From what I have read Frederick and his mounted knights captured a group of Tatars that was raiding in the area of Gyor zupa (county) I would have to double check the exact place, these captured raiders turned up to be Cumans because Mongols (Tatars) employed all sorts of ethnicities from their conquered territories and sent them to the forefront to cause havoc before the main army swooped down. Frederick kept a few alive and brought them to Pest to show people "the enemy" Hungarians were already averse to Cumans because they continued to live their nomadic livestyle, pillaging, trampling orchards, fields, raping women, stealing cattle...Czecho-slovak historian Dvorak wrote in his Book (Stopy Davnej minulosti) that after the complains became too numerous, Bela tried to break up Cumans and spread them out across Hungary. (Initially he settled them between the river Moros and Koros - tributaries of river Tisa, because this marshy area wasn't populated.). Sadly it was too late. People were frightened and believed that Cumans living among them were on the side of Tatars and were turning against them so they killed Kotten. Of course this is just what Frederick and Bela's HUngarian enemies (whose lands were returned back to the crown) wanted. Frederick held grudge against Bela for the money he had to pay him over territorial squabble. At this point Frederick also understood that he was incapable to produce an heir, I imagine that was a huge thorn in his side, making him Frederick the Quarrelsome.

Very well done! A high quality video visually, and I was impressed with your research here. While I think your coverage of the reasons for the Mongol westward expansion could have been given more detail, as with the period after the defeat at Mohi (you do cover it in the cards at the end, and understandably there is a limit to have much information you can put in one video) the campaign itself was well covered. The context of the battle is very important to have clear to understand why it is important, and I think it is worth the effort to spend more time on that and shave a little bit off the battle itself (but that's just me, as someone who is more interested in the historical period rather than the actual battle) Perhaps a bit more on the army composition and fighting styles would be a good addition, and who is on each side and their significance, which makes it easier to relate to the impact of political factors on the campaigns. Not to mention showing which generals are on which side in a card perhaps of sorts? You mention Shiban at one point, one of Jochi's sons and Batu's brother, but I don't think had mentioned him prior to then, making him come out of nowhere somewhat. The pronunciation of the Mongolian names was perhaps a bit weak (Chinggis Khan, not Genghis!) but I did like that you said Pest properly! Overall nicely done, very impressive and I definitely look forward to more!

What I found especially interesting, the use of artillery. The ballistrads were mostly used against fortresses and cities. In very few occasions were mentioned in plain battles. These were not effective due to their short range, extremly heavyness and cumbersome transportability. I witnessed one during work, even helped to prepare the shot. It shoot a human head sized stone to one hundred and fifty meters. Then it took almost ten minutes to shoot again. So this machine could kill one or two man in every ten minutes.
Historian 1: How should we call this battle? It was between two villages. One is Muhi but that sounds lame Historian 2: And the other? Historian 1: Nagycsécs (literally means Big Tit, or Great Teat, archaically) Historian 2: Uhh.. Let's just stick to Battle of Muhi...
Just a small information: IV. Bela lost all battles where he personally attended. And his lack of military powress was well known even when he became the king, and more of that, he alianated all his faters supporters. So that is the main reasons of the loss of battle of Muhi (not Mohi!). However the mongol army could only to cross the Danube on winter: the nobility (who werent at Muhi) has the power to controll the potential crossings. But thw winter of 1241/1242 was cold, and the Danube froze...

Well done for not simply repeating the myth that the Mongols withdrew because their Khan died. The general consensus seems to be that it was a combination of poor weather (leading to starvation amongst the horses), heavy casualties, stalemated sieges and lack of plunder.
Bela had a tough job and had a pretty good crack at it! The Hungarian nobility was notoriously difficult to control, it's a wonder he even had an army at all. It's nice to know he went on to revive the kingdom after the invasion was called off. It's a shame Hungary was right in the crossroads of so many invading hordes... The Ottomans did a much more permanent job of wrecking the country three centuries later.

@@chriswanger284 But we already know about victorious Hungarian military battles, lets look you win in battle of Lech 955, then you won the battle of Muhi 1421, the Mohacs 1526, in battle of Vilagos 1848 and you almost win in Stalingrad in 1942. so you are great military wariors... :-)
Sun Tzu said that you should always leave the enemy and escape route and this battle perfectly shows why. The Hungarians tapped the Mongols against the river, where they fought hard knowing that they would probably die if they tried to flee. The Mongols, on the other hand, left an escape for the Hungarians so they would be tempted to take it. Enemies with no escape will hold their ground ferociously because it’s their only chance of survival while enemies with a possible escape will be tempted to break and run.

