We dedicated this episode to Debbie Ford, the mother of butterfly researcher Aaron Pomerantz who we see in this episode. Aaron’s mother passed suddenly shortly before the episode was completed.

As a Central American native I was quite surprised by this episode. Glasswings are all over my backyard, and I always found them rather unremarkable compared to other flashier butterflies or the many way more flamboyant and exotic insects that creep around here. However, reading about the science of their camouflage does give me a newfound respect for the little critters.
Reminds me of clearwing moths. Found a hornet clearwing a few weeks ago and it managed to fool me with its mimicry for a bit before I realized it was a moth!
i found one a long time ago (i'm from guatemala) and its wings had a delicate almost non-existent iridescent shimmer that makes you think about bubbles, it's a beautiful creature without a doubt :-)
I have watched all 117 vids on this channel. The content is amazing, they don't drag out the video to be longer and keep it simple, and the production is next level. Favourite channel on TH-cam
You have to admit that's pretty awesome to be a creature that started off not being able to fly and moves very slowly to a week laser getting wings and being able to fly
Like how a sign doesn't get posted until someone screws up, do organisms get warning markers after a hundred or so generations have their life continued by a mere glimmer of light?
I swear to God I saw one of these on my trip to Mexico, I was so confused since it was my first time encountering one. It was an amazing rare encounter.
whats the point of having transparent wings but then a bright white stripe on the top that attracts attention? how does this contradictory help them survive?
When I was like 3 or 4, i was convinced I saw a fairy. It had transparent wings and it looked almost like it sparkled when it flew past the sun. I loved fairies already before then, but thinking I saw one in real life made me obssesed with them for years. I now realise that it was probably a glasswing butterfly, but it really stuck with me and that memory still feels magical lol. I love glasswings.

Glasswing: Check it out, Im invisible.
Human: Um, I can still see you...
Bird: Where did it go????
True, human can see it better
Nah, try being out in the trees; you wouldn't be able to pick it out as easily as a bird.
@@Zaihanisme nah, I've been to rivers and easily spotted them. It was my first time ever seeing them in real life.

Glasswings have mastered the art of standing so incredibly still, they become invisible to the eye
Birds have good vision, maybe it's harder to see it from far away?

I was super impressed till i realized almost every other flying insect has transparent wings
Good point, though, most don't have wings that are this large
But most of their wings are reflective.
lol
It's almost like you didn't comprehend what you watched.
It’s interesting to see a butterfly with transparent wings and it’s not completely transparent since there is still color around the edges
