Crazy we are nostalgic about a song from 20 years ago which talks about nostalgia from 20 years ago
25 years ago i guess😥
🎯🎯
Yeah, people have always been nostalgic. Its different now, though. People REALLY HATE THIS TIME!
Ha! Good point
yeahhh, its fuckin awesome that time
I'm 59. In 1979, I WAS these kids.
What a beautiful, haunting song.
..when we didnt need to think
I'm 42, I was 1 in 1979, still I totally relate to this song
Heard that brother
My dad was 9 in 1979, and I also resonate with the song as a younger person. Amazing to find so many similarities with other people :)
I'm 21 now, and have spent plenty of nights doing *most* of the things the video has. Especially the shitty driving 😂 Some of us still like to have fun without zombie walking into a hookah bar off 20 Xanax to talk about how loud the music is
Who is here in 2024 ?

I used to listen to this on repeat while walking 2 miles every day to school.
I met a girl one day on one of those walks. She went to a different school.
Sometimes we’d share an earpiece, walking shoulder to shoulder listening to this song together.
One day I stopped seeing her on my walk and 20 years later I’m still wondering but remembering her grace.
Much love Hannah ❤
this is so cool wtf
We need to get this comment to the top, she might see it one day if she still listens to this song.

I'm 42 years old, married, a beautiful wife who I will love till my last breath, 3 amazing children, a good career and relatively good health. Yet this song makes me want to go back and do it all over again, find my teenage self and let me know that all the pain you've experienced and still will in your 20's will be worth it in the end, that you'll be okay, you will.
Hey Justin can I use you for a quote for a film called "Replay" written by Ken Grimwood?

They never did ;)

You'll change your mind if you are still with us in 2040. Billy Corgan and the Smashing Pumpkins will see the benefits of their art!

That makes a lot of sense. It's like your friends and you are remembering what you all did together throughout the school year
you encapsulated the feeling perfectly!
The video was clearly inspired by "Dazed and Confused" which was released a couple years before.
🥺💔
wow i love this. gives me the feels. just thinking of school days.
Fun fact. Billy wrote the lyrics originally as a poem and then wrote the music without changing a single word to the original poem. What a musical genius. Edit: I'm sorry to the people in the comments that are definitely on the spectrum... You do you, I am sticking with he is a genius.
I'd be honored if some 90s fans would give a quick listen to my acoustic piano & vocal YT performances of "1979" by the SMASHING PUMPKINS and "Long December" by the COUNTING CROWS in tribute to 2 of the most iconic bands of the mid/late 90s. Live acoustic with no autotune. Peace out and stay safe in the '020s.

That's how Underneath the Bridge was written too! RHCP's producer read the poem in Kiedis' notebook and convinced him to make it into a song
Побольше Здоровье тебе бро Билли!Долгых лет жизни!
Genius ?? The lyrics suck !
My dad isn't here anymore, but he will forever be with me when I listen to the smashing pumpkins. Such a special sound that could never be recreated. I miss ya dad.

I don’t have to experience the 90s. I love this song because of gta 4.
We have an opposite opinion here, in Russia. 90s was the worst time for us, that was a decade of homicide, drugs and misery. Bless god it's all gone past.
Wasnt the 90s controlled by giant record companies?
We are currently in the golden age of music.
@@gachimuchenik7784 That’s a really cool perspective to hear. Everywhere I go everyone says that the 90s were a golden age which I guess they were in America, but not where you are from.
I was born in the 80's. The internet was deff a thing in the 90's... Especially the late 90's. AOL chat was the SHIT in 1998 lol. Really miss those times in my childhood. The 90's really was a lot better. Anything before 911. After 911 the country really changed. Everyone got angry and bitter and security was increased everywhere and then we also got these SJWs everywhere and stuff. 90's kids unite.
This video is so 90's it hurts
that's what makes it so great
Not really. The styles are not that different from today and everything in the video is exactly what kids do today -- even with the red cups. The video has a little bit of a retro feel, but it had that same feel when it was new because it was designed to evoke 1979 without all the very groovy clothing styles from the era (except for the cops and the corner store). The car is from 1972 or 73 -- no kid was lucky enough to have a car like this when the song came out. It was retro then.
Good times. Wish today's mainstream bands were half as socially aware. Videos and song writing have become so lazy now. Of course if that was a scary vision of youth, then just think what it might look like now?
+Astralis Lux The styles aren't at all like today
+emosh73 lmao sick story bro

@@anneg1979 I grew up around cell phones, only I never had one until I was 14. And when I did, it was just a stick phone which I used for emergency, I never depended on electronics growing up, because society was still fairly good when I grew up, after getting older and realizing what other adults told me when I was younger, no kid will ever realize shit an adult would tell them until they become one themselves.

