What's also interesting to note is the direction of the run in Marseille. Jak mentions in his video that he always turns to the left from the starting point, wallrides the building, jumps off to grind the dumpsters and goes on to score in the bowl area, eventually looping around the course. This is the exact same route I have learned back during my first experiences with the THPS2 demo, way back in 2000, and it's still what I do whenever I play this level. I find this really interesting, given that I'm from Poland, and Jak is from the land down under. It seems to me that there is a kind of "natural flow" in this level (and maybe others) that influenced players all around the world simultaneously.
@@PanekPL that was also my line through the level - it's testament to the level design that it was able to subtly move players towards these objects and understand the relationships between them. I feel Marseilles is overlooked too much in THPS lists. I put in countless hours in this level on a PC demo disk before getting the full game. Swinging Utters Five Lessons Learned synced perfectly with the 2 minute time limit - everything felt in perfect harmony.

Number 63 san Diego is an amazing map thank you sir,, the mid section is one if not the best acid drop area you can perform all series I loved playing that map
@@xmikerx666 Yeah, I clearly didn't step back to ask "Is this thing too hard?" It was a new mechanic at the time (the slalom/gates goal type), and the snake run seemed like such a perfect place for it! But even when I watch those videos, I wonder what I was thinking. I should have left it to a series of much simpler/wider gates. That 3rd pass is brutal. Otherwise, I loved designing that level. One of the more organic/curvy levels that I was able to do (not everything was a clean, straight line).

20:24 small correction: There's multiple tricks in the GBC tony hawk but they're hardly known and most players discover them on accident.
The air tricks (A button) are:
left or right - Indy
up or down - Stalefish
down-left - Japan Air
down-up - Method
right-down - Tailgrab
As a bonus, and I had no clue about this until I looked it up, there were also grind tricks in the game. If you did similar button combos you could get even more points when grinding
down-B - 50/50 grind
left-right-B - Boardslide
down-left-B - Smith

Bro, venice beach is an iconic level for 3 main reasons, (along with countless others) 1. Its a real life skatespot that skaters have shredded since the beginning of skateboarding, and is in nearly very major 90s skate video. 2. The acenic nature of the level with the graffitti walls, the small round benches, and LA beaches right behind you. And 3. Ollie the bum
Like jack says in the video, have the location base on a real life location doesn't automatically make it a great level at all. Even if VB is the level has those things, the flaws are still exist

For me this was my favourite level. And looking back on it I can see why, it's the most hidden skatepark within a real looking environment that you can literally combo around the map. In this video they didn't mention the Side alley with rails and 2 ramps where I would personally go for the highest possible scores. I'd love to see this map brought to the new game.
That frat alley was the bestncombo spot in ant game for me thps 4 will always be my favorite of all time
Mall > Downhill Jam . By a landslide too.
The mall flows so smoothly, with tons of different ways to combo from start to finish. There’s no area that feels too narrow. There’s no moments of having to force awkward landings to avoid bailing.
Downhill Jam is pretty much the exact opposite. It doesn’t flow smoothly at all. There’s not many different ways to combo from start to finish. The majority of the level feels too narrow. And there’s tons of moments where you have to force awkward landings to avoid bailing.
That’s all (: great video anyway dude. The dedication is A+ and it shows.

I persoanlly thought either Alcatraz or New Orleans was going to be #1. I know that I would personally put either of them there, but that's just cuz those are two of the stages I've played the most. Hit a 1.2 billion combo in New Orleans back when I played this game for literally an entire summer while only stopping to use the bathroom and occasionally sleep
Edit; after seeing #1, I realize that I 100% agree with you. It was extremely fun using the Moon Gravity cheat to jump up the middle building and then fall in through the middle :^)

As someone whos been skating almost 20 years, and was never a video game guy, but played almost all of the thps game, I have much love and respect for all you gamers who put in the time, love, and dedication to do these compilation videos of the games, and so awesome y'all enjoyed the games as much as we all did! We understand trying a trick over and over, so its amazing seeing you guys put in just as much time as some people do while real life skating to present us with cool content like you, oddheader, or radratvideo and more put together that can stoke us all up👍👍💓💓
Yeah I mean I know some skaters will cringe at gamers who look at these types of games but have never actually played the sport but regardless just like Oddheader said in his ranked Tony Hawk Games video "I'm more of a Gamer than a Skater so I'm gonna be look at these more from a Gamer perspective rather than it's representation of the sport" and I also feel this way with like for example in Rad Rat's video of how Tony Hawk's hardflips are always wrong and while I can see that but for me it's just a small thing and like I said I know some skaters will cringe at me saying that and they're people who say that "Oh this should be ranked higher because it's based on an iconic skating location and while I do think that's cool but honestly it's should be more than just that because Levels are so subjective to the point where some levels appeal to some people over others and for me being Iconic should not always mean that it should be the best level because to me like take World 1-1 in the original Super Mario Bros I mean sure it's so iconic to the point where any gamer will know what it is but for me that should not always be the case and back to the skating bit I mean I think it would be cool to skate IRL but I don't want to risk breaking bones and I know you should just skate within your own limits but regardless it's the main reason why Underground 1 is my favorite in the series despite having some missions that are not related to skating like Driving Cars
Regardless many people including myself love the Tony Hawk series from their addicting gameplay and soundtracks and nothing else and sorry to the skaters who actually read this comment
@@poleon2003 completely understandable, as with something like ranking the levels, a lot of skateboard tricks is subjective on the matter of ranking. Where i would say some of those bowsers castle levels are crazier, some might regard level 1-1 as the best from its simplistic nature and well rounded ness, as with skating someone might see me nollie heelflip crook a ledge and think thats crazy amazing, but since im trash at kickflips nollieheelcrooks are easier for me so when i see that guy just do a nice kickflip im just as impressed. Leaving the conclusion gaming and skating are more like artforms than sports in certain regards which is pretty cool. Agreed undergroud 1 was probably my favorite too, i didnt mind the driving or walking because the storyline was actually pretty great. Only reason i wanted to skateboard was because after getting thps1 of n64 it looked fun, and can confirm falling is the worst part haha, breaking bones is quite rare, though your shins will get hit repetitively learning kickflips haha. And it sounds weird but its probably like gaming the hardest part is just getting the hang of everything your first 2 years, then you adapt to new games way quicker as time goes on, with skating it seems super slow and like "oh i suck" but since its super fun like gaming, after a couple years your like "woah wait im getting alright at this" and not even realize it haha
