Shaun White got a skateboarding game because he was actually a pro skateboarder prior to snowboarding. He’s a multiple gold medal X-games medalist, Tony Hawk even mentored him when he was a child.
@@c0rruptrealitysomeone far more relevant than you could ever hope to be
@@c0rruptrealityGoogle him then
@@c0rruptrealityGenuine question. Do you not know how to use Google?
Tony also snowboarded forever ago to varying degrees. It's almost like the two sports are intertwined along with other "extreme" sports and even motorsports somewhat (Travis pastrana, etc)
@@c0rruptreality You think you did something there, but if you don't know Shaun White, thats because you don't know skateboarding like you think.
Disney’s Extreme Skate Adventure is so underrated it didn’t even get mentioned. Lol
It was on the THPS4 engine and had characters and maps from Toy Story, Lion King, and Tarzan. The maps were unique and because it was built on the THPS engine it played really well too.
I was seriously thinking the same thing.
I enjoyed it a lot lmao
Great soundtrack aswel
yea i was so disappointed
People always sleep on Shaun White’s skate career. He scored 2 golds in 2007 and 2011 and 2 silvers in the X Games for skateboarding, he just hit massive fame for his top performance in snowboarding, particularly in the Olympics.
He was always a good skater though
I loved Tony hawk underground 2. Felt like I was playing a skateboard game and in an episode of jackass at the same time
That's pretty much it's premise lol. Jackass was peak famous at the time
I wish we got a real sequel and they save the jackass game for a different entry
the thing about Skater XL is i never played it before but skated for years, and easily and intuitively picked up the game instantly because the way you move your feet in the game is just like you would in real life. It has actually made me a better skater in the fact it helped me remember the different names for tricks when switching between nollie and regular, i.e. backside flip vs nollie backside flip.
I love how the video is pretty much structured like a Skate game history video but then just turns into a podcast chat towards the end 😂
The THPS games got me into skateboarding . I remember landing my first kickflip. Also, breaking my ankle . Good times
I grew up playing all the Tony Hawk games and American Wasteland , Underground , and Pro Skater 3 were my favorites . Even going back now is the best nostalgic feeling
I played the DS version of skate it as a kid and I remember the touch screen controls were surprisingly good and captured the essence of the analog stick controls. it was pretty intuitive and I had a lot of fun.
I love these "history of skateboarding games" videos because even though some topics unavoidably overlap betweeen them, it's fun seeing each creators individual takes on each game and the way they structure the storytelling. I loved the fact you aknowledged the how underrated downhill jam is, I always thought it got way too much hate lol
I really liked project 8! Slept on in my opinion. It did the classic Tony Hawk formula really good. I had it in PS2 and it pushed that thing to its limits. Game was gorgeous. Soundtrack kicked ass.
I had a serious love hate relationship with the Xbox 360 version. I never knew it got released on older consoles with the American wasteland engine till i watched this video, im sure it was better on ps2
YOOO PROJECT 8 MENTION!!! I had the PSP version as a kid!
The main problems with Session and Skater XL is they’re supposed to skate sims first and foremost. The thing the hardcore fan base wanted was a more realistic experience to make cool clips and video parts. The games over all have amazing controls, graphics and models but there’s no gameplay loop or any kind of objective other than exploration.
Minor correction. From Ride until THPS5, the franchise was no longer developed by Neversoft. They were made by Robomodo.
Man, the tangent about the razor scooter handlebars hit me right in the childhood. 😂
Love that you started back in 1896, no one else talks about those skating games
I love how luke said he saw American locations in tv and movies and the example was Beverly Hills chihuahua 😂 great video y’all!
Everyone knows it's a classic. 😂
Touchgrind on mobile I always thought was a fun skateboarding game that felt a lot like playing Skate and tech deck at the same time
The Shawn white skateboarding game is actually pretty good. The entire world is gray and you can basically paint the world by doing tricks lol kind of odd but it was really cool.
and the soundtrack was amazing! My favourite level was vandalising the Museum! it was very fun
@@kawaiiqueee3489 I loved it lol such a unique game
Riders republic is definitely worth the price, at least if you get it on sale. Skateboarding is a separate dlc, but even without it the game is amazing. It's the best game to just come home and relax after a long day, and it is a lot easier to get into than tony hawks pro skater. Not to mention it has snowboarding, skiing, mountain biking, road cycling, bmx, snowmobiles, jetpacks, and more.
