- I love seeing new competition enter the sim racing market, but is the Turtle Beach Velocity One Race worth considering for entry level sim racers or drivers wanting to upgrade from a gear/belt wheel?

The USB cable issue for the RGB is probably that its using a true USB 3.1 cable so it can send the extra power to run the lights and the cable you used was probably a generic one thats rated at USB 2.0 speed's, I have found unless the box or description states what speed or spec of USB it can do then its just a USB 2.0 designed with charging only in mind, the amount of 100watt cables iv owned that only support USB 2.0 speeds is crazy so now I only buy ones that specifically mention USB 3 or better, I bet they used 12v for the lights on the unit so if USB 2.0 cable is used then only 5v would be sent, see if you can get a longer USB-C to C 3.1 cable and see if you have same issue as would be handy if other ran in to same issue and its just the cable rather than the hardware.
Congratulations, this is the first decent complete review to see on this product. Even you got this wheel for free from TB, I can feel some honest opinions 👍
Just realized, those lower paddles that you didn't have any use for may be an accessibility feature to allow those without the use of their lower limbs to be able to play and have analog throttle/brake inputs. Hand controls!
They absolutely have benefits there and I'm all for more accessibility! I just think its a bummer that they can't be mapped to anything besides those 4 inputs for people that don't need those.
They are for standing starts, release one to drop clutch to bite point then slowly release second. They're on most high end wheels and I'm quite surprised to see them on this.
@@Gr00t unfortunately you can't set them up like a double clutch - at least I never figured out a way to do it myself. You can set both the left and right paddle to clutch, but you can't set one differently to another so you can't for example set just one to the bite point.

A really welcome addition to the budget DD arena, consistent firmware updates can really do wonders for this compared to the competition.
The lack of a shifter and handbrake is quite a big drawback though, I really hope they invest some cash into making additional peripherals. Especially for Xbox users where you can't mix and match peripherals much although tbh the PC Market is significantly bigger.
A shifter around the price of the Thrustmaster TH8S would be pretty appealing, above the Logitech shifter but below the TH8A and Moza/Fanatec offerings.
Hopefully they can get their QC sorted out soon because we definitely need more options available for the budget arena. Logitech and Thrustmaster aren't really pricing themselves that well, Fanatec is still having massive supply issues and Moza availability isn't the greatest in some markets. It only really seems to be the higher tier stuff that has everything sorted out with regards to product support, supply and customer service but then again you are paying a very significant amount for that in most cases.
Great review. I'm a console player and I have the logitech g pro wheel, I was shocked when I saw this released and considered getting one to test out. The g pro wheel and this wheel have the same issue when it comes to their lack of ecosystems which I hope both resolve sooner than later.

As someone who has had my first wheel (G920) since 2018, I've been considering upgrading to a DD wheel, but they're kinda expensive while not adding enough features to justify the prices in my opinion, but this, this ticks almost every box there is, and for one hell of a low price for what it gives you.
I'm definitely considering buying it, but I would prefer a rounder wheel and fixes to the build quality.
Edit: Forgot to mention I play on Xbox, so this is real big (now we just need more console sims lol, can't wait for AC Evo)
There are many DD options for Xbox. There's plenty from Fanatec. As I said in my own comment, I'll just copy and paste it here:
This Turtle Beach one is only a 7.2 NM wheel base and pedals for $650. Doesn't look like the wheel is customizable to be changed for different types of cars. Edit. I guess it does have an interchangeable wheel. I skimmed past him mentioning it I guess. Gonna watch again to make sure thougg. 🤷♂️
Fanatec has bundle deals, and if you only play on PC and Xbox, there is a 5NM wheel base with a Mclaren GT3 wheel and pedals all for $480. It also comes with the boost kit to make it 8NM. So you're getting a stronger wheel base with interchangeable steering wheels.
Basically any Fanatec wheel base works with Xbox. Xbox gets its licenses from the wheel/rim which is what's needed to play it for Xbox. For another example like mine, its Fanatecs CSL DD+ (15 NM) wheel base for PC/PS and I have the Mclaren GT3 wheel for Xbox. This combo lets it work for PC, PS5, and Xbox all-in-one. Playstation gets its license from the wheel base like the PC does.
If I want to change wheels/rims for driving different cars, I have that option. Normal round wheels, GT3 wheels like mine, or F1 wheels. To keep it playable on Xbox, all I need to do is make sure it's an Xbox wheel.
Correction, I thought the Fanatec $480 bundle included the boost kit that makes the wheel base 8NM. If you want that, it's another $150

