Here in Australia we have the Richmond birdwing butterfly, and it's caterpillars feed on the birdwing pipe vine. This plant has become rather uncommon. Unfortunately there is another pipe vine, an invasive species called the calico Dutchman's pipe vine. It's very common . The butterflies will lay their eggs on this feral species, they can't seem to tell the difference between this and the native species. It has a 100% mortality on all the birdwing caterpillars that hatch and feed on it. Because of this, habitat loss and drought, the Richmond birdwing butterfly is now a threatened species. Luckily schools and environmentally responsible families are planting the native pipevine species and removing the invasive one. Hopefully this will boost the numbers of the Richmond birdwing butterfly so that it is no longer threatened with extinction.
We actually have a similar problem in the U.S, with related species! Our pipe-vine swallowtail (Battus philenor) feeds on our native pipe-vines (several Aristolochia species,) but are fooled by introduced pipe-vine species. The introduced species fool the butterflies into laying eggs on them, then poison the caterpillars. Thankfully our native pipe-vines perform better than the introduced ones, so the pipe-vine swallowtail is not facing extinction (at least, not in the eastern U.S.)
That's pretty sad. It's always devastating to learn that a certain species is going extinct. We need to preserve all the earth's animals and insects so that future generations can see and learn about them too. Thank you for bringing attention to this particular issue. More people need to know so that more people can help bring them back from the brink of extinction.
100 %! A stunning figure for evolution to do nothing at all on it! Bits irrelevant to the main subject, how its relative might have obtained it would be an intriguing topic.
My mom just found a group of pipevine caterpillars in our backyard a few days ago! They're eating so much that she's had to order more pipevine plants to make sure they have enough. Thanks for teaching me more about them! 😊
Reminds me a bit of monarch butterfly caterpillars only eating milkweed. Reminder to everyone to plant endangered native plants in their garden or even just in a window box if they can! It can help conservation of specialized insects like these too and not just the plants. Added bonus, the more flowers, the more food for bees!
There is also another problem with that Monarchs need to eat NATIVE Milkweed. People are getting the wrong kind of milkweed that makes the butterflies deformed and become less migratory which is a huge problem for the Monarchs

Deep Look vids, calming and in depth info. They know how to get it into your memory. Thank You !! for all your hard work making these videos!! 😊I love them!
Legit made me tear up so beautiful. Life is so interconnected and nature is full of these complex stories of codependence. It's remarkable that anything is alive at all and we got so lucky to have the wealth of biodiversity we do have. I wish people would see how important it is to protect this. As far as we know life is completely unique to earth and every species we let go extinct is a profound eternal tragedy.
The only food source feeds, poisons, and protects the caterpillar?!? What a toxic/critical relationship!!😳🤔 The California pipevine’s survival strategies are very interesting~💯☘🐛 Thank you for sharing this awesome video! 🤗👍 🔆AniFam〽️
Wow!! Deceptive pollination nice concept to learn about. It's a smart flower, isn't it? I thoroughly enjoy this video's of Deep Look. Great work guys👍🏻👍🏻 Kudos👏🏻👏🏻 Namaskaram 🙏🏻🙏🏻
I have an idea why they get bigger faster when eating in social groups, having competition next to you might increase your rate of eating. I see it in so many animals.
Getting my sister to watch these has been a true accomplishment and it was easy cause these videos are so entertaining but informative🤣🤟🏾 thanks for getting us through quarantine
Itd be cool if u guys did something on the emerald ash borer! I love your work and I always get excited when you do a video on an animal/insect I know about/have seen irl.
Maybe if school was optional and teachers made more money the more students they had, they would be more incentivized to make their classes actually interesting.
One of my favorites channels just love the content and performance. It's actually good to know about these stuff umm also can you guys make something relating to ants, bees or wasps please 😅
People in my school called me a nerd because I'm willing to watch and do more research on any videos my teacher shows me. I love watching bug videos, animals, and history.

Kind of a waste that the pipevine plant doesn't make use of the gnats it inadvertently kills. But, perhaps, the combination of the dead gnats and wilting flower provides a nice compost to the ground.

At least with a 100 percent mortality rate, the butterflies that avoid the invasive vine will spread their genes more quickly.

Wow. Too bad the video itself didn’t address this.