This video has a lot of inaccuracies. One that really sticks out is that there WAS a port of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 on the iPhone. It was delisted a while ago, but they did have one. I still have it on my iPhone 3GS.
Yeah I noticed some errors too. Some stuff seemed like good research and other stuff seemed not so good.
Also, 720° was made by Atari Games.
Underground was good, but UG2 was INSANELY good, loved the sound, controls, story, real life celebs that tied into the story, giant maps, walking, tricks, graphics, and skate history kinda feel to it and showing how a new skater rises up through the ranks
@@kbottrill1I feel this man underground 2 was what I played first loved it then years later played underground and the story and everything about the way it flowed was done flawless
It takes 5 seconds to google and see that Shaun white was a professional skateboarder for many years lol
Not released yet, but Olliefrog: Toad Skater is another indie inspired by the older Tony Hawk games. The demo is definitely worth a try.
How to try to plug your game without actually plugging your game
American Wasteland was great and seems underrated. At the time, it was advertised as having no loading screens between levels with the Xbox 360 graphics. Which was pretty awesome because it was a step into an open world Tony Hawk game. Around the time it came out the emo scene was very popular, so the soundtrack was a banger. The addition of old school tricks, and the cameos from the o.g skaters from lords of dog town was the cherry on top.
It was the peak in terms of gameplay for me. The addition of a Bike, parkour and side missions were really cool. The "loading" zones between the levels weren't that bad either as you could skate through them. The story was also decent. Only thing missing was the create-a-goal from THUG2.
Something about the accidental typo of 1986 flashing in front of me as 1896 tickles my brain lol
Just a quarter of a way through this video, it's just unlocking a bunch of old memories of my childhood playing many hours of Tony Hawk games (played 2, 3, American Wasteland) and other sport games like SSX, Matt Hoffman's BMX and ATV etc. Simpler times.
Also the cereal boxes having demos of games need to come back!
*Do you remember the PC game that came in the cereal Chex called "Chex Quest"? It played and looked the same way as old school FPSs like Doom and you had spoons & forks for weapons*
@Butt--Head I don't. I'm a 1995 kid, but that sounds super dope! Now you got me on a quest to find a physical copy or maybe I can find a rom of it somewhere.
@@ZeroMugen I was born in 1986, it was released in the 90s
@@ZeroMugen yeah I was addicted to it and played it a lot as a kid, it wouldn't hold up to well now but if showing it's age isn't something that would bother you I'd go for it, I refound it years ago online but can't remember if it was just a rom or the actual game file
No love for Top Skater? Dicking around on that thing at my local Gameworks was a core memory of my childhood
lol it’s soo funny seeing you talk about the razor game. I remember playing it at the aunt and uncle’s house with my cousin in their attic. It was okay? But man, the memories
You missed Skate or Die: Tour de Thrash on the Gameboy and Skate or Die 2 on the NES in your list. Skate or Die 2 is the reason I got into skateboard.
I swear ive been waiting for a video like this
Tech decks and fingerboarding is alive and thriving, pretty solid communities involved as well and is regularly getting the spotlight from bigger companies and influences
Riders Republic is a fantastic time and i recommend them to anyone who enjoys a nice arcady extreme sports game. The skateing is done surprisingly well given how the game was so originally focused on mountain bikeing and snowboarding.
Skate and Destroy is an amazing game. The learning curve was a bit tough but once you got good it's gameplay was incredibly satisfying. It would have been great to see a sequel with some of the wrinkles ironed out
Mtv sports skateboarding was my first skateboard game.. good times
Grind Session is flames, man still one of my favorites! Even with owning and having played all of the THPS games
Very good video, i enjoyed it a lot
man, i thought i new everything about skateboarding games, but yall put me on to the spongebob game and the goofy skating game
Bro I had the scooter game and I didn't know it was a blockbuster exclusive I just remembered playing it and none else knows what I'm talking about
session and skater xl are skateboarding games made for people who skate irl, and they are AMAZING games for their target audience. I feel like people who don't like them are just mad because "it's too hard." but they are so rewarding to play when you improve and start landing harder and harder tricks. the games have the same appeal as real skateboarding which is the amazing feeling of landing something difficult that took many many tries. I don't think they miss the mark at all and they cater to their target audience very well. especially session, it's made by skaters for skaters
Weirdly I would agree it's for irl skaters. I am an outlier as I skated for a few years in my teens but haven't for 15+ years. I had a friend try it and hate it. He came over and i was just skating around and he saw it was possible. He can now do most basic things and even call what he is trying to do. I have more friends who want to play Session but won't get it themselves because they don't want to learn the game alone.