I am sure the kids in the video was in the 90's and just the way I hear the song is when I just got out of high school trying to have fun before actually growing up. This song is the definition of nostalgia. I miss when I was younger, and I wish I could’ve cherished the time I had before I lost my chance. I’m pretty sure this is something we all deal with. As kids we wish we were older to be able to do what we want, but never realize that all we want is already there.

yeah honestly, I mean Im only 12 but I´m scared of growing up because I don´t wanna grow older and since I had a lot of trauma and I am mentally and physically older than most kids my age its hard to stay a kid and have fun. So now that I just realized this a few days ago I´ve been trying to cherish my childhood. But eventually I´ll have to. oh well. The song might be called 1979, but it captures the feeling of the mid 1990s so much.
Many of us really didnt understand the beauty of our youth. At the time we mostly dreamed of hurrying and finally growing the heck up so we could do what we wanted. Now as adults we at times yearn for some of the days of our past. The first girl that ever showed any interest in me ( an ugly duckling i considered myself to be) when i was 14 was the sweetest nicest girl. I came from a rougher home without much love and I considered myself quite unlikeable. She proved to me....that someone could actually like me. She ended up being the first love of my life. Unfortunately she died a few years after it all at only the age of 18. Now decades later i still think of her and her sweet spirit. How she had to have been an angel to like a misfit like me. Especially at such a crucial developmental moment of my adolescents where acceptance and love is exactly what i needed. I can still so clearly hear her soft voice from our childhood. Sad but i try to look back at the memory more with gratitude today. I'm just glad that it ever even happened. Sending strength and positive vibes to everyone who read.
6 months ago today my dads Toyota Landcruiser was in a car accident and the car was totaled. It was a perfectly preserved 2002 that was flawless. It could have gone another 100-200 thousand miles. Losing a car is nothing like losing a person, but It makes me sad that it was the car I grew up in and my family loved very much. My dad has always worked a lot and most of the times I spent with him were in that car. This was one of the songs he showed me while I was a lot younger. The road trips, memories, and surfing adventures can never be the same.
I have resonated with you friend. I have experienced something similar and you made me remember that part of a long forgotten life and feel the longing of something unreachable again. Thank you. I wish you the best.
Thank you. Sending positive vibes back from Buenos Aires, Argentina!!