@racdude01 Yup. Which is why I came back with my correction....so I don't mislead him. I'd still choose Fanatec in the long run anyways since I play on both consoles, Fanatec allows me to be on both and PC with the combination I mentioned.
If you think you'll forever be on just Xbox or just PC, or maybe just those 2, then fine. This may be a good choice. I like the customizations with Fanatecs and the higher torque output for the wheelbase. If I knew years ago when I got my whole Logitech setup for Xbox, that there was a way to have a wheel for both, I would have saved money and gone that route first. Instead, I ended up buying the entire setup and then buying a whole new one as of very recently.
All comes to what you want in the end. I try to think of it in a future sense as well so I don't waste money like I said.

This is a pretty cool product, i can envision the market base and also selling well, new wheels and build quality upgrades are a must, very nice for a companies first try.

Like he said, That is a better starting button box than nothing. Though you'll probably have a better long-term experience with a purpose built button box, from say, Derek Speare Designs. I've been using one of theirs since around 2016 and it's wonderful. I specifically got the Race King LED; there are others to choose from. I use it for iRacing, Beam, and the SCS Software trucking sims. ( I also got a turn signal steering column stalk set for the same sims, that was a nice upfit as a VR player too)
A button box coming as part of the package is crazy !! That does make me happy. Waiting on the turtle beach shifter

I’ve had mine since release it’s overheated once and I had to take it apart to fix a loose screw in the steering shaft. But other than that it’s been great. Also my button box is on the right and engine start button also turns on the Xbox
Wouldn't surprise me if the lack of feeling in the Feedback is due to them translating info made for another wheel brand in to ones for this wheel so may be (& I honestly hope so) that down the road as games implement full support for this wheel the feedback will be improved. I have the Logitech G Pro wheel and to get round this issue in games that dont fully support it they include a G923 compatibility mode that works perfect with any game that supports the G29/920/923 but not the newer G Pro wheel and it works well, but we all know this is the first wheel from TB so they cant really put in anything like that. shame the button box seems like a pure after thought as the idea is sound just for the next wheel they have to make that mount far stronger so far every review iv seen has mentioned about it flexing too much.

if i had the money i'd buy this right now without a second thought, all its missing is a shifter but it's easy to pick one up online.
And it sounds like it should work with most games, even ones that dont support that wheel as you can config with the screen. Meaning that Linux users might be able to use it as they normally dont make software for the other wheels for Linux.

@@seallzr3 is the only moza that works on Xbox and since the screen on turtle beach doesn’t work on horizon I’d say moza r3 is the better and cheaper choice

@@Miskamandariini R5 isn’t Xbox compatible though unless you also by the r3 (the compatibility chip is in the r3 wheel) but that’s a waste of money as the performance difference between the 2 isn’t big enough to justify the cost. The best upgrade from the r3 is the R12 it’s the only other one with a pedal port on the base. R9 doesn’t have a pedal port and thus isn’t console compatible. Can’t plug wheel and pedals into console separately
Just picked this up. Did you have any preferred settings for the wheel and pedals when in iRacing? I'm messing around with some of the settings on the RMD as well as the in-game settings but still trying to get it to feel right.
How do you like it? Seriously considering one, myself.

