Only now with technology do hours become minutes, minutes into seconds and we can watch these plants move as if they were animals. I'm sure many people studied this plant before and I wish all who had could see it grow and move like we can now.
Time lapse video surely is easier to process now with computers, but the technique isn't new at all, and neither is it really that sophisticated. It's just still photography with a set interval

I was once told that plants can be viewed a bit like animals all trying to get at a bowl of food. They kick and punch and wrestle each other to get to the bowl (Which in the case of plants is sunlight), but it happens so slowly that you don't really notice it while walking through the forest. Vines climbing up tree trunks. Saplings trying to grow in the shade. Different leaf sizes and shapes meant for optimal capture of whatever rays make it to them. It's a slow and perpetual war with seasonal victories and losses.
The thing is we humans imagine time as the time we experience but that’s so silly it’s more like everything experiences time differently so for plants it’s normal speed we are just like humming birds and flys or bees to them we are so fast

When I've been lost in thought about what kind of alien species might exist out there in the universe, I've found myself wondering if there might be species out there that we might completely miss or misunderstand because they either live far faster, or far slower than we do - throwing off our intuitions. In a way, plants are kind of like this. Time lapses show them in a totally different light. In real time, they might as well be inanimate objects to us. But time lapses show almost animalistic qualities at times

Wow, that beauty is actually a beast in disguise. In the local zoo as a youngster I was impressed by it's beauty in the pond in the tropical greenhouse. It's flowering was a yearly event. Never did I suspect it's monstruos behavior.
I am currently working painting a botanical jungle mural and this shows timing couldn’t be better. Totally inspirational! I just spent two hours on water lilies. I’m the lucky owner of a corpse flower (not the kind featured - titan arum) and I’m inspired to include it too! So glad to see this being released and for the incredible filming that puts plants on a human timeline.
I love how the sound effects are so realistic that it seems like it's happening in real time, though it's obviously time-lapsed. It's detailed down to the withering of the little flower. Great sound engineering.

@@zacharykenniston748 they don't feel pain because they don't have nervous systems, but they do respond to distress which is what i think you're referring to. they release chemicals that alert other plants to predators in the area and stuff like that.
On the one hand.. sure sucks for the other plants. On the other hand, it manages to cool the water temperature and offer safety to fish from bird predators. It's really interesting, the balance of things

I think it’s important to note that although here the plant itself is framed to be ‘evil’ or ‘horrifying’, in reality, the only way it can destroy so many other species is when it is removed from its natural environment and entered into a different ecosystem; much like the cane toads in Australia.

It's called Green Earth and it's tangentially connected to a whole BBC series like Planet Earth 1, Planet Earth 2, Blue Planet 1, Blue Planet 2, and now Green Planet. They're all on TV and they've been working on this series of documentaries since the 00s and they're still making fresh ones like this.
This video is great at showing the warfare plants commit daily, it's amazing what they're are capable of in terms of survival and competition. Thanks to time-lapse cameras it's easier to observe these behaviors, it's great
Sometimes it’s hard to conceptualize that plants are living things. Instead of just inanimate objects that just sit there doing nothing. But when sped up it really shows these are living creatures. It’s almost like they live in a different time dimension from us.

Watched this with my hubby. When the giant water lilies were expanding and squishing the other plants, he kept making small screaming noises as those plants got pushed/shoved/died.
Something people don't often consider is that your size, life expectancy, and metabolism play a huge role in "time". If you grow slowly, like a plant, that is your "movement". we see plenty of plants move to find sunlight during a matter of minutes and some can move instantly. Additionally an animal like a Greenland shark which can live for 500 years would probably feel like a year is a week because of their relative idea of time. an animal like an ant would consider ever minute to be a significant amount of time and they probably make hundreds of decisions in that timespan
The quality of the up close video shot is amazing! Really love David Attenborough narrating about nature. Such a blessing to grow up on nature since I was a kid, always fascinated and learning new stuff in nature because of him. I always looked forward to Sunday night, to catch the nature show on ABC I believed, back in the 90s.
It amazing to look how no matter what type of life it is. Whether it’s an animal or a plant, there will always be a competition in order to survive in nature.
The videography that the BBC filmmakers are able to accomplish is absolutely breathtaking and awe inspiring. I genuinely don't understand how they get these shots. I heard they will post a cameraman for weeks or months just to get a single shot of whatever they are trying to capture. That level of determination and passion is genuinely impressive.

