He swam across the Euphrates, crossed Africa, took refugee with the Berbers, and escaped all the way to Spain to establish the Umayyad Emirate.

He instead let the infantry engage then exploited a gap that formed and charged with the cavalry. Better to hold them in reserve for the critical moment or use them to engage against opposing cavalry.

      @@dh3824 Yeah and he still had a contegent of calvarymen engaging the hoplites from the front which allowed him to exploit the gap. No one just yolo charges head on into enemy infantry with calvary without purpose, I don't know why you would imagine anyone being that simple to begin with. Calvary can have many roles, and harrasing the enemy lines before infantry engages is pretty standard practice. I am addressing a misconception that many people have, that calvary vs spears work in the same way irl as they do in total war games.

      No one escaped from the Umayyad house except one person, Abd al-Rahman bin Mu’awiyah, who was able to flee to Andalusia and defeated its ruler in his battle, so he was able to establish his emirate, so the Abbasid Caliph Abu Jaafar al-Mansur sent the leader Alaa to the city of Beja in Andalusia to fight Abd al-Rahman there, but Abd al-Rahman managed to defeat him, so he named Abdul Rahman " Falcon of Quriesh "

    The Umayyads charging their cavalry straight into spearmen from the front? Wasn't this strategy demonstrated to be a bad idea since the bronze age? I know it's easy to criticize people but people from the past but honestly, since when has that ever worked?

    • @MDP1702
      @MDP1702 3 ปีที่แล้ว +163

      It mostly worked during medieval time with charging heavy cavalry into the enermy breaking them. The shock value was most important. If the enemies didn't break and routed, the cavalry didn't really have an advantage, but if the line broke under the charge, as often happened with a heavy cavalry charge in (european) medieval times, you would limit your own casualties by a lot and have the chance to destroy your enemy nearly completely.
      Considering this and Marwan's trust in his great cavalry advantage, a frontal cavalry charge isn't that weird. What is weird is that it didn't immediately got supported by infantry following the charge and that no cavalry was kept back to protect the flanks or outflank the enemy.
      Honestly this actually should have been an "easy" battle to win if the accounts of numbers we have now are correct. The Umayyad infantry didn't even engage before fleeing.

    • @theblackswordsman9951
      @theblackswordsman9951 3 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      Depends on the spearmen. Effective long pikes and halberds weren't in wide use as anti-cavalry yet especially not in the Islamic world at this point. Phalanx units had been replaced by mass cavalry and mixed infantry for a long time. A cavalry charge of that size could ruin an army from the fear alone. He said they had to train to counter this effectively. Without that training i doubt they would have lasted the initial charge.

      Those ain't your lightly armored cavalrymen whose job is to harass skirmishers. Those are heavily armored cataphracts, the tanks of the antiquity/medieval period, with the horses armored so heavily that most spears cannot easily pierce their shell. The sheer weight hitting the receiving troops is usually more than enough to completely break unit cohesion and force a rout as everyone panics from the horses in their midst.
