Thanks for the comments! That's not a bad idea. Might take a while to dig up some US-exclusive games and I think that most were released abroad in one way or another.
Jurassic Park On Sega Genesis. The game sold over a million copies and is a solid side-scroller with great variety in the levels, and you can play as a velociraptor! It's a bit slow and the first level has jumps that are impossible to get through without taking some damage, but it's a great game.
Thanks and Merry Christmas! I wish I would have been able to play the first Goonies game. I remember the Nintendo 10 in 1 cabinets but I don't ever recall the Goonies game. At that time I was always focused on the Mario Bros. one up trick.
Thanks guys for another fantastic year. Game Sack continues to be highly informative and entertaining; definitely the most underrated show on TH-cam. Merry Christmas to you both from Ireland, can't wait to see what you've got for 2013!
Another great episode, guys! Nice to see such a wide net when considering licensed titles - celebrity endorsements, racing, etc. Daytona has one of the strangest, best soundtracks in gaming. :) "Daytonaaaaaa," "Rolling Staaaaaaaaart," "G-A-M-E-O-V-E-R" - all of it nutty but so damned cool. Loved the great comparison of Daytona games, Joe. I've tried several home versions, but my fave is still the first, fugly Saturn release. Probably 'cause it was freebie when I bought my Saturn system.
Perhaps. If anything we strive to have more Sega and other coverage as everyone else on the internet already does Nintendo (especially the NES) to death. But we do have to have Nintendo stuff as well. At the same time we need to be realistic and acknowledge that not all Sega games are pure gold. But you probably haven't seen too many of our videos as I give the NES and SNES lots of grief. Dave gives Sega grief. But when something is clearly bad, we'll both admit it.
Gremlins 2, a forgotten NES gem. Had amazing cinematically at the time and it was a great game too. Made a few game magazine covers if I recall. Great game. Us soft hit out of the park with that game and Batman on the NES.
We won't change our opinions to gain a single subscriber. That would damage the integrity of our show. If we did such a thing, we'd just be making a show about what people want to hear or already thing and that wouldn't be interesting for the viewer or for us to make. Not everyone is gonna agree with everyone else on everything and that's life. I guess we'll have to do without your subscription if something so petty will prevent you from enjoying everything else.
I own Gremlins 2 on a bunch of different formats. Even laserdisc. Love the movie. Like all franchises, I would say the second is my favorite but the first is the best.
I just found your guys channel a few days ago (I think it was Radical Reggie I heard mention your channel), I just wanted to say I've been watching episode after episode and I've enjoyed every single video so much. Has really made me feel better watching and has opened my eyes to many classic games I've missed. Thanks a ton guys for all your hard work, you both have amazing personalities and I just love the vids.
I dunno, but Dave seems to like it. Apparently my family did that as well but the generation before mine saw to it that that particular tradition ended.
Of course it is. In fact Sega had to get the Daytona rights from Hasbro in order to release the Dreamcast version because Hasbro owned them at the time.
Great episode, guys. One odd but fun licensed game is Major League on the Famicom, it's based on the movie of the same name and even has a likeness of Charlie Sheen. Also, Heavey Metal: Geo Matrix on the Dreamcast, it's based on the Heavey Metal comics series, really cool.
That's AWESOME how you guys wrecked the car in ALL versions of the game AT THE SAME TIME IN THE SAME PLACE in the Dinosaur Canyon Track! Very Cool! That corner right before the tunnel has always been a tricky one. Haha.
I'm from Argentina and here we had the famicom as nes, i have to say that the goonies 1 was a really great game i didn't know that it was a sequel. I definitely have to give it a try. A recommendation for a licensed game that doesn't suck is true lies in the sega megadrive, i had so much fun with that one back on the day. Thank you guys, your reviews are by far the best ones on the internet, very professional and objective i'm allways looking forward for your next video. Happy Holidays!!!
Also, another thing: I actually found an arcade with Daytona USA 2 this summer! I don't think the tracks were as good as the ones in the first game but, man, the music and the controls were incredible!
The Daytona trick, hold up and rotate the stick to steer, is so genius yet so simple I feel stupid for not having figured it out 20 years ago. It's a great way to tone down the twitchiness and will likely work on a lot of racing games.
Thumbs up for mentioning Goonies 2 (one of my favorite NES games!), as well as name-dropping Tim and Geoff Follin as composers for SNES Super Off-Road. Technically, that game was licensed as well, just not with Ironman. Instead, it was a Toyota license! Everything in the SNES version is branded with the Toyota logo, and the shop music is an arrangement of the "I love what you do for me, Toyota" jingle. Other NES licensed favorites: Willow, and Spy vs. Spy. Willow, in particular, was amazing.
You guys are awesome! Your show is incredible and deserves much more views. I discover it recently and I can't stop watching it, and of course, I subscribed. Keep it up! Greetings from Greece. PS: Would you guys consider to make an episode about good games that released only in USA and not in Europe and vice versa?
