2024 Subaru Impreza RS | It's Not What You Think

  • Sedans and stick shifts have been shown the door for this all-new 2024, 6th generation Impreza but there is a more powerful engine option now and the only way to get it is by choosing this resuscitated RS trim - the new range-topping Impreza with a starting MSRP of $28,975. As a step up from the standard 2.0-liter Boxer 4, this 2.5 invites 182 horses to the Impreza party - that’s 30 more. It produces a maximum of 178 pound-feet of torque working through a CVT that you yourself can shift as a faux 8-speed via the paddle shifters. There’s a sport-tuned double wishbone suspension in the rear and larger front brakes while 18” V-speed rated rubber by Yokahama provides the grip. And you’ve got to hand it to Subaru - it looks the part of a racier RS model with plenty of black accents and LED front lighting nicely complementing the pearl paint. With the red RS badges, it’s a looker and certainly portends plenty of fun. But it’s difficult to find said fun when the powertrain is such a dud.
    MSRP as-tested: $28,975

I’m currently considering a Crosstrek but this car is in the mix for me as essentially a non-lifted Crosstrek. The WRX would be fun but it’s a non starter for me because I commute 40 miles each way and the combination of lousy fuel economy and requirement of Premium fuel in the WRX make it impractical. If you compare this RS to a comparably priced Civic, Corolla, Elantra or Mazda 3 it’s a better test and you’re basically trading Subaru AWD for leather in a Civic Touring Sport or Mazda 3 Carbon. Not sure why all Subarus have to be WRX comps when Civics and other compacts don’t.

He is honest but biased. So here is my biased overlook. I wanted a hatchback, not a car or 'sports' car and this fits great literally have this model and color. I find it odd OP here took a shot at hatchbacks as I read more people are digging them even more so than sub-compact SUVs. Further, it is a hatchback so why is he even bringing this up in the first place? I think it is well loaded for the price point and if you are older driver or with back issues, this a very comfy car without feeling like Buick. Loading it up is easy. I ended up taking this over the Crosstrek because at the price point- I got it loaded with the features for less than a Crosstrek. I like the look of it more and Crosstreks are just about everywhere. I heard the Impreza actually has 'slightly' more cargo room inside than Crosstrek too. This car is, for the most part, is a lowered Crosstrek without looking like some old igloo container with all that plastic exterior look. I don't have mountains nor snow, just a lot of rain. But being my first AWD I am thrilled I am not slipping off the line when the roads are drenched! Test this car if you are thinking about a hatchback or if the Crosstrek is simply giving you second thoughts. It has pep but again, my bias buy was to be near or at 200 hp, plus features. I am that old but not that old that I need to feel my testosterone. It isn't a wrx and stick gets old after using it for nearly 20 years in traffic.

I'd love to have a hatch that I can put my bike (bicycle) in that's also available in a manual. This would have been great with a manual. I'd consider the GTI but not sure about having to deal with the touch screen to adjust almost anything. Same issue here (to a slightly lesser degree) but it's not even available in a manual. Thank goodness for 2021 and older GTIs. I mean it's not illegal to buy a slightly used car and not have to deal with huge touchscreens, right? :-)

Thanks for the candid and comprehensive look, Steve.
This was always Subaru’s MO with their “sport” trims: All show (two-tone paint jobs) and no performance improvement at all. Too bad they’ve done that here, in a situation where they’ve actually installed a bigger engine and charged significantly more. Agree that the winning play is to go as “base” as you can, or step up to a Crosstrek or WRX.

    • @stevehammes

    • @4orrcountry

It's definitely TOO low, same as most Impreza hatchbacks for past 10+ years. If you're 65+, get the higher Crosstrek!

Subaru is taking cues from a bow tie brand from GM in having a sport model in disguise with this Impreza.

funny on that hatchback statement Steve...all I seem to hear from the WRX/STi faithful (myself included), is that we want the hatchback body style back wearing a WRX/STI badge (+ Turbo power, manual transmission). Frankly (or Stevely), I almost wish Subaru would drop the sedan from their line up. The Crosstrek is already in proven so why not expand on the hatch body w/the Crosstrek/RS/WRX/STI sharing 50% of things. Tooling would be split across 4 models, almost seems like a win-win. Yes, 2-3 engines, 2 transmissions, and then of course all of the other suspension and swappable bits that make each car different. Interiors would mostly be the same w/minor differences. Subarus have lots of overlap anyway; so why not just eliminate the 4-door sedan, and do the 4-door hatch thing. +1 vote for the hatch

I was under the impression that Subarus were more of a reliable manufacturer considering the Japanese origin and toyota being partial stakeholders. Never thought they were this bad.

@@stevehammes that's based on the latest J.D. Power dependability study which also has Honda at 205 PP100, Toyota at 168, and Kia at 152, right? It seems like ever since the study was redesigned to include technology in 2022, the infotainment system tends to be the most problematic.

I drove this with my dad who has owned and still owns a Subaru. His addiction to the AWD system that reminds him of older Mercedes has him emotionally invested in the brand. He thinks Subarus have superior handling vs any front wheel drive counterpart. Steve your verdict about this car was my exact conclusion, the opposite of what my 60 year old dad thought who was a formula 3 driver!. I don’t understand the sporty RS badge on a car that delivers power in such a sedate manner you have no confidence in getting out of your own way. My Tacoma v6 weighing in at 4,600lb’s is car lengths ahead by the time this Impreza knows what day it is. Steering feel was video game like, no on center feel. We both got into a WRX right after and that Impreza was completely forgotten! There is no comparison. Fun is not something you find in an Impreza, although you may convince others simply due to the looks. Damn con artist.

Only Subaru can release a “new” car and it already looks a decade old. If it was a 2014 I’d believe it. You must really need AWD if you choose this over anything else. My 22 Civic Touring Hatch trounces this everywhere else for one for the same price.
