    Here is my long term take, I have had basically this same system for over a year, close to two years at this point. (technically not mine personally owned by my company, but I was responsible for setting up/fixing and have accumulated probably close to 500 hours on it). I work in the technology field, setting up can be a pain and if your not great with technology you might really hate yourself. Taylor states it was easy in this video and the software seems to be newer then what we have, so maybe the have made improvements at this point.
    The first major issue we ran into was motors over extending and the position sensors getting confused. This would result basically in one motor freaking out or doing nothing at all. We ended up reducing the max movement range for each motor to stop this from happening.
    Second issue we ran into was the arms that attach the motors to the seat would bend. We replaced these with stronger ones. (We had a ton of people use this some weighing over considerably more then 200 lbs)
    Third issue we ran into was the power switch on the DOF control box stopped working, (maybe 8-12 months in) this was a pretty easy fix we just replaced the power switch.
    Fourth issue was one of the arduino that control the motors seemed to fry. We have not fixed at this point. Basically whenever we turn it on now the motor will constantly spin in a circle. tried trouble shooting for hours and seems to be related to that specific port on the controller.
    Fifth issue depends on the person, but almost every single person that used this setup with VR experienced motion sickness. Even for me the first time I used it I felt really sick, but after continuing a few more times it went away. Most people at work wouldn't get past this point and we had to set up a monitor for 90% of the people that used it.
    Overall though, as stated in the video for something inside your house, not having to maintain a car, not worrying about crashing etc. This thing is an absolute blast and more then just a toy, this can be used as a tool to help you improve as a driver.

    • @WaffleShortage
      @WaffleShortage ปีที่แล้ว +17

      to the motion sickness point- if your setup was at a business and people were using it as customers/guests, it's likely that many of them didn't have much time in VR in general, which could be a bigger part of the issue than the motion rig and its software.
      I know that VR definitely took me a good while to acclimate to. it probably took me a grand total of about 10 hours of play in standing VR stuff before my eyes and brain/inner ear all kind of figured it out and I stopped getting headaches or nausea from playing more than about 20-30 minutes at a time in games where you move around in 3D space more than your real life walking around in a room-scale setup. driving a car in VR with little or no prior VR hours would probably make just about anybody feel sick, even on a $30k motion sim rig.

    • @buzzyshizzle5188

      just as the other guy replied: their motion sickness was almost guaranteed to be the VR.

      @jward0071 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ive done a tonne of VR, Ive got hundreds of hours across a variety of game types.
      But I cannot do driving VR, I get the strongest most horrible motion sickness after about 5-8 mins and I need to stop playing. its disappointing as I really wanted a setup similar to this.
      Ive read that it can get better with acclimating yourself to the setup but damn, thats a hard road, Id rather just drive my own car

    • @buzzyshizzle5188
      @buzzyshizzle5188 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@jward0071 Yeah, driving and flying VR is where you really need to acclimate. Some games that fit natural body movement or just have you stand in place don't screw with your brain as hard.
      Besides that, the setup you were on and how it was configured matters very much. Getting it "just right" is no easy task if you don't have a beastly gaming rig. Inconsistent framerates, lower framerates (like even 60fps), anti-aliasing, motion blur, input delays even if imperceptible...
      The only way to get cozy with it is to have your own headset with your own setup and it takes a couple weeks of maybe an hour a day before its second nature and not leaving you feeling a little off.

    I would recommend the DIY route, which I did.. COULDN’T be more happier! I modified the SFX-100 open source actuator and added an actual motion controller over an arduino board. I am happy so far, and rather than having 100mm of movement, I have 300mm of movement. I also went with 10 degree ball screws rather than the 5 degree ball screws it was designed with.
    Now I can have more movement when I fly around, and less movement when I am driving. DOF is really over priced when you look into DiYing your own platform. Xsimulator is out there and they have tons of useful documented builds.
    FYI, DOF as in 3DOF and 6DOF means degrees of freedom.

    So I'm curious, especially with the yaw moving your angle around, doesn't that mess with the orientation of the real wheel and pedals vs what you see in game? What I mean is the game expects you to remain in the same physical position in VR so as the seat moves around aren't you effectively moving around in the cockpit of the car and the wheels and pedals are moving out of alignment with the in game representation?

    That’s great. I wonder is it difficult to find and reach to the shift and the handbreak while you use it VR. Can you see them while you play the game with VR?

      I have vr and play assetto corsa and American truck simulator with an 18 speed transmission. you develop a memory real quickly on where the shifter and buttons and stuff are.

    You can get mounts to add keyboards to sim rigs. Basically it would be angled toward you at your 10 o'clock position (or 2 depending on your handedness lol).