I've seen pictures of my mom when she was a teen and things look a lot better and the style does too. Not only that but FOOD has gone down the drain, all the food we get now days is filled with chemicals and crap to make them look better and apparently taste better, especially McDonald's where their food in and out of their factory isn't even really food because they put so much crap in it. When we're actually experiencing them we don't understand how special they are, but looking back we realize how amazing and special they are. Remember and honor your husband by thinking back on all the great memories you had together. Hang in there ;)
Emma I'm very sorry for you're loss
I lost my
husband in 2016
and he loved this
song. I am sorry
you lost him.
god bless you emma
You must have been listening to Dishwalla Emma Peel. I am widowed also, but still hold out hope for another love. These songs bring back good memories and sorrow.
I was 19 in 1979. Having the time of our lives.
Yep! So was I. Grew up in San Diego, CA., which for teenagers was one of the best places to grow up. The weather was always on our side. Lived my life in the great outdoors......camping and riding our ATV's and Dune Buggies at Imperial Sand Dunes, or better known as Glamis. They have the largest mass of sand dunes in California. Loved that place. Went on Jeep Safari's riding over rocks, hangin' at the beach and going to every concert possible and of course my share of partying. Mom used to complain because I would only go home to eat, shower, change my clothes and sleep. She would always tell me, "This is NOT a hotel". I beg to differ. There was plenty of time to be indoors when I got older. When you're that age, home is not where you wanted to be. Too many people to see, too many places to go and too many things to do. And all the while we had our boombox and the music went everywhere with us. My God we had a blast. Now I'm a 63 year old lady, who doesn't do those things anymore. My spirit is that of 25 year old, but the body tends to slow you down. And while I miss those days, I'm even more grateful that I had the chance to live them!
@@dianerobinson5336 Yeah Diane, my Mom said the same thing. I raced dirt bikes and street bikes in those days. Lived and partied hard. Don’t forget the music, none of this synthesized or rap crap, real live stuff. Ahh, to go back. I don’t think the Ol’ body could take the abuse…lol. I still have a young mentality and travel a lot on a motorcycle. Retired a month ago after a 45year career. Time to have fun now. Stay well.
@@Glyder1959 I wanted to congratulate you on your recent retirement. Good for you! Hope life treats you well and you treat yourself to life.....on that motorcycle. Sounds like fun and a great way to spend all that free time you now have. Be safe and take the best of care!
One of the greatest albums of the 90s.. maybe ever. Takes me right back every time I hear it.
Let's all make a prayer for those who are still finding this song...
Its better to have a wasted youth than missed one.
Thanks lol
Why thank you.
I had searched bald singers from 1980 to 1990 cuz that was my only lead lol after awhile i found a modern pic of him and then found the song
Fellow Noel Miller fan
This band is highly under rated.
+Nicolle Haralson
Show me in this culture where Billy Corgan is celebrated to the extent of his achievements.
jk though. SP wasnt underrated in 1996. They were the biggest band in the world that year. But since BC has only put out shit since 2001, i think it's only fair they are not highly rated now. i don't think any of the 90's kids underrates his 90's early 00's output, though.
Im not even a 90s kid. Im 13 btw, Kids my age listen to ariana grande and rap, I wish more kids will listen to true music like this.
+Juguz Jota Pe Are not*
+Nicolle the Kawaii potato why do you act like you're so special hahaha it's not like you're the only kid our age who listens to this, plus your name is "Nicolle the Kawaii potato" so you know you're one of those ugly girls who hangs out with girls with tinted glasses and huge teeth that try to make fun of dumb kids to try to make people think you're funny. I'm your age btw, I hope you reconsider your life.
+Nicolle the Kawaii potato wow, nice comeback, the way you took my insult and did literally nothing but reverse it against me was really clever. By the way, I'm the captain of my football team, and took my baseball and basketball team to the league championships and won it in baseball. You look like a dumbass right now.
Love this song.
Born march 1979, my teenage song 🎉 Now 44 and still here!! ❤🎉
Born July 1979. Great song from a great band!
Born August 2nd, 1979 and still listening to this gorgeous master piece.
April 1979 😅🤘🏻
So many memories, good and bad, this song defines the mid 90s
sadly i was born in the 90s so my teen life was after 00's
There is some good music from the 00 s
Early 00s
hearing the smashing pumpkins on the radio relieves me
SeTLOc the do have that cooling efect
Really makes me think of highschool, where the Mondays sucked and the Fridays were the best..... sometimes you don't realize how much fun you're having until after it passes.
I agree 💯
mondays still suck, and fridays are still the best.
if i could go back, every day would be the best.
High school sucked. I'd never go back...
Nigredo Kukai Highschool would only suck if you had no friends and were dumb at the subjects.
if you went back you'd obviously champion at it all, it'd be nothing to you. unless like i say, you were dumb at all the subjects. :] toodle-oo...
The positivity for this melodic masterpiece is superbly poignant in how the music from this group, and the time of its conception when so much excellent music came out!!
Love SP
I was 14 going on 15 in 1979...for those of you who missed it, I am sorry for you. Wow what a great time it was to be that age at that time. I lost my virginity that year and that made it even more awesome. I wouldnt trade growing up in the 70s and 80s for any other time in history. It was just amazing people!
This is a perfect musical representation of the word “Youth”
Exactly!
I guess I never had one
Wonderfully said
Starting crying when I read this, but also listening to this song which makes me cry, have been drinking and just love this song so much
I'd be honored if some 90s fans would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of 1979 by the Smashing Pumpkins, LONG DECEMBER by the Counting Crows, and NAME by the GooGoo Dolls on my YT channel in tribute to 3 great standards of the mid/late 90s era. Live acoustic with no autotune or digital enhancements. Peace out and stay safe in the '020s.
"1979"
Shakedown 1979, cool kids never have the time
On a live wire right up off the street
You and I should meet
Junebug skipping like a stone
With the headlights pointed at the dawn
We were sure we'd never see an end to it all
And I don't even care to shake these zipper blues
And we don't know
Just where our bones will rest
To dust I guess
Forgotten and absorbed into the earth below
Double cross the vacant and the bored
They're not sure just what we have in store
Morphine city slipping dues down to see
That we don't even care as restless as we are
We feel the pull in the land of a thousand guilts
And poured cement, lamented and assured
To the lights and towns below
Faster than the speed of sound
Faster than we thought we'd go, beneath the sound of hope
Justine never knew the rules,
Hung down with the freaks and the ghouls
No apologies ever need be made, I know you better than you fake it
To see that we don't even care to shake these zipper blues
And we don't know just where our bones will rest
To dust I guess
Forgotten and absorbed into the earth below
The street heats the urgency of now
As you see there's no one around
bloody hell. thos are powerfl and beautiful words, huh? i never really worried to much about the words, it was always the heart wrenching sound that sucked me in to this song and that beautiful clicking on the drum rims at the beginning.
thanks, i never got the lyrics before, makes the song more meaningful n sadder
Where can I get the lyrics ?
try that Google thingy
Katherine Palmado pure poetry.. And so fitting for the memories they evoke now.
Nostalgia 😍😍
Im 13, my mom introduced me to this song... it changed my life.❤