Thank you for the kind words. Guess it's a matter of preference. I prefer the gradual cracking of units. It coveys better the gradual loses a unit takes during combat as opposed to a sudden burst like a light bulb. To each his own I guess.
Some of the Cumans where allowed to settle in Serbia under the Emperor Dusan, where the served as a light cavalry. The were given lands near the Serbian capitol of Skoplje in today Northern Macedonia.Later the city where they lived was named Kumanovo (translation from Serbian - of Cumans or town of Cumans).
Well done! I'm Hungarian and the film was well made, historically accurate! Subscribed. (Little side note: Mongols left Europe after they destroyed the rest of the Hungarian Kingdom. And after a few months they returned, but this time they defeated by Hungarian army at the Karpathian Mountains and never returned to Hungary)
Bela fled, and the Mongols followed him, until he took refuge on the Adriatic islands, where they could not follow him. He later distributed the privileges to all who helped him escape.

To his credit, despite all of his disadvantages and the huge oversight of the first bridge battle, that was a pretty long time Bela and his Hungarians had the Mongols on their back foot.
Richardsen They barely made through the Carpathians. Despite the first hit from the mongol horde, and later on the 150 years Turkish occupation after a good 3-4 generation worth of getting pounded and knocking them back, Hungary for 1000 years was a standing eastern bastion of Europe.
You call it invasion, we call it Tuesday. :D Maybe im a bit overly nihilist, but if some foreign invading troop would march on my towns streets I would look at the calendar, and think: "Yep, its that time of the century again."
The Mongolian Empire was like playing the conquest game but on ultra easy mode! That, and Mongol policy was: I want that Rest of the world: No! You can't have it. Mongol's: I just took it. What are you going to do about it? Rest of the world: Ok. You can have that, but nothing else! Mongol's: I want that... Annnd repeat.
I don't know if I would call the flanking attack "genius", but it was a good move that secured them the victory. If the entire Mongol force had crossed at the bridge then they probably would have been smashed against the river by the heavier Hungarian army. The real genius tactic of the battle though was to leave a portion of the encircling Mongol army open around the Hungarian camp to bait the Hungarian troops into retreating. Its interesting to think though that if Subutai's flanking forces had been later to arrive at the battle then it could have ended in a crushing Hungarian victory.
that flanking move was mediocre at best he got lucky that the Hungarians panicked upon seeing them. if they held a reserve force or had better discipline they'd have won
@@ElBandito this is why you always have a reserve force who's only used when absolutely necessary. Even though it'd weaken the front lines it's always more preferable to keep your formation flexible to handle new challenges as they pop up.
Good video, as a hungarian history teacher, im impressed :) I think you should change the hungarian capital to Buda. Pest was insignificant in the medieval Hungarian Kingdom. There was an enligsh priest names Robert in the mongolain army, who helped the mongolians to write letters to Bela IV, it is a very good letter, i can suggest to read it to everyone, who knows hungarian language and loves history :) Esztergom was a very importtant medieval town in Hungary (seat of the main Archbishop of Hungary) was never taken, because of its walls and italian mercenary crossbowmen defending it. That can be the main factor, that encouraged Bela to negotiate the nobles to build fortresses everywhere, and gave them land again (his fater gave a lot of land to the nobles, and Bela stopped it, that was the main reason of the coflict between the king and his highlords), Also, most of the videos what i saw forgets about Mongolian invasion in Hungary (what we call "Tatárjárás") forgets to mention the fact that Ögödei dies in 1241, and Batu Khan wants to be the Great Khan. That is certanly one of the main reasons of the mongolian retreat.
