The Pipevine Caterpillar Thrives in a Toxic Love Triangle | Deep Look

  • The devilish caterpillars of the pipevine swallowtail butterfly devour the California pipevine, never mind that the plant is trying to poison them. Their butterfly moms don’t pollinate the pipevine in return, though. So, the vine traps unlucky gnats in its labyrinthine flowers to do the job.

    DEEP LOOK is an ultra-HD (4K) short video series created by KQED San Francisco and presented by PBS Digital Studios. See the unseen at the very edge of our visible world. Explore big scientific mysteries by going incredibly small.
    ---
    This is the story of a love triangle between a plant, a striking butterfly and an intrepid gnat. At the center of this triangle is the California pipevine (Aristolochia californica). The plant produces poisonous compounds called aristolochic acids and it’s also known as the California Dutchman’s pipe because its flowers are shaped like a tobacco pipe.
    The California pipevine swallowtail butterfly (Battus philenor hirsuta) loves the vine. It flutters around the plant with its bright blue and orange wings and lays clusters of eggs on leaves and stems. When they hatch, the caterpillars feed exclusively on the pipevine. But the butterflies don’t pollinate the plant. Instead, the pipevine lures fungus gnats into its flowers with a mushroomy aroma that reminds the flies of the fungi they feed on in the soil as larvae. The flies get stuck inside the curved flowers long enough for their hairs to get coated in pollen. This strategy in which a plant attracts pollinators under false pretenses is called deceptive pollination.
    --- Is the California pipevine a native plant?
    Yes, it’s the only pipevine native to the state. It grows naturally along rivers.
    --- Are fungus gnats considered pests?
    Yes, they are. The adult flies lay their eggs in the earth, where their larvae feed on fungi and plant matter. If they get into potted soil, they can chew on the roots of houseplants and damage them.

    Good try everyone! No-one got our GIF challenge correct for this episode. The caterpillars feeding side by side helps them grow bigger faster. The faster they grow, the better protected they are because they accumulate toxins in their bodies as they feed on the California pipevine.

    Here in Australia we have the Richmond birdwing butterfly, and it's caterpillars feed on the birdwing pipe vine. This plant has become rather uncommon.
    Unfortunately there is another pipe vine, an invasive species called the calico Dutchman's pipe vine. It's very common .
    The butterflies will lay their eggs on this feral species, they can't seem to tell the difference between this and the native species.
    It has a 100% mortality on all the birdwing caterpillars that hatch and feed on it.
    Because of this, habitat loss and drought, the Richmond birdwing butterfly is now a threatened species.
    Luckily schools and environmentally responsible families are planting the native pipevine species and removing the invasive one. Hopefully this will boost the numbers of the Richmond birdwing butterfly so that it is no longer threatened with extinction.

      We actually have a similar problem in the U.S, with related species! Our pipe-vine swallowtail (Battus philenor) feeds on our native pipe-vines (several Aristolochia species,) but are fooled by introduced pipe-vine species. The introduced species fool the butterflies into laying eggs on them, then poison the caterpillars. Thankfully our native pipe-vines perform better than the introduced ones, so the pipe-vine swallowtail is not facing extinction (at least, not in the eastern U.S.)

      That's pretty sad. It's always devastating to learn that a certain species is going extinct. We need to preserve all the earth's animals and insects so that future generations can see and learn about them too. Thank you for bringing attention to this particular issue. More people need to know so that more people can help bring them back from the brink of extinction.

      @lastEvergreen 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      At least with a 100 percent mortality rate, the butterflies that avoid the invasive vine will spread their genes more quickly.

    Reminds me a bit of monarch butterfly caterpillars only eating milkweed. Reminder to everyone to plant endangered native plants in their garden or even just in a window box if they can! It can help conservation of specialized insects like these too and not just the plants. Added bonus, the more flowers, the more food for bees!

    • @Insect_Expert1489
      @Insect_Expert1489 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      There is also another problem with that Monarchs need to eat NATIVE Milkweed. People are getting the wrong kind of milkweed that makes the butterflies deformed and become less migratory which is a huge problem for the Monarchs

It's remarkable that anything is alive at all and we got so lucky to have the wealth of biodiversity we do have. I wish people would see how important it is to protect this. As far as we know life is completely unique to earth and every species we let go extinct is a profound eternal tragedy.

    The Darth Maul of caterpillars. I wonder why they are called caterpillars when they look nothing like cats.

      late Middle English: perhaps from a variant of Old French _chatepelose_ , literally ‘hairy cat’, influenced by obsolete _piller_ ‘ravager’.
      The association with ‘cat’ is found in other languages, e.g. Swiss German _Teufelskatz_ (literally ‘devil's cat’), Lombard _gatta_ (literally ‘cat’).
      Compare with French _chaton_ , English catkin, which resembles a hairy caterpillar.

    Kind of a waste that the pipevine plant doesn't make use of the gnats it inadvertently kills. But, perhaps, the combination of the dead gnats and wilting flower provides a nice compost to the ground.

    Why do I find this entertaining yet educational…
    I wish school was like this

      Maybe if school was optional and teachers made more money the more students they had, they would be more incentivized to make their classes actually interesting.
