I’ve owned my 2021 e-tron for a couple of months now and even though I admit the mileage range is lower than most other ev cars on the market, I wouldn’t change it for another. I absolutely love my car! I previously owned a q5 and q7 and BOTH models had tugging seatbelts (so I’m assuming it’s something related to safety or even a glitch they haven’t gotten around to fixing) as for the trunk opening height you can actually set it to you liking ( once it reaches your preferred height hold the lock button on the truck for at least 3 seconds, the car lights will blink and the new height will be set, so every time you open it won’t go above). My model doesn’t have the interior rearview mirrors, it seemed something that would take TOO much effort to get used to. As for everything else most are minor issues, in my opinion and I am as happy with my car as a child with a new toy! Great video, going to watch the best things of the e-tron next!

Have had our 2019 E-Tron U.S. Prestige version for 3 months now. We contemplated a Model-X for years but finally decided on the E-Tron. Both are fantastic cars but with different positives/negatives. Our conclusion was/is if you're looking for a high-tech experience and long range, then the Model-X is the way to go. If you're looking for luxury and comfort, and long road trips are not a priority, then the E-Tron is the better option. My two cents on the 10 things presented in the video: 1. Our air conditioning has been more than satisfactory. We've actually been impressed with how quickly it cools the car. My experience has been the opposite of yours. My wife cranks the AC up, and I am freezing most of the time. 2. Rear windows not going all the way down... agree... very annoying. It's the same with the VW Passat my brother owns, and while touted as a 'safety' measure, it is also a design issue. There is not enough room in between the glass and the wheel wells for the window to fully retract. 3. Virtual mirrors. Not allowed in the U.S. and I have not heard good things. 4. Suspension/Handling - As you point out, there are several driving modes to choose from and each is going to have its pros and cons. Driving in Comfort mode differs vastly from Dynamic mode. For a 6,000 lbs car, it actually performs and corners relatively well in the proper mode. The low center of gravity in most EVs is a significant advantage and the E-Tron has some of the largest front brakes I have seen. 5. Seat belt 'tug'. This is a safety feature typical in many high-end cars. The tug is to take away any slack between you and the seat belt in order to avoid additional injury in the event of a collision. 6. Steering wheel shape. I hadn't noticed this in our car until you mentioned it, but I just checked and ours appears to be a perfect circle... so not sure if earlier or later models have different steering wheels. 7. Disappearing parking tickets - haven't had any (or maybe they've been swallowed and we'll be getting a reminder in the mail). 8. Scratchy/cheap paneling. The area you pointed out in the video is a nice leather panel in ours. Must be a different trim level. 9. Efficiency/range - Agreed. Audi is definitely behind in that area. Range was not one of our priorities. Interestingly enough, while Audi claims a 204 mile range (for the 2019 model), we have consistently gotten around 240 miles out of ours. 10. The boot/rear hatch - the rear hatch opening height of most modern cars is easily adjustable to the height of your choosing as is the case with the E-Tron... not only to accommodate your height, but also the height of your garage. Overall, we have been very happy with this car. It is very comfortable, very quiet, and came loaded with all the options (but I do agree with one of the comments... some of these options should be included with the lower trim level given that my brother's Passat has most of them as well.. Porsche is even worse). So far no issues aside from having to replace the rear light assembly which is a know problem with the 2019's. We'll see how it does in the months to come. I hope these details help some undecided buyers to at least test drive as many EV models as they can. There are many positive and negative posts about all EVs, Tesla included... and they will take you on an emotional roller coaster ride as they did with us for the past few years. There is no perfect EV, but there are several great options depending on your personal priorities.

Well said! Everybody I see that complains about their EV range and the infrastructure obviously didn't do their research.

My wife and I are thinking about trading our Q8 for a Etron S.