If this just came with a round rim, I would buy it as soon as I have the money for it. I don't like the flat bottom, but it isn't a reason not to buy it.
An unexpected product for sure but it's nice to have options.
So if they made a v2 fixing any hardware issues as well as firmware updates fixing force feedback details and this would be considered a seriously good option?
Honestly I'm glad they've entered the sim space...Their flight sim hardware has actually been really impressive so far
Is this a decent upgrade over the Logitech G920? I had one and got rid of it. Between the horrible noise it makes and super tiny feeling wheel I just decided a controller was still better than logitech wheels.
Hey, do you think you'd be able to put an aftermarket wheel onto the base its self (one without buttons) for something like drifting? I haven't seen many reviews talk about the quick release on there so just curious.
It's a proprietary quick release system, so until someone makes an adapter you won't be able to put third-party wheels on it. I'm sure eventually Turtle Beach or some other company will make one though

Only weird thing is that you need to pull the collar back to put the wheel on, most other quick releases I've used just press on, but that's obviously a super minor thing. It's also *really* similar to the Moza quick release while being just different enough to not fit Moza wheels. The quality of it though has been solid so far, all metal and feels quite sturdy.

I never understood why nearly all of the entry level wheels are D shaped for sim wheels. Even Mozas R5 is D shaped as standard, They offer a $100 round wheel replacement. WHY ISNT THAT THE DEFAUL? Almost all IRL vehicles have round wheels. Only a few higher end and grand touring cars have D shaped wheels. Its infinitely more universally useful to have the default be round and offer a D as an option. But it seems every single company goes against that.
Because the D-shaped wheel is really versatile. It's not the best to drift in, but you can; same for rally. But it still works. You can't drive a formula car with a full round wheel, but you can with a D-shaped wheel because it's a more low-profile shape. You can still race GT cars just fine. D-shaped wheels are versatile and it's not the most optimal but that doesn't mean it's inherently bad. You get it because it simply has the most versatility and you achieve a more cost-effective wheel.
@@casteroyste Its literally NOT versatile. Anything other than track specific car steering rotation situations is substantially better on a round wheel.
Also. 90% of F1 history was round wheels.

Theres no inherent benefit to D shapes other than being able to slip your legs beneath it easier. Which is why they're more prevalent in high end luxury grand touring cars. Theres nothing other than circumstantial convenience that a round wheel cant just as well do.
The point which you missed is that the cheaper options are going with the less versatile wheel form, for what I believe to be appealing to people who associate it with luxury car brands, rather than its effectiveness.

Anyways, they ARE quite versatile and you can drive perfectly with them. There is a reason why GT wheels and MODERN FORMULA 1 has wheel that are designed to have 2 grips that doesn't go in a full circle. If you find that driving really really old formula 1 cars, then be my guest, but modern F1 overall has no resemblance of a round wheel because it quite literally obstructs the view of the drivers because of how humongous it is. It is quite literally more cost effective because rubber/leather around a smaller diameter with a small little long piece of leather/rubber on the bottom is more cost effective but if its not its closer to equal if anything. Lastly, I agree... to a certain extent. D-shaped wheels are inherently more versatile than round wheels because round wheels are better suited for rally and drifting as well as to a certain extent GT racing as well and this has been spoken by many creators. The problem with D-shaped wheels are that they are weaker when it comes to rally and drifting... but thats the thing, it's weaker and that doesn't mean its genuinely horrible for either of those things, it's just more difficult.
In an honest conclusion, D-shaped wheels are better for beginners and unless you're as tall as Yao Ming, I wouldn't recommend a 12" round-wheel for F1 (D-ring wheels are also just better for beginners because they are trying sim-racing out and they can always switch to a different wheel with how common quick-release is nowadays).
@@casteroysteI feel like you contradict yourself. A circle wheel is clearly the most versatile. If you only want to use 2 points of contact in the whole race…..then do that. But in circumstances when the wheel has to feed through your hands (rally, drift, even street racing) a circular wheel is clearly better. If you hold the wheel like a f1 driver then there is literally NO DIFFERENCE between flat bottom and round bottom. So where do you get the conclusion of flat being more versatile? It’s literally just isn’t lol
My steering wheel burned out after about a week. I have now switched to Moza and the difference is like night and day