Merry Christmas Game Sack. The Biker Mice From Mars racing game on the SNES. That was definitely my favorite licensed game at the time and I found myself playing it often when I just wanted to race and have fun killing an hour or so on the weekends as a kid.
This show is the best! And I'm just play trolling ;) but when you talked about the "marble" games not having a story, you guys even said "but who really cares about a story in a marble game". And thus, you classified the game!!! ;) hehehe ;) I love you guys and hope you never stop!!!
As far as great licensed games go, Ghost in the Shell for PS1 is a fantastic action game with great controls, smooth visuals, great presentation with the voice actors from the movie, just all around great to play. I think it's legitimately one of the best games for its system.
Good ep, guys, merry X-mas to you guys too. Thee are definitely many good licensed games out there (Duck Tales and Batman or the NES come to mind). You should continue adding volumes to this topic. See you next year!
My local mall arcade had Daytona 2 at some point. Probably when it was pretty new, because I hadn't even HEARD about it when I saw the thing! I was blown away! I'm probably mistaken, but in my mind it looked a lot better than your video of it. I played it only a couple of times, and it was gone not long after (although I didn't go to that arcade all that often). I later ended up working there, and was friends with the manager. I told him one day "I remember when you guys had Daytona 2, I thought that was awesome because I had never seen it or heard of it before." And he was like "What? I don't remember that game." It seemed to vanish as quickly as it had appeared. Definitely not the staying power of the first game. I was always sad that the game didn't seem to get the same love as the original.
@@Gatorade69 The footage looks fine, except that it's much more aliased and not nearly as sharp as I seem to remember it being. It was running on Model 3 hardware after all, so it should resemble something as sharp as the Dreamcast version of Daytona. Joe's video is from 2012 so I'm not sure what state the emulator was at that time, but it looks like the resolution is fairly low as well. I just fired it up under Supermodel and it looks every bit as sharp as I remember it.
Bugs Bunny: Lost In Time (PC & PlayStation 1) and Bugs Bunny & Taz: Time Busters (PC & PlayStation 1). Maybe Taz: Wanted (PC, Gamecube, PS2, & Xbox) also.
Movie-to-game adaptations started to get good in the mid 90's as they became more tailored to the source material as opposed to just re-skinning a platform or shooting game. Die Hard Trilogy was great, with three separate games each based on one of the films. Two other really good adaptations were Alien Trilogy and The Warriors, but unfortunately those games gave me motion sickness and I was unable to finish them.
Capcom's Disney games (every single one of them), Sunsoft's Batman games, Konami's TMNT games, Michael Jackson Moonwalker, Judge Dredd (SNES), Michael Jordan Chaos in the Windy City, Capcom's Marvel games, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Super Star Wars, Injustice. The original Goonies game originally came out on the MSX. I think you guys should really do an episode on the MSX and MSX 2, it has some amazing games!
Some "dial-up only" games could be made to work with the broadband adapter with a bit of fiddling. I was able to play Phantasy Star Online using the BBA despite the US release only having dial-up support. I cannot say whether that was the case for Daytona USA.
Birthday Blowout has that very distinct Kemco nes sound. Play Shadowgate, Deja Vu, or Uninvited then Birthday Blowout. Some of my favorite licensed games: TMNT 3 for the NES Ghostbusters on the 360/PS3 Darkwing Duck for the NES Great video guys
The emulated version of Daytona 2 you mention at 18:12 is almost arcade perfect, especially if you play it with a proper steering wheel. I don't get why you think the emulation isn't good enough?
Game Sack Sounds like you might be using an older version of Supermodel, I'd heartily recommend checking out the latest WIP 0.3 version. There were a few areas in the Advanced and Expert course where frame-rate would judder for me in the official 0.2 release, but these have been sorted out now, I can get a consistent 60 fps on all the tracks. The developers have also managed to get all the specular lighting effects working now, giving the cars that extra level of added shiny-ness that was in the arcade, as well as a few options to improve the audio and an added optional widescreen mode. It really is pretty awesome, if you're a fan of the arcade version I'd definitely recommend updating your version of Supermodel.
MrThunderwing Yes it's true the performance on version 0.2 wasn't so good but at version 0.3 wip it's amazing what a huge jump made the performance and even the widescreen and upscaling that is amazing. It's sadly that Daytona Usa 2 didn't got a port for the dreamcast the same goes for scud race that didn't got a sega dreamcast release. I love this two games.
Another fine video. That Rambo 3 game reminded me quite a bit of Mercs. Good stuff. Just played through the original Neversoft Spider Man on my Dreamcast. Used to own it for the PS1 back in the day and it remains very playable with surprisingly good writing and pacing. Same studio that went on to do the Tony Hawk games.