i know the songs called 1979 but this is 90s as fuck
Kieran Maharaj Considering they (we) didn't have music videos in 1979
^what the FUCK are you talking about.
Kieran Maharaj The song is about growing up in 1979. Not intended to be a song from 1979.
Kieran Maharaj well, it did come out in 1996...
manlius What? How old are you? You are completely wrong, There were music videos in 1979.
I had the pleasure of meeting Billy at the Fairmont Hotel in Austin Texas. He was accompanied by his wife.
I had to take a double take lol. That dude is incredibly humble and modest. Very cool interaction.
I'm not being a buzzkill but the young people in this video are now in their late 40's at least . Crazy insane how time goes by so quick
Turning 44 yrs old but 100% grateful for growing up in the 80s and becoming a teenager in 90s. Greatest one-two combo in history.
I'm 44 in August..... We're did the time go ⏰
@@fields1336 in the past
@@fields1336 right on man! It's August 22nd for me, God willing.
I'm 43 now and I agree 1 million percent. No one truly got a better growing up experience then 80s kids and 90s Teens. I thank god for that daily...
I'm 41...
The kids of the social media generation don't know how bad they have it. Everything is a contest, everything is about who has the best photo, the best life, the best pair of shoes. The 90s and everything before 2010s really were THE days to cherish. Nobody was in a competition, we were all running our own races, living in the moment. Bliss.
+bigtux11 Amén to your words sir! And I ain't no christian xD
+bigtux11 oh yeah well said. Good times indeed, freedom as it best.
+bigtux11 Stop hating on todays generation. I remember people saying the same shit about us in the 90's.
+bigtux11 This is your point of view, actually, life is already a competition for itself, but nobody is forced to follow the trends,do what you want to do and do it for yourself!
Not all of us wanna have any competitions tho lol don't generalize an entire generation with ur weird superiority complex
Today is the first day I ever heard this song. It feels much better than what we have today. I’m only 20 and back then things just seemed simpler.
What a beautiful experience! I’ve heard this hundreds of times, and it never gets old. It never ceases to amaze me, to take over my soul. It’s a timeless masterpiece
Nah, people were a bit more social, less programmed by propaganda and media but probably just as selfish....maybe.
In many senses it was a simpler time...especially about how young people,s live was..no phones...no internet...no instagram and things like that...only a lot of people gathering in the streets having fun, enjoying their time...
Nothing like someone who didn't know one of the most obvious songs of the 90s to act like an expert on it lmao It seems simpler bc you're literally only seeing the simple fun parts. you arent seeing the heroin addiction behind the scenes lmao
I wish i knew how precious my life was Back then. Smashing Pumpkins forever!
This makes me miss something I'm not even missing in life
that was a perfect description of my feelings
yep. Weird emotions elicited, yet powerful
anemoia, your welcome :)
M. Nero that's angst, which is the entire movement of music this belongs to haha, I'm gonna use your comment to forever explain angst to someone
same lol
Hard to believe this song is 21 years old. I'm 62 and can't believe how time has flown.
"real" rock still exists man, it's just now, you've gotta look for it hahah
Yeah, i'm the same age, well, next july 63, but well, time flies, but not for realy good music, if it's Stones, Beatles, Jefferson Airplane, MC5, Rage Against etc..or Sjostacovisch or what the **** , excelent is excelent..and by the way, I don't wear black, sissies, give Ozzy or Sir McCartny a try, and be good, even without your throusers..black, white green, martian, rock it on,. And @ Mr. Kreulach, I lived that life, it was painfull in a way you will never know, bur, surprise..still alive ( forgive me, Sir..) and still kicking aroud, well, around real music.
Peace, and more Zappa, Tony from Holland
Juvenoia
KMK7355 I'm only 28
I'm 14 and my dad told me about this band around a year ago. From that day on, I am addicted to their music.