@@WhatTheFork Thank You. It's been exactly 2 years with the car now. No issues to report and I still look forward to driving it every day... although we only have 7,500 miles logged so far. It's such a comfortable car. One thing to note is that the E Tron's computer tries to learn your driving habits so it can calculate estimated range. My wife has been driving it a total of 3 miles each morning to meet her friends for their morning walk. This has proven to be terrible for the estimated range algorithm since the battery has to prep itself each time for only a 3 mile drive. The range now shows around 100 miles at 80% charge. Longer drives have confirmed this to be a 'false' reading and the true range is still the expected 214 - 240. The dealer said some of this inaccuracy can be avoided by setting the charging timer to finish charging around the time she expects to leave the house, but you have to remember to turn the timer on every night. The inability to automatically set the timer on a 5-7 day schedule (instead of having to manually tell the car to use the timer each night) is the only annoying thing worth mentioning. I hope Audi provides the option in future software updates. Other than that, still very happy with the purchase.

@@jadakjada Wow thanks for the info! I would have definitely wondered why the range was so low. My wife and work from home 100% and most of our trips are short drives because our home is close to a lot of things.
I've been doing slot of research on the Etron and everyone says it super comfortable. We love our Q8 but want to go electric and we were worried we would lose space.
After doing side by side comparison they both have very similar interior space far as leg room goes. We put a deposit on a etron s it will be here next month I'm excited.

You can lower the rear boot
Pull down on the boot against the
Motors so Will feel resistance then
Hold the button on boot for 5 sec or until hazards flash. It will then set to that hight. Hope this helps

  • @TonyNeat

Steve, I imagine you can set the opening height of the tailgate. On the ŠKODA Superb you literally pull the tailgate down by hand to where you’d like it to be then press and hold the button you used to close it. After a few seconds it makes a confirmation beep and it’s all set. Only ever opens to that height. If you want to adjust it just repeat the process.

You can also stop the trunk on the way up and hold the close button a little while and from then on the trunk will always stop at that hight. The last thing you can do is to take your foot under the car and it will automatically close it self.

I agree with most of the points on the etron. I had one of the earliest cars launched in the UK and eventually got rid of it and got a Model X. On the plus side, the fit, finish and comfort is very high. It shows that 100+ years experience that Audi has in car making. My car had wing mirrors and the one on the left would keep turning off every now and the, the car spent 4 months out of the 7 I had it for in the Garage and they could not sort it out- different story every time- software upgrade/control unit malfunction/ new camera needed etc etc. The car is not road legal if these cameras don’t work properly so I was doing a sweet diesel Q5 loaned by Audi during the period (so much for protecting the environment). Also when driving through heavy rain, the sensors would start malfunctioning so auto control or steering assist would shut down. During winter in London, the car would do 1.7-1.8m per kW which means an effective range of 150m or less. The Tesla doesn’t have the same fit and finish but the tech works perfectly. During summer and early autumn I was still getting 3-3.5 m per kW. Still to go through winter. In a nutshell, Audi haven’t got their tech sorted and the motors are extremely inefficient. Tesla tech+ supercharger network is unbeatable.

    Key fob boot close update!!
So a few comments have suggested you 100% CAN close the boot with the key fob by holding the boot button for a couple of seconds.
I did try this (as it’s the same as the Tesla) however I was either doing something (repeatedly) wrong, there was a problem with this particular car, or as it was a loaner, it had comfort access turned off for security reasons so maybe that stopped it working as well.
    Who knows?
Anyway, for fairness, you should be able to close the boot with the key. (But double check)
    Cheers!

