FB series now. The RS uses the same 2.5 found across their lineup. I think the stroke is the same in the FB20 and FB25 but the bore is different. But other than that they are they are similar. Hope that helps.

    Good review. It’s very cute. Can’t wait until cars like this are electric. Well, can only hope.

      Thanks for watching! Well that’s the problem. Smaller and cheaper cars need smaller batteries. While the smaller batteries will charge faster, denser urban housing and apartments just do not have the infrastructure. Smaller and cheaper cars llike an electric Impreza may have to wait out till the next generation of batteries.

      @@BeyondTheTestDrive Apartments are a problem. Houses need small, quick charging, batteries 😃. It’s the most efficient design & one that car makers should be chasing. Like the electric mini, only better

      @@philipcarroll2907 Hate to say it, but they are meant to be comfy. The Impreza was moved away from the WRX build within Subaru. Imprezas are just a normal every day good quality hatchback. If you would like something faster, either modify it all to your liking or buy a different model car. Imprezas have changed a lot over the past 25 years. And I say this as an Impreza owner.

      I think they plan to bring a few new EVs in 2025, their own design while the Solterra is mostly designed by Toyota while Subaru just did the AWD for it basically.

      This Impreza has nothing to do with Mazda. Am I misunderstanding your comment? I am assuming it’s a crack on Subaru and you mean Subie is going soft like Mazda? But I want to be very accurate with our info and facts. This is the sixth gen Impreza and continues to use the Subaru Global Platform that underpins their entire lineup.

      @@BeyondTheTestDriveI think he is trying to say that this is a copy of the Mazda 3 hatch? Which it doesnt have an egg-shaped back with tiny lights. It has a much better look and visibility. Also, Mazda is not the first company to do a hatchback.

    How this compares to Mazda 3 Civic 1.5t hatchback

    • @BeyondTheTestDrive
      @BeyondTheTestDrive  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Great question. The Civic is two wheel drive. I would say it feels a little quicker and handles better, plus it has gobs of room. I actually like the CVT in the Subaru better though. The Subaru rides better. A huge difference to the 3. The 3 can also be had with AWD, but the overall driving experience is completely different. Quieter and quicker but rides a little rougher than the Subaru. Plus it is tight on space. The 3 also does not have a CVT. Feature wise for the price the Subie is number one and the 3 would be last. They all offer a different driving experience, so try to drive them all if you can. I like the Subaru because it’s just so different and less common than the Civic and I like it’s CVT better.

    • @chucktownattack
      @chucktownattack 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Highly comparable. What do you want out of the car? Do you want more of a sporty ride in the Civic or are you in an environment where you need the Subaru AWD? There's the other end of the spectrum with vehicles like the Corolla Cross/Hybrid if you want a full on family vehicle.
