top banana Back in the 90s before I knew how old she was. I always assume she was younger because she she hung out with people half her age in their 20s and plus she didn’t dress her age and dress like one of the kids
It really bothered me when Kim and Thurston got divorced. When I was a teenager they were the coolest alt rock couple alive. It just seemed like they had the perfect marriage, money, music, art, cool, touring. I guess nothing is ever what it seems. I read Kim's book and you could feel the pain of her divorce and the betrayal she felt with Thurston's affair. Whatever his reasons it just felt she deserved more then that. I hope she has found some happiness all these years later, she certainly had a mark in my life.
Kim Gordon was so damn cool (still is). She was always the best part of Sonic Youth, and one of my personal idols. It pains me to realize that Thurston Moore, who I always thought was just a cool, chill, slacker guy would cheat on her, and because of his sorry ass, Sonic Youth will probably never get back together.

Gordon has done an amazing job of turning her weakness into a strength. She's one of the most consistently flat singers in music yet has leaned into in such a way that it totally works in context. With the raw vocal material she's working with there's a hundred ways she could have been bad and only one way she could have been good, and she found it. I guess it means if you don't have a traditionally "good" voice, don't despair, find a context it works in. Les Claypool is another perfect example. He's got good pitch but his timber is...unique. Try to imagine him fronting just about any other metal band to see what I mean. Yet in Primus it's the only thing that makes sense.
Still my favourite music video of all time. One of their most accessible songs and unbelievably catchy. The video was made 200% better by Kathleen Hanna's unselfconscious energy ♥
God this takes me back. So much quality music, was so lucky to live through that period. Sidenote-I heard this for the very first time on Beavis and Butthead of all shows lol

to be fair it's also many bands at the forefront of the scenes and genres that were underground in the 80s and exploded into the mainstream in the 91-92 Husker Du, The Replacements, Black Flag, Meat Puppets, Pixies, Throwing Muses, Megadeth, Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Faith No More...
They were an influence but so was all alternative and grunge, bands like the Pixies etc. They had direct influence on bands like Nirvana (Kurt wanted to write songs like them and Pixies) But they deserve more recognition? They’ve had a shit ton especially Thurston Moore. Only someone either super young or just discovering this music for the first time or just generally ignorant would say Sonic Youth hasn’t had enough recognition. There’s plenty of bands for whom they actually aren’t recognized enough - you should seek them out.

When I was a 14 year old highschool kid in 1992 I had to wear my sister's sonic youth shirt to school I thought I was super cool. It wasn't till I was a little older that I then appreciated how good they really were. I used to have a VHS tape of them and Dino Jr and nirvana it was mind blowing how ahead of there time those bands were
What's the vhs you're talkin about called 1991 the year punk broke? I used to watch that when I was 14 in 93!
@@kidkique 1 year off sorry don't have the vhs anymore lol
it'd be pretty awesome to live in a time where these bands were considered cool 😍
Yes it is
They weren't ahead of their time. They were absolutely of their time.
Why is this song so good? Every time I come across this video I'm mesmerized by Kim's voice, Kathleen being Kathleen, maracas on drums, and those beautifully put together distorted riffs that shouldn't work but do. 🙌
Fantastic video, Hanna is captivating throughout this magnificent tune.
@Rose Madder she gives me strong Bjork vibes from when she was in the Sugarcubes
@Rose Madder I forgot I even had that description lol.
Its song lyrics from Midlife Crisis by Faith no More.
@Rose Madder same... he's perfection.
@Rose Madder amazing album too. My two favorite artists (so I might be a little bias) lol
... wow, you really know your stuff huh
At first I was like: wtf is this, she's not even singing, now I'm fucking addicted.
Omg same
Same here 💯