Well, as far as i'm aware, or atleast was taught in school (also Hungarian). Hungary did have fortresses, but made out of wood, which ofcourse was not capable of fending off a real army, because they could just set it on fire. And surely the Mongolian army was more than capable of developing good tactics, given they crossed a whole continent to get here. Also would like to point out that in the game that i'm sure many are familiar with, well Age of Empires 2. The invasion is included too and also explained why the Mongolias retreated, just as you've mentioned above. :)
Good points about Esztergom, Buda, however, became important only after the Tatar invasion when Bela had a stone palace built there on the hills, so you have it reversed. Up until 1240 Pest was more important than Buda. And yes Esztergom had a stone castle and was able to fend of the Tatars but the town itself under the royal palace was destroyed. As the video mentions there were several reasons why Tatars left, the main one was logistics, the Tatar idiots killed the peasants, destroyed everything and had nothing to feed their horses. The Chinese had to teach them that killing everyone wasn't actually in their best interest. The rains feeding the marshlands and the mountains made it also difficult for them to maintain a strong foothold.Their second attempt at the end of 13th century ended in utter failure.
Keep up the good work, i really liked some details about the major personas that are not mentioned in other channels' videos. The channel is going to grow fast if you keep it that way
...To this day whenever I run into videos like this, I remember this one comment saying that Europe was never invaded. He kept trying to prove himself wrong each time.
The battle was lost, but not the country. Batu was not able to exploit the victory. The Mongols could not capture the castles built of stone. Ögedei Khan died in december 1241 and Batu Khan returned to Mongolia in Spring 1242 for domestic reasons.
I stumbled upon your channel from BazBattles. Your channel is interesting and I believe it's new. Anyway it's really fun to watch your content. Keep up the awesome work! Will check out your other videos as well. I'm a big fan of European history.
@@lkhagwadorj No, the Hungarians had more heavy cavalry, even in the first invasion the few European heavy cavalry that fought did a lot of damage to the Mongols, why do you think that after the first invasion the Hungarians and rest of European powers dramatically increased their numbers of heavy cavalry? Because the worked great. Mongols were good vs unprepared armies but were nothing against a prepared European army with decent numbers of heavy cavalry.
The second Mongol invasion of Hungary probably wouldn't make as compelling of a video because the bulk of the fighting was done through skirmishes and sieges.
@@Wen6543 A big mistake in fighting a Mongol army is to try to fight them with light cavalry, because they're always going to be better at it than you. The best way to fight a Mongol army is with a combination of heavy cavalry with crossbowman or foot archers. Heavy cavalry has a hard time of catching more mobile mounted archers, but if they can succeed in pinning them down (against some geographic feature) or otherwise forcing them into direct combat, they will usually crush the mounted archers even when largely outnumbered. Foot archers and crossbowman are the little known weakness of mounted archers; a well trained archer on foot will almost always be more accurate than one mounted on a horse, and will also present a much smaller target to hit. As long as you don't fall for a feigned retreat, the Mongols will have a difficult time fighting an army of this composition. Its essentially the way Richard the Lionheart defeated Saladin's light cavalry army at the Battle of Jaffa.