I agree with you about the original Daytona for the Saturn. I own all versions of the game except Daytona 2 arcade . There is something about that game that makes me enjoy playing to this day. It still has a good sense of speed great controls and awesome music. I always liked the blue car on Saturn mode!
Yeah dude I think it must be the videos you've seen :-) these guys love to talk about both Sega and Nintendo. The whole gag is that one of them always roots for Nintendo, the other always roots for Sega. They're always fighting over which version of a multi-platform game is better (overall they USUALLY agree in the end :D) but the guys are always clear and honest in giving their reasons). They do cover plenty of Sega/Genesis games though, don't worry!
TRON 2.0: Killer App is a really enjoyable isometric action game for the GBA. It also does a great job of breaking up the action with light cycle, tank, and minigame segments.
i can already see the comments about goldeneye 007 coming in... as for my pick, the tony hawk skateboarding games[save for ride/shred] is downright awesome! the control is in the category of "minutes to learn, lifetime to master" as you'll always wanting to get that higher score/combo. while the graphics of the older games in the series haven't aged well, the music has. easily some of the best licensed soundtracks out there. i'd say go & buy the hd version on xbla, psn & steam for the $15!
Really dig the show. I think it would be cool if you guys did some hour long specials like covering the Sega vs Nintendo console war, or even make a series covering the evolution of gaming.
Good list. I always remember playing the arcade version of Off Road about 25 years ago in the mall. I should look into find a SNES copy, you're right, it does look like the best of the bunch.
Holy crap. You guys just legitimately blew my mind. I had no idea that there was an original Goonies game! I'd entirely bought into the notion that Goonies II was some ill conceived tie in meant to serve as a sequel to the film.
Goonies II has been on my radar for a long time - ever since reading about it in The Official Nintendo Player's Guide, actually. (Nintendo's guides were awesome, Dave - definitely deserving of an echo reverb.) And it was cool to see the SMS and Genesis Rambo games get some screen time. The SMS games, especially, as they're kinda under-rated 'cause most folks don't know about 'em, it seems. As for future episode ideas - howabout more licensed Konami games? Some good stuff there.
If you guys ever talk about this subject again, I suggest that you talk about the Adventure Time games, especially Explore the Dungeon Because I Don't Know. That game is pure dungeon crawling fun!
I, personally, like Shrek 2 on the GBA (I remember playing the Xbox version at a friend's house when I was a kid, and enjoying it. I think we played through the entire game in one night.), Eragon on the DS, which actually follows the book better than the movie, and Harry Potter and the chamber of Secrets on GBA and Gamecube.
Some games I remember, SNES: Alien 3, Batman Returns, X-men Mutant Apocalypse, NBA Jam T.E., Suzuka 8 hours, N64: Goldeneye, GCN: The Two Towers/The Return of the King, King Kong, Hulk Ultimate Destruction, X-men Legends 1 and 2, Rogue Squadron II...
At the time of this writing they have 167k subs, which isn't awful, but you're right in that they do deserve more. I only started watching them recently and wish I had found this channel and supported earlier.
I had Rambo Part 2 on the C64 as a kid, and it was brutal! But the music was great. Awesome video, as usual guys \m/
These guys' channel is ridiculously good. Great to see you here, Jesus!

Rambo on the sega master system is one of my earliest memories of playing video games. Thanks for covering this guys!
I always remember in arcades hearing "daytona" from across the room. fantastic game
We talked about Duck Tales in a previous episode about Disney games.

To be honest, I've never really been a fan of licensed games, but one I did really enjoy was the Mega Drive version of Alien 3.

(Nintendo's guides were awesome, Dave - definitely deserving of an echo reverb.)
And it was cool to see the SMS and Genesis Rambo games get some screen time. The SMS games, especially, as they're kinda under-rated 'cause most folks don't know about 'em, it seems.
As for future episode ideas - howabout more licensed Konami games? Some good stuff there.
The Japanese-only Back to The Future II game for the SNES is one of the best examples of a perfect licensed game on a 16-bit console.
If you guys ever talk about this subject again, I suggest that you talk about the Adventure Time games, especially Explore the Dungeon Because I Don't Know. That game is pure dungeon crawling fun!
We did the NES one also. Watch every episode until you find it!! or look at our XLS file.
CurtisAlfeld Eragon on the DS sucked, though I am glad it followed the book more.
loving the ghostbusters genesis music at the beginning noticed that straight away
The Rambo where he helps the missionaries in Laos? I forget the country but that is one of the most violent movies I’ve ever seen
I can't believe they only have over 100k subs :(
At the time of this writing they have 167k subs, which isn't awful, but you're right in that they do deserve more. I only started watching them recently and wish I had found this channel and supported earlier.
amerika* Their sub count is going up faster than it used to. As I'm writing this they're at 170,234 subs.