    • @mxrz

I can open and close the tail gate on my E-Tron with my foot, under the bumper... no need to get the key out at all. I don't have that cheap plastic panel in my car, it's leather. A/C works as well as any previous Audi I owned, even in ECO mode... mine also comes with air ionizer and fragrance dispenser. Heads up display, night vision, massage seats, blind spot indicators in the mirrors where they should be, double glazed sound insulated glass, heat pump, etc, etc... all kinds of features not found in a more expensive Tesla X. Thicker, softer Valcona leather, even on the dash, Apple car play, wireless phone charger, voice reminder if I'm getting out of the car and the phone is still inside... and a much quieter interior... basically, this EV is for Audi owners or other luxury vehicle owners that want to try an EV... not everyone is willing to downgrade in luxury, comfort and features, to a Tesla, just to gain a more efficient, more mature (10 year advantage) EV drive train with an available performance option (Audi hasn't released a RS level EV yet).
Btw, you want to know why the rear windows don't go down lower? Walk away from the car a bit, turn around, look at it from the side, notice where the rear wheel arch is located, and imagine the size of the window glass panel moving down, where does it have to stop before it would hit the wheel arch? Yeah... basic logic. SUVs with windows that go down all the way are either much longer or the window is cut into a smaller, more rectangular shape. This is also not an E-Tron issue, it's a very general design issue affecting many cars and SUVs.

After test driving the etron and model Y back to back I was disappointed in the etron. It felt like the EV part was an afterthought, performance was weak. I felt like the seats weren’t as comfortable as the Tesla yes I know Audi materials Italian leather etc but overall seat comfort was a win for Tesla. The minimalist interior isn’t for everyone but it’s grown on me as someone who’s owned Audi’s and Porsche previously I’m not looking back.
Audi’s tech feels like the same old but just with some different twists but nothing very innovative.

I agree with some of your dislikes. I own the 2021 Etron sport back. I love the double side charging ports. I agree the back windows need to go down all the way. The miles per kw is really low. I just got my car back from the shop for the front motor going out at 20k miles. The car was in the shop for 90 days for the repair. Found out this is not common repair but Audi has kept it quite to avoid a recall on the motor seal going out. I just purchased the Hyundai IONIQ 5 as my car was in the shop so long. That car has a 330miles per charge with only a 77.4kv battery. So hopefully others will get more miles from the larger batteries.

I own an BMW (2018) i3 for a year now. It is the perfect car. It has lots of power, good range, 180km on a full charge, 16-18KWh/100km, it can take less if you go with 100km/h. Perfect for city and for commute on short distances (100km round trip). In the winter the range drops by 20-25%; of course it depends on your driving. I am not passing,I dont drive it in Eco or Eco Pro. I cannot compare it with the Etron, i3 being a smaller car, it was not intended for long journeys like the E-tron, but in my opinion BMW i3 is a perfect choice for a city and short commute. I like it so much that I even buy an 2020 i3s.

Hi Steve, Love your video. I agree with all your 10 points and happy that you have done a great explanation why, especially with the adaptive cruise control, which I also absolutely love! You might have added then when driving on a straightaway and then coming to a tight corner the car sees the tighter corner and slows down to a bit slower speed and then accelerates through the corner at the right timing to your previously selected speed. One comment though, when using it on a twisting tight corner road I never use it as I prefer to do the slowing down and speeding up on my own and to enjoy the dynamic handling that you would want to enjoy with such a great handling car! Even though I have owned my car for almost 17 months I did learn some new tricks I didn't even know about and I thought I knew everything! Specifically the customization of the rear hatch height! Way to go on mentioning this feature. By the way I have driven it across North America from coast to coast to coast with no issues at all (google my name for lots of info on this trip). I put on 22,383 KM on the car and with my road trips throughout BC and Alberta I now have a total of 44,000 KM. Overall I have only three issues that I have run into where my windshield washer was losing fluid, a faulty sun roof seal and a burnt out tail light which all three issues were taken care of by my local Audi Dealer. Overall I would say I am super pleased with my car love it every time I drive it and don't regret my decision to buying the e-tron at all. I bought it over the model X as the model X was quite a bit more dollars here in Canada but also because I didn't like the Gull wing doors which prevents using a roof rack. Also one of my good friends owns a Model X and in the winter when opening his rear doors all the heat quickly leaves the vehicle and extra energy to reheat the interior takes up battery power not the mention the extra time it takes to get the car back to a comfortable temperature.
Thanks for a very well done review!