Exactly what I came to say, he doesn’t understand the main appeal of session and skater xl at all
How do you not know that Shaun white had almost as many skate medals as snowboarding medals
Had no idea! 😳
Session and, to a lesser extent, Skater XL are great. The former is building More to do, and more grab related stuff, but its in Early Access which wasnt mentioned in the vid. Also, Shaun White is one of the greatest vert skaters ever lol. He is multitalented to an extreme degree, like Travis Pastrana etc.( Edit: and Tony Hawk has snowboarded his entire life! The two sports are very intertwined, along with BMX and scooters and even some motorsports really) ive skated my whole life since even before THPS1, so a variety of approaches have been appealing to me other than just arcade high score games i guess.
session is one of the most underrated skateboarding games i love it i would check it out if u like realistic skating and it’s kinda cheap and it’s constantly updated all the time
crazy y'all didn't talk about tru skate on mobile, that game is a lot of fun to mess around in
Loved the video! Would like to see a "snowboarding games over the years" video
1:56 Skate and Destroy sounds like a crossover thrash album by a band who only released demos and that was it.
Elijah, you should make a video about all the snowboarding video games
Love the video
I saw the typo right at the start and hit the liek button so fast ofbeidbeidjjd
It was a funny thing, really lmao
Thx for the video !
I played Tony Hawk RELIGIOUSLY, and me and my brother bonded so hard over it. American Wasteland IMO, WAS and still IS the best one
I was skeptical about Riders Republic but I had a BLAST with it for maybe 15-20 hours!
I remember getting American Wasteland for Christmas, it was one of the best gifts ever
there was a skateboarding game called "grind sessions" on the Ps1. used to play that and the tony hawk games frequently but was more drawn to that game for some reason.
Man I would kill for a underground 1 and 2 remaster just like they did with pro skater.
Tech Deck actually had a higher rez PC game back in the day that was actually pretty solid. Wasn’t expecting much and was actually pretty blown away as a kid!
damn bro, i played 90% of the stuff you showed and the few of the old ones i missed i can play on my google pixel. fucking love skating games so much .cant wait for skate 4. sessions and skater XL are boss RN but so much more coming AND Rider Repud got skating now too!
I've never had the balance to skateboard irl (excessive inner ear fluid throws off my equilibrium), but I loved the Tony Hawk series. I played it through to the Xbox 360 before stopping when they were showing off the stupid skateboard peripheral
I still own my PC copy of goofy's extreme skateboarding, loved that game
Not a skateboarding game but the Surfs Up movie tie in game was a banger
0:17 1896. I didn’t know that this game was that old 😂.
Tony hawk underground was a very specific time. but seeing it here hit twice. not only remembering those games and the era but seeing woolies playthrough. nothing lasts forever i guess.
Skate it on ds is fire, not like 2 or 3, but for it only being that game, it played really good
Some of the game boy advance ports of tony hawk were done by vicarious vision, who of course were behind the 1+2 remake
Riders republic is worth it if you enjoy just messing around attempting new trick or replaying events with different gear
Loved 2xtreme ans 3xtreme!
16:48 yoooo it’s Little Woolz!
5:44 I'm gonna go off topic but is this Denji Sentai Megaranger's opening theme song? OMG, it is! :O Was not expecting Super Sentai music to be featured in a video based on of my favorite video game series. (From 5:44 to 8:03)
Man I can’t wait for skate 4
Straight up skipping Pro Skater 3 is a crime. I don't understand why this game never gets enough respect. It had so many cool levels like the cruise ship and secret skaters like wolverine and darth maul. I played every tony hawk from pro skater 2 through underground 2 except pro skater 4, so pro skater 3 was that game for me on the ps2 generation. it was my favorite tony hawk next to underground 2
They covered it briefly.. I grew up on THPS3 so yeah it's the best. I borrowed Underground 2 from my brother's friend and was amazed there was skitching! That's all I did 😂
I remember my grandma had the only computer in my family and i played the goofy skating game demo over and over
0:16 thought I was about to see former president William McKinley nailing a kickflip
that would be a cool idea for a skate game
Tony hawk's underground was my personal favorite and even to this very day! I hope it can get the remake treatment but well have to see one day
Imagine underground 1+2
@@bobndomleonardi would be amazing to see the old locations in higher resolution
I'm grateful for the Skate games cause the 3rd one introduced me to Animal Collective.
