There’s always gonna be a cultural bias which as a American I despise since I love studying people like Rommel and other foreign generals deemed as enemies by my country. @Soturian This is just a coping mechanism, making moral arguments is extremely low-IQ, and so is lying about Islamic jurisprudence. Yes their enemies were inept, thats why this was the end of their empire, they lost Syria, half their people were revolting, they lost because they were inferior and not as intelligent, and thought their ego and wealth would be enough to defeat people who they thought were beneath them because they were from desert tribes.

    • @mr.2083
      @mr.2083 5 ปีที่แล้ว +200

      @Soturian He didn't say non-muslims are stupid, just that the commanders on the field weren't as smart as the muslim commanders they were up against. The Byzantine/Roman commanders went into battle thinking the muslim army was inferior.
      He is just stating fact. btw. who are you to put words in his mouth like "the Mohammedans crimes are irrelevant"
      Also to concur your point "these guys made little distinction between arranged marriages and sexual slaves." a lot of western(Roman) people were also like that in the past. Heck, even in medieval europe arranged marriages between nobility(and also a lot of commoners) was the norm and often whores weren't treated much better than sexslaves(sometimes even much worse). People learned to love eachother during the marriage, not before. Get your history straight before you try to argue.

    Story of the battle of Yarmouk can't be called complete without including the story of the epic heroism of *Ikrima ibn Abī Jahl* whose rule in the center group of the Muslim army was one of the crucial events which turned the defeat into victory in the toughest hour of the battle when the odds was greatest and the night was darkest when he raised his sheath and broke it calling out to the Muslims: "O Muslims, who will pledge allegiance to death?" And around 200 Muslim guerrillas came to him (known in history as: the Islamic Death Brigade), when Khalid turned towards him and said: "Don't do that, cousin, for your killing will be severe for the Muslims." He replied, "O Khalid, I risked myself and fought against the Prophet in many places in the past, should I now save it in front of the Romans! No, it will never happen." And he went deep into the enemy ranks followed by a guerrilla after another fighting their way into the heart of the Roman army to weaken the pressure on the Muslim flanks. They managed to create confusion and chaos deep in the right center of the Romans which was the beginning of the end of their resistance and a factor in many that led to the Muslim triumph in Yarmouk.
    And Ikrima was one of the martyrs of that great battle.

      Aotorae “All is fair in love and war...” as the saying goes. Interestingly, until industrialization wars were skirmishes fought by warrior classes. Historical accounts of premodern battles usually exaggerated the tallies of dead and wounded. Peasants didn’t fight. It was only with the modern nation state could ‘total war’ be waged with civilians enlisted in combat or in support roles en masse. But even then soldiers didn’t like killing each other, the American Civil War and World War 1&2 all saw a lot of ammo intentionally wasted as it is speculated many avoided trying to kill. Only with the advent of modern training methods post WW2 have infantrymen become better conditioned to killing (human shaped targets, muscle memory drills, simulation of combat).
      Today killing is done at a distance and it makes it much easier as well. A study by Lt. Grossman found that the most traumatic experience in war is killing at close quarters, followed by snipers who see their victims faces and their suffering. But artillerymen and pilots can kill thousands and have little effect because it is so impersonal and far away. Drones are an interesting paradox because they are intensely impersonal (victims are just pixels on a screen and the killer has absolutely no risk to himself). But at the same time with the capabilities of cameras and surveillance, many drone pilots see the pattern of life of their victims, and it is harder for them to dehumanize them. A drone pilot may hover over a village for days before pulling the trigger and may watch “the enemy” shop, spend time with family, sleep, eat etc.

    Khalid Ibn Al-Waleed is for me one of the most underrated figures in history. He not only managed to repeatedly defeat two of the most solidly established empires in history, but his actions have had a lasting impact that very few others in history manage. Yet at the height of his achievement he was relieved of duty in the army by the Caliph and he agreed and quietly acknowledged the order and had a peaceful life in Homs without any fuss or fury. That is quite a character. Very positive very efficient maximum impact! Outstanding person. May you rest in peace.

      The problem with the Khalid saga is that Arab sources are extremely liar, historians do not trust them. It is said that he won 100 battles and that in the battle of yarmouk the Arabs defeated 400,000 thousand Roman professional soldiers. Arab scholars have lowered that number to 100,000. So despite Khalid's invincibility is accepted, she is viewed with suspicion and only 30% of battles are considered to be true.

      @Darth Shadow Armenians were not allied with Byzantines. They always wanted to absorb Armenia and would never accept any significant Christian State in the neighborhood except the Empire.Basically the fact they offered lands deep in Anatolia to many Armenian nobles in exchange with their lands in Armenian Highlands was the key factor for relatively easy Seljuk invasion. Before that Armenian kings and even local lords had rather easy times in repelling seljuk raiders. So basically although there were generals military units and even Imperial dynasties of Armenian origin, ERE was the first to be against establishment of a mighty Armenian kingdom.

    If you read Baha ad Din Ibn Shadad's Writings, Saladin was heavily motivated by Khalid Ibn Al Walid as he once mentioned that "I see Khalid RA everywhere, constantly making me realize why I could never even close to be someone like him". Noticing it, I think Saladin also used many of his strategies based off Hazrat Kahlid's war strategies. It is like he wanted a connection with him and hence conquered Jerusalem. What a brilliant history of generals, just makes me wanna visit them.

      Khalid was all manly brauns and determination backed by ego. Saladin had one great added tool to a bigger degree. Diplomacy and dialogue as needed at different stages + kindness (he picked up a cross fallen down in a church in Jerusalem and ancillary respect)

    • @ottomanverse
      @ottomanverse 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@nassermj7671 Exactly, even the Rashidun caliphs failed to keep the muslims united, while Saladin kept them united. Aside from his diplomatic skills and generosity, he had a deep respect for Christians. In simple Saladin embodied all the skills from the Rashiduns and especially from Khalid bin Walid to create his perfect war winning strategies. He had a deep for Khalid bin Walid and Saladin was the one who built his tome.
      But from a secular point of view, Saladin was better than Khalid and the Rashiduns when it came to battles and keeping a diplomatic union in Muslims. Saladin learned the mistakes from the Rashiduns and Khalid and formed ways to prevent those mistakes. He was respected by not only Muslims, but Christians, Jews, Hinuds etc. and gave them equal respect as well, something the Rashiduns didn't lacked but rarely showed.

At that time the Prophet's eyes were shedding tears. He added, "Then the flag was taken by a Sword amongst the Swords of Allah (i.e. Khalid) and Allah made them (i.e. the Muslims) victorious."

      if Khalid was even slightly power hungry aka. Ambitious,,
      he would've elevate his family into strategic/powerful position for future generations.

      The Byzantines were a professional army, nothing unusual there. However the zeal of the Arabs was something to behold- the man who declared himself "scourge of the pale faces" actually survived this battle with wounds that would kill other men.
      Ikrimah Abu Jahal, like Khalid al Walid was a former enemy of Islam who saw the banner fall at Ajnadyn (some say Yarmouk but that is impossible) and defended it with spear and sword, which both broke against Byzantine steel. He then defended it with his arms, which he also lost, keeping the banner up. He held on with the stubs until finally a Roman cut his head off. Khalid also nearly lost his head at Yarmouk, but lost his turban, helmet and 9 swords as well as 3 horses. That is zeal.