As majestic as these seem, in the provice I used to visit at, they're so aggressively reproducing and massive that they're often culled in a regular basis. Not even kidding these were threats to our bridges' structural integrity.

You should watch the whole episode, they have a 10-minute sequence at the end where they actually explained how they filmed this plant in particular (half on location and half in a studio where they recreated a pond) :)
its terrible. cinematography is pretentious and distracts from the documentary itself. idk why they didn't just make it about cinematography - clearly they cared very little about the plants, otherwise they wouldn't have used recycled themes [utricularia in bromeliad] (they've done that same sequence about 3 times in different documentaries). they also mixed plants that don't occur naturally together anyway, from different continents even. the sound effects are stupid, and the information given was very mediocre - not to mention the terrible lack of continuity.
They found a way to make the plants have so much personality. This filming is incredible.

I am always fascinated by people imagining alien/extra terrestrial life because you only need to look at our *own* planet to see weird, disturbing and ultra fascinating stuff like this. I mean, you are really going to tell me that *this* doesn't look like something straight out of a alien horror movie?
Not to mention the deep oceans that still remain over 80% unexplored. Gotta wonder what is there lingering beneath the surface...

I was once told that plants can be viewed a bit like animals all trying to get at a bowl of food. They kick and punch and wrestle each other to get to the bowl (Which in the case of plants is sunlight), but it happens so slowly that you don't really notice it while walking through the forest. Vines climbing up tree trunks. Saplings trying to grow in the shade. Different leaf sizes and shapes meant for optimal capture of whatever rays make it to them. It's a slow and perpetual war with seasonal victories and losses.
I've thought about this, and you just put it into words. Amazingly interesting!

When I've been lost in thought about what kind of alien species might exist out there in the universe, I've found myself wondering if there might be species out there that we might completely miss or misunderstand because they either live far faster, or far slower than we do - throwing off our intuitions. In a way, plants are kind of like this. Time lapses show them in a totally different light. In real time, they might as well be inanimate objects to us. But time lapses show almost animalistic qualities at times

I am currently working painting a botanical jungle mural and this shows timing couldn’t be better. Totally inspirational! I just spent two hours on water lilies. I’m the lucky owner of a corpse flower (not the kind featured - titan arum) and I’m inspired to include it too! So glad to see this being released and for the incredible filming that puts plants on a human timeline.

Watched this with my hubby. When the giant water lilies were expanding and squishing the other plants, he kept making small screaming noises as those plants got pushed/shoved/died.

Plants fascinate me. So many reasons but my favourite thing about them is, they don't talk
Something people don't often consider is that your size, life expectancy, and metabolism play a huge role in "time". If you grow slowly, like a plant, that is your "movement". we see plenty of plants move to find sunlight during a matter of minutes and some can move instantly. Additionally an animal like a Greenland shark which can live for 500 years would probably feel like a year is a week because of their relative idea of time. an animal like an ant would consider ever minute to be a significant amount of time and they probably make hundreds of decisions in that timespan

The quality of the up close video shot is amazing! Really love David Attenborough narrating about nature. Such a blessing to grow up on nature since I was a kid, always fascinated and learning new stuff in nature because of him. I always looked forward to Sunday night, to catch the nature show on ABC I believed, back in the 90s.

The videography that the BBC filmmakers are able to accomplish is absolutely breathtaking and awe inspiring. I genuinely don't understand how they get these shots. I heard they will post a cameraman for weeks or months just to get a single shot of whatever they are trying to capture. That level of determination and passion is genuinely impressive.

I first fell in love with biology as a child (and later became a biologist), largely thanks to David Attenborough and his Life on Earth series. It's amazing to see him still sharing the wonder of nature with us all.

Giant lilies are like trees in the forest; the tallest and widest canopied plant will always win and choke out plants below it. The lilies natural predators are beavers, ducks, certain fish, aphids, and beetles.

You should watch the whole episode, they have a 10-minute sequence at the end where they actually explained how they filmed this plant in particular (half on location and half in a studio where they recreated a pond) :)

cinematography is pretentious and distracts from the documentary itself.
idk why they didn't just make it about cinematography - clearly they cared very little about the plants, otherwise they wouldn't have used recycled themes [utricularia in bromeliad] (they've done that same sequence about 3 times in different documentaries).
they also mixed plants that don't occur naturally together anyway, from different continents even. the sound effects are stupid, and the information given was very mediocre - not to mention the terrible lack of continuity.