The tony hawk DS games are pretty cool ! Totally worth playing them !
Pls give it a try !!!!
13:36 I had the original razr scooter. It was like 200F$.
My friend and I found one on the street that we rode around for a year or 2. We called it Scoots of course. Hockey tape worked well for grips!
I don't know where you're getting the date for Thrasher: Skate and Destroy's release. It came out in late November for both the US and Europe,, not late September.
THUG and THUG2 were game changers as a kid. That shit was AMAZING - I'm not a great gamer but those games were fun and I beat 'em and used to play them religiously with friends. I thank Tony Hawk games for showing me great music as a kid.
1896 be like: I hope this Zelda game catches on 90 years.
I briefly attempted Shred on the PS3, and Ride on the Wii a few years ago. Whilst Ride did not seem to work no matter how you played it, Shred was actually playable, and worked better with the game after accidental fire damage to the 4x sensors.
Always thought proving ground was an underrated game. Hadnt played a tony hawk game in a couples years when i played it on 360 and i thought it was a banger. I liked the idea behind 3 different types of skaters for the story mode as well. Game maybe was executed poorly in places but was still a solid tony hawk game. Skate 2 and 3 will always be loved as well
Playing Session while i watch this.
I love Session, it's pretty close to the feeling of real skating. And that what it is about. Yes, you have a thin story to earn money and new stuff, but Session is made for simulation, creativity and filming and the guys from creature studios do this well.
I started in the 90ies with skateboard games and skating.
1986? I thought the game came out in 1896.
I thnk the concept of shaunwhite skateboarding was awesome
Project 8's trailer says it itself reguarding the new engine, being "rebuilt from the ground up", which is true for the Next Gen versioms.
Also, about 720°, it's technically supposed to be pronounced 7 20, at least that's how I've always heard some say it.
Project 8 is Tony Hawk's skate team in the game Tony Hawk's Project 8 that is a main part of the games story. It doesn't mean it is the 8th game.
Research Shaun White... you'll understand his skateboarding after that... it's how we first became to know of him.
Cool will look into it
man..these games were part of the reason i started skating when i was 6. in had a ps2 at the time and had every tony hawk game for it. my favorite was american wasteland and my least was proving grounds :/ i would play these games religious and skate with my neighbors almost every day. me being like 9 and learning to ollie was awesome. luckily, i had other neighborhood kids who were 14 and would actually teach me tricks. life was good back then..
tony hawk pro skater 2 was actually released for Ios, sadly it has been taking out of Appstore though
Way back in 2000 I got a ps1 demo disc with Grind Session. It wasn't as good as Tony Hawk but it was pretty awesome and I'd recommend it.
bomb rush cyberfunk is right THERE
16:48 it's lil woolz!!!
Shaun white acatbording was pretty good and id love a remake
I think you forgot Tony Hawks Downhill Jam
Was actually fun as hell
Bro the whole bit about Shawn white not being a skateboarder 😂😂😂 … I mean just type his name google or TH-cam hahahaha
MTV SKATEBOARDING was brilliant. I loved the stund modus. The only shty fact was.. the rotation control was stiff... :)
Skater xl is the best for me. skated for years and that was the most realistic skate game ever on console. All they needed to do is the fix the moon gravity a bit add maps n gear and I would of still been playing it
Skate and Destroy is the best skate game of the early era
Lol I had street skater and all the thps games lol even 2xtreme xD
The razor game i purchased from Walmart. I own it for dreamcast and ps1 and neither has the blockbuster stamp
Rocket sloth has evolved to click bait, complete with misspelled title 🖤
Does the scooter game have a feature where you fling it round and hit yourself in the shin?
1896?… dang skateboarding games out date skateboarding itself.
