This is NOT a Dandelion. | Deep Look

- Not every yellow bloom ― or fluffy white globe ― taking over your backyard is a dandelion. Some of them are close relatives called catsears. But both of them have a little secret. To tell them apart and discover why they’re so successful you need to peek under their petals.

---
Gardeners cursing as they yank out yellow blooms from the ground might be misplacing their anger. Not everything that looks like a dandelion is one.
Dandelions have many doppelgangers, among them the most successful plant you’ve never heard of: catsears.
Bees and butterflies love the nectar and pollen provided by dandelions and catsears, and little songbirds like lesser goldfinches feed on their seeds. But it’s hard to convince some gardeners of their virtues.
“Most people who have a nice turf want only grasses,” said Joe DiTomaso, a weed researcher who retired from the University of California, Davis.
Whether you’re a friend or a foe, telling dandelions and catsears apart could be useful ― if only to know thine enemy ― and a fun way to ponder what makes these yellow blooms so successful.
--- How do you tell if it’s a dandelion?
Under a dandelion’s ― and a catsear’s ― petals you’ll see green structures that hold the bloom. They’re called phyllaries. In catsears, they all point up. In dandelions, some phyllaries curl down.
Dandelion and common catsear leaves have a similar shape, with toothed edges that give dandelions their name ― an adaptation from the French dent-de-lion, or lion’s tooth. The leaves of the common catsear are more lobed than pointy and they’re furry, while dandelions’ are smooth. Both leaves are edible, prepared in salads or sautéed.
One other way to tell them apart is that each stem of catsears branches into multiple blooms, while dandelions have only one bloom per stem.
-- What other plants look like dandelions?
A plant by the scientific name of Leontodon resembles dandelions so much that it is known as false dandelion. It is also known as lesser hawkbit, said DiTomaso.
“Where it’s confusing is its leaves look fairly similar and it has one flower per stem like dandelion, so a lot of people think it’s dandelion,” he said.

Yeah i agree
@Animal lover its a type of ant species
Little known thing about the dandelion is that it's a pioneer plant species. And as is the case with all pioneer plants they are most successful when the conditions for more permanent growth is not ideal. They lock nutrients into the ground. So they are very good plants to have from a long term perspective. Once ground nutrients and PH is normalised other plants easily out-compete them.
A mowed lawn is akin to a grazed meadow. However of course dandelions are the first thing to be grazed. So basically with a lawn your best bet is to mow regularly enough so that flowers and seeds can never form. However it is worth noting that dandelions are very good for your lawn too if you can live with them. They will only take over if your soil is really poor.
In most cases you can sample your soil to determine deficiencies that you can nudge into a better range through fertilisers. Your other plants then have a chance to out-compete them.
But dandelions are good for soil. No mess. No fertiliser runoff. No fuss. And I find them to be a particularly fetching plant as well.
Other plants: oh no! I’m gonna die from this terrible ph level!
Dandelions: Oh, is that concrete? Epic...
Great info thx

Thanks!
No problem
In Norway we call them "Løvetann" wich means lion tooth.
In Spanish, they are called exactly that; "diente de león".
When I was a kid, I was told it was because the densely packed petals look like a lions mane.
We used to call the seeds “anjinhos”, little angels. If one flew into you it was saying hi and you had to make a wish!
I'm from the brazilian northeast so the portuguese term "anjinhos" called my attention haha. Sadly, I haven't heard of such a tradition. I find it truly beautiful! Obrigado por compartilhar :)

Humans: stupid cats ears
Every other living thing on the planet: yum yum I like this plant
underrated
Any friend and or relative of dandelions is welcome in my garden.
I have purple hawkweed and Indian paintbrush, awa tons of dandelions.
These cats ears look a lot like a cross between the former two.
When your similar looking cousin unlocks your phone and impersonates you.
hihihihihihi.
Wait is that even possible? Because our faces are not the same.
Most “weeds” are so incredibly beneficial to our ecosystems. Whether it’s underground helping balance nutrients or above feeding all kinds of helpful friends with greens, seeds or pollen! Chemical treatments to remove them harm more than just the plant.
Still, it's good to know your weeds, ones from other countries are almost guaranteed to be invasive (including several species of clover for example). Dandelion (and sometimes cats ear) is one of the few that isn't too aggressive and just grows wherever without bullying other plants. Allow native weeds to grow more, they can suppress or take over invasive ones and you won't need to use any herbicides.
@@SimonWoodburyForget gardens, standing water, abandoned buildings, rotting food waste, and unsanitary living conditions also attract pests that can carry disease.
Agreed, weeds being designated by aesthetic does a huge disservice
Some invasives though, like buckthorn (I'm in the Midwest United States) do often need to be controlled using herbicide because it's that aggressive and harmful
>dandelions clone themselves
Me seeing a dandelion: Your clones are impressive. You must be very proud.

Weeds have never been more lovable...
finally, deep look posted something, im so happyyy
Now that I've taken a Deep Look, they don't look like dandelions whatsoever.
I knew it wasn’t a dandelion. Have had those near my house and always thought they were a little too strange to be dandelions.
Although i am a gardener, i love dandelions!
So *that's* what these things are called! Catsears are among my favourite flowers. Every Spring here in Australia there are vast fields of these flowers. The flower stems are so impossibly long and slender that even from a short distance, the bright yellow blossoms appear as if they're hovering in mid-air. It's magic. I absolutely love them!
In herbal remedies, the catsear plant has been used for treating kidney and liver problems, urinary tract infections, gallbladder issues, and constipation. Roots can be ground and used to make a coffee-like drink.
This channel is so precious, only special people found and appreciate this.

This is awesome. Do more plants! Love it.
I know this is random.
Have you ever noticed that males live shorter than female in almost every kind of species.
I wonder why?
Just a guess, but it might have something to do with the reproductive system. If the goal of every living being is to reproduce and create offsprings, the males's role in reproduction ended, often long before the offspring is born, while the female needs to be there until the offsprings are born. So since the males' role (/goal) has been fulfilled, they can cease to exist. I don't think this theory is applicable for all animals of course, but that's what I thought. Sorry for bad English btw 😂