We don’t have the side camera mirrors stateside, but I’ve watched enough complaints over them that I wouldn’t like them too. I personally am VERY happy with my e-tron prestige. I’m wondering how the car feels too top heavy to you, the batteries line the bottom of the car making them very grounded and reduces Leaning while making turns. Our Model X leans more than my e-torn. The range is big down side of the car but I only drive within the city, then we use the model X for everything else. Currently on a road trip driving cross country in the model X as I type this, heading North into negative temperatures! One of my favorite features of my e-tron I’d say is the front massage seats!! Steve, good video. i am looking for an electric SUV and given that all new models from any manufacturer have a lead time of six months at least, i am considering a Q4 E-Tron 40. I think it has the best balance between range and power. there are barely-used ones in the market.

Even tried the Model Y but the crappy screen on the M3 and MY sucks & is basically unsafe. Looked at the 2019 eTron, but it just didn't justify the cost. Maybe the 2021 Sportsback is improved, or perhaps the Q8. Too bad VW f-upped the Diesel option for the U.S., as that TC'd 6-cyl engine in the Q7, Cayenne, and Touareg was awesome, powerful, and economical.

Good video! Some scratchy plastics? I'm sure I’ve heard similar for some of the trim on the Mercedes EQC. I guess this is where the likes of Nissan and Hyundai may find it easier to transition from their ICE offerings to EV’s because there’s already a lower expectation for feel and quality of materials. Mercedes, BMW, VAG already have a high bar so to save on weight/costs they’re not gonna be able to cut as many corners without being found out.

But with the glass top the upper part of the car stays hot, I got sun screen protectors front and rear, that solved the problem. Steve, great video. Been driving my E-Tron 50 Technik Quattro for two weeks. It’s the basic model, great car however, just to let you know for a £60k car, I want to add a few more disappointing non-features where cars half the price include in their spec. Audi been penny pinching with the spec on this model. No wireless charging; no adaptive cruse control; no usb points for rear passengers; no cup holders in rear arm rest; no tinted rear windows; no foot wave for opening boot; even the indicator turn signal is standard not the sliding led lights you get on modern cars. Hi Steve, Count yourself lucky that you have only experienced minor issues with your Etron. Public beware of buying one of these cars , I love Audis and have owned 15 including several A8s . As a fan of the brand I changed my A8 for an etron Launch edition thinking it I was doing the right thing in terms of environmental and sustainable purchasing. Initially I loved it , comfortable and everything I would expect from an Audi , good tech and a pleasure to drive. Sept 2021 there was a problem with charging so it had to be recovered and it has been in the garage ever since , the dealer is unable to fix Ito and Audi Uk have been very poor at supporting the dealer. Repair costs will be astronomical , they tell me that they have spent over 100 hours of tech time trying to fix it, I am not sure the rate that would be charged for an etron tech but they are the top rate so probably £200 an hour , they have replaced several components none of which fix the problem , if this car develops faults like this out of warranty it will very quickly be uneconomic to repair .Just imagine a labour bill of £20k plus parts. I have only done 5400 miles in the car which was £75 K list , now the garage said they cannot buy it back faulty so it is worthless , fixed I may get 50K back on it . So after 9 months of ownership and 5300 miles it is a financial disaster . Because the car was more than 6 months old when the fault developed Audi Uk are playing hardball and refusing to replace the car as a rejection. They are not sharing with me the technician’s report from the dealer , detailing time spent and parts , there is a code of silence when it comes to putting anything in writing . Ultimately this is becoming a very expensive problem to rectify and it feels like I will be left with a problem car , the dealer is full of platitudes but not a lot else and Audi UK are not doing the right thing by a really loyal customer. The dealers are saying of the record that some faults are developing that they are struggling to fix , insufficient tech expertise and poor Audi back up and massive costs are the elephant in the room.

I am just hoping that someone at Audi UK actually takes responsibility for the problems , the residuals on these cars are going to be terrible if they do not sort out issues for owners . No wonder that the general advice is only PCP these cars . People I talk to are enthusiastic about EVs for all the right reasons , but it feels like the worst purchase I have ever made. Over the last 12 months values of used cars have been really strong , mine looks like a complete car crash at the moment.