Goo is such a great album.
According to the subtitles and lyric sites, the 3rd line actually ends "wanna whore me"
You forgot to jump a line in the end
I am actually having a strong memory of the aroma of Eucalyptus coming from outside my girlfriends apt. and the aroma of clove cigarettes we were smoking as we wore this LP out. Cool!
Wow i just can't believe that Kim Gordon was actually 41 years old when this video was released in 1994. i had always assumed she was in her late 20s or early 30s /
Oh nooooooo. 41!!!! Lol
She looks almost 50
I thought it was David Bowie
are you saying that before you looked at the vid, because in this vid she clearly looks 40 years old+
top banana Back in the 90s before I knew how old she was. I always assume she was younger because she she hung out with people half her age in their 20s and plus she didn’t dress her age and dress like one of the kids
Kathleen o m g... Just noticed they filmed this in my hood! Epic jamz.
Anna Sloan thurston is a piece of garbage. Kathleen Hanna and Adam Horovitz are the now the coolest alt couple
Turner Halsey definitely:)
....we're all let down by Thurston.
@@Mewted I expected more from Thurston, he always seemed different. Turns out he was just another asshole after all.
It was the first CD I've ever bought. And I still have it today
Awesome! The first CD I ever bought was Sonic Youth Goo.
don't know why but i am soooooooo hypnotized by Kathleen Hanna in this video
me too that crazy dancing dead eye look do for me too
Was too , back in 94 when 14 😘
I seem to return just for her 😹
I have to watch her dance and be goofy everyday, it improves my mood
I'm still stuck on that 90s grungie girl look...
One of the greatest videos ever made IMO... it captures a perfect aesthetic
I completely forgot about this song until fairly recently. Awesome song.
where the fuck have i been this IS fucking music
Cheers man
Beavis and Butthead.
best part is that at the time this was out there were already hipsters claiming SY "sold out" and EJSTNS was shit. When I cheered for this song at Lolla 95 some girl got all snarky with me. OK BITCH DAYDREAM NATION IS BETTER BUT SHUT UP
stuck in the 2000s? i dunno. if you want REAL music, the prime years range from 1955-1995.
shit man, I'm coming up on 50, and I just started listening to this band! to reiterate- where the fuck have I been too! LOL... kick ass!
Saw this line-up in Hartford: Social Distortion/Sonic Youth/Neil Young. Sonic Youth made full use of Neil's bigly amps! Every song ended in feedback...made me happy!
30 years later just looked up Kathleen Hanna.
I was 14 when this came out, loved her and this song.
MTV, 90s, Awesome.
Will always love this video cause of her energy in it.
Married to Ad- Rock, wow.
I miss the music of the 90's. So many amazing songs and bands.
Some trivia: Kathleen Hanna (the girl in pigtails) is married to Adam Horovitz of the Beastie Boys, and Tamra Davis (the video's director) has been married to Mike D of the Beastie Boys.
And Hanna was Kurt Cobain's girlfriend and wrote "Smells like teen spirit" on his apartment wall and thus the song title was born.
She was also the leader of her own seminal riot grrl band, Bikini Kill.
Loooove Hannah sooo much 🖤🤘😎
@Marc Bolger She wasn't a member of Sonic Youth, no. Just a friend and a peer.
Thank you! Just happened across this video and was wondering who was lip syncing next to Kim.
It never loses the eerie feel. So.good.
Agreed.
wow she was almost 40 in 1992 ,, shes doing very well now at 70 n still rockin
Seen these guys live so many times in Brisbane. Still one of my greatest memories from the first time I tried MDMA. 11/10 would try again.
Which? The drug or the band? Cuz nobody cares about your thoughts on XTC.
Director: "Kathleen, just be yourself."
Kathleen: "OK. 😜"
I think someone gave her too much sugar...

I’m boring. I love the Thurston songs and enjoy maybe two of the Kim songs.
This band makes every angst we had into a symphony of harsh reality and a groove that can't be fucking denied
I just found out that my crush listens to Sonic Youth and other cool 80's and 90's bands. The wedding is as soon as possible and of you see this comment you're invited

Hi Caroline,hope you’re okay ?
The critics still love ‘em in Neu Yerk.
This song simultaneously doesnt sound like anything and yet is still a banger
Doesn't get more 90s than this, kids...
I developed a life long crush for Kathleen Hanna because of this damn video.
Ad Rock is her husband. That's what's up.

You developed a crush on an annoying 24 year old acting like a 12 year old brat? Were you 12 at the time too?

Um caos harmônico de qualidade!!! HQ!!!
Great minimalist song. Does a great job of sounding out a mood.
Yet in Primus it's the only thing that makes sense.
she is a blond w/ a guitar...... :)
you're rationalizing a corporate decision. exactly how they like you to do.
Lydia Lunch does it as well
Billy Corgan comes to mind. Dang lots of salty replies. Sad much?
@@juliettyler7670 the entire Era was stained with angst. Corgan and company (zwan included) have a pen in thet ink.
Still my favourite music video of all time. One of their most accessible songs and unbelievably catchy. The video was made 200% better by Kathleen Hanna's unselfconscious energy ♥
I love at the end when she just starts attacking the other band members lol
Kathleen Hanna giving Kim Gordon a peck on the cheek at the beginning of the video is pretty hot!
Unselfconscious? That’s rich.
My feelings exactly 💯
It's the most 90's song/video ever
God this takes me back. So much quality music, was so lucky to live through that period. Sidenote-I heard this for the very first time on Beavis and Butthead of all shows lol
'Who's that five year old girl that keeps bouncing around '?

Idk man that video of Kurt Cobain, Kim Gordon, and Krist among other rockstars was pretty cool.
She tries too hard to be cool, so that makes her pretty uncool...
@@travisbrunner2922 lmao I don’t think she’s ever “tried to be cool” Sonic Youth would be mainstream l

Thanks so much for this, sonic youth have been a true favorite for me for almost 10 years and yr video did justice to their music and development. You rock!
This band was an influence for all the 90s rock music, they deserve more recognition
to be fair it's also many bands at the forefront of the scenes and genres that were underground in the 80s and exploded into the mainstream in the 91-92
Husker Du, The Replacements, Black Flag, Meat Puppets, Pixies, Throwing Muses, Megadeth, Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Faith No More...
Same with Faith No More.
I don't think either of those statements are true.
They were an influence but so was all alternative and grunge, bands like the Pixies etc. They had direct influence on bands like Nirvana (Kurt wanted to write songs like them and Pixies)
But they deserve more recognition? They’ve had a shit ton especially Thurston Moore. Only someone either super young or just discovering this music for the first time or just generally ignorant would say Sonic Youth hasn’t had enough recognition.
There’s plenty of bands for whom they actually aren’t recognized enough - you should seek them out.
2:10 RIOT GRLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
Kathleen Hanna is an American singer, musician, artist, feminist activist, pioneer of the feminist punk riot grrrl movement, and punk zine writer. In the early-to-mid-1990s she was the lead singer of feminist punk band Bikini Kill, before fronting Le Tigre in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Wikipedia
