The brush in overlay blend mode is real game changer. Thank you so much. I have never been really happy or successful in extracting objects from their background, but now I think I may have a bit more sucess.
Small tip for the panning with the mouse: you can also hold the middle mouse button.
Works with a pen too if you assign it to one of the buttons.
Great tip with the overlay blendmode btw. I never would've thought about using that in a mask layer
Thanks for the tip, Michele! Honestly, I don't really use the pen buttons (neither a mouse) but maybe I should haha. Cheers!
Huge thanks, the overlay fix for the edges is just what I needed.
You’re more than welcome - Happy I could help! 👊🏼
Watch the whole video but the last part is the best tip ever for Affinity Photo!!!! Thanks!!!!
That’s why you should always watch my vids till the end.. 😏 Glad you learned something new! 🙌
Thank you. Useful
Glad it was helpful! 🙌
You have to select "new layer" in the "output" selection on the bottom of the pop up refine window.
Thanks for the tip! Yea I always forget that function, I’m used to do it manually afterwards and didn’t want to re-record the whole video because of that. But your way is the way to go indeed! 🔥
Hello IAMRENSI, very good excellent tutorial 🔝🔝🔝👏🎬👍
Thanks Diego! Glad you enjoyed the tutorial! 🙌🏼
thank u so much! i struggled a lot before
You’re welcome! Glad it helped! ☺️
The overlay trick DOES have one issue, Do not set overlay in your layers panel, it will not work, But set it from above and it works on both sides of the mask by switching colors.
Good call! In the layers panel you set the blend mode of the layer. You want to change the blend mode of the brush!
Thank you this is very helpful.
You’re welcome! Glad it was helpful!
brilliant!
Thanks! Glad you found it useful!
I already knew most of this, but the last part with the brush in Overlay mode was new to me. Very clever!
I never use brush blend modes, except for this one case! Nice little trick to have up your sleeve 🪄
I learned from the end of the video regarding overlay to tackle the half transparent pixels on the inside. Is there a similar setting for sharpening the pixels on the outside ? I tried a few combinations and couldn't find one that worked .....
Happy to hear that! For the outside is the same technique, but you use black as foreground color! It isn’t really sharpening, but rather better defining the mask. Hope this helps 😊
Yes, of course black, but some blend mode didn't seem to work for me. Will try again. I thought different blend mode was needed. Very good tutorial.
What about mixing two tools, the pen tool and the refine tool. Let’s say you need to cutout a character with bushy hair. The body can be easily cut out with the pen tool, without having to deal with grey borders etc. But the hair needs to be dealt with the Smart Selection tool and the refine tool. I couldn’t figure out how to mix both tools. Is there a way to do it ?
very usefull !! thx
You're welcome!
🎉
useful!
Thanks! Glad you found it useful! 👊🏼
BIG WISH!!! Hello sir, I just found and subscribed to your page. I think your great videos would be even better if we could play along instead of just watching you. Any chance you can create a folder or link that you could load the images you are using in the video, maybe even the special brushes you use so that we can actually work WITH you while you teach us??? I guarantee you more people would watch and watch longer and probably even multiple times for practice.
Hey Aaron, welcome to the channel! Thanks for your suggestion. Will see what I can do for future tutorials! 🙌
Can you change the red overlay color to a different color?
Yes, black, white and transparent
@@PhiddyPford No, I mean other than red, like green, purple, etc.
As far as I know, you can’t. But I have to admit that I never really looked into it. So I might be wrong
@@IAMRENSI ok. Appreciate your time
Seems faster on photoshop 😢
Affinity needs to add a SMOOTH option when making selections.
Already has...
@@jeanrenaudviers How to smooth selection? Please advise. I tried finding it, but couldn't. I only saw the feather option and the contract and expand option.
You can smoothen selection by going the Menu bar > Select > Smooth. This should do the trick 👊🏼
@@IAMRENSI I already unistalled the software and got a refund. I wish Affinity had put the SMOOTH option in the Refine dialogue box, with the feathering and Contract/Expand slider.
@@Michael-fw5efor you could have used the help, looked at the options or such?
The most over-complicated way to remove a background in software I've ever tried.
Photoshop 6 could do it easier than this.
They really need to redo this because it's a pain.
This is good knowledge. Thank you. I enjoy ten minute videos that explain one topic. I wish i could explain how helpful that is.
You’re very welcome! I’m happy to hear that you enjoyed the tutorial. Will do more of these 😊
The overlay trick at the end is really useful! I've lost count of all the times I've had to manually try to carefully fill in those areas in the past without messing up the edges.
Same for me back in the days. This is a game changer! No more messing up edges ;)
I wish affinity photo just had the auto selection option like in photoshop
That would be a game changer indeed! Until then, we got to do it with what we have 😅
why they didnt add a plugin? this way its like going back in time to 2007 with photoshop
excellent tutorial
Thanks! Glad to hear you enjoyed the tutorial
Nice, but it appears that Photo 2 works differently
This was recorded in Affinity Photo 2
Great video I really like the overlay at the end to really refine the selection. I am going to do this in future. your videos are so clear to follow. Thanks !
Yea it's a very nifty trick to have up your sleeve indeed! Glad you find it easy to follow my tutorials! Will keep them coming, Elizabeth! :)
I couldn't get this do work. when I hit delete, nothing happens.
Hm, not sure what's going on there. Feel free to make a post about it inside of the Affinity Photo Creatives community. That could give you answers!
People, learn to use a pen. You'll make a path in 3 minutes and have a perfectly outlined object. And now, you're agonising over this mask drawing, with these artefacts.... It's pointless.
What about hair or fur
@@GarviHere Yes, hair and fur with a pen is difficult to separate, but with a brush it is equally difficult. You need completely different tools for that.
I made a tutorial on how to perfectly deal with fur. It’s indeed using brushes: th-cam.com/video/FncnakTjEik/w-d-xo.htmlsi=2SvoKmzKjs5jrzNs
Another example of a Clickbait header.
Nobody in their videos demonstrates an EASY way to remove the background in a low-detailed photo without difference in depth of field between the background and the main subject.
And all of demonstrated techniques are in the official Affinity tutorials.
Don't really see how this is clickbait. It doesn't get much easier than this ;) But if you prefer the official Affinity tutorials, have fun watching them!