You either get a cheap wheel and don't use it much, or you get a cheap wheel and want a better one very soon. Good to have this stepping stone in the middle for casual racers on a budget under 1000 bucks.
Exactly my experience with the G29, I got it, then immediately wanted to upgrade it, then just kinda stopped using it... Wish I would have waited for something like the moza or this to come out before getting a G29.
Does the button box work on the Xbox? What are the button mapping options like?
It does yeah, it gives you the same core/system options that the wheel has (I show those for a few seconds in the "wheel" part of the video)

Ok it’s got my attention not to expensive but how is it in ATS ( American truck simulator)
I had to return mine after getting two replacements with faulty pedals.
Other than the bad QC, the button box is almost useless, the angle is pretty high, and I dont know why they have a window in the top of the chassis. Its a decent enough midpoint between that and a full on race wheel setup.
I speced out a similar setup to replace it from Moza and with shipping it came to right at $1K, and thats not including a button box and the truck wheel Id like to get for it. So the people comparing the TB to Moza or Fanatec at a similar pricepoint are on crack.

If you think this is expensive you are in for a rude awakening. This piece of kit is absolutely junk in reality. I have a full fanatec setup with load cell pedals and everything and it’s absolutely tits. Full setup cost around $3k not including PC. You can’t get a better setup for under $10k.
Just from looking at specs I'd personally go with a R5 bundle, with loadcell pedals. But it's very cool, just feels like it's overpriced compared to Moza's.

On PC you can use any shifter you want that just plugs directly into the PC, but for Xbox you'd have to wait for an official TB option.
did u have deadzone issues?
Nothing on my end, have others had issues with the wheel? Or pedal deadzones? Only thing for me was that there's no way to set an upper deadzone for the pedals in the turtle beach software which is odd, but not really an issue because you can always do that ingame anyway.

I do wish that sim makers realize that race cars don't use leather any more. Give us Nomex! Or Alcantara.

You should test wheels with different games like Beamng or Forza Motorsports (not to be confused with the arcade Forza Horizon games).

Haven't tried it with Horizon but it worked just fine in Motorsport! Only thing was the lack of display support for a few things that Forza doesn't have anyway (like race flags)
In your opinion what would be a good upgrade that would be like a permanent solution? I play on PC.
Realistically just depends on what you're looking to get out of your equipment, and what your budget is. In sim racing you definitely get what you pay for. I think the specs on this setup are absolutely enough to last a lifetime of happy sim racing, if the long term reliability proves itself to be good. IMO the two biggest things to look for in a "good" sim setup are just a load cell pedal and direct drive base. From there everything else is just an incremental improvement.
@@HokiHoshi I've had a lot of people tell me between 10 and 15 newton meters of force is what I am looking for. What's your opinion on that?
@@krookedliptv9852 yeah that's definitely plenty! I would say personally 5-10 is enough for the majority of people, but again it really just depends on the person - you will absolutely get more detail out of a stronger wheel but I think after around 10nm you hit a point of diminishing returns.
@@HokiHoshi I'm presently on a g920 LOL. And have been on it for a couple of years. I'm sure anything would feel like an upgrade compared to that LOL. I'm willing to spend upwards of 2500 for a good set of triple pedals and wheel base. Looking for it to react as real as possible so I can get into drifting. The g920 is pretty okay for just normal road use but cannot keep up with what the wheels are actually doing in any type of spin-out scenario or drifting scenario
@@krookedliptv9852 Hey I know the feeling, one of my first wheels was a g29! If you're willing to spend a good amount, definitely don't forget things like the cockpit and monitor setup, but yeah you can definitely shoot for 10-15nm at that budget.

You said better than belt driven? I mean what ones have you used even top end like fanatec CS v2.5? thats probably the best top end thats discontinued that comes to mind. Overall i think they missed the mark on their target audience it's not a toy for kids but adults yet it looks/feels like a toy design wise and for the "entry price point" i think most people would prefer higher quality and cut screen/button box imo(perhaps make it a separate add-on).
Would definitely hope that they are already working on a V2 for this stuff, cause yeah almost all the aluminium looking parts look super low quality...