The context of the battle is very important to have clear to understand why it is important, and I think it is worth the effort to spend more time on that and shave a little bit off the battle itself (but that's just me, as someone who is more interested in the historical period rather than the actual battle)
Perhaps a bit more on the army composition and fighting styles would be a good addition, and who is on each side and their significance, which makes it easier to relate to the impact of political factors on the campaigns.
Came from Bazbattles. Nice videos. Just remove the bong sound effects with maybe the sound of a flag flapping. Loved the detail. Keep it up. You are very enthusiastic !
Thank you very much! Welcome to the channel. And thanks a lot for the suggestion! I've had people suggesting to change the boing sound, your suggestion for the 'flag flapping' is an awesome idea!
HistoryMarche thanks. Appreciate the reply!!!!
Yeah, the bong sound is the only nitpick I have about these videos. Especially when they pop up one after the other, it just sounds too cartoony when set against the rest of the video style.
Just don't make the sound effects to loud, its more about you and the storytelling ;P
The sounds are for extra immersion, but it gets annoying if it's to loud.
Good luck :D
Yep, the videos are great. I've watched all of the similar channels videos, and surely the boing needs to be removed :P Keep it up!
Correct video. I'm Hungarian, and the story is quite correct.

3:16 bet the Hungarian king started regretting putting his Kingdom on the line to protect the Cumens just about now.
Mongols would have found another reason to invade anyway. At least with Cuman Auxiliary troops he had a better chance of repelling the Mongols.
Mongols were bunch of liars. Their agreements were abosulety worthless.
@@laszu7137 nash they weren't, unless you disrespected them.
by all means he ended up regretting taking them in since their participation was very harmful in the end
@@DKNkmFrvr What i heard that the Hungarians treated them extremely bad that could be the reasons why they didnt wanted too die for them.
Mongols is the only faction that whenever I watch a battle analysis video, their moves actually make sense...
Historian 1: How should we call this battle? It was between two villages. One is Muhi but that sounds lame
Historian 2: And the other?
Historian 1: Nagycsécs (literally means Big Tit, or Great Teat, archaically)
Historian 2: Uhh.. Let's just stick to Battle of Muhi...
ahhh how much i'd love that to be "Nagycsécs" aka big tits.
anything but tits.
they're holy, you know
It is Mohi not Muhi, Muhi is the battle in 1848 i believe 🙂
@@Sudungarn It is Muhi, not Mohi. There was a battle of Mohács, but that was in 1526.

@OrmanyJozsa indeed,he is an exceptional bureaucrat but not a good general,he should've make Coloman his brother as the supreme commander of the army

Indeed. In my opinion Bela IV deservedly has the nickname "Second founder of the state"
the Hungarians are part of these hordes of invaders

Sun Tzu said that you should always leave the enemy and escape route and this battle perfectly shows why.
The Hungarians tapped the Mongols against the river, where they fought hard knowing that they would probably die if they tried to flee.
The Mongols, on the other hand, left an escape for the Hungarians so they would be tempted to take it.
Enemies with no escape will hold their ground ferociously because it’s their only chance of survival while enemies with a possible escape will be tempted to break and run.
Excellent comment.

To his credit, despite all of his disadvantages and the huge oversight of the first bridge battle, that was a pretty long time Bela and his Hungarians had the Mongols on their back foot.
Exactly. And Bela's reforms were hugely successful. The Second Mongol Invasion of Hungary ended in total disaster for the Mongols.
Richardsen They barely made through the Carpathians.
Despite the first hit from the mongol horde, and later on the 150 years Turkish occupation after a good 3-4 generation worth of getting pounded and knocking them back, Hungary for 1000 years was a standing eastern bastion of Europe.
Yeah, life must have been tough in Hungary.

Can't believe how close the Hungarians were to victory. That tactical genius of Subotei with the pontoon bridge and flanking really paid off
I don't know if I would call the flanking attack "genius", but it was a good move that secured them the victory.
@@kakerake6018 But the Hungarians couldn't get reserves. All soldiers were needed to press against the Mongols, who were fighting just as ferociously.
@@ElBandito this is why you always have a reserve force who's only used when absolutely necessary. Even though it'd weaken the front lines it's always more preferable to keep your formation flexible to handle new challenges as they pop up.
Best animated battles video ive ever seen! Amazing! keep it up
Thank you very much for your kind words.
The initial conversation was very funny between the fight 😂😂😂😂. Great job
Good video, as a hungarian history teacher, im impressed :)
I think you should change the hungarian capital to Buda. Pest was insignificant in the medieval Hungarian Kingdom.
There was an enligsh priest names Robert in the mongolain army, who helped the mongolians to write letters to Bela IV, it is a very good letter, i can suggest to read it to everyone, who knows hungarian language and loves history :)
Esztergom was a very importtant medieval town in Hungary (seat of the main Archbishop of Hungary) was never taken, because of its walls and italian mercenary crossbowmen defending it. That can be the main factor, that encouraged Bela to negotiate the nobles to build fortresses everywhere, and gave them land again (his fater gave a lot of land to the nobles, and Bela stopped it, that was the main reason of the coflict between the king and his highlords),
Also, most of the videos what i saw forgets about Mongolian invasion in Hungary (what we call "Tatárjárás") forgets to mention the fact that Ögödei dies in 1241, and Batu Khan wants to be the Great Khan.
As a history teacher, why do hungarians think they have a right ofver Transylvania?

Khaled: that's cute.
The battle was lost, but not the country. Batu was not able to exploit the victory. The Mongols could not capture the castles built of stone. Ögedei Khan died in december 1241 and Batu Khan returned to Mongolia in Spring 1242 for domestic reasons.

Azz Laird because Subutai was dead by then.
cuz battle-hardened khan's army didn't show up
@@lkhagwadorj No, the Hungarians had more heavy cavalry, even in the first invasion the few European heavy cavalry that fought did a lot of damage to the Mongols, why do you think that after the first invasion the Hungarians and rest of European powers dramatically increased their numbers of heavy cavalry?