It's great that Audi are embracing EVs, and we should applaud them for this. However most of the issues here are not related to the EV nature of the vehicle, and things that Audi should get right as an experience car maker. I went EV in September 2019 with a BMW i3, overall I really like the car, but it too has some niggles that BMW should have done a better job on. Tesla are making all the legacy auto makers look lazy, the only problem for me is that all the Teslas look ugly to my eyes, purely subjective of course.

Some of the things you complain about are features IMHO and
some you can set in the MMI - sad you didn't read the manual before wining. (In ex setting the boot opening height.)
The stretching of the seat belts is a safety feature - surprising but really nothing annoying. Of course my personal point of view. Same with the stearing wheel, very comfy.
Maybe depends on how big hands the driver has.
Rear door windows not going down all the way, I agree, really bad solution by Audi.
Anyway, all in all, this is by far the best built and most quiet and comfortable car I have ever driven.
Handling is fantastic with correct settings for the adaptive air suspension.
If accelerating in 4 seconds 0-100 km/h is most important and 5,7 isn't fast enough for you, sure, by a Tesla.

I’ve been driving a Tesla the last 3 years and following all the EV news. Just buy a Tesla ! They are way ahead on everything, batteries, motors, inverters, software. Something else; when you buy just an EV , you are basically buying old technology, as in flip phone. All Tesla’s are are connected to the internet and have OTA updates, they are smart cars. Save yourself some headaches.

You don't say anything about the costs...what happens when the batteries worn out? In a diesel if the turbo goes out then you replace the turbo, in a reg engine a pipe bursts you replace the pipe which is not too much trouble but when the batteries for this E tron worn out then what? What would be the cost? How long these batteries run for before they go bust? 2 years? 3 years?

      Hi Ronnie,
It’s about £17 per 1000 miles ($21USD) home charging with the right tariff and varies from free to quite expensive for paid public charging.
We recently drove to Paris and back in our Tesla, about 1,000 miles for £3.50 ($5 USD).
Here’s the data for the home charging, I’m sure you’ll have similar where you are.
We save about 90% compared to our fuel price.
      th-cam.com/video/cmSsG-DNEVQ/w-d-xo.html
      All the best!

    • @Tom55data
      @Tom55data 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I also find it is about 10% of the cost of a equivalent petrol/diesel car. Ie in my case a T-M3 compared with a 60mpg diesel passat which was my last car. So if you are used a large petrol/diesel SUV you will cost you 10% in an e-tron. if you are used to an efficient petrol/diesel and go to an efficient EV saloon car (like Tesla) then you will see a 10% cost - I get 4.6 miles/kWh T-M3.

    • @Tom55data
      @Tom55data 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I would like to add another point, "how much does it cost to full charge your car" does not make sense to EV owners. You see, we plug in our cars over night so that we effectively have a full (90% for reasons) every morning. So you don't fill your car - you just top it up ; every morning my car has a 90% charge and 300 miles available. This is an entirely different concept to a ICE car where you try to avoid going to the petrol/gas station until say 50-100 miles left, then you fill it to full.
That is why our answers (EV Steve and mine) both say - it costs 10% since we don't ever fill our cars - that is not relevant except maybe 1% for journeys where you are going a long way. It is a very different way of thinking about "fuelling" your car. As an EV driver, my car always has 300 miles available to me every morning. It is like the comment, "how long does it take to charge your car", I will say 30 seconds at most - cos that is how long it take me to plug in my car - then unplug it next morning. Even on a long journey - it is still 30 seconds - since I will walk away, get a coffee, go for a pee, maybe some food - and magically my car is full of electricity; being a Tesla I don't have to use those stupid apps or RFI cards.
Did you know that standard ISO15118 has been around since 2014 - that would allow ALL electric cars to work like Tesla charging - plug and go... sigh !