Just to clarify - "not many" still means "some". Fanatec is one brand. Simagic, Simucube, Thrustmaster, Cammus, Asetek and Moza (for now) still have no official Xbox compatibility (although Drivehub might work for some.) AFAIK pretty much the only official DD options for Xbox are Logitech or Fanatec - what I would describe as "not many options."
Also - I showed this in the video so I'm guessing you just missed it, but the V1 Race *does* have a quick release system for interchangeable wheels, I'm not sure why you think it doesn't?
The Fanatec bundle doesn't come with a load cell brake, display, or button box. The price for the 8nm upgrade with a load cell brake puts it to the same price as the turtle beach set...and then you still aren't getting a display or button box and the base is "only" 0.8nm stronger (although like I said in my own video - it does absolutely feel better)
Not trying to argue for one or the other here, the first DD base I ever used was Fanatec and I loved it! But a lot of your info is either wrong or pretty misleading

So that makes the prices closer and probably worth getting the Turtle Beach instead. So I'll admit that mistake. I looked at their site wrong and thought it included the boost kit
It comes down to everything you want. I play on PS5 and Xbox Series X. So Fanatec with their combinations allows me to play on both consoles. I'll more than likely build a PC soon for better sims, so I'll be able to game on all 3 with my setup.
The screen and buttons are cool, but, I'm not going to be staring at that screen much if I had it. Comes down to user preference in my opinion.
@@joescivic Oh for sure, there are absolutely cases where I'd recommend one over the other, and Fanatec is definitely a more established brand currently with a lot more options for upgrades etc. I just wanted to make sure that it was clear what was being offered for the price from both companies, because like you said it does kinda just come down to what you're looking to get from your equipment!
@HokiHoshi I just realized your name. Haha. I actually used your wheel settings and minor changes for FH5. It made me actually enjoy a wheel in FH5. $600 dollars for this is crazy... way too much to essentially lock yourself into an ecosystem that probably won't resell very well once you realize you screwed up. Beginner sim racers are much better off going with something like the Moza R5, R3 or similar. Cammus also has some attractive entry level bundles that include everything one needs to try it out.
i think what we really need are $100~$200 force feedback wheels.i don't know why they don't exist anymore. this have become such an elitized hobby with these huge entry barriers. what's wrong with making a "toy" wheel for people who just want to casually drive on something better than a gamepad? we need more wheels like the xbox360 ff wheel. to me that was the perfect "first" wheel. cheap, relatively competent and fun to use.
that said, as a thrustmaster tx owner of 10 years, if i had to buy a new wheel (which i don't), this would probably be it.

Fanatec wheel bases allow combinations of all...PC, PS5, and Xbox, all in the same setup. I'm surprised people don't know this. If you game on both consoles, Playstation gets their license through the wheel base, which is also PC compatible. Get an Xbox wheel/rim so you can play that combo on Xbox. Xboxngets their license from the wheel/rim.
This 7.2 NM Turtlebeach wheel and pedals is $650. Fanatec has a bundle if all you plan on playing on is Xbox and PC, with a 5 NM wheel base plus, it comes with load cell pedals, and a Mclaren GT3 wheel/rim. All for $480. That's cheaper than the TB and a stronger wheel base with the option to change out wheels/rims with the quick release. An extra $150 for a boost kit to make the wheel base 8NM

@@sideswipebl I don't think there's a single DD kit on the market that *does* come with a shifter...unless we're misunderstanding each other here. You always have to buy a shifter separate, and if you're on PC you can just buy a 3rd party shifter to use with this kit - it's exactly what I did in this video.
Edit: also - there are a good handful of entry level DD options these days. Moza R5 and R3(soon), Fanatec CSL DD, Cammus C5, etc

Tbh all Turtle Beach products are overpriced junk. I'm not saying Turtle Beach is expensive either, I'm saying other companies make better products at same or better prices. They only stay in business because of good marketing.
This wheel is bait. Its a little bit of every peripheral you'd want for sim racing, just the worst possible version of each thing. Quantity over quality.

The wheel was set to 900 degrees for the drifting! It was at 900 for everything actually lol, I should have set it lower for the GT3 but it always feels odd jumping between so many different driving styles so quickly when filming
