Pixies, Throwing Muses, Belly, The Modern Lovers, Drop Nineteens, The Breeders, The Cars, Galaxie 500, Dinosaur Jr. - The absolute best of New England bands ;)
I actually have it as my #1 song of all time, and it's up against intense competition: New Order, Pogues, Dinosaur Jr, Sonic Youth, Flaming Lips, Tom Waits, Wilco, Teenage Fanclub, Clinic, Squirrel Bait, SUNN O))), Joy Division, Compulsion, Four Tops, Dylan, Billy Bragg, Mark Lanegan, Eels, Primal Scream, blah-de-blah-de-blah..... But still, 'Winona' remains my favourite song ever written. I'm prolly the only person to claim that. I dunno...
i love this song!!! As a 90s indie music fan in Brazil I had to paint my own Drop Nineteens shirt cause I could not buy it anywhere, good times!!! C'mon guys get together and play some gigs!!!
This song forces you to feel nostalgic... I don't think I remember seeing this on TV because I was born in 1991 and too young, but boy does it make you teary-eyed over the 90s. I miss my SatAM Sonic The Hedgehog, PB&J sandwiches, wacky headphone radios, and walking to friends' homes in the neighborhood just to sleepover and play Genesis games! How often do people even interact with their neighbors anymore!? Ironically, it's like we're all disconnected.
I was born the same year and even tho I know I've never heard this song prior to 2013, IT FEELS SO FAMILIAR. I'm such a fan of the early to mid 90s culture. Part of me wishes I was a teen then but I am glad to live in this modern age as I do have easy access to all this great music
In the time since I last commented, this song has gone from a nice late night find to possibly my favorite song ever. I feel an indescribable rush of emotions when I hear that riff that opens and closes the song. It's like a longing for an idealized version of the past and a realization of an uncertain future. Nostalgia, joy, confusion, regret, bliss, a sense of wonder for how large the universe is and how everything we feel is such a small part of it. All within seconds. It's perfect.
@@Nayru3164 That was an old account I no longer use, but I posted this comment. I'm seeing Drop Nineteens in Philadelphia next month. Looking forward to it!
There's a gap in the 20th century And it fills the world with dreams I feel that these 2 lines capture so much about the nostalgically yearning, spun-out, postmodern world we live in
Very. So many great guitar bands at that time. Was a brilliant time to be a teenager. This is how all us "indie kids" actually dressed too. Not like the way modern kids think we dressed.
Anybody else have discovered this band at the age of 19? I have listened to them for the first time yesterday, now i'm in love SPECIALLY with this song. Such a lovely and pure melody.
well I could say that, im 18 about to be 19 in 2 months. just found this band and their discography; really good material they have, though a small discography (only 2 albums); its amazing. its sad that they were a short lived band, but their music is forever. Delaware is a phenomenal album, one of the best shoegaze records ive heard.
discovered at around 17 or 18? i'm unsure. winona is definitely one of the best songs i've heard since then. please check out their unreleased album, mayfield, if you haven't done so already! so good.
im 14 and i discovered this band from a random shoegaze playlist someone made on spotify a few months ago!! delaware is so good, i've listened to it so many times and its probably one of my fav albums ever
Such a great song. I remember reading somewhere that the lyrics are about the band foreseeing their own demise. Well, they certainly left a gem of a tune as their legacy.
oh man back in may my last year in highschool the last week, as we were preparing to leave for our senior trip i was walking in the hallways for the last time blasting this song on my ipod i saw this boy i had a thing for in the cafe' window i never got a chance to say goodbye so now when I hear this song the boy and the school hallways will forever be projected in my mind I could cry This song is the embodiment of youth beautiful
Bought "Deleware" via mail order after seeing this on 120 minutes. I was excited to find an American shoegaze band. Simple times that I will never see again. Looking back my life was much better than I thought at the time.
Now this reminds me of the early 90's as a kid. This song just has a haunting finger print of that time for me and just a badaas rocking song still today.
I've been listening to this song since a bought the cd in 1992.... I read it sometimes, when mood needs it, in loops.... The one I'd take on an island. BJK
First time I listened I hate it, then I listened this on my earphones and completely enjoy this masterpiece. Shoegaze songs have these ethereal sounds and details that make the song absolutely amazing
Actually discovering more 90’s music now then in the actual 90’s. Had to catch the songs on mtv or radio. Plus get the $10 CD’s. And a lot of alternative songs are an acquired taste or have to grow on you. but what a time, what a time. Went to college 93-98. Best time for alternative music. Miss it so much
just euphoric y'all. the guitars obvi. But some of the lyrics too - the first line always kills me and then also "another record shop story that was born to die."
I was a kid in the 90's. I obviously didn't know wtf was happening but to those who were teens or young adults what was so captivating about the 90's? Was everyone excited about the end of a millenia? Was everyone's lives so historically chill and engaging because of it? I heard that tech wasn't part of everyone's lives like todays iphones.
It was right before the cell phone, almost everything was blowing up and becoming bigger and better than ever. Seems like individuals don’t care about things as much as they used to.

I can't help but think the creators and music coordinators of Pete and Pete are at this forever unattainable level of cool and right now, they're sitting somewhere that's impossibly hip, reading obscure poetry from a gallow-doomed pirate in the Caribbean 1700's or something. #mountolympusofcool #wornoutstripedtshirts #bowlcuts It's not fair that I didn't know shit about coolness when this song came out and now I know some shit, but I'm past my prime.
